Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

On an unrelated note but today marks the 80th year on which Batman was created and the debut of his 1000th issue. Man talk about a long ride with lots of cm's from Batman media as a result.

Alrighty, from Elfen's post, the short story Shall We Go Walking by Night? And thanks for this one, elf

So, Shuhei Sakuya is a detective talking with a young lady named Sayaka...in the area? There's been a string of nasty little murders. Young women carved up, their bodies...oddly severed....Sayaka is creeped out, no less by disturbing childhood memories of a woman's severed head, as she visits her artistic uncle Nahiki.

Who of course is the fucking killer.

Who is Nahiki?

Sayaka's pleasant, artistic uncle...who's a deranged nutjob, living in his mansion in the middle of nowhere Now, years ago, Nahiki was also an art collector which led to conflict with his wife..as she kind of had objections to spending all their disposable income on art. Now, one day, a freak accident resulted in a weather dial on the mansion falling and splitting her apart, with Nahiki rolling it into the woods to hide it, hence Sayaka's dark memories as she saw it as a child when nobody else did.

Nahiki was entranced by this. He began to lust after blood and death, and found artistic inspiration in it. He began to hunt down women, taking them to the mansion, having rigged the dial to split them front to back, to carry that out, kill them and use them for the paintings, creating a massive work of mutilated, dead women...and he wants one more for the piece: Sayaka herself. Capturing Sayaka, he strips her down, leaves her to be torn apart by the painting and gloats how she'll complete the work when...Shuhei arrives and fights back, revealing himself as a Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass who's the heir to a style of martial arts. In the proceeding battle? Sayaka is saved but Nahiki is killed by his own device...becoing the last piece of the painting.

Mitigating Qualities?

For a short story? No, Nahiki? We see the pattern and the murders. While his wife was an accident, he wasn't horrified. He simply loved it and became a serial killer for artistic inspiration afterward. And we see he has a great many victims, around a dozen from the painting. Pass.

Conclusion?

Easy keeper.

Quoth Repo: The genetic Opera? It's a thankless job, but somebody's got to do it, Mr

And second today, and my thanks to Duck for getting me this one...Trese.

What's the work?

Trese is a Filipino Komiks, about Alexandra Trese. When crimes get weird, the police go to Trese. All myths are true here, especially the myths of the Philippines....Trese is the heiress to Anton Trese, an Occult Detective himself, who handles crimes with her bodyguards, the Kambal...each story is typically standalone with Trese solving some sort of creepy crime in a badass fashion. Now, one flashback when Trese is younger features the origins of the Kambal, Basilio and Crispin...they were creepy, wicked little bastards, but even worse is their father, Talagbusao.

Who is Talagbusao?

A war god and sadistic monster who fathered his children on a human woman before he was sealed and sways them into mass killing, with the twin boys killing a bunch of people to eat their hearts, which results in the involvement of Anton Trese and his young daughter Alexandra. Now, Talagbusao's lover? Succeeds in freeing her significant other....however, Talagbusao? Never actually cared for her. What he wants are their kids....he wants to eat their hearts to empower himself and start some real wars....he proceeds to kill his lover when she trese to stop him and goes for the twins, seeking to devour their hearts.

Now, the Trese duo get inolved and managed to drive him off. Talagbusao is defeated and seemingly cast from reality. Basilio and Crispin end up having their bloodlust mitigated by magic masks Anton makes for them to become the Kambal, Alexandra's friends and guards....many years later, though? Things go wrong again. Talagbusao frees himself and begins inspiring new attacks to create chaos so he can get close to the boys and eat their hearts. He accomplishes this namely by provoking suicide bombings across Manila, terrorist attacks and large amounts of death to have a conflict with another baddie...whereupon he reveals himself and tries to kill Trese before advancing on his sons, aiming to tear their hearts out.

In the end, though, Trese gets the better of him again. In the final battle, she managesto knock him through reality itself, leaving Talagbusao...trapped in an online game, where the servers are redirected to have millions of players always fighting him. Talagbusao is trapped, but feels nothing but sheer bliss, fighting every moment ust as he'd love....but he's trapped from the world at whole, thankfully.

Heinousness?

Most villains in Trese are limited to a murder or other crime. There's a pedophile who molested one girl, and the other most despised villain is a serious case of values dissonance (she ran an illegal abortion clinic, abortion being illegal in the Philippines and I am not saying more about this), so Talagbusao? Sticks out enormously from the volumes I read.

