Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

The second and third go together.

From Wiki:

The original project was produced by Filmation as a made-for-television feature film, partly as a reaction to the mammoth success of Star Wars in 1977. When NBC saw the finished work, it was decided to turn the work into what became the 1979 Saturday-morning animated TV-series Flash Gordon.

Although the film was developed before the 1979 animated series began...

My weekly writeups.

  • The Umbrella Academy: Dr. Terminal, debuting in Apocalypse Suite, is a cannibalistic scientist out to satiate his massive appetite. Having been diagnosed with Einstein Syndrome, Terminal made a device that would help prevent the disease from spreading. Terminal, wanting to keep the disease happy, became a cannibal who ate the doctors who diagnosed him, and even at a young Rumor’s arm, claiming that little girls taste better. Defeated by the Academy, Terminal programmed his robots to destroy a crowded carnival should the Academy reform, an act that ends up killing countless people, including children. Sent to Sir Reginald’s Hotel Oblivion, following a containment breach, Terminal eats a scientist and tries to devour the entire city, bragging about how his hunger is never-ending.
  • Terranigma:
    • Dark Gaia/The Devil is the ruler of the Darkside who plans to take complete control over the world. Creating the village of Crysta and Ark to be used as his pawns for world domination, Gaia, posing as the village’s Elder, manipulates Ark into opening Pandora’s box and crystalizing everybody in Crysta. Tricking Ark into awakening Dr. Beruga from his slumber in order to use his resources to start another apocalypse and rule over a new world, Gaia brainwashes Darkside Elle into killing a baby Ark, before later taunting Ark about how his entire life was a lie.
    • The aforementioned Dr. Beruga is a Novel Peace Prize winner who has discovered the secret to immortality, which involves turning people into zombies. With this knowledge in mind, Beruga sought to eliminate the weak and create a world populated by those he deemed worthy of immortality, with him as their ruler. Creating the Asmodeus virus that he used to wipe out 90% of humanity, Beruga sealed himself inside a chamber to be reawakened by Dark Gaia once the world has been restored. While in slumber, he establishes a cult that kidnaps people to be turned into zombies. Awakened by Ark, Beruga thanks him by killing him and unleashes the Asmodeus virus on Neotokio, killing everyone there.

Yes to everyone I missed, except for Piped Piper.

Here are the Which Way books characters:

  • Batman: The Doomsday Prophecy:
    • In this book, the Joker is as deadly as ever. In one story path, Joker sends Batman threatening messages through the Gotham Gazette newspaper, announcing his intentions to kill Batman and destroy Gotham City, by killing half of the population of the city. Joker attempts his murderous scheme by delivering enough poison to the citizens of Gotham City (either by dumping chemicals into the water supply for the city, adding poison the Gotham gas line or using planes to spread poison across Gotham City) in order to kill half of Gotham's population.
    • The Riddler is more sinister than usual in the book. Threatening to End Batman, Riddler kidnaps Commissioner Gordon and attempts to use a car bomb to kill him and Batman. Later Riddler lures Batman to Washington DC, where he kidnaps an actor dressed as Batman and threatens to drop him from a great height if Batman does not reveal his secret identity. But his worst act is luring Batman to a puppet show called The Riddle held in a children's theatre. Riddler sets the theatre on fire, willing to let the children in the audience die, just to get the better of Batman.

