Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I'll stick with my yes then; if we were THAT stringent, we'd probably have to cut wide swaths of keepers, and lord knows I'm not gonna go through that.

[up] That's true; different continuities helps.

You have to love giant spiders. Well, this calls for a large rolled up newspaper to smash this one.

Here's my Zombie Priest writeup. Might be a bit long, but given how much crap he's done over the course of the series, I think it's kinda justified.

  • The Zombie Priest/The Nameless Man, real name possibly Rumpelstiltskin, is the Overarching Villain of the entire series, and the Goon’s Arch-Enemy. A wicked necromancer and former member of the Coven, the Priest was a demon who would trick poor couples in need as a way to take their babies and eat/sacrifice them. Escaping Hell after a millennium of torture, the Priest sought out the curse of the Nameless Town in order to acquire its power and make both human and demon alike obey him. He turned everyone in a small town into a zombie, turning its sheriff, Buzzard, into an immortal ghoul, later capturing and torturing him for two months via starvation. Tricking a poor farmer named Houstus Grave into becoming his gravedigger, he granted him and his sons leprosy that caused the death of his wife. Running out of zombies thanks to the Goon, he decides to use the corpse of a pregnant woman, dubbed the Mother Corpse to give birth to deadly zombie babies, all while making her believe herself to be an expecting mother. Kicked out of his castle by the Arab, the Priest becomes a street beggar who helps others for money, assisting corrupt businessmen in their murders and ruining the lives of plenty, placing the blame on them. He then kills and eats his most loyal Familiar.

Ygy is awful, but Eihort's creepy niche distinguishes him well, fear not.

Now, Eihort? He has one particularly horrific follower: enter Vanessa.

'Who is Vanessa?

Vanessa Volker is a beautiful woman and the realtor who manages the Cooper House, which resides over Eihort's labyrinth...A student of black magic who wished to locate Eihort, Vanessa murdered the previous realtor to take over the Cooper House and seek out Eihort. See, as the module says? "She's insane. But she has a plan." See, Eihort can be bargained with to some extent...and Vanessa learned of the 'Chosen of Eihort,' a being who takes the spawn into themselves, but staves off execution by feeding others to Eihort and his brood. This can grant them great power and knowledge and Vanessa wants it. She moved into the labyrinth and found Eihort, who infested her when she accepted the bargain. Vanessa is the main human villain of the module...see?

Vanessa is a serial killer, luring in men with her looks back to the cooper House where she dumps them into the Labyrinth, wipes their minds and leaves them to the horrific fate of being eaten from inside out by the Brood, extending her time as a Chosen, while also taking up a spell called Balk Brood, allowing her to kill the spawn inside her when she's had enough to escape the consequences completely. This...continues for a while, with a lot of hapless men being fed to Eihort's brood, until Vanssa gets desperate when a string of victims in a row refuse the bargain, prompting their execution. Vanessa? Lures in the Investigators to send them in at once to Eihort, wherethe game begins and they're all infested together.

This is where things kick off, the heroes investigating to see exactly what happened, recover their memory and inevitably deal with Vanessa, who intends to keep feeding innocents to Eihort to reap the rewards from the knowledge and power.

Heinousness?

For one single human cultist? This is bad. Eihort is one of the most horrific fates in the whole mythos and Vanessa just carelessly feeds innocents to him just so she can benefit, erasing any chance of them surviving it, while sending the Investigators in to be used as Eihort's breeding ground. Yes, she plasses.

Mitigating Qualities?

None. Vanessa, it's noted, is insane, but clever. And she doesn't want to kill the investigators, as that would kill the Brood within, which might piss Eihort off and "she's not that crazy." However if pushed, she will use the Balk Brood spell and flee. Yeah, there's nothing good to Vanessa here.

Conclusion?

A keeper. There are a pair of Eohort cultists in Cthulhu Invictus who may count, but for Cthulhu Now? Vanessa handily clears.

And a yes to Eihort and Vanessa.

Actually, I googled Eihort and found an image that strongly resembled Rom, the Vacuous Spider from Bloodborne, though aside from looking similar there doesn't seem to be a connection - Rom is docile until attacked and quite mindless. But given how Lovecraftian Bloodborne is, it certainly seems to be a Shout-Out at the very least.

She WILLINGLY became a Chosen? Yikes. Yes to the crazy bitch.

Should we add the Call of Cthulhu games to the page, or just leave it the tabletop baddies?

Leave it to the Tabletop.

Cthulhu Invictus has a pair of Eihort cultists who may keep. They industrialize giving people to him, practically.

Here's another possible fanfic candidate to cut, from the RWBY fanfic The Black Dragon:

  • Adam Taurus is a ruthless dragon who refuses to believe his violent methods are wrong. Introduced shooting Blake to abduct Ruby, Blake's nightmare reveals he staged a one-man attack on Mengerie when he felt the Faunus there were ungrateful to him. This attack resulted in Ghira's death. In present day, he strikes Ruby and gleefully slaughters a section of the city he and Ruby are in as an "invitation" to Blake. When Blake and Kali arrive, it is revealed that Adam tortured Ruby to avoid boredom while waiting for them to show up. He then attempted to slit her throat, but was tackled by Kali. This results in a huge fight between the three breaking out, with Adam attempting to kill Kali to spite Blake.

This story, like the Kirby fanfics I brought up, is a short, fairly barebones 1k, with a thin plot.

Also, here's a tally for Mr. Bear:

[tup](Keep): 8

[tdown](Cut): 10

Someone can probably file the cut request for Mr. Bear then. I may do a tally for Ellen later, or someone else can.

[down]Well, it's just that ACW wanted a tally, and a cut request was never submitted. Most people did vote to cut, though.

Ellen was pretty much a cut there. There was some arguments on the fact that time period being a contributing factor (such as with what Lighty mentioned here under baseline), but it looks like she was otherwise a cut as well.
