Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Nah. Bryce's season three characterization is a total Asspull. People don't change that quick, especially when they get hard ons about raping others. I mean, a person who can commit such a person who can commit such a personal crime as rape not just once, but MULTIPLE times over (and those aren't even the only crimes he committed) and soent years doing it remorselessly and SUDDENLY feel remorse. Yeah...that is really inconsistent.

As for my to do list, as long as I am notified that anyone wants to take a work off my hands, I'm fine. I mean I'm trying to read the Night Huntress series so I can get through my candidates already, but if I take too long, I may be willing to let someone else do it if they ask nicely.

Writeup time. Sorry if these writeups is not as good especially the music ones. Let me know what are your thoughts on it. Feedback is appreciated as always:

  • Buffalo Boys (2018): Drost, the right hand man of Van Trach, is introduced at first by transporting several slaves of Van Trach. However, he displays his true cruelty when trying to torture unregistered citizens—including women and children—by branding them and shoots one of the children when he escaped from his cruelty. Personally executing a village chief, Drost then captures the heroes to be tortured and interrogated by Van Trach. When the heroes escaped and retreated to a farmhouse, Drost then burns and shoots and burns the farmhouse under Van Trach's orders while letting his men kill and rape all of the innocent villagers while watching the burned farmhouse with an extreme apathy.
  • Iced Earth: In the album, "Dark Saga", based on Spawn, Spawn's two enemies are just monstrous as their original counterparts:
    • In the song "Dark Saga", Malebolgia, the self-proclaimed destroyer of light, is the demon who is responsible on creating Spawn. Making a deal with the deceased CIA soldier, Al Simmons, Malebolgia rigged the deal which resulted on Al's soul becoming corrupted and tormented and become the present Spawn. It was soon revealed that Malebolgia tries to manipulate Spawn for his own bidding in order to destroy mankind and the heavens.
    • In the song, "Vengeance is Mine", Billy Kincaid is a seemingly friendly man who is revealed to be worse. Defined as malignance personified by the song, Kincaid is revealed to be the Serial Killer and molester of innocent children who lives countless of bodies in his belt before being brutally murdered by Spawn himself.
  • SCP-106 Fanmade Song (By Glenn Leroi): In this titular song, SCP-106, is just as monstrous as his original counterpart. Trapping the narrator in his own pocket dimension and tormented him on daily basis which resulted on the narrator trying to warn the protagonist regarding the dangers of SCP-106, it was soon revealed that he also torments the protagonist in his own dimension and brutally murdered a "D-Class" person. It was also revealed to he has more victims in his wake other than narrator and the protagonist to be tormented in his pocket dimension.

Anyways, with Kazuya's permission via P Ms, writeup for Hanzo Hattori:

  • Big Order: Hanzo Hattori is initially presented as a polite person from U.N. Providential Government Security Council who is introduced by trying to stop The Group of Ten with a Yakuza and kidnaps the hero's sister, Sena Hoshimiya, to cause the Second Great Destruction with his previous boss, Gennai Hoshimiya. However, he revealed himself to be something worse. After Sena intends to cause the Second Great Destruction, Hattori then becomes the right hand man of Sena as he gleefully participating in starting the Second Great Destruction by performing a coup d'etat with Sena and stopping the heroes to defeat the Eldritch Abomination that Sena summoned known as God. It was revealed that he did all of this because the idea of causing pain at massive scale amuses him.

@Kazuya Prota Any feedback is appreciated and you can fix it in the drafts.

Because I somehow forgot Scraggle's music entries, here's a mini music batch:

  • Iced Earth:
    • The Dark Saga, based on Spawn:
      • "Dark Saga": Malebolgia, the self-proclaimed destroyer of light, is the demon who is responsible on creating Spawn. Making a deal with the deceased CIA soldier Al Simmons, Malebolgia rigged the deal, resulting in Al's soul becoming corrupted and tormented, becoming the present Spawn. It was soon revealed that Malebolgia tries to manipulate Spawn for his own bidding in order to destroy mankind and the heavens.
      • "Vengeance is Mine": Billy Kincaid is a seemingly friendly man who is revealed to be far worse. Defined as "malignance personified", Kincaid is revealed to be the Serial Killer and molester of innocent children who has countless victims under his belt before being brutally murdered by Spawn himself.
    • "Damien": Damien himself, from the song based on The Omen, is as wicked as his film counterpart. Having always known of his dark roots, Damien, "when the boy becomes a man", paves the way for the apocalypse and for his father's minions to pave the way to famine, destruction, and corruption, to show mankind what Hell really means until humanity exists no more. Damien showcases every inch of his evil through the song's near-ten minute length, even vowing to make Jesus suffer as none have ever suffered before.
  • Malevolent Creation's "Jack the Ripper": The titular killer showcases all his lurid atrocities and more, ripping apart prostitutes in the shadow of Whitechapel and performing "living autopsies" upon them. An "unconvicted maniac", Jack is indicated to see Whitechapel's prostitutes themselves "tempting" their eventual grisly fate in his demented mind.
  • The Misfits' "Jack the Ripper": The narrator of the song, indicated to be the titular serial killer relishing blood in his hands slipping through his fingers "like lives I take", viciously taunts and mocks his victims all throughout the song, hounding with the repeated chorus of "where you gonna go / whatcha gonna do?" The song ends as the narrator concludes with his slaughter, gleefully summing up how he hasn't any remorse, thanking the victim for "everything they did" to fulfill his desire.

Two weeks have elapsed, sooo...

What's the work?