Alright...Here are meh belated writeups if you ask me :P

  • 88 Minutes: Jon Forster is a convicted Serial Killer who murdered and raped at least five women by tying them upside down and torturing them to death. Arrested after attempting to murder one of his victim's siblings by a forensic psychiatrist, Dr. Jack Gramm, Forster pleads for innocence and acted as if he was incriminated by the forensics when he was interviewed in the national television in his execution day until it was revealed that Forster ordered his attorneys to perform grisly murders to other innocent women and intends to incriminate Gramm for the murders solely to spite him and also escaping from his imminent execution.
  • She-Hulk Ceremony (1989): Carlton Beatrice is the CEO of Carlton Industries who tries to purchase an Apache's sacred land, Keewazi Reservation, for business purposes. Learning about the Apache people's religious ceremony, Beatrice masters the art of soul stealing. Learning that he lacks the beneficient energy produced by women, he killed an Apache woman who tried to stop him. Learning about the mystic basket that could expand his powers was in the possession of She-Hulk, Beatrice attempts to persuade her and when his assistant hurts She-Hulk with his spirits, Beatrice punishes him by ripping his soul apart while it was soon revealed that he need She-Hulk to give the basket to him to harness its power. To this end, he ripped her fiancee's soul and use it as a bargain to retrieve the basket. After retrieving the basket and Keewazi Reservation, Beatrice performs a ritual to consume all of the souls in Earth to gain more power.
  • Flash Gordon (1979):
    • In this 1979 cartoon version, Ming the Merciless is the despotic ruler of Planet Mongo who attempted to collide both Earth and Mongo in order to rule the Earth, uncaring if million casualties lost during the collision. When the Earthlings, Flash Gordon, Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov attempts to negotiate with Ming, Ming sends Flash into the mines—which is notorious for the horrific conditions of the slaves—as his slave when he rebels, forces Dale to become his next concubine and also forces Dr. Zarkov to become his personal scientist. Upon locating Flash at Voltan Sky City, Ming orders his soldier to wage war against Voltan Kingdom, seizing its territory for his iron-fisted rule. Even if Ming's plans colliding Earth and Mongo is stopped, Ming taunts the heroes that they will never came back to Earth and attempts to capture them who escaped from him by waging war against other kingdoms. After he managed to capture the heroes, Ming pits them against each other in the Tournament of Death and manages to kidnap Dale, forcing her to marry him and freezes Flash so that he could watch in horror. After he was defeated and the Prince of Arboria become the new ruler of Mongo, Ming attempts to destroy Arboria in several inventive ways in order to defeat Flash and his companions and reclaim his rightful throne as the ruler of Mongo.
    • In this 1982 TV Special, Ming is just as ruthless as ever as the despot ruler of Mongo. While keeping some of his crimes just like in the animated series, it was revealed that in this special, Ming works together with Adolf Hitler by giving his radioactive substance experiments. The slavery in the mines is also much more horrific compared to the animated version because any slaves who died despite their horrific conditions will be eaten by the Lizard Ladies who supervise the mines. Unlike the animated version, Ming razes the Voltan Sky City into the ground when trying to get Flash and his companions who escaped from Ming's clutches. In the end, it was revealed that Ming attempts to destroy the Earth using his "Divide and Conquer" strategy.

I'll be honest that I won't mind if Ming got a header just like Kalis Norman from Jinki Extend in different versions so that it makes it comes across as both of these versions of Ming counts. Until then thoughts?

  • Ming the Merciless, Flash Gordon's Arch-Enemy, is equally evil in both the original series and the TV movie, The Greatest Adventure of All (which was actually created first, but not aired until 1982):

[up] Sure. That works.

Also, small correction on Saw Boss: Saw Boss leads the Mind Monsters, who were created by Jayce's father, Audric, initially for a peaceful purpose before rebelling against him in order to conquer the galaxy. A bellicose commander, Saw Boss orders the invasion of many planets destroying several of their ecosystems; institutes mass enslavement; causes the starvation of worlds' worth of people; creates horrific plant creatures in order to enrage a warlord and steal his weapons after he and his armies are defeated; and manipulates the population of another into a civil war for his own gain. As resistance groups rise up against him, Saw Boss infects their water supply in order to weaken them. His thirst for power knowing no limits, Saw Boss even used slave labor, capturing innocent scientists to build a weapon to allow him to conquer other universes and, when stopped sabotaged a satellite to make it crash into a planet out of spite. In order to get the ultimate weapon Jayce possessed and get rid of him and his companions, the Lightning League. Saw Boss manipulates several people to do his bidding while betraying them once they're no further use to him. He even creates a black hole by crashing three planets; destabilizing another inhabited planet; and crystallizing another one, including its population, all just to get what he wants.

