Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Found Alas, Poor Villain on the Scream page for Roman and Jill. Eliminate?

Quote suggestion for Lord Voldemort. It's from the film.

I'd usually wait to fully finish a series before EP-ing someone but I'm a bit lacking on time and...this guy is a easy keeper and manages to be one of the nastiest Serial Killer in a manga filled with them despite lacking resources.

Ok. Let's begin.

Setting

Deathtopia is a manga from Yoshinobu Yamada, author of Cage of Eden. After an incident that left The Protagonist Kou Fujimara grievously injured; losing sight from both eyes, the college student undergoes surgery and miraculously survives. However, this event significantly changes Kou's life, as he gains extrasensory perception abilities that allows him to see the thoughts of the "Cheaters", humans with low-tier powers and a unusual proportion to violence.

Now, while Cheaters are initially introduced as Always Chaotic Evil, we realize quickly that they aren't, we even see Cheaters that despite emiting auras that are scary as fuck really aren't a danger and live as any normal person without commiting any crime, others that have loved ones, others that have a Freudian Excuse. You get the point, Cheaters are persons.

However, this guy...is easily one of the absolute worst Cheaters.

Who is Reverse

Mitsuo Okita is a 35-years old men with a unusual passtime. Skin people alive.

...well, it's actually worse. Reverse has the power to emit pheromones that gives him the power to control every person at 2.5 meters of distance. His control of them is absolute and Mitsuo uses it to keep quiet to his victims as he "reverse" their skin as they are still alive and conscient as he does that.

Reverse knows that his actions aren't exactly subtle, so he kills in cycles of years. Having killed 28 persons over three "cycles", all of them with the same method as described above and including the family of Yui Kisaragi, one of the heroines of the story, who is alive only because she wasn't in home.

Yui hunts him for years until Reverse begins to kill again, killing a couple starting for the man before killing the terrified woman. Then, Yui, who was able to notice his modus operandi, deliverately calls his attention.

As Reverse attacks Yui, he is injured for her trap. Yui proceeds to arrest him but Reverse uses his powers to inmovilizate her, gloates about killing her family and tells her about the details before trying to skin her alive as well.

Reverse already introduced the knife when due to a chain of events caused to the Big Bad, The Protagonist Kou ends up showing one of his powers, share energy to people close to him, which ends up with a posessed Yui that nulls Reverse's powers and kills him with a single hit of her katana.

Heinous standards?

The Big Part. Deathtopia villains are nasty, killers and murderes everywhere. But Reverse...Reverse had a sizeable bodycount (30 persons) and he kills people in such a horrible way that he just...stands out easily.

His awfulness is even...impressive when you realize that he has nothing but his power. He can easily be killed at a safe distance. He risk himself everytime he search a victim. Other villains have usually a net of support somehow, usually being famous or rich. In terms of resources, Mitsuo is a lone wolf at the same level of a mook.

He is a very small fry in the dark world of Deathtopia...and one of the uglier ones.

Seriously. His method is just horrid.

Mitagating traits?

Nothing. He's just a sadist. The Cheaters have moral agency. He is a monster because he wants to be one.

Verdict?

[tup][awesome]

Yes to Reverse.

@ ACW, do you want to go with that picture of the Evil Power Master? Maybe Lighty has come across a picture of a villain doing something really evil in one of the Fighting Fantasy books.

Apparently, in the original 1995 version of Tattoo of Death, there is a picture of Big Guy using a laser to blow a hole through the main character, but I have the 2005 reprint, where the artwork was changed to be less gruesome.

Although you know what is really crazy, there is an actual CYOA animated movie (direct to DVD):

I'm gonna go against the grain and vote down Frost... but I won't be too broken up if she goes up. I mean, there are some good points there. She just doesn't hit me in the same way as others do. Perhaps I'm just desensitised because of the likes of Kano and Noob Saibot, who are both non-keeps since Noob has big agency problems and Kano is not really heinous enough and has Pet the Dog moments with Kabal and Kobra.

I actually kinda wish we could get Sektor up, but that might be a harder sell since Frost turning into my murder-toaster-wife makes him less unique.

Yes to Reverse.

