During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk
to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "
to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

After looking at the game's trope page and Wikipedia article, I'll switch to a no on Posiedon. I upvoted him because I was under the impression that he was The Heavy to Zeus from the EP, but from doing a bit of research, he definitely doesn't stand out enough since all of the other gods participate in Zeus' plan as well.

I was originally leaning yes to Mido, but I'd like more info on that bit about the heinous standard of God Eater, since I'm not too familiar with that series.
"I squirm, I struggle, ergo I am. Faced with death, I am finally, truly alive."Alright no to Posiden. I too thought he was The Heavy.
Ah it's fine with Mido.
If the only connections are bread crumbs then I don't think we have too much of an issue. It's another thing if the series outright influence each other.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."I've got kind of a fun one...
What's the work?
DonPachi is a rather famed and long running bullet hell shooter game, set on an earth besieged by a number of genocidal threats, from androids and invaders. The DonPachi squad are the heroes who protect the world, with the heroic 'pilot' fighting alien/robotic invaders under command of the heroic Schwarlitz Longhena...wwho has dark secrets....
Who is Schwarlitz Longhena?
Longhena is actually the Big Bad of the series. A misanthropic psycho who believes humans are irreparably flawed, Longhena has schemed to destroy them while acting as a heroic military officer...in fact, Longhen is responsible for the whole mess to begin with, having manipulated the robotic Elemental Doll race into attacking the world, which resulted in them being defeated with countless dead and the Don Pachi force instituted as a way to protect the world...in truth? Longhena made it his personal attack squad, testing the elite pilots by having them kill their comrades to induct them, while planning to unleash his private forces on earth. In DoDonPachi, we see Longhena take center stage as the villain, with future titles revealing how deep his manipulations go for the series...there's a lot of time travel, but that's the gist.
When the heroic pilot, in the first 'loop' (or route) is fighting a squad of invaders? It turns out that Longhena has neglected some details. They're the good guys, launching a fleet to stop him and he's having you stop them as he builds up his forces, seeking to revive the greatest destructive mech, Hibachi, which he will use to exterminate humanity. The speech he uses to reveal this is one for the ages.
Unleashing his "fierce fier" on you, you are forced to battle through Longhena's true forces to reach him as he tries to wipe out humanity, ending as he revives Hibachi to take you on...Longhena is killed at the end, aftr a long time of manipulation, torment and trying to omnicide the shit out of humanity....with an ending going basically "well, at least overpopulation has been solved" which is one way of looking at it.
Heinousness? Over issues?
Everything bad in the series is down on Longhena. Everything. He's well over the baseline, and while his characterization isn't rich, we see him, see what he does and he gets enough dialogue...and that speech demonstrates well enough character, along with his final speech...he gets plenty to showcase himself as a misanthropic nutjob. HE believes humans are flawed and must be destroyed, but without any benevolent intentions, given he's also a lunatic sadist with a god complex.
....does a bad translation and the hilarity that results count as mitigating? Because wow.
Conclusion?
Oh, yes indeed. I'm especially fond of his "Psych!!!" at the end.
Eh sure to Longhener. Thanks for that one.
Speaking of which, think I'm going to propose another anime example based on a very old Visual Novel tomorrow. Then I'll do my writeups. Anyone a-ok with that one?

"Making screw-ups and mistakes was I ever really good at. Because everything I touch went to hell."Back to horror now...
What's the work?
Trespassers is a recent horror film involving four friends renting out a nice home in the Mojave Desert for a weekend of fun, only to get involved in a siege from three masked strangers after a mysterious visitor shows up...our heroine Sarah is dealing with a recent miscarriage while her friend Estelle is there with her abusive boyfriend Victor...things turn bad and the cops show up, led by Sergeant Daniels, who has some dark secrets...
Who is Daniels?
The dirtiest of dirty cops. Daniels is the secret leader of a Mexican cartel group, which deals in serious nasty business and murders who gets in the way. After journalists snapped a photo of him overseeing an execution, Daniels has the two captured and executed when they cannot find the photo in the vacation home...when the four arrive, tensions ramp riiiight up, thanks to the Dysfunction Junction. Victor is an abusive asshole to Estelle, who slept with Sarah's husband Joseph when they were drunk, when Joseph and Sarah were undergoing issues over the miscarriage....and a mysterious woman arrives, working for Daniels in truth who claims she needs the phone...things get weird and eventually Victor shoves her, where her eye is impaled on a wine decanter. She dies, Victor snaps and pulls a gun on everyone...Estelle stabs him in self defense, when the cops arrive.
The friends try a cover story, but Daniels, being a corrupt creep, has his men on the area and refuses to believe nobody knows anything. He has Joseph stabbed and left for dead, has his partner Ramirez killed, and begins to interrogate Estelle and Sarah while being a total creep about it, mocking them all the while and mentally toying with them....before torturing them via smacking a bullet on their heads to hurt them with the sound of a strike on the end of it. Sarah finally realizes what they want and says (guessing) she knows where the photograph is in the darkroom....Daniels? Says they don't need Estelle anymore and has her shot in the head before intending to kill Sarah when he has the photo. Sarah, however, throws photo fluid into Daniels' eyes, blinding him. Joseph, still alive, kills one intruder as Daniels shoots another blindly. Sarah beats Daniels to death with a camera tripod and a dying Joseph manages to shoot the final one, allowing Sarah to escape.
Mitigating Qualities?
Heinousness? A decent body count, being responsible for about 5 or so onscreen, with more established by the photo. Plus some torture, and the sheer repellent nature of the man, I think he makes it here. For mitigating Qualities? Nothing. He's Faux Affably Evil at best and he doesn't seem to care for his mooks at all. He refers to the dead intruder as "my friend in the bathtub" when he shouts at Estelle and Sarah, but he only seems angry they tried to lie to him and they're holding out on incriminating evidence rather than any care for her as he never seems angry anyone is dead
Conclusion?
not the baddest of the bunch, but for this kinda movie? Keep.
for Schwarlitz Longhena.
...I'm leaning towards
for Sergeant Daniels honestly. How much do the photo(s) explicitly show? I've seen the film before and I'm struggling to remember that part. He seemed bland to me.
Then again this is me saying this.
I write stories and shiz. You can read them here.

I mean short and sweet are fine to me. I'm not one to judge just by the length of a quote. Honestly, I think it's best we just judge the quote base on it's content rather then length. And for setting a standard, that's kinda difficult since some quotes hit harder to others and not all of us will have the same idea on what qualifies or not. I think it's best we just leave it on a vote as usual, and if there's a problematic quote just bring it up and explain.