The reason is that because of Vantu's writeup that I accidentally mentioned the Lightning League without mentioning what are the Lightning League is. Basically its the other name of Jayce and his companions as they're often called that by other species when visiting planets they have to rescue from Saw Boss and his minions

I found this on Otello (An itallian play adaptation of well Othello)

  • Complete Monster: Iago is as evil and manipulative as he is in Shakespeare's play, and he even has an aria where he boasts of his cruelty. His aria, "Credo in un Dio crudel" literally translates to "I believe in a cruel God", and it's all about how he delights in being cruel and evil, and how he doesn't believe in being a good man. It's safe to say that Verdi has made him just as villainous, if not moreso, as Shakespeare did.

What is the Work

The work is Dayshift at Freddy's, a parody series of the indie horror game series Five Nights At Freddys. The series mainly focuses on the protagonist Jack Kennedy, that works in a pizzeria of Freddy Fazbender. Depending on the choices, the story and the endings will change (the most important and recurring choice is choosing to either help William/Dave/Purple Guy with killing kids or going against him). What makes this parody particular from many other FNAF parodies is the fact that, unlike the original game series, it's mostly funny and memey (but this doesn't mean it doesn't have some serious moments).

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

The candidate is Dr. Henry Miller. Henry serves as the Greater-Scope Villain of the whole series, starting the chain of murderers with his "partner" William. Henry kills exclusively for his experiments on souls and on the afterlife, putting souls in machines with the intent of having more control on them and torturing them to gain their obedience because he is convinced that with the help of a ghost that obeys him he can pass the barrier that divides our world from the afterlife and even shatter it. While William is completely devoted to Henry and pratically sees him as a father, Henry clearly doesn't care about him, doing nothing but manipulating him, convincing him that giving "immortality" to these souls is only good for them (while he is very aware that these souls are probably suffering) and at some point kills William sabotaging his springlocks suit. When Henry discovers that William repossessed his own corpse and is still loyal to him, he uses him for his experiments, sedating him once a month and removing his organs and parts of his brain to see if William would lose his memories (which doesn't happen because something way worse happens: William's personality starts changing, caring less about the ethic problems with Henry's work). When Henry gets tired of William, he abandons him starting to go on a killing spreed. His most notable crimes are:

  • having caused the "Freddy's blowtorch-urinal incident" (which made 17 people end up hospitalized in the aftermath);
  • having killed Jack's sister and brother;
  • having ignored Jack's help request while he was dying inside a springlocks suit, simply walking away and laughing and even wanting to make the police think that Jack, who was Henry and William's night guard at the times, was the killer.
Henry then gets killed by Blackjack (Jack's soul), who however doesn't allow him to go to the afterlife and traps him in the flipside (a dimension where damned souls go), which not only makes Henry more powerful but allows him to affect the real world, making the souls still damned and making him indirectly responsible for pretty much any other murderer that happened after his death. In the "Evil Ending" of the third game, he possesses Jack, making him insult and brutally kill William.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

While Henry had a rough life with for example his alcoholic father and a son who died at some point, this doesn't help to sympathize with him nor justifies all his crimes. As stated by him, Henry only wants to show the "Joy of Creation".

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

What makes Henry stand out from any other character in the series is that he doesn’t have even one funny moment. He is always maliciously serious, making him hardly seem a character from this series and making him seem even creepier than he already is.

Final Verdict?

I honestly think Henry fits very well in the Complete Monsters category but it's of course up to you all decide it.

falcontalons from Earth-2 Since: Apr, 2019

Tentative [tup] to Henry.

Should we cut the Shakespeare tree on Other Media and re-alphabetize the Theatre entries? Shakespeare's works don't take place in the same universe, unlike, say, Stephen King's.
