Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

There is one other Naruto canon baddie I'm now considering....he even fits the father's Day theme.

The one I have a close eye on now is Jigen, the new Big Bad in Boruto.

Yea to Bard, and now...here's a classic example:

What's the work?

The Black Pirate is a 1926 silent film starring famed adventure and swashbuckling hero Douglas Fairbanks...surprisingly, the film is shot entirely in technicolor. Now, wicked buccaneers prowl the seas, killing and looting as they will. When oen ship is attacked, two survivors manage to get clear: the Duke of Arnoldo and his son. The duke perishes, and his son vows to avenge him...infiltrating the ranks of the pirates to bring them down....the villain is not the captain, but his lieutenant.

Who is the Pirate Lieutenant?

A ruthless, lean and hungry fellow, who with his captain, is a Big Bad Duumvirate...at first. The two are known for taking ships, massacring people there and tying up the rest of the crew, before using gunpowder, igniting it and blowing up the rest of their victims while robbing them. When they attack the Arnoldo ship, they do the same thing, blowing up the crew and civilians they haven't already killed...oh, and when one unfortunate swallows a valuable ring, the lieutenant is shown returning with the ring. And a bloody knife.

Now, they intend on hiding their treasure...and to make sure they don't have to share? The Captain and Lieutenant plot to murder their entire crew, when the young Duke shows up, claiming to be a pirate who wants to join the crew. When initially shunned as not capable enough, he offers to prove himself in a fight. The Captain opts to duel him and is summarily killed in the fight, the Lieutenant fine with this as he gets to take over and has the Black Pirate become a crew member, demanding he waylay another ship. Using his wits, our hero does take the ship without firing a shot, and convinces the pirates to hold it for ransom, including the beautiful 'Princess' Isobel, who the Lieutenant takes a fancy to.

The Lieutenant ends up trying to betray the hero, intending on still blowing up the ransom ship to kill those aboard and to keep Isobel for himself, while exposing the Black Pirate as a hero and sending him over the plank....the hero is rescued b the sympathetic pirate Mactavish and the two head quickly to go get the navy on the case, resulting in an attack as the Lieutenant attempts to rape Isobel. The fight spills in and the Lieutenant and the Black Pirate face off, ending with the Black Pirate defeating him...and then using him as a human shield when the other pirates shoot at him, before the pirates are disposed of, and the young Duke's position is revealed anew, allowing him to return home and propose to Isobel.

Heinousness?

Mass murder, attempted rapist. And this is from 1926?

Mitigating Qualities?

Zip. He's worse than any other pirate, and he and the Captain are full partners. They seem friendly but when the captain is killed, the Lieutenant is just "Eh" and doesn't even blink. He has no loyalty to anyone, is responsible for multiple massacres and is just a complete honorless blackguard.

Conclusion?

And a classic keeper.

One other right now, this'll be a quick one.

What's the work?

Gore was an incomplete comic from some years ago by GG Studios...the premise is simple. It's Carnival in Venice, and the city is under siege by monsters. Creatures from twisted fairy tales, myth and legend are attacking and claiming victims, hunted by a mysterious man named Gabriel, assisted by Roxanne, whose sister was a victim of the Little Mermaid in the canals....the creatures begin to retalite against gabriel...and one of them is the worst: The Little Match Girl.

Who is the Little Match Girl?

A vicious pyromaniac and sadist, who, after Gabriel takes out Hansel and Gretel? In a word? this.

To punish him, she finds an orphanage and proceeds to burn every child therein alive, along with those managing it, much to the horror of everyone around. Gabriel and Roxanne arrive and the Match Girl begins attacking them, savagely pursuing them and burning alive those in her path. When they take refuge at a convent, she attacks and proceeds to fry a nun or two.

Gabriel, however, gets the better of her and ends her with a well-placed shot, blowing her up and finishing her off for good.

Heinousness?

Most of the others eat a few people, maybe carve a few up. She burns an orphanage.

Mitigating Qualities?

Nope.

Conclusion?

She burns an orphanage.

I was able to do this:

  • Dead Rising series: Even in the midst of a zombie outbreak, the following prove that Humans Are the Real Monsters:
    • Road to Fortune prequel comic, Dead Rising 2, Dead Rising 3: Marian Mallon is the Director of Phenotrans and the mastermind behind their conspiracy; in order to necessitate the creation of Zombrex, Mallon has zombie outbreaks start in cities all over the country in order to harvest "Queen" zombies, infecting and killing countless people. Her planned Los Vegas outbreak alone kills 10,000 people, and Mallon has a scientist who tried to leak the truth killed. Mallon also keeps Isabella Keyes as a constant captive, stealing Keyes's research and forcing her to work for Phenotrans. When Frank West and Chuck Greene uncover the conspiracy, they discover Mallon has been committing mass kidnappings for her experiments, and Mallon claims Phenotrans created a cure for the zombie virus which she hoards for her own infection, also stating releasing permanent cure wouldn't be good for business. By the time of the third game, Mallon agrees to seek the permanent cure when her condition starts to deteriorate, starting another outbreak, teaming up with Hemlock in his bid to takeover the country. Narrowing the immunity carrier down to Nick Ramos and his friend Denis, Mallon kills Diego in her experiments by causing his parasites to explode from gruesomely him.
    • Dead Rising 2: Tyrone "TK" King is the host of the controversial reality show "Terror is Reality", wherein contestants slaughter zombies, much to TK's profit and entertainment. Accepting payment from Phenotrans, TK helps them set a zombie outbreak on the city, framing Chuck Greene for his crime. Taking advantage of the chaos, TK robs every casino vault he can find. Eventually bitten by a zombie, TK begs Chuck to save him with Zombrex, immediately swearing to kill Chuck's daughter if he's saved. Taking Chuck's young daughter and friend hostage, TK forces Chuck to get him blackmail material on Phenotrans to gain leverage on them, spitefully trying to murder Chuck, along with his daughter and friend afterwards.
    • Dead Rising 3:
      • General John Hemlock, Secretary of Defense, oversees the martial law over the zombie outbreak in Los Peridos, and is working alongside Marian Mallon, acting President in the absence of Sonya Paddock. In reality, Hemlock had Paddock kidnapped and forcibly infected with the zombie parasite, so that he could take over. Hemlock plans to firebomb the city it in a week if there are no signs of organic life, and he uses his psychotic henchwoman Sgt. Hilde Schmittendorf to kill civilians. His plan is to extract King Zombies from the city and use them to start and control outbreaks all over the Eastern Seaboard to continue imposing martial law and leave him as the de-facto dictator. When Mallon disrespects him, he kills her by throwing her off a building.
      • Albert Contiello is a sadistic surgeon who represents the sin of Greed. During the outbreak, Albert takes to abducting survivors and begins performing surgery on them without anesthetic to harvest their organs for the black market. When he captures Nick Ramos, Albert injects him with a hallucinogen that makes him hallucinate everyone around as Albert, putting other innocent survivors at risk.

[tup] Little Match Girl; that'll make a good image too.

I want to comment again on the Monster Verse!Ghidorah writeup that as far as I'm concerned it doesn't mention his terraform goals, and it should.