Harlots is a drama on Hulu, set in the 18th century, based around a pair of competing brothels, and centered on the women therein, with an emphasis on showing the humanity and struggles of the sex workers there....the main house is run by Margaret "Maggie" Wells, (Brothel owner) while also focusing on her two daughters: Charlotte, now a High-Class Call Girl who serves as mistress to a nobleman, and Lucy, who's still in training....Maggie's enemy is the high-class Lydia Quigley, an older woman who runs a far more reputable establishment, but keeps the girls as slaves in all but name, Maggie being an escapee there with her best friend Nancy....in season 2, one of the girls, Kitty, is found murdered, and things begin getting quite dangerous, as the girls ponder a serial killer being about...turns out there's something much darker, above even a killer. I give you the head of the Spartans, Harcourt Fitzwilliams.

Who is Harcourt?

The Marquise of Blayne, Harcourt is an elegant nobleman with a nasty little hobby: obsessed with the Spartan culture, he's formed other noblemen into a group called the Spartans, to target 'helots,' as they call them. In truth, it's a rape and murder sex cult that especially focuses on virgin women. Using Lydia as a frequent go-between to abduct women, either from the brothels or elsewhere, Harcourt frequently murders women who will 'not be missed' or murders he can get away with. One of the Spartans, Fallon, is the murderer of Kitty, and eventually becomes Lucy's 'keeper,' using her against her family as a hostage.

The most important figure in Harcourt's life, however? His sister Isabella, who he has terrorized and tormented all her life. When she was fourteen, Harcourt raped her for the first time, and continued to do so after. As he gloats to her in present: "It's been too many moons since I broke a girl. None of them could hold a candle to you. You remain the most perfect act of my whole life."

Since then, Harcourt has also controlled Isabella's finances, stealing her money and gaslighting her, while relishing his power over her, dismissing her as mad if she ever tries to speak against him. The one thing he doesn't know? Isabella gave birth to a daughter, who she has managed to hide from Harcourt....when he meets Charlotte, who is now a free agent so to speak as her prick of a keeper suffered an untimely and much celebrated case of death...it becomes obvious soon enough that there is a profound attraction between Charlotte and Isabella, and just to hurt his sister, he buys Charlotte's services and yanks her off, doing so more when he sees how it distresses Isabella.

Due to circumstances elsewhere, Fallon is captured, which puts the Spartan operation at risk. Harcourt later realizes, quite angrily, that the now adult Sophia is his daughter and decides to use her to hurt her mother all the more....when Isabella blackmails him with Fallon's location, Harcourt manages to recover Fallon and forces him to kill himself. Taking a young mistress named Anne Pettifer, Harcourt proceeds to abuse her horribly for over a year until she gives him a son, before abandoning her back to Lydia's brothel, keeping his son and heir....despite seemingly bonding with Sophia, he pays a young servant to seduce her and elope with her, something that will scandalize the court and ruin Sophia's reputation....all while hurting poor Isabella more.

Getting sicker of the women interfering with him, he agrees to assist Lydia, who he also blackmails and mistreats...he'll deal with some of her problems if she resumes giving him his kills. Lydia agrees.

Harcourt, by this point, has become a friend of the Prince of Wales, giving him a mistress (and instructing him to mistreat her because of course)...said Prince however, is a better person than Harcourt realizes, and Isabella finds the courage to come forward and confess to him what her brother did to her, with the other women telling him about similar abuses. Harcourt is disgraced in front of the Prince, who coldly dismisses him from court, ruining his reputation.

Thanks to his blackmail, though, Lydia is on hand to provide him Lucy as a new drugged up victim, and Harcourt is prepared to rape and murder her....except? Lucy and Lydia trap him, with Lucy not actually drugged. Lydia stabs him in the back, and Lucy guts him as well, with a shocked and horrified Harcourt collapsing, managing a last curse on them before he succumbs to his wounds.

Heinousness?

Worst on show. It's not a happy life in brothels, to say the obvious....there are good people, bad people, and everyone in between. The Spartans, of course, are the worst, and Harcourt the founder, leader and the nastiest of all. Charlotte's first keeper, George is a rapist Hate Sink but is nowhere near heinous enough...Fallon is probably second worst, but despite being a murderer, he'd only skate since since he's the most visible Spartan besides Harcourt...but Harcourt? Everything he does is designed to hurt others, from little cruelties to serial rape and murder. The Spartan cult is as bad as you may expect, and Harcourt blows everyone else out of the water. Lydia is a sex slaver who turns over women to be raped and killed by the Spartans, but she loves her son, has moments of humanity and ultimately does feel guilt.

Mitigating Qualities?

Harcourt can make a convincing show of being a human being at times...when he finds out Sophia is his daughter, he's genuinely stunned and affected and seems very pleasant with his baby son...of course, this is quickly subverted. He only cares about having a male heir, and when Isabella gets the kid away from him, Harcourt only seems annoyed she's defying him. With Sophia, he contrives to have her seduced and her life possibly ruined just to spite her mother. Isabella at points admits to conflicting feelings as Harcourt is still her brother and she doesn't want him dead....until she realizes how this is just a conditioning and breaks free of Harcourt to expose him. But Harcourt, beyond raping her, utterly relishes making her life horribly miserable as he can. When he sees her romantic interest in Charlotte, he simply offers Charlotte a lot of money on the spot to buy her services, knowing it'll hurt Isabella.

No care for his followers or anyone else, either.

Conclusion?

A sadistic serial rapist and serial killer who runs a rape and murder sex cult who treats everyone around him as a toy, victim, or something to hurt or shape as he sees fit? A keeper.