Mitigating Factors?

No, the guy is fucking nuts. Just a depraved psycopath utterly dedicated to eating his sons' hearts to get stronger.

Conclusion?

A keeper. And the Netflix animated series is mine.

[tup] to everyone i’ve missed except Ayaka. The effort post for The Man and The Woman is ready, and I noticed the Netflix series adds more crimes and characterization to their rap sheet than the books ever did. With that said, here it is:

What’s the Work?:

A Series of Unfortunate Events is 2017-2019 Netflix series based on the book series of the same name. The series stars the Baudelaires as they attempt to foil the schemes of the villainous Count Olaf, who desires to inherit the Baudelaire Fortune. The trio encounter many foes during their adventures such as Count Olaf’s troupe, Esmé Squalor, and Carmelita Spats. But none of them can’t compare to their most vile enemies, An villainous duo feared by Series Narrator Lemony Snicket, and even Count Olaf himself... The Man with A Beard but No Hair and The Woman with Hair but No Beard.

Who are The Man with A Beard but No Hair and The Woman with Hair but No Beard? What do they do?:

The Man with A Beard but No Hair and The Woman with Hair but No Beard are the villainous heads of the Dark Side of V.F.D. with a love for arson and their real names being unknown due to Lemony being too frightened of them to say those names out loud, and are responsible for orchestrating the Schism from behind the scenes. Years prior to the events of the series, they encountered Count Olaf sometime after his father was accidentally killed by Beatrice, where they lied to Olaf that the V.F.D. betrayed him and proceed to manipulate him into becoming the arsonist villain he is today and have him join them.

Prior to the events of the third and final season, the duo personally burn down V.F.D. Headquarters so no one would learn of its secrets and to eliminate an potential survivor of an recent fire, which isn’t shown and is unknown is there are any casualties, but the results are shown, and the damage is pretty big, and the duo would gleefully go into detail on how they burned they place down, showing their sadistic love of arson. In season 3’s two part first episode, an Slippery Slope, the duo would make their introduction chasing Kit Snicket to a cliff, where they plan to throw her off of unless she gives them the Sugar Bowl. Kit refuses and jumps off the cliff, and uses her gliding wings to escape, causing the duo to send the eagles after her to kill her and steal the Sugar Bowl. They would make their next appearance later on, where they encounter the circus freaks, who state that Olaf will come running to save them if they scream for him. The duo respond to this by cruelly murdering the freaks just so they can see if Olaf cares... And Olaf didn’t care.

Having learned of Olaf’s location on top of the mountain from the freaks before murdering them, they proceed to head up there to confront Olaf where they show how unimpressed they are of Olaf’s antics and failures at the hands of the Baudelaires and they reveal to him that they burned down V.F.D. Headquarters so they can eliminate the aforementioned potential survivor. After that, they discover that Olaf has kept one of the Baudelaires, Sunny who is a infant, captured so he can receive the Baudelaire fortune as Klaus and Violet were presumed dead in the previous season finale. A while after this, while talking with Esmé Squalor, who they take interest in due to her personality and methods, though be reminded, not of actual care, but as someone they can use in their plans just like Olaf, who by the way, attempts to impress the duo with a play, which fails miserably.

The duo then proceeds to tell Olaf that they recruited him to spread fire and destruction across the land and NOT to prance around with a bunch of “talentless fools.” The Hook Handed Man then points that food that Sunny is seemingly cooking with an green cigarette smells great, the Duo turn to see Sunny with the cigarette lighted up, which they immediately recognize as a Verdant Flammable Device, which basically just signaled their location. Calling Olaf and the troupe fools, the Man proceeds to destroy the device before he and the woman criticize Olaf for giving it to Sunny in the first place before concluding that Sunny is a spy. They then tell Olaf that the Baudelaire Fortune is small potatoes, and state why would he settle on ONE fortune, when he could have it all, before taking him and Squalor to explain the real reason why they are on the mountain while also having Sunny locked up.

