Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Oh rigjt.

[tup]Hill.

Sounds just bad enough for NCIS with the repeated torture and pedophila.

I assume that the original flicks are most likely Maneater series? At most, the only one I watched from that was Swamp Devil, but unsure on that one, given some possible mitigating factors towards the end of the film.

[up]Understood.

Just guess I wanted to be very specific to make sure I had him covered.

Also, in regards to Scifi Channel Original movies, I think they come in three flavors: the rare genuine gems, the so bad its good b-movie cheese, and ungodly horrible. Good luck with the last category. When they get bad, they are BAD. I still remember Heatstroke, worst compositing I have ever seen in my life.

From what I remember of Swamp Devil being that the main villain was a Serial Killer and Serial Rapist. But from where I personally had issues with was the fact that the killer seemed to have a redeeming relationship with a woman who was implied to have brought him back to life through magic.

Granted, it's been a long time since I've watched it.

[up] Can suggest Rock Monster if you can find it. CGI is horrid, even by Syfy standards, but one of the few were the monster is an evil human transformed into a monster so might be worth looking at.

I don't think it's terribly uncommon for popular American shows to be remade in Korea. In fact, this is something that happnes a lot. The Office may be the most famous example of a British show getting a US remake, along with House of Cards of course. It happening the other way is very common as well, but I won't get into that now because I'm lazy and my memory is hazy.

Well I said I would EP Lee Mullens from Criminal Minds after I watched the episode he was in (“Remembrance of Things Past” from Season 6), so with that here it is.

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

Lee Mullens is a prolific Serial Killer called “The Butcher” who has kidnapped and killed at least 24 women. His MO consists of strapping them onto a table, torturing and sodomizing (anally raping) them with sharp instruments and a electroshock machine, stabbing them in non-fatal areas to maximize the pain. He would then force the women to call their loved ones to inform them that they were "enjoying" the torture before Mullens slowly kills them.

He does this exact same thing to his own wife, tricking his own son Colby into knocking her out, and make him watch as he tortures, sodomizes and kills her. This would lead to a vicious cycle where Lee would horrifically abuse Colby throughout his entire life, leading Colby into becoming an unwilling accomplices to Lee’s crime kidnapping 3 women for Lee to torture, sodomize and kill.

Eventually the BAU would finally find all about Lee Mullens murders and bring him along with his son to justice.

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

Nothing his known about Lee’s past other than he was a Serial Killer back then and a horrifically abusive father who trick his own son into helping him kill his mother, while making him watch his mother’s torture and death and isn’t given a reason for doing all of this other than he’s a deprived sadist who enjoys people’s suffering to the fullest.

As for Redeeming Qualities, he has killed his own wife and never showed any care or love for his son Colby, merely subjecting him to horrific abuse to that he can control him into turning him into his accomplice.

He might have Alzheimer in is later years, but that does nothing to do with his moral agency and even during some instances mainly in front of the BAU he exaggerates it to make it seem like he’s the unwilling accomplice while his son’s the mastermind while it’s the other way around, and later drops the act upon being exposed.

Heinousness

Okay rip on me for bringing up someone from criminal minds, but before you all assume, just look at the EP and keep in mind Mullens is the reason why Andrus couldn’t count.

While Mullens might be similar to Andrus in terms of method and body count, I think Mullens comes across as even worse since Mullens his more detailed in his torture of his victims, such as constant electrocution stabbing them in non-fatal areas for even more pain and sodomized, which is described to even more painful than regular rape, all while forcing him to call their loved one and say that they enjoy it all.

Along with additional depravities of subjecting his own son to horrific abuse, which includes manipulating him into knocking his mother out and making him watch as he slowly tortures, sodomize, and eventually kills her, and mold him into becoming an accomplice I think he does enough to pass.

Final Verdict

I’ll leave that to you guys.

[tup] Mullens. I'd say the torture itself would probably be enough, but add in the abuse of his son, as well as forcing his victims to call loved ones...yeah, I'd say that's uniquely nasty. And it doesn't seem like the Alzheimer's is portrayed as making him sympathetic.

There's ONE more possible candidate, but he's from the most recent season. Eduardo Ramos: Hitman with a 50+ body count who forces his victims to drink bleach first; only issue is he's not the main unsub.

Fine I'll give him a slight yes if for the calling their loved ones thing and what he did to his son.

Though Im begging. Can we please not bring up this show for at least a bit. I think its driving people here nuts.

People can tell others are sick of discussing this show. Is the list going to implode without ONE more CM example? Is it something we are so BADLY needing?
