Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Sorry to hear about that Future.

So, For the Picture of Ultron on Marvel Animation, it's fine but I think the quote that goes with the picture could be Replaced with a quote from the film itself instead of one from Ultrons comic counterpart.

"But In time evil Returned, an Evil called, Ultron"

Things are really about to get Fun around here

@Kylotrope Thanks.

@Elfen If were talking the film version, maybe. I think he’s kind of outheinoussed by Cobra Commander and Zartan though.

This was added on Honkai Impact 3rd: Archbishop Otto Apocalypse is the Overseer of Schicksal, an organization dedicated to fighting the Honkai and protect humanity. The more we see him, however, it becomes clear that Otto does not have humanity's interests at heart whatsoever. We discover that he has been purposefully dragging on the Honkai War for years, causing untold deaths and destruction. But that's only the tip of the iceberg. The Everlasting Memory chronicles show that he is willing to stoop to kidnapping young children and experimenting on them, and even cloned one of the said children to become a vessel for a genocidal god. He is very callous of everyone around him and is perfectly fine with executing those he no longer considers of use. And to top it all of, he ultimately plans to sacrifice his granddaughter for his plans to come to fruition. All this death. All this destruction. All this betrayal. All of this just to bring a woman he was in love with back to life.

I don't recall this being approved by the thread.

Uhhh...that seems like a cute, too.

Also, one character I never formally proposed who now I shall? Vampire Circus was a 1972 film by Hammer Horror. A group of village leaders learn their Count, Mitterhaus is a vampire, seducing the schoolteacher's wife to bring him little girls to feed on...when destroyed, Mitterhaus vows to return and bring about a horrific revenge...his lover escapes to give birth to his vampiric twin children, while also locating Mitterhaus's cousin, The Heavy Emil.

Who is Emil?

The head of the Circus of Night and Mitterhaus's wicked cousin who headlines the schemes in the film, who is also totally fabulous and hysterically flamboyant. Emile decides the best way to go about this is to put together a circus in an elaborate scheme to wipe out the villagers' children so their blood can feed Mitterhaus...arriving in their town of Steitl under the guise of traveling gypsies, Emil commences the murder, transforming into a black panther to apart multiple innocent people for the sacrifice, while seducing the daughter of one village elder, attempting to murder her through it....while also having brought a plague to Steitl to kill off a number of the villagers.

Through the Circus, Emil begins wracking up a higher body count, luring in more of the town's children to die, including two young boys who are drained dry by the Count's twin children, Heinrich and Helga...Emil proceeds to menace the town Burgomeister, already in dire straits from an earlier illusions, before inducing a heart attack, and then killing and draining his daughter Rosa, who he had 'romanced' before. Emil then massacres a group of students...and we soon learn that the Circus of Night? Emil has a habit of this stuff, touring areas and slaughtering what he encounters. People die wherever the Circus goes....Emil proceeds to murder the rest of the Circus's non-vampire performers to feed him and his minions, and then has the schoolteacher's daughter, Dora Mueller abducted with her guardian, who he kills and drains to feed the Count. His partner, Anna, the Count's old lover, gets cold feet when Emil tries to eat her daughter...so Emil kills her, when Dora's love interest arrives. Proving ineffective? Her father arrives and fights Emil, who kills him, but not before the old schoolteacher manages to stake the vampire through the heart, and Emil dies as he lived: overacting painfully.

Heinousness?

Oh, not a problem. Now, Mitterhaus is the Big Bad responsible for everything and is a vicious serial killer of kids, but Emil is a killer in his own right, the master of the Circus of Night and The Heavy doing all the lifting...he's also a gleeful, murderous bastard.

Mitigating Qualities?

Now, this is the only rub...Emil goes to a lot of trouble to bring his dead cousin back, but their relationship is never explored. Emil just acts like a fanatical servant in wanting him back and was already doing the whole Circus deal. No redeeming aspects are ever ascribed to his feelings for Mitterhaus and Mitterhausg gives no fucks he's dead at all. Besides that, nothing much. Emil is just a sadistic, remorseless murderer , and when Anna shows even a second of hesitation, he kills her on the spot.

Conclusion?

Yes indeed here, I'd say.

Anyways, my next Lovecraft candidate, one I'm shocked I overlooked for so long...

What's the setting?

From Beyond from 1986 is an adaptation of the Lovecraft story of the same name and a classic entry into my beloved Body Horror genre. We follow Dr. Crawford Tillinghast (no obvious relation to Hester, unless he's of Curwen's lineage...) and his associate Dr. Edward Pretorius, who have invented a machine they call the Resonator. What is does is stimulate the pineal gland with a certain frequency that allows them to peer into a dimension beyond Earth, into a whole new world of strange creatures and sensations... unfortunately, they can be seen too, and Pretorius has his head munched by an eldritch horror while the gibbering Crawford is committed. Enter the most cheerful mad scientist ever put in a horror film, Dr. Catherine MacMichaels as she takes Crawford out of the institute to resurrect the experiment (because something-something schizophrenia, who in the 80s were just dudes with scary pineal glands). What follows... well, Dr. Pretorius isn't quite so dead after all.

Who is Dr. Pretorius? What has he done?

A kinky sense freak of a doctor (the anti-BDSM slant in this movie is hilarious—"you never gave pleasure, only pain!") who ended up becoming a part of whatever strange entity assimilated him, Pretorius gleefully embraces the new world of sensual pleasures he's been uplifted to and tries to tempt and then devour Crawford, Catherine and their cop friend Bubba when the Resonator is on, revealing his freaky new powers that allow him to turn into whatever grotesque shape he wants. Pretorius wants in, now on a massive ego trip, and starts to slowly drive everyone in the house insane, changing them and their personalities as they're helplessly aware. Pretorius particularly focuses on Catherine, making her crazy (well, crazier than before) and feeding into her sexual appetites while tempting her to continue the experiment against Crawford and Bubba's interests.

Pretorius eventually gets the Resonator up and running again and goes all-out... Pretorius has Bubba horrifyingly eaten alive, stripped to the bone by a series of alien flies. Pretorius immediately attempts to rape Catherine, molesting her and giving her a horrific "kiss" by letting his head explode to reveal a second mouth that starts... erm, sucking her head. Crawford attempts to stop him and Pretorius uses his powers to forcibly augment his pineal gland, which mutates and bursts out of Crawford's skull. Pretorius is driven off after, but Crawford is driven insane and reduced to a brain-eating monster (who still has occasional flashes of lucidity, to his horror) who starts devouring the brains of numerous innocents at the nearby hospital. Eventually, Pretorius manages to turn the Resonator back on himself when Catherine sets an explosive to destroy it, continuing to drill into Crawford and Catherine's minds, now intent on devouring not only them but the entire human race. A creepily wicked final battle ensues where Pretorius devours Crawford's head, seemingly killing him, only for Crawford to grow out of his mouth and meld with him, ripping apart Crawford from the inside-out and reducing the two to a melded, double-headed writhing thing before the explosive goes out and destroys both Pretorius and Crawford for good.

Any mitigating factors?

No, not really. I never remembered Pretorius as heinous enough except, oh, yeah, attempting to devour all humanity which skipped over my mind. His personal villainy is revolting enough—turning his former associate into a brain-eating monster, horrible and prolonged Mind Rape, horribly killing Bubba—and he does this all on his own free will. Like, the characters initially speculate that whatever ate Pretorius became him, but Pretorius goes to lengths to show he's the exact same person and relishing his new power, trying to destroy humanity for a world of pleasure and to become the most powerful being in the universe. Nothing concerning.

Conclusion?

Wicked fun keep.

Thoughts?
