Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

He loves Elizbetha. Plus it's not he really cares about killing humans its just he avoids unnecessary bloodshed since it would attract attention which could harm his kind.

Alright, been a bit busy, but since I haven't seen any posts about her, here's my write-up on Hel (which is possibly one of my first ones as well).

What Is the Work?

So Fire Emblem Heroes is a free-to-play mobile gacha tactical game where you get to pull units based on how many orbs you have (which you can pay for). Anyhow, the story mode has three books, which Book I was based on Veronica from the Embla Empire causing trouble, Book II was Surtr from the Muspel empire causing trouble (Surtr was vile enough to become Complete Monster on his own), and now we have Book III, featuring Hel, ruler of the dead, as the main antagonist. Book III focuses on the Order of Heroes taking on Hel and trying to find a way to kill her, as she is seemingly immortal.

Who Are They?

Hel is the Ruler of the realm of her own name, Hel. She seems to play as a role of a Grim Reaper, and curses people to their death, which she used to almost kill Alfonse (his father ended up taking the blow for him due to the fact the curse affected the bloodline).

What have they done?

One of the major crimes Hel commits is killing Eir's actual parents (who were blessed by the dragon of life), abducting her, subjecting her to Mind Rape by making her think that she was her actual daughter, and then killing her countless times just for her own selfish reasons, knowing her daughter would be obedient enough to comply. She even sent her on a suicide mission against the Order of Heroes during the first chapter of Book III.

She does place a death curse on Alfonse, which was something her father warned him about, but then at the last minute, Gustav realizes the curse and takes the blow instead. Afterwards, Gustav Came Back Wrong and was forced as one of her zombie generals against his will, forcing Alfonse and Sharena to kill him. Then when Hel tries to place the same curse on Alfonse again, he finds out a weakness of the curse and therefore, lifts the curse but issues an empty threat in the process.

Afterwards, Book III doesn't really highlight her after that point until the last chapter and focuses more on her main commanders Lif and Thrasir (who end up being Alternate Self Tragic Villain versions of Alfonse and Veronica respectively), and their point of view of her is just one where she promises them their realms back if they succeed. Nothing really comes out of it from there though.

Redeeming Qualities?

It seems she gets a small moment she's dying where Eir states that even though she's not her daughter, she still felt like that she felt love like a mother - something that vastly contrasted Surtr's actual daughters back in Book II. However, Hel doesn't really react positively to it and just wonders why Eir would be acting like this, questioning why her death made her sad. She doesn't seem to have any guilt over her actions otherwise.

Heinousness?

Honestly, compared to the last villain of Book II, she doesn't stand out at all compared to Surtr. Her most heinous moment is could be Off Screen Villainy (let's compare it to the scenes where Surtr killed Fjorm's sister in front of you AND ordered Laevathan to essentially sacrifice her life which Laegjarn took place of instead, which we saw as well). Sure, she's played just as seriously as Surtr (even coming with a chilling theme of her own), and Book III seems to be Darker and Edgier than Book II, but for different reasons than just the antagonist.

Conclusion

In my opinion, I wouldn't really consider herself one, as Surtr is quite a high bar to follow. However, for anyone familiar with the game and villain, I'd love to see how you guys feel about her.

[tup] Hel. Wow, FINALLY. Fire Emblem has not had a female CM, or even a real female villain, since Queen Hilda. Assuming she is heinous enough to get up, that is- honestly, I am not entirely sure myself. Leaning yes, but would not be surprised if she does not make it.

Also, about Samurai Gun, at least the anime; it, and the SiN OVA, were so bad, they actually got onto So Bad, It's Horrible! That takes a LOT of effort.

Hmmm...leaning yes to Hel, and yes to Mir's, but need to think a bit on the former. For now...

What's the work?

Innsmouth is a short film by Izzy Lee, a ten minute horror short based on HP Lovecraft's Shadow over Innsmouth that can be found on Shudder (Which I am loving)...a simple story, too....Detective Olmstead is a talented cop who never misses a hunch. After the discovery of a corpse in strange condition leads her to investigate...and the discovery sends her to Innsmouth. To the clutches of Innsmouth's leader Alice Marsh.

Who is Alice Marsh?

A human-Deep One hybrid, Alice is the daughter of Obed Marsh, the founder of Innsmouth and, presumably, one of the Deep Ones...Alice promptly seduces Olmstead with ease after drugging her to remain in Innsmouth. Alice is first glimpse by a photo by the first corpse, with the eggsac...and apparently, Alice is murdering people to use the corpses as vesses for Deep Ones. Sshe leads the drugged Olmstead upstairs, gets in a bath with her...and then reveals her inhuman self before murdering Olmstead, ripping into her throat and killing her, leaving her corpse in the same way.

Not only this, but Alice? We get a glimpse that this is regular for her, luring people to Innsmouth to seduce, murder and use as needed...in fact, she keeps tons of souvenirs as she does with Olmstead later...we see she has a trophy case full of photos of her victims, the photos of men and women going back well into when photos were black and white.

The short ends with Alice completely triumphant and unpunished, and presumably waiting for her next victim.

Mitigating Qualities?

For ten minutes? We see two victims with a pattern established for dozens if not hundreds. Alice, played by the talented Tristan Risk, is vicious and cruel, centuries old and preying on the innocent the entire time. Not a spot of goodness to her and she's just a vicious predator.

Conclusion?

And a win
