Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So Apophis will go between the two Vampire trees?

Anyway, here's the Mario tree for Fanworks; let me request this now and then go to bed.

Super Mario Bros.

  • Mario Brothers: King Koopa is the power-hungry ruler of the Koopa Troop and is far more villainous than his game counterpart. Obsessed with getting his hands on the Life Mushrooms, Koopa rallies his troops to storm Princess Toadstool's castle and kill her if she does not reveal their location. When the Mario Brothers attempt to stop his schemes, Koopa kills Luigi by using his fire breath to burn him alive. Koopa leads his army on an assault against the Princess's castle, killing dozens of Toads who were protecting her. Once it becomes clear that the Princess won't hand over the Life Mushrooms, Koopa kidnaps her to learn how create them for himself. He then sends a legion of Hammer Bros. to round up the remaining Toads for his own purposes. When Mario finally confronts him to save the Princess, Koopa proceeds to taunt him over Luigi's death and promises that he will share his brother's fate.
  • Super Mario 64: Last Impact: Rashay is a snarky, cruel moon spirit who seeks to force the moon to crash into the Mushroom Kingdom, and kill everyone on the planet solely for the thrill of it. After revealing his presence near the end of the game, he kidnaps Princess Peach and forces Mario to exchange a large amount of Power Stars for the Princess to ensure her safety. After infiltrating his Moon Cellar, where at one point Mario is forced to fling himself through painful lava for Rashay's amusement, Mario fights Rashay only to find out that he can't be hurt through conventional means. Upon this revelation, Rashay defeats Mario and continues to viciously beat the fallen plumber even after his loss, purely out a deranged sense of bloodlust.

Now...as Scraggle and I just saw this one?

What's the work?

Baron Blood is a 1972 Italian film directed by the legend Mario Bava. Concerning a dumbass named Peter Kleist who checks out his ancestral family castle, the home of his ancestor Otto von Kleist, known as Baron Blood for torturing and murdering over 100 villagers to feed his sadism. Quoth Wikipedia? Legend has it that he burned a witch named Elizabeth Hölle at the stake, who cursed him with a spell that would allow him to rise from the dead so that she could take her revenge on him again and again...Peter, not believing it...resurrects great granddad...

Who is Otto von Kleist?

A relentless sadist known as Baron Blood who, as we see, kept a torture chamber where he tortured and murdered dozens of innocents for fun. After he burned Elizabeth and was cursed, the Baron was killed and entombed until Peter revives him by accident. Confused at first, von Kleist readjusts very quickly, murdering a doctor who tries to help him and then a gravedigger who stumbles upon him. Peter and his love interest Eva begin suspecting something is odd, and then the Baron catches the man responsible for the castle's renovation and hangs him, before the cretraker catches the body. von Kleist drags him to the dungeon and kills him by putting him in a spike lined coffin...and then shutting it.

The castle is then purchased by a mysterious wealthy fellow named Becker....while von Kleist stalks everyone, as Peter and Eva visit a spirit medium to get help from Elizabeth's spirit. Von Kleist murders the medium, too. Turns out, Becker? Is, of course, the Baron and ambushes Peter, his uncle Karl and Eva, dragging them to his remodeled torture chamber where he, I swear has enacted his own scream track at the push of a button. As he intends to torture the group to death? eva somehow uses the amulet of Elizabeth that awakens von Kleist's victims, when her blood falls upon the caretaker's body.

The victim of the Baron rise and corner an agonized von Kleist, when they strap him to his own torture implements and grab the pincers, pokers and more...beginning to carve and rip him apart as von Kleist screams in vain, the heroes escaping as Elizabeth Holle enjoys her bloody retribution...

Heinousness?

Only villain with a BUNCH of villains who he kills in absolute agony and tries for some horrific torture.

Mitigating Qualities?

Nope. He fails to kill a little girl at one point, but benevolence or standards are never even implied to drive his actions. Besides this, I was worried von Kleist would lack the personality...until we see Becker, who is the best thing about the movie, dripping with hammy, delightful villainy. Von Kleist is a sadist and a murderer, who loves torturing people to death, and he has more than enough by way of persona and presence to keep.

Conclusion?

Ooh yeah.

What's The Work?

Robin Hood (2018) by Otto Bathurst and starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

The Sheriff of Nottingham is the corrupt official and ruler of Nottingham who serves as the right hand man of the Cardinal, who are plotting to overthrow the King of England in a conspiracy that involves the Crusades. The plot of the war started when they paid the Saracen army to fight against the English and wipe out the King's armies so that the Church can take over and rule England, all so they can satisfy their greed and obtain power.

Raised to be a greedy and ruthless man, the Sheriff forces young nobleman to participate in the Crusades and fight against the Saracens, people who aren't aware of the corrupt deal between the Church and their superiors, creating meaningless bloodshed for the sake of greed. Such cruelty also includes taking Arabs and executing them, which leads to the Sheriff's right hand, Guy of Gisbourne, to kill Yahya's (nicknamed John) son and has him pronounce Robin of Loxley dead when he commits mutiny to try and save the boy.

