Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Just finished Kazuhiro Fujita's Black Museum manga. There are two candidates I have been considered but I'll do EP on one of them soon as I will talk with Lighty about this tongue

HT: True about Seagal, but Mel Gibson's no angel himself. As for Seagal, he's BIG plans with Putin, among other things.

If you're interested, Seagal played another villain, but may have loved ones.

What's with the requests?

[up][up] Add Mel to that list. Lethal Weapon 2, Blood Father, possibly others.

Aaaaaand here's the writeup for Grande of Tweeny Witches:

  • Tweeny Witches: Grande is the leader of the warlocks who performs an ethnic cleansing campaign against the wizards. Prior to the main story, Grande attempted to destroy the human realm using dark magic and to this end, he enacts a plan to steal the True Book of Spells from the Grand Master of Witches. At one point, Grande imprisoned a human for 6 years because the latter wants to know the truth behind magic. After he failed on attempting to manipulate a Prophet to do his bidding due to the prophet opposed his evil plan, Grande then swallows the Prophet while the latter's son witnessed the horror. When the captive fairies escaped from the Witch Realm after the attack, Grande orders his men to attack the Witch Realm and to capture the escaped fairies and then manipulates a dark magic user witch named Eva under the pretense that he would make her a great witch which resulted on her fell into a Mystical Plague which resulted on her lose the access to magic. After Eva slowly becomes weak, Grande then tricks her by offering her magic with the True Book of Spell. Despite his well-intentioned claims to make a new home for his species, Grande is a power hungry warlock who tries to use the black magic so that he could be the ruler of all species.

Send this to the drafts soon enough and ~IúkaSylvie. Lmk what are your thoughts on it before I add this to the drafts.

Also, @ACW, Lord Sadayoshi writeup will come soon once I proposed the Black Museum candidate but not after I had a private chat with Lighty first because of his interest of Kazuhiro Fujita's mangas

~ElfenLiedFan90, thank you for the write-up, but there's some innaccuracies.

  • The Human Realm should be capitalized since that's how the official subtitles by Media Blasters spell the word.
  • Jidan came to the Magical Realm twice. The first time, he wanted to know the truth behind magic, and the second time, the warlocks imprisoned him for 6 years.
  • Arusu is responsible for the escape of the captive fairies from the Witch Realm at the beginning of the series. The warlocks discover about what happened to the captive fairies following a hydra fairy's attack on the Witch Realm in "Witch Evaluation" and "Hydra's Attack".
  • The Mystical Plague is rampaging not because of Grande, but because the overexploitation of magical and scientific resources causes the light of the Sanctuary, the source of all life in the Magical Realm, to fade away.
  • It is not the black magic, but dark magic.

~IúkaSylvie Right... How should I change the part though?

Hmmmm.... How about this one:

Grande is the leader of the warlocks who performs an ethnic cleansing campaign against the wizards for more than two centuries. Prior to the main story, Grande attempted to destroy the human realm using dark magic and to this end, he enacts a plan to steal the True Book of Spells from the Grand Master of Witches. At one point, Grande imprisoned a human for 6 years because of Grande's paranoia of humans. After Eva fell into a Mystical Plague which resulted on her slowly becomes weak, Grande then tricks her by making her using the True Book of Spell. ~ElfenLiedFan90, how about this one:

  • Tweeny Witches: Grande is the leader and general of the warlocks who continues an at least 2-century-long ethnic cleansing campaign against the wizards. His ultimate goal is the destruction of the Human Realm with dark magic. To this end, he enacted a plan to steal the True Book of Spells from the Grand Master of Witches. Grande imprisoned a male human named Jidan twice, the second time for 6 years, because of Grande's paranoia of humans. When a prophet opposed his evil plan, Grande swallowed the prophet while the latter's son, Sigma, witnessed the horror. When the warlocks discover that all the captive fairies escaped from the Witch Realm, Grande orders his men to attack the Witch Realm and to capture the escaped fairies and then manipulates an inept apprentice witch named Eva into casting dark magic under the pretense that he would make her a great witch. After Eva falls into a Mystical Plague, which causes her to lose access to magic and to grow weak, Grande tricks her by offering her magic with the True Book of Spells. Despite his well-intentioned claims to make a new home for his species to escape the eventual destruction of the Magical Realm, Grande is a power-hungry warlock who tries to use dark magic so that he could rule everything.

Okay, I watched this animated movie recently and going to try to propose one candidate.

