While I'm here: great work on the rewrite Scraggle. Forgot to write that before.

Alright, this one is going to be a bit of a long-shot IMO, but I'm taking a stab at it just to be sure.

What is the work?

Paths of Glory, directed by Stanley Kubrick, is a movie set in the middle of the Western Front of World War One concerning a failed attack on a heavily defended German position known as "The Anthill" and the extensive fallout from it, including the subsequent trials of several men wrongfully accused of cowardice in battle.

Who is our candidate and what has he done?

The candidate in this film is General Paul Mireau, an overly ambitious French military officer concerned with his own advancement and nothing else.

In the beginning of the film Mireau's superior, General Broulard, calls him in for a meeting concerning an upcoming offensive centered around the aforementioned German position of the Anthill. Miraeu initially balks at the idea of attacking such a heavily defended position but quickly acquiesces when Broulard offers up rewards of medals and a promotion if the Anthill is captured.

Prior to the attack Mireau personally goes out to inspect the trenches, trying to instill Patriotic Fervor in his troops. Upon seeing a soldier suffering from the effects of PTSD, Mireau beats him and calls him a coward. Miraeu bullies Colonel Dax into planning the details of the assault and threatens to fire him if he doesn't go along with it.

The attack quickly bogs down and thousands of soldiers die before even making it halfway there (it's later pointed out that the extensive artillery barrage Miraeu ordered contributed to the failure). When Mireau notices that an entire regiment of troops won't leave their trenches, Mireau angrily orders an artillery barrage on his own troops, and when this order is refused by the artillery commander he orders the commander's arrest for insubordination.

Later on Mireau is so incensed by the humiliation that he tries to get Broulard to arrest a hundred troops from the regiment and have all of them executed. Broulard has to put significant pressure on him to reduce the number to only three, whereupon Colonel Dax promises to act as their defense attorney, causing Miraeu to promise Dax that he will ruin his career. Three men are subsequently arrested at random in each company, and despite Dax's best efforts, the three are found guilty in a sham trial and Shot at Dawn. Miraeu gloats and jokes about the executions, quipping that the men died "wonderfully".

Dax eventually gets Miraeu dismissed after bringing the order to shell their own trenches to light, but it's implied he will face few other consequences.

Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Hell no. Mireau's concern for his troops' lives are a blatant veneer, a total smokescreen that he abandons the minute he gets offered a promotion. The way he mentions his "concern" for his troops even comes across as manipulative, like he's trying to extract as much of a reward from Broulard as he can. Any other standard he has is similarly a lie or an excuse to be a bastard. He claims to hate generals that direct orders from behind the lines, but during his attack on the Anthill he sends his orders from a concrete bunker miles away from the fighting. He grandstands about the country's honor and frequently evokes nationalism but is motivated purely at the prospect of personal gain.

Heinous Standard?

Here's where things get murky. While Miraeu aggressively orders the attack on the Anthill and it is indeed a pointless waste of lives, Broulard is the one who orders it in the first place and even admits if Miraeu refused to do it, the order would've gone to someone else. Broulard is also the one who allows the farce of a trial to happen in the first place and passes on trying to prosecute Mireau for his crimes. I get some Inherent in the System vibes from this, since Broulard is a member of the General Staff, a very high ranking position in the army.

But I feel that Miraeu just barely manages to stand out thanks to his single-minded Glory Hound tendencies getting so out of control that he's willing to shell his own troops, threatens to fire and tarnish Colonel Dax for being willing to stand up to him, and tries to get as many as a hundred people executed for refusing a blatant Suicide Attack. All of these are independent of Broulard's orders or the General Staff's attitudes towards the war. I think it is a difficult call, but one I'm willing to make a gamble on.

Final Verdict?

[tup]

Also, I apologize if the film's been talked about before, but I could find no such discussion using the search feature.

I'm definitely certain he's been brought up before. But I'll give a [tup] General Paul Mireau.

World War One generals are infamously remembered for We Have Reserves mentality (with varying accuracy) but ordering the artillery to fire on your own men kind of pushes him over the line in my opinion.

And happy birthday Georgie.

@ACW The O'Herlihys father and son have played CMs; Dan O'Herlihy played Conal Cochran, while his son Gavan was Manny Fraker, and both films were released in the same year no less.

On the Sandbox of CM actors and tropers, you've done a much better job than me. smile

In the actors section, is it possible to add a section for families with multiple people who play CMs, like Eric and Emma Roberts, as well as Henry and Peter Fonda?

Abstain on the General but I'll lean cautious yes for now.

Anyways, HBD Georgie! As a birthday present, I think I'll have another proposal and its from music again btw. Now, remember Iced Earth? It seems that they also have another candidate in their belt and its actually from one of their album, "The Glorious Burden". Aaaanyways... The song itself is called "Attila" and it tells us the story about the infamous tyrant from Central Asia better known as Attila the Hun.