Said reason is that they are planning an holiday called False Spring to lure an group of Snow Scouts into an trap so they can capture them and force them to work for them and also receive their fortunes, and there are a lot of children in said group, and to top it all they planned to burn every single one of their homes with their parents inside them, which kill them, and leave their children as orphans. When they explain this to Olaf after having Sunny’s cage covered to keep her from watching them, and sending Esmé to eliminate any volunteers who may have the Sugar Bowl, Olaf responds to this by saying that they plan to indoctrinate them through emotionally distinct parenting and Stockholm Syndrome similar to what they did to Olaf.

The duo respond by stating that they aren’t emotionally distinct... It’s that Olaf didn’t deserve praise, showing their truly abusive side by criticizing Olaf, stating they only took him in because he had the potential to light a dozen fires, but not anymore as they claim that Olaf’s obsession with the Baudelaires is an disgrace and had led to his defeat and humiliation. Olaf tries to state that it’s in the past as the Baudelaires are dead to him, but the Man states, “Not all of them,” while pointing to Sunny’s cage, to which Olaf quickly figures out that they want him to MURDER Sunny, who is, again, an infant. Olaf objects at first, stating that if he kills her, he won’t get the Baudelaire fortune, to which the duo responds if Olaf wants their respect and their love, which the woman says in a very mocking tone of voice, then he should do something for once in his “pathetic life” and throw Sunny off of the cliff. As Olaf can’t bring himself to do it, as he would lose the fortune, he tries to have his troupe do the job instead, but most of them leave Olaf out of disgust, except for the Hook Handed Man, who proceeds to throw the cage off of the cliff, seemingly killing Sunny. (Spoilers: She’s actually okay, as the Hook Handed Man has secretly let Sunny out of the cage without letting anyone else, including the duo, know)

This is when Klaus, Violet, and their new friend, Quigley Quagmire arrive to save Sunny, in which the duo reveal that Sunny is dead, devastating Klaus and Violet. Olaf is happy to see Klaus and Violet alive, as now he still can receive the Baudelaire Fortune, but the duo call him an idiot for failing to kill Klaus and Violet, and disown him on the spot by stating he disappointed them and that they’ll do better with the next recruits. Speaking of which, the Snow Scouts, led by Carmelita Spats, who is in on the scheme, finally arrive at the mountain where the duo proceed to lure them to the trap under the lie that they’re celebrating false spring. Klaus and Violet attempt to warn the scouts not to listen to them, but it’s too late, as the scouts walk right onto the net, in which The Man and The Woman use to cruelly capture the scouts by having their eagles grab the net and trap them in the net and fly away as the kids start screaming in terror. It’s truly an horrifying sight.

The duo then tells Olaf that they “were” planning on taking Olaf back, but now they were taking his car, in which the Woman had somehow stole the keys to. Before driving away, the duo tell Esmé they would be in touch as they are impressed with her work and had decided to make her their new pawn and telling her they’ll contact her with her next assignment. Their two part episodic debut ends with them not only burning the homes of the parents, but also an large portion of an large city, and it’s confirmed that they are ALOT of casualties, mainly the parents. To make matters worse, the duo treat it like an theater show as they TOAST to fire they caused and the large amount of lives they have taken.

They would make their next appearance in the second part of Penultimate Peril, where they appear as judges and have Olaf kidnap Justice Strauss so she won’t intervene. The duo would then place the guilty verdict on Klaus, Violet, and Sunny in an attempt to eliminate them once and for all, and attempts to have them arrested, but the orphans escape with Olaf to the elevator, which goes to the basement as Olaf believes the sugar bowl is down there. When it’s revealed that it’s not down there, Olaf plans on poisoning the hotel, partly due to the Man and The Woman’s abusive nature, but the orphans convince him to start an fire in the hotel instead so they can warn everyone. When the orphans warn everyone on the first floor, the Man and The Woman suddenly appear where they praise Olaf for thinking big. But Olaf tricks them into believing he had actually started an party instead, and the duo angrily tell Olaf that he disappointed them for the last time, to which Olaf smugly agrees. As the elevator leaves the floor, Strauss screams that, “YOU’RE AN DISGRACE TO THE LEGAL PROFESSION!”

Like everyone else at the hotel, the fates of The Man and The Woman are unknown, but since Olaf had tricked them into believing that there is no fire, they most likely perished in the fire, ending their arson ways for good.