When Robin returns home, he learns the Sheriff seizes his lands and wealth to go towards the war effort. However like every person he has taken money from, the Sheriff is simply stealing this money for himself and his higher ups. He also has exiled many citizens of Nottingham to the mines due to being made homeless from his harsh taxes. When Robin becomes a vigilante and thief known as 'The Hood', the Sheriff places a bounty on him and becomes more harsh and cruel with his treatment of citizens.

The Sheriff then has Gisbourne attack the mines and burn it to the ground to flush out 'The Hood', leading to the injury and deaths of many innocent people. His men capture John and they torture him for information on 'The Hood'. The Sheriff also coldly taunts John about his son's death during a talk of philosophy, enraging John and almost making him attack the Sheriff.

Robin rallies the people to fight against the Sheriff and his tyranny, leading to an all-out war. However fearing that only more lives will be taken, Robin surrenders himself and the Sheriff is pissed, as Robin pretended to be a corrupt nobleman to get intel for his heists. When Robin taunts him with a childhood memory, the Sheriff furiously declares to Robin that he will 'drown him in his own piss' and send Marian, his love interest, to the Arabs to be raped continuously. When John sneaks up on him and prepares to hang him, the Sheriff pathetically begs for his life, only to be killed by him and Robin.

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

He talks to Robin about how he was an orphan who grew up in the care of a home run by the Church, who physically abused him as a child. However it's honestly a poor and weak excuse to justify any of the heinous and cruel acts the Sheriff commits in the film.

He has no real loyalty to anyone except the Cardinal, but the Cardinal is just as bad. He casually remarks to Robin that he wants to round up all the nobles in Nottingham and slaughter them due to how annoying and whiny he finds them. He cares nothing for the citizens of Nottingham, stealing their money for his own gain and forcing them into the mines when they can't provide or are poor.

His behaviour is like a sociopath, puts on a calm and civil face to others, but when he is angered lets his impulses take over and becomes very bloodthirsty and vulgar towards people around him. His taunting of the death of John's son shows how little he cares for the feelings of others, when physically torturing John didn't work he psychologically does by implying his son died in fear and cursing John's name.

He is a bully and abusive asshole to Friar Tuck, insulting and hitting him whenever he goes out of line or does something against his wishes.

Heinousness

Greed is the defining trait of the Sheriff, every heinous and cruel action he does is either for petty rage or greed. He taxes and seizes assets and wealth from people under the false reason of adding to the war effort to fuel his own selfish avarice. He has citizens pay back these debts in the mines where they starve and die from overworking themselves. He has Gisbourne, who is quite the bloodthirsty murderer, slaughter people on his behest and burn down the mines in an attempt to find 'The Hood' and brutally tortures others for information.

He's a tyrant in nearly every way possible. He also like many of the incarnations of the Sheriff is deep down a coward and when on the brink of death begs for his life like a pathetic piece of shit, getting no mercy for his crimes and sins. The Cardinal may be his higher up and is no doubt a corrupt bastard himself, but the Sheriff's sociopathic nature and utter disregard for human life and compassion makes him quite the heinous villain.

Final Verdict

I believe he qualifies. He doesn't really have any villains in the film to compare to and they're either beneath him or too out of focus to really know if they are as worse or much worse. Also for a bonus round, I am adding a quote from the Sheriff. Not to necessarily prove he qualifies, but for fun. But if they help then by means, the more the merrier.

You want to see fear? I'll send my men to raid the mines tonight. Now when that's done, I'll take the commoners for everything they've got, from their pisspots to their pocket coins. And when that is done, I will burn their shit slums to the ground, just to remind them they're not the people, they're my subjects. Will that satisfy you, priest?

[tup] Sheriff. So he was abused...yet works with the Cardinal?

Could the Cardinal himself count?

Sheriff is the second (third? Was there another?) CM for Ben Mendelsohn after Orson Krennic.

As for the Injustice 2 comic, I asked, and apparently there wasn't anything of note.

Also, Happy Mother's Day! Favorite CM mother? I'll go with one of my own candidates, our very own Scraggle's Helen Valentine.

1. He was raised by the Church who are in the film corrupt and greedy. He would have learned to become a greedy power hungry man from them and worked himself up to becoming The Dragon to the Cardinal.

2. He could count as the Greater-Scope Villain of the film. He is responsible for the Crusade due to paying the Saracens to fight against England and like Honest from Akame Ga Kill! is the source of the corruption and greed in the Church. Granted, he doesn't do anything directly, but Shinnok in Mortal Kombat Annihilation counts and he doesn't do much directly, so I guess he could qualify. By all means ACW, watch the film (If you've already seen it, then that's okay) and make an EP.

3. It's his second CM role.