Who is He/What Has He Done

Anyways, for those who don't know who Attila the Hun is, he's basically the infamous tyrant from Hun empire and one of the most feared enemies of Eastern and Western Roman empires. In this song, he was depicted as a maniac who wants to slake his megalomaniac desires. I'll let the lyrics of the song speaks for itself:

"He's ruled them for twenty years
And ravaged as their king
Conquest burns in his eyes
And ice shoots through his veins
Their leader's new ambitions lie
Further to the West
The Empire that he seeks
The Father to the Rest
Attila wants to take his place
Like the impetuous son
To make the entire world bow
To the kingdom of the Huns

Alliance has been made
With many other clans
Frank and Vandal forces
Held within his hand
And by Attila's hand it's said
His brother met with death
To make his rule his legacy
He did his awful best
Ethele and Etzell
By many names he's known
But "Scourge of God" is the one
That rings the darkest tone

[CHORUS] Hell awaits behind Gaul's gates
The Roman's stand only to fall
They will die by his sword
The barbarian lord
Attila hear's victory call

[BRIDGE]

[Huns] Path of Fire and Plunder
Cities burn and crumble
Atila's fate beckons
He will come to conquer

[Romans] Archers stand at ready
Centurions all together
Keep to your lines
And the Mongol's sure to falter

[Huns]

We will surely break them
We will overtake them
Fight till our deaths
On the Christians devastation

[Romans]

They won't overthrow us
God will stand before us
Show us the path to the Huns destruction

Sing to the sky, the battle cry
To propagate their fears
As terror is the weapon drawn
When battle has drawn near
And so the conflict is at hand
The gauntlet has been thrown
Contempt for the Christian reign
The poison seed now sewn
And if by chance all is lost
Cut down by Roman steel
We'll suffer not as others have
Broken mind nor broken will

[REPEAT CHORUS]

So to whit: Atilla is a barbaric leader of Hun Empire who has a megalomaniacal desires, tries to attack the Western Roman Empire for his megalomaniacal rule and has a seething hatred of Christians and has his troop plunder and burn several cities in his conquest so yeah...

Freudian Excuse/Mitigating Factors

Nothing. He's just a barbaric leader of the huns with megalomaniacal desires and has a hatred with Romes and Christians. Nothing good from him at all!

Heinous Standard

Much like "Dark Saga" songs and "Damien", this song from Iced Earth is rather self contained and Attila doesn't need to compete with other C Ms. That being said, I think he just make it with his skin of his teeth. His attempt at razing cities along with his troops just to slake his megalomaniacal desires just pushes him.

Final Verdict

What says we? this one is a present for you Georgie!

Thanks, guys!

And now, because it's my birthday, I'm having fun. Meaning, I'm going to invert things and give you guys a gift : another candidate.

What's the work?

Les traces du passé is a French-written horror Web Original Fiction one-shot written by Lawliette.

In this story, the two main protagonists, Ariana and Tiana Weiss went on vacation to try and move on from their parents' tragic deaths a few years before. However, things went badly as ghosts choose to "play" with them, and by "playing", we're talking about psychological torture and trying to drive them to suicide.

However... They aren't our candidates. Our candidate is a nasty One-Scene Wonder Posthumous Character who is mentioned in one scene, but whose personality and acts makes her horrific enough to be worth a look for me.

Who is Sister Jeanne Belanger? What has she done?

Back in 1963, Madame Jeanne Belanger was a nun in charge of an orphanage she founded with the Church's support. However, behind her faithful, kindly facade? She was a sick, twisted Knight Templar who hurt the children in horrific ways. Wanna know how? Tortured literally all day, whipped into unconsciousness, starved and dehydrated.

But wait, there's more!

Belanger, under the guise of "correcting them", she would forcibly bring the children to priests just as depraved as her, who would promptly rape and enslave them.

When Sophie, one of the orphans, organized other children to try and make their escape, they were stopped at last second by Belanger... Who promptly locked them in a cave and watched as they starved to death. She then kept on happily adopting and torturing children until her mysterious demise. Luc De la Courbillère, a priest who lived at the same time and tried to expose her crimes without success (due to pressure from the Papacy), suggests that the children's ghosts enacted their own vengeance.

Heinousness?

For someone who is focused on for only one scene, she could give Kenta Ayatsuri a run for his money in the Would Hurt a Child department. Rape by Proxy, enslavement, starvation, dehydration and torture of countless kids she was supposed to take care of ? Largely above the rest.

True, the main antagonists of the fiction itself are the ghosts who constantly hunt and psychologically torture the Weiss sisters ... But they are the children's ghosts who were unable to move on after what Belanger did to them. While what they did is definitely Disproportionate and Misplaced Retribution, this is nowhere near what Belanger did to them. Hell, the Weiss sisters are more horrified by her crimes by what the ghosts did to them and releases De la Courbillère's diary, thus revealing her crimes.

Generic Doomsday Villain issues?

None. She has a clear personality as a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing who presents herself as a decent woman serving God, even through she's anything but.

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming qualities? Mitigating factors?

No Freudian Excuse. As for redeeming qualities, she founded the orphanage with genuinely good intentions. Sadly, said intentions are long gone by the time she kills Sophie. At the end, there's pretty much nothing left.

That said, there's only one potential mitigaing factor : her presence. While the Weiss sisters doesn't directly confront her, De la Courbillère gives us heavy description about her character in the one scene where she's relevant. Enough to avoid any Generic Doomsday Villain issues. Any Unreliable Narrator possibility is erased when the Weiss sisters release De la Courbillère's report on Belanger's crimes, as the children's ghosts can finally move on as the whole world now knows what Belanger did. Despite being relevant in one-scene, she's the reason the ghosts are so insane and she is the driving force behind their actions.

Verdict?

I'll leave it up to you guys.