So before I start my DC talk tomorrow I decided to get a Marvel one out the way.

Now that I watched the directors cut, Daredevil is a 2003 film that is the second live action adaptation of the Marvel character. By day he's blind lawyer Matt Murdoch, by night he's the vigilante Daredevil fighting criminals that escape through the legal system. Now, this film as a CM in Bullseye, but I think we overlooked the Big Bad, who I wanted to bring up after seeing the directors cut.

So I present to you Wilson "The Kingpin" Fisk.

Who is he ? What does he do ?

Wilson Fisk started out as a hitman working for a crime boss named Fallon. When Matt Murdoch was a kid, his father Jack "The Devil" Murdoch was part of an underground boxing club and was supposed to throw a fight, but didn't due to Matt cheering him on. As punishment, Fallon has Jack beaten to death with Fisk being the one who kills him. Over the years, Fisk rose to prominence as a powerful businessman in his public persona and the secret Kingpin controlling all the crime in New York. Murders, rapes, muggings, you name it. As the Kingpin he's also been providing means to allow criminals to escape the legal system and go unpunished, leaving a bit of a mess for Daredevil to clean up. There is a subplot were Murdoch and his associate Happy Hoga- Franklin Nelson have to investigate the murder of a prostitute who slept around with one of Fisk's henchmen and was leaking information of the Kingpin to the press, and in turn was murdered to silence her and have a junkie framed for it.

When Fisk himself is introduced, he talks to his henchman Wesley about how in the ancient times, Romans would cut the tongues out of their bodyguards; out of no where Fisk suddenly murders two of his own bodyguards for no discernible reason. Fisk is called into a meeting with Nikolas Natchios, a business partner who wants to be cut out from Fisk due to the media catching onto the Kingpin. Fisk decides to kill Natchios and have his posthumously framed as the Kingpin. Fisk then calls in the over the top and unsubtle hitman, Bullseye, and eventually Bullseye kills Natchios for Fisk.

Later, Matt Murdoch himself learns of a breakthrough in the murdered prostitute case and goes to interrogate a Dirty Cop on Fisk's payroll. Said cop reveals how far the Kingpin's empire goes and his when the Kingpin calls a hit on someone, he also has the targets entire family killed. Fisk then orders the death of Nicolas' daughter and Matt's love interest Elektra. Despite Elektra being an Action Girl, she is seemingly killed by Bullseye (sequel happens, she's the star). Daredevil gets into a fight with Bullseye and hospitalizes him after finding out the truth about Fisk. Fisk realizes Daredevil is coming for him and wants to face him alone. In their inevitable confrontation, Fisk initially gets the upper hand due the Daredevil being wounded from his fight with Elektra and later Bullseye. Fisk unmasks Daredevil, who gets the upper hand by blinding Fisk the buildings sprinklers. After kneecapping Fisk, Murdoch refrained from killing him and leaves him to the police; Fisk says he will tell everyone who Daredevil is, but Murdoch states that Fisk will be mocked for getting beaten by a blind guy, to which Fisk says he will get out eventually.

Fisk is ultimately sent to prison and we don't get to see any revenge on account of the sequel not featuring him or even being Daredevil's story. I like to think that Logan's time travel brought about a Cosmic Retcon to the universe and, including the lives Daredevil and those around him and that's were we get the modern superhero reboots from.

Redeeming Qualities or Freudian Excuse ?

This Fisk ? Nah. He's beholden to none of his usual redeeming qualities in favour of him being Faux Affably Evil. No tragic past of an Abusive Parent, no Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas; the existence of Vanessa and Richard Fisk never comes up here. Nothing. He does send all his men home when Daredevil finally comes after him, but that's only because he wanted to face Daredevil himself out of some kind of warrior pride he has.

Heinous standard ?

Compared to Bullseye who is a Psycho for Hire who kills innocent people left right and centre regardless of being paid, Fisk is more of a background figure but his crimes are more wide scale; while he's not the source of the cities crime he's the one running everything from behind the scenes and had things get as bad as it did. Just about every murder and crime in the movie can ultimately be traced back to him, and he gets a few more in the directors cut. What sweetens the deal here is how he calls hits on the whole families of his target which is stated to be part of his MO.
