Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Alright, here's the effort post:

What's the work?:

Klonoa Heroes is set in an alternate universe from the main games. Klonoa, determined to become a true hero in this universe, finds a special flower flower called Hikari Sakura, which blooms only under certain circumstances and the person who possesses it will be granted good luck. Klonoa finds this flower with the intention of giving it to his friend, and possibly love interest, Lolo, an priestess in training.

However, his town is soon invaded by several small monsters, which are sighted on Bell Hill not long after Klonoa defeats the ones attacking the town. Klonoa to the hill to deal with the monsters, only to be surrounded by small, round creatures called, Moos. Fortunately, he is saved by a man on a motorcycle named, Guntz.

After giving the flower to Lolo, Klonoa and Guntz leave to pursue an bounty hunting career, only to run into an armadillo named Pango, who wants to cure his son, Boris, from the sleeping sickness. They all then learned of a plot being conceived by a madman named Garlen, who had joined forces with Joka, a villain from the first game, and a foul mouthed, maniacal villain named: Janga.

Who is Janga/What does he do?:

Janga is a foul mouthed antagonist who seeks to harvest nightmares for his own sinister purpose, employed Joka to do his dirty work, and join forces with Garlen to see that his plans come to fruition.

Years ago, Janga was once a hunter who worked with Guntz's father, Butz, to search for the darkness of Nahatomb. When Garlen orders Butz to resurrect Nahatomb, Butz refused, and thus Garlen orders Janga to kill him, which Janga gleefully does so without hesitation, taking Butz's gun immediately afterwards. Janga then decides to work with Garlen and Joka so he, as mentioned above, can harvest nightmares for his own sinister purpose.

In the present day, Janga makes his introduction in the ruins of the moon, sending the nightmares from the people he captured from the the ruins to the Lunar Base. Guntz soon recognizes Janga as his father's killer, having vowed to avenge his father's death. Janga then realizes that Guntz is Butz's son, Janga laughed at this, before fleeing from the ruins. Klonoa and Guntz would encounter Janga again later on in the ruins where Guntz tried to shoot Janga, but the foul mouthed cat dodged the bullets and managed to escape by using Klonoa as a shield, with an angry Guntz following suit.

Chasing Janga all the way to the Ruins of the moon, Guntz attempts to kill Janga for his father's death. But Janga is ultimately too quick for Guntz to catch him, and jested at Guntz, calling his revenge, petty, before proceeding to laugh at the fact that Guntz only has a bronze hero medal, declaring it makes him third-rate. He then states that Butz's hero medal was gold before showing a "keepsake" of his own from Butz to mock Guntz. Taking a cheap shot from a furious Guntz, Janga flees deep into Volk City.

Janga was eventually cornered by Guntz in the deepest corners of the underground factory, but Janga was able to knock Guntz down. Afterwards, Janga stated that he wouldn't kill Guntz with his poison claws..... before proceeding to shoot Guntz with Butz's gun. Janga then flees completely unaware that Guntz survived the gunfire.

On the moon world, Klonoa, Guntz, and Pango confront Janga once more, where Janga reveals that Butz was the one who found the method of the Darkness of Nahatomb, and when Butz refused to use it, Janga resorted to killing him. Janga then proceeds to fight the heroes, but is ultimately defeated. Guntz prepares to kill Janga, but Janga begs Guntz for mercy, claiming that he's sorry, stating he was only following orders and that he should be forgiven, stating that Butz wouldn't be happy if Guntz kills him in revenge, before claiming that he was going to betray Garlen anyways and thus his crimes should be overlooked. After considering for a bit, Guntz decides to spare Janga, telling him to leave and never appear before him again, before shooting his hat off as a warning. Janga then flees for his life......

Or so it seems, as Janga then lunges at Guntz out of nowhere to strike him with his poison claws as a sneak attack, but Klonoa intervenes and takes the hit instead, thus poisoning him. Enraged by this, Guntz fires several shots at Janga, wounding him. Janga, showing no regret for what he had done, mockingly told Guntz that Klonoa was going to die and go to the other world due to his poison. As he was stepping away however, Janga accidentally stumbled into a large pit, and falls to his death, avenging Butz's death at last.