What's the Work

"Superman: Brainiac Attacks" is a very generic superhero movie from 2006, clearly intended to cash in on the mild success of "Superman Returns". Plot is very simple, after recent fight with Brainiac, Superman managed to seemingly destroy him, only for Lex Luthor to rebuild him with goal of destroying Superman and taking over Metropolis, but Brainiac has his own generic plans on Metropolis.

Ok, my candidate obviously is Brainiac.

Who is He/What Has He Done

Brainiac in this version is extremely different character compared to his usual incarnation. Instead of gathering data and destroying worlds, Brainiac here is much more generic "take over the world" kind of guy, who just gathers data to become "ultimate intellect". He starts by dodging shooting from Lex Luthor's satellite "Lex 9000" and crashing on the Earth, close to Lex Lab, that controls said satellite. Blasting in to the lab (possibly killing dozens of scientists there with his blast), he hacked in to data there and takes control of many weapons from Earth nearby (such as rockets, lasers, nuclear warhead and etc.) as well as that satellite. As Superman interrupts him, he sends nuclear warhead toward Metropolis, forcing Superman to fly there and stop it, while he completes gathering of data and completely takes control of nearby weaponry. As Superman arrives, after stopping the warhead, they fights, with Brainiac using all weaponry at his disposal and comes close to killing Superman, while gloating that he will "send humanity in to dark ages". But Superman manages to gather his strength and froze Brainiac in his place with his breath, and then destroys him. One of Brainiac's chips manages to stay intact, for Lex Luthor to arrive and decide to rebuild Brainiac to destroy Superman, mistakenly believing that he can control Brainiac or deal with him after that.

Brainiac in his new (quite generically stupid looking) robot body tracks down Superman (with the help of Superman DNA, which he received from Lex Luthor) in the restaurant on his date with Lois. Crashing in the building, Brainiac tries to kill Superman casing much destruction and injuring Lois with his kryptonite ray, making her sick and on the verge of death. Angered Superman tears Brainiac apart and flies to find the cure for Lois in Phantom Zone, only for Brainiac to self-repair quickly and track down Superman in his Fortress of Solitude. He tries to download all data from his kryptonian computer, but Superman activates self-destruction, making Brainiac flee and assume that Superman is dead.

With Superman gone, Brainiac heads toward Metropolis and declares it now his city. After easily beating Lex Luthor and revealing that he deactivated self-destruct mechanism that Luthor installed in his new body, Brainiac starts causing destruction all over the city and killing countless numbers of people (people explicitly shown to be in places that Brainiac destroyed). As Superman returns from Phantom Zone with a cure for Lois, he fights Brainiac, who continues causing destruction all over the city (at one point even using Luthor in his Mecha suit as a weapon) while fighting Superman, endangering hundreds of people, whom Superman saves along the way. Getting annoyed, Brainiac decided to overload nuclear reactor (with scientists still inside) near by the city to cause a giant explosion. When Superman stops him, angry Brainiac starts to simply chaotically attack buildings and streets of Metropolis, intending to kill hundreds more innocent people (including children). As Superman destroys most of his body, Brainiac detach his head and goes to the hospital, and when Superman tries to cure Lois, Brainiac takes away and smashes that cure, simply out of spite to Superman. Furious Superman destroys the remains of Brainiac's body and his "brain" chip, finally killing Brainiac for good.

Freudian Excuse/Mitigating Factors

Not an inch. Brainiac has full on moral agency here and personality (he has quite a lot of dialogue through the movie).

Heinous Standard

"Superman: Brainiac Attacks" is stand-alone animated movie, not connected to either DCAU (even though they use the same art style) nor any other universe, so it's judged by its own standard. Brainiac has quite a decent bodycount in this movie, killing dozens of people and attempting to kill thousands. His only rival here is Luthor, who is essentially a joke in this version, never even attempting to kill anyone other than Superman.

Although this version of Brainiac is quite low key compared to his other versions, in that he didn't shown to go around the universe destroying worlds (this doesn't even mentioned here), but rather just wants to take over Earth, while "driving humanity back in dark ages", as he said himself. But it's worth considering that he doesn't even have his ship and resources (that most of his version have), seemingly acting on his own, without any army that his usual self has.

Final Verdict

I want to know what other people think.

How's this?:

  • Grande is the leader and general of the warlocks who continues an at least 2-century-long ethnic cleansing campaign against the wizards. His ultimate goal is the destruction of the Human Realm with dark magic. To this end, he enacted a plan to steal the True Book of Spells from the Grand Master of Witches.

[tup] Lance Henriksen's Brainiac. I just got back from watching a video that had to clarify wether or not this was DCAU connected or no (short version is its not...but apparently Batman and Harley Quinn. Before anyone asks, no one counts in the latter).
