Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tdown] Runard, I don't recall seeing anyone explicitly die and the effects of the dam on the people isn't explored too much, it's mostly just a plot device for the end of the film. Also he wasn't aware of most of the nastier results of his actions so he can't be held responsible for them.

I thought we already discussed Runeard, and agreed that he does not count for the same reasons that game!Ghetsis does not- not enough onscreen evil actions, and essentially relies on Fridge Horror to pass the heinousness standard?

EDIT: Here it is. AustinDR was the one who originally brought him up. [tdown] Runeard and Wright (and Stanley, now that Tyk has posted).

Yeah Runeard is one of those guys who would count if the work had emphasized the effects of their villny. As is he's just an asshole who created a large dam.

I mean one of the main reasons that me and lighty passed on this demon Lord dude from this ya horrorbook is that very vague on what he would do. It was supposed to be bad but them not delving into plans with actual bodycounts leaves bad guy as standard.

  • Planet of Twilight: Dzym, an enigmatic member of Seti Ashgad's Rationalist Party on Nam Chorios, is an evolved and cannibalistic Droch seeking to feed on the entire galaxy. Prepared as nothing more than a genetically-modified appetizer for Beldorion the Hutt before achieving intelligence and a humanoid appearance, Dzym killed his creator and began leeching off Beldorion's strenght, allowing the exiled Seti Ashgad to take over the position for himself. As Ashgad's mysterious secretary, Dzym used him as an "enslaved front man" for his nefarious agenda, unleashing the Death Seed plague throughout the Meridian Sector of the galaxy and coordinating the deadly disease as a bioweapon, killing a majority of the population in Cybloc XII and a number of New Republic personnel, all while supposedly assisting Ashgad in his own ambitious schemes. Stocking the Reliant with containers of Droch to be spread across the many regions in the galaxy, Dzym's ultimate plan was to infect planet after planet and consume everything until there is no space civilization left, solely so he could keep himself satisfied.

Right. So I'm not fully finished with American Horror Story: Freak Show, but I'm on the ninth episode. That being said, I've seen enough to say we can go ahead and cut Stanley. The guy is indirectly responsible for getting a couple people killed. That is small potatoes in a series like American Horror Story, where some of the most sympathetic characters are shameless murderers (moment of silence for Twisty the Clown). Yes, he has very, very small resources, and he's an asshole, and a Hate Sink. Still doesn't change that what he does in the season doesn't have a huge impact (short of him manipulating Dell in killing Ma Petite, and sawing off Jimmy's hands).

Dandy also has very, very minimal resources, and he kills nearly two dozen people—one of them being his own mother, who is later turned into a marionette. So yeah. We're scratching Stanley.

And before anyone asks, no, we're not cutting anyone else. Satan is the Overarching Villain for the show; he's going nowhere. James Patrick March is responsible for hundreds of murders over the course of several years. Dr. Oliver Thredson is a Serial Killer who used his victims' body parts as furniture and repeatedly raped and impregnated Lana Winters. I've already given a thorough summary on Scatty-Catty-Daddy-Batty. And MadCr0w and I already talked about Margaret Booth and Richard Ramirez.

Dandy Mott is surprisingly very compelling, because he started off as an insanely over-the-top manchild nobody took seriously. And then evolved into a maniacal serial killer. There's several moments in the first half of the show where Dandy just wants to be happy and he feels like he's cursed, and can't understand what's wrong with him. But Dandy doesn't really try to fix himself either. He just declares that his purpose in life is to kill people. And after he kills his mother, all of his sympathetic qualities go away and he happily embraces being a murderer.

So Stanley goes. Everyone else stays.

I write stories and shiz. You can read them here.

Cut Stanley.

I have to correct the entry for Collins. He doesn't so much complain about his resources being depleted after losing two crewmembers, so much as dismissing them as useless.

No to Runeard and cut Wright and Stanley.

Elfein Lied Fan 90 was going to look at whether Gozer from the IDW Ghostbusters comics, but since he is no longer around, that would available for anyone who wants it.

I think Ghostbusters is one of the few big 80s franchises we have not explored as much as others like TMNT, Transformers, Masters of the Universe, GI Joe, etc.

We have got 9 Ghostbusters monsters and I think there may be more. There may be more in the 2 animated series, but the heinous standard for those cartoons is kinda insane. Seriously the apocalypse seemed to happen all the time on the Real Ghostbusters (some guy tried to bring about doomsday because his fiancee dumped him, there were 2 different doomsday cults that tried to summon demons called the Old Ones, the Horse Men of the Apocalypse were once freed by mistake and they tried to bring about the end of the world, the world almost ended because some city workers who were building a new subway found a living door that was not supposed to be opened till doomsday and pissed the door off so it opened prematurely) and Extreme Ghostbusters is a sequel to that series. The fact that Piper and Grundel are less powerful then the world-ending threats makes them stand out. Of course, there is also the next Ghostbusters movie and there could still be some keepers from the various comics.

Edit: There was a demon lord in Real Ghostbusters that wanted to steal magic sears from Greek Fates so he could cut the lives short of any mortal he wanted and this would allow evil to rule mankind, but I am not sure that is heinous enough for this show.

Pretty sure we already downvoted Runeard. Either way [tdown] to him. Also, I just finished Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. It was an amazing game, with fun combat, great characters, and a compelling story. It is easily one of my favorite Star Wars games, and one of the best games of 2019. As for any C Ms, like Lighty said, no one keeps. The second sister, aka Trilla, was a tragic villain, who was forced into becoming an inquisitor after being tortured, and just when she was able to redeem herself after Cree talks her out her hatred, she is sadly killed by Darth Vader. And speaking of Darth Vader, the final encounter with him is pretty intense and is one of the best scenes in the game, as it shows just how dangerous and powerful Darth Vader is, especially since you CANNOT beat him no matter what you do. Of course, this being Darth Vader, he doesn’t count either due to his massive supply of redeeming qualities, which all Star Wars fan would definitely know about.

" Dante... do you like fireworks? I love them. A brilliant, glimmering fragment of time. The flash begins as a perfectly-ordered chemical reaction... that melts into chaos. Human lives are the same, are they not? As is the universe itself... Blooming, scattering in the moment... And it's only a single moment, isn't it? A unique moment that you can never revisit. That's what makes life beautiful. Don't you think so? But I've spoken enough. It's showtime. I will show you the most beautiful fireworks you've ever seen. The scattering of the cerebral plasma... The splattering of blood... It's art. Perfect, beautiful art of a lonely moment in time. Don't blink. I want this burn into your retinas. Well... the one you have left."

The final episode of Real Ghostbusters had an Insectoid demon who was planning to use magic to enhance insects (making them giant-sized) and have them destroy humanity and engaged in human sacrifices, planning sacrifice Venkman in a ritual designed to give himself more power. Do you think he is worth proposing, given the steep heinous standard for this cartoon?

Also, not every villain in this series were world-ending menaces, some were sympathetic or were pretty generic. For a while Ghostbusters Arch-Enemy was a powerful ghost named the Ghost Masters, who just wanted to kill the Ghostbusters because he was mad they were capturing his underlings, Samhain is a typical take over the world villain and Boogie Man is unpleasant, but not heinous enough to count, so not every villain tries to destroy the world.

Also would anyone mind if I look at the Marvel run of Power Rangers comics as well as some other older ones? I know it probably won't have anyone, but they might be a fun read. I would also be interested in collabing with anyone. PM me if you are interested.