Migrating factors/Freudian Excuse: Absolutely NOTHING! He has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, never shows remorse for his crimes, fakes an apology to save his own skin, and while seeming charming, he is nothing more than monsterous foul mouthed individual.

Heinous Factor:

Lets see here, is willingly to betray and kill his own comrade for his own desire, outright admits he plan to betray Garlen as well, captures people to extract their nightmares, harvest said nightmares for his own sinister purpose, attempts to Guntz immediately after Janga manages to get him to spare him with an false apology, and to top it all of, he uses a KID as a human shield, and poisons same kid later on while showing no regret for what he done, and proceeding to mock him and Guntz about it, yeah, Janga's pretty heinous.

Conclusion:

With all of that, I say he keeps. What are your thoughts, guys?

Janga... hmm. Sounds tough. A lot of his villainy sounds pretty bog-standard "trying to kill the heroes" business but he also sounds remarkably scummy about it, if nothing else...

He might just cross the baseline for a kid's game, if I'm being honest.

Lets not forget about him harvesting the nightmares for his own purpose, his sadism, and the fact he is willing to let innocents die, and attempting to outright kill a child, just to get what he wants. I believe that he counts, especially when compared to Ghadius and the King of Sorrow.

@145933 Yes, they've been upvoted, Caine in the last couple months. On the Tragic Villain page, the Complete Monster is cited as a contrast to the Tragic Villain.

Offhand, we have at least one CM who thinks he's a Tragic Villain; Roman Bridger is the first that comes to mind for me.

Anymore opinions for my quotes for Commodus?

Oh, I forgot to mention that Janga, along with Garlen and Joka, is responsible for the monsters that attack the town, which could've resulted the deaths of countless innocent people, which I believe helps Janga's case.

Oh, and one more thing I should've mentioned in the EP, had Janga succeeded in awakening Nahatomb, it would've resulted in not only the deaths of countless innocents but the end of the world as well. Of course, Janga doesn't care, as he would have many nightmares to harvest.

A lot of that sounds depending on inferral and fridge horror ("if" and "could" aren't ringing endorsements unless the game is making no bones about the fact a lot of innocents could die, and I have reason to be skeptical about that given it's still a kid's game). If you wanted to sell on those points, you'd put more emphasis on them in the EP. What sells me more is the personal awfulness of his murders and his betrayal and how he seems to be written... that kind of gives him the edge of cruelty he'd need to keep in a game like this.

All in all, I see no reason why he wouldn't count. Saying yes.

Ah screw it. I'll do it now.

So what's the work?

Angelmaker tells the story of Joe Spork spends his days fixing antique clocks. The son of infamous London criminal Mathew “Tommy Gun” Spork, he has turned his back on his family’s mobster history and aims to live a quiet life. That orderly existence is suddenly upended when Joe activates a particularly unusual clockwork mechanism. His client, Edie Banister, is more than the kindly old lady she appears to be—she’s a retired international secret agent. And the device? It’s a 1950s doomsday machine. Having triggered it, Joe now faces the wrath of both the British government and a diabolical South Asian dictator who is also Edie’s old arch-nemesis. On the upside, Joe’s got a girl: a bold receptionist named Polly whose smarts, savvy and sex appeal may be just what he needs. With Joe’s once-quiet world suddenly overrun by mad monks, psychopathic serial killers, scientific geniuses and threats to the future of conscious life in the universe, he realizes that the only way to survive is to muster the courage to fight, help Edie complete a mission she abandoned years ago and pick up his father’s old gun

so whoose the villain and what has he done?

Shem Shem Tsiem aka thw Opium Khan is Edie Bannister's Life long Arch-Enemy and the Big Bad of the book (The Asian dictator).

Shem was born a prince in the fictional country of Addeh Sikkim in 1929. As HE grew up, he become a claberity abroad. His eloquence and wit made him highly popular and he would wine and dine others. Still Shem undernwath was a monster. He lived to inflcit pain and hurt others. So set about to make it true, he had his father and brothers poisioned. With a special drug, he formatted which mimmicks the viel of death. Hence when they were being cremated, he burnt them alive. His 12 year old nephew than took the throne. Shem was put in charge as his regent until he could come off age. Instead Shem had him captured, and suffocated to death while making it look like an accident. Hence taking the throne.