Migrating Factors:

From what I can see, none. They clearly don’t have for Olaf, only taking him in as they found him useful to their goals. And while they showed interest to Esmé, it’s only because of her being more vile than Olaf and don’t actually care her at all. In fact, in the books, they congratulate Olaf for his deeds, here in the Netflix series, they never once did, and belittle him in every chance they get, and while the Man does briefly praise Olaf for starting an fire at the hotel, which is for some reason listed in the heartwarming page, it’s only because he thought he was thinking big, and not in caring nature at all. Hell, the woman even said the words, our love, in an clear mocking tone of voice. And to top it all off, they showed absolutely no signs, not even when they’re roasting to the city fires, and considering their nature, it’s pretty clear that they don’t even care about each other, only working together because they have the same goals.

Heinous Standard:

While Olaf is an truly villainous man. he has plenty of redeeming qualities, had an sort of death equals redemption moment, and did show horror at Olivia’s demise. The Man with A Beard but No Hair and The Woman with Hair but No Beard has NO redeeming qualities, barely have any comedic moments, and are taken completely seriously. Hell, the Netflix series give them more crimes and characterization than the books ever did, which I believe helps their case. Even with Olaf, the duo easily pass the heinous standard in all 3 episodes they are appear, and that counts their two part debut. In An Slippery Slope, they murder an group of Circus freaks just so they can see if Olaf cares, are emotionally abusive to Olaf, orders Olaf to kill Sunny just so he can prove his wickedness, and in their third appearance, try to have the Baudelaires arrested and likely sentenced to death. But what I believe makes the count is their moral event horizon, which is one of the most vile acts in the show. They cruelly kidnaps and group of snow courts to force them to work for them and to steal fortunes, and then they proceed to burn an large portion of an city down, killing the scouts’ parents, and likely a few more people in the process. And yes, we DO get an sight of the city burning. And I counted the kids, eight of them, and considering each kids has two parents, we’re looking at 16 parents that died, combine that with the freaks that they killed, and the potential other victims in the city fire, and their body count is pretty high. They even went as far as to TOAST to the scene, which makes it even worse. From I read of the books, the duo were given enough characterization and crimes for them to qualify. Here, they are given quite enough, and are even more vile than they were in the book, especially in their moral event horizon.

Conclusion:

After all of that, I will conclude that this duo are easy keeps. But of course, what do you guys think?

Yes to all the candidates I missed, here is my write up for Hobgoblin:

  • Spider-Man: The Venom Factor: Hobgoblin, real name Jason Macendale, is a petty thug who's greed and ambition leads him to attempt one of his most audacious and vile schemes. Hobgoblin has been successfully stealing radioactive materials across New York, despite Spider-Man's attempts to stop him. In one such theft, Hobgoblin attempts to kill everyone on a US Military sub with a gas bomb, after stealing radioactive materials from the sub. Hobgoblin has also been dumping radioactive waste into the sewers and subway tunnels, leading to radiation poisoning among several members of New York's homeless population. Eventually, Hobgoblin gives the news media a tape, explaining that he has constructed a dirty nuclear bomb. Hobgoblin demands New York City pay him 1 billion dollars within 12 hours or he will set off the nuke, destroying Manhattan and spreading deadly radiation to the rest of New York and the surrounding areas. When Hobgoblin's blackmail scheme is about to be foiled, Hobgoblin attempts to set off the nuke out of spite.

Speaking of writeups, here's mine for Anderson. I'm saving my Crow writeups for when I'm done looking through the rest of the comics.

Animal World (2018): Anderson is the creator of Animal World, a deadly card game where a poor man can become rich in one night. He gathers contestants by tricking people into paying a mortgage, only to have them go in-debt and become so desperate for money that they sign up to compete. With the game showcased to him and his rich friends who bet on the contestants, Anderson doesn’t care about the contestants' plight, and even shoots one in the face for cheating. Should contestants lose, they are taken to the black room to be killed or painfully experimented on. Having killed Zheng Kai-Si’s father in front of him, Anderson has Zheng compete in the game just to watch him struggle.

[tup] to the Lensmen duo, Talagsuo, and Nahiki. A belated [tup] to the Governor as well.

The Man and The Woman are tough for me due to the inherent sillyness of the series, need to think on them.

Having recently played through Dying Light, I believe that the Big Bad, Rais, counts as a CM, and though he has been discussed before, will anyone mind if I do a re-proposal with new evidence that wasn't included in the original discussions on him?
