Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

A little Off-Topic.

I was checking the Black Mirror page and I am surprised that Matt of White Christmas has qualified.

I mean, he doesn't seem as horrible as Robert Daly (uss Callister) or Rolo Haynes (Black Museum).

After adding Thales and Solon to the Three Houses YMMV page, can they be also added to the Fire Emblem's CM page?

So I propose this quote before, but I'm bringing it up again since I didn't get much of a response. What do you guys think?

"I have waited eagerly for this day... Over the past 10 days... I have tasted your fear through the Mark... Thick and syrupy... As sweet as honey... Each savored morsel made me want to smash you to pieces... But... I waited... I am not as foolish to kill a goose that lays golden eggs... AaAaah... But I canNOT... take it anymore... Like crushing riPE fruit... And sipping itS juices... I WAnt to breAK you down... And savor your SWEet fear!"

Hey so I feel there should be a correction on Dracula's (1931) page. "trying to force [Mina] to kill her own father". I believe he actually tried to force her to kill her fiance, Jonathan Harker.

[up][up] I'm not sure about this quote. It certainly describes the character, but as for being a CM quote? Not sure. There's certainly other CM quotes about fear, but there's more about them than that.

For now, I'm going with a weak no.

Just dropping in to say my activity here is going to stop for a bit. My laptop's finally gone ass-up and I'm freaking out about getting a new job here to get the funds for that, so I'm going to need to divide my time sparingly.

I'll be back when I can.

Good luck Scraggle.

Yes to everyone I missed except for Zodiac.

Speaking of Skeletor, I think there is a lot of room for growth for the Masters of the Universe page, Horde Prime looks interesting in the She-Ra cartoon and the new He-Man movie and Netflix cartoons could yield more monstrous Skeletors.

Speaking of the new Netflix show, it's supposed to be a sequel to the 1983 Filmation cartoon, but should we judge its own? The 80s He-Man and She-Ra cartoons had almost no continuity and the villains were completely toothless (the Horde always used stun blasts and freeze rays in the 80s cartoon). I think Skeletor being willing to kill people in this new cartoon would be heinous by the Filmation series standards.

I know this mini-comic VVV brought up relates to The New Adventures of He-Man, which I think is more likely to have a CM then the Filmation series, but it is 65 episodes long.

See ya Scraggle!

I wonder if there's anymore opinions on the quote I propose?

EDIT: Also I got a problem with a candidate. Baldren Gassanarl from Valkyria Chronicles II. The guy is an asshole, but doesn't he love his sister? He also genuinely believed what he is doing is best for the country, saying other potential superpowers may eventually attack them and only through increasing their own power will prevent anyone from being potential threats. I don't really think he counts.

I don't think this entry from xXx: State of the Union was approved of.

  • Complete Monster: Secretary of Defense George Deckert, the Big Bad of the film. A former General Ripper, Deckert plans to assassinate the President of the United States and his successors so he can become President himself. To that end he abducts and fakes the death of Augustus Gibbons whom he plans to use as a patsy for his crime. His reasons for this being retaliation for the President closing down several military branches to focus on foreign aid.

Should we cut this since I haven't seen this on the Film S to Z page of this trope?

@Overlord: It really depends.