As the ruler, Shem was a monster, he would threathen the population simply for fun. He began to use the country for opium and heroin production which he would than export worldwide to increase his profits. In 1939, he accured a scientist named Frankie and set ably his ultimate plan: To become a God. He set about for her to build him a machine (She thought he was using it to discover the truth of mankind). She eventually figured out the truth, Frankie and Shem's mother (Angry at him for murdering her family but still keeping her around in the castle.) set out word to the British government who needed a female spy as per request. So they gained one in in 18 yera old Edie Bannister who they recruited using an organisation of mechanists called the ruskinities

Disgusing herself as a male visting sergant, she makes her way to Shem's palace. There he greets her and shows her around. He shows her his desire to become God-like. He shows her an Arch-Bishop he captured and how he has had the man cruficed. He than tortured him for months untill the man broke and become nothing more than an animal barking. He says to her that this is how it is to achive divinity, to kill Simone (Stop there heart) and than brinf them back to life (Resusixate him) again and again which he does with the Bishop. Shem I his words, lives to make people suffer and gets off on it.

So Edie creeped out, eventually makes her way to Shem's mother (Dotty Catty) after Shem falls asleep. Dotty shows her Frankie and the three plan An escape as the device that Frankie intneds to build would be devastating. So well they escape, she provides a distraction and crashes Shem'a castle. So she and Shem fight, him and his tropes now going against the Ruskinite forces. Shem fully intneds to Alice her to pieces himself. Both for pissing him off and becuase sadism of making her death burt is what he lives for. Just as he's about to fisnsh her off, the crate which Dotty have her opens. It contains a baby elephant Clare in armour ( The crown held of Catty's stuff is her herd of battle elephanst) which charges him and forces him to flee.

Leaving his soldiers to burn, Shem before he leaves, takes his sword and runs it down the chest of the Bishop and hence killing him in the most painful way possible simply becuase. Shem to spite his mother and her live for elephants , created a poaching ring and lied show to the wordlide population. He than captured his mother and had her beloved ad favourite elephants massacred in front of her, before cutting out her toubge and devapting her head and putting it on a spike. Yeeshh....

Anyway he than begins an obessesion with beating Edie with the two dueling each otherconstantly over 10 years each barely ecaping with there lives. He'd casuse destruction, she'd clean it up, rinse and repeat. Now Edie had during this time fallen in love with and was in a relationship with Frankie. She discovered though that Frankie had a secret family and son and broke it off. Frankie had in this time continued with her research, effectively discovering a way to mould or influence a person's mind in a certain way. She'She'shoped to use it to allow peolle to see the truth beliving it to be neccesar for humans. Something went wrong and a small town ended up destroyed. It was than she realised what Shem planned. He was going to use this device to lobtomise the entire planet. Than upload his concious into everyone effectively becoming everything and turning them into mindless extensions of himself. His path to Godhood complete. Mass Mind Rape on a grand scale. Frankie destroyed her researchbut still beloved that some good could come. She had the two pieces of the machine (The book used to startamd make ot and the activation code) sent to her husband Daniel Spork and Frankie respectibk. The two people she loved the most.

So Edie eventually retired from the Ruskinites after the village incident. Shem than made his way into the rusknites (years later) under the alias of the kindly Brother Sheamus (Get it Shem Shem Tsiem). He convinced them to come to his side. He founded a mental hospital whereupon people where lobotimaed into his mindless minions or tortured and murdered. They than ran horrfic experiments including orphans where we'll lets hear it from the guy himself

. ''And when, in the fullness of my own life, I began to wane, I realised that I must submit to the last test of godhood. I must return from death myself. Only then would I be able to meet God as an equal. Only then could I become Him.”

Bastion growls in his bag. Polly Cradle watches Shem Shem Tsien as he moves past her, sword and pistol held lightly in his hands.

“She was right,” he murmurs, indicating Edie’s corpse. “You are so very like her. Not physically. But you have that same infuriating, utterly unmerited confidence in your ability to match me.” He moves on, going back to his story.

I caused myself to be recorded. Written down. Transcribed. I became, in the modern parlance, information. Do you see? I carved the pattern of my life into the world, in words and images. I measured the actual activity of my brain. And I stored it. I had a ready stock of test subjects in the orphans of the Wistithiel experiment. While I was still alive, I refined my apparatus by using it on them. I played them fragments of my life and taught them—with electric shocks and so on—to emulate me perfectly. Each of my Ruskinites is an aspect of my self …” He gestures, and the Ruskinites around him echo him, fluid motions indicating one another.

“Of course, I never allowed the whole to be shown to anyone. And to be honest with you, the Ruskinites are imperfect. They were neither entirely erased nor willing to learn. One had to employ crude, Pavlovian teaching methods. Pleasure and pain.

“Vaughn Parry was different.”

He considers Cecily and Bob Foalbury now, reaches out with the tip of the sword towards them.

“Vaughn was an empty corpse walking. He had nothing inside him at all. He was a natural miracle: a body pretending to be a living man. And in that corpse, a desperate hunger to be a real boy … he studied so hard. He learned and learned and practised and practised and eventually he knew it all. He moved like me. He felt what I feel. He was surgically altered to look like me.

“And then he sat, day upon day upon night upon night, wired to my machines, and matched the pattern of his living brain’s impulses to my own. Until, little by little, I returned. Do you not see the genius of it? No? You object, perhaps that there is a soul, a part distinct which I do not possess? But consider: if there is, that part fled when my body died, but my mind persists. In which case, I am the first man ever to possess not one soul, but two.”

Reborn under the alias of Vaughan Parry, he set about finding ghe elderly Edie and The grandson of Frankie (Joe Spork). To do this, He had Joe framed for a murder and sent to an insane asylum. Thee HE had him tortured over and over again in an attempt to break him. when this failed, he posed as a friendly inmate and another victim who had come to free him. Joe though figured that something was wrong and ditched him during the escape.

Joe flees to Edie Bannkstwrs's place. There Shem makes his reveal as that dude. He has Edie murdered for the sick satisifcation of killing his long term nemesis. Getting a kick out of imposing a 90 year old womam. She tells Hkm to flee with the book. They fight him but he's able to get it before they escape. It seems that it took years but Shem has near completed his machine. There'll be transmitted through robotic bees (To blend in) turning the world into mindless automatons.

So Joe regroups, there he used Grannies tech (Not to mind control anyone but to send a message of help). People listen and they help him lay a siege to Shem's base. There they find dozens of people in his pylons impaled and dead as part id some maxabe show. Joe and Shem duel and Joe defeats him before burni g and destroying everything here so that his plan is in ruins

Freudian Excuse ?

Nah. Shem is described. Many times as a man who live to hurt people. He takes joy in causing suffering with no FE in site. Just a God Complex

Other redeeming qualities?

Nope. He is decribed as a man without limits who would commit any atrocity. The author describes him as a man whol over to hurt others to satiate his appeties.

The book is humorous at times but everything Shem does is played straight and he is never played for laughs being a figure of horror.

Shem murdered his family in horrible ways simply simply on a whime for power.

Everything he does is to become a God and fuel his sadism. He's fully aware of the fact he's hurting people and gets off on it.

Okay so the brain uploading thing. I don't think it's notogatinh. Shem is dimly doing what his plan was from the start. In-Universe, the work treated him as the exact same guy just reborn. Same personilty, memories and even goals. The same evil man.

Heinous Standard?

East pass. Big Bad sets it. Waay over the baseline with his sadism, torture, infanticide, mass murder, Mind Rape. You name it.

The dude is The Agressive Drug Dealer, The Caligula, Rogue Agent, Diabolical Mastermind, Mad Doctor, Mad Scientist and Dark Messiah all in one.

Conclusion

Easy yes and a great villain.

I've got a quote from him. If hes approved

I seek to know God by becoming more like Him. Thus I have replicated the many paths of God as recorded in our many holy books. Fratricide? Yes. I have committed fratricide, patricide... I have slain generations. I have been merciful - terribly merciful. Capriciously so. My mercy has driven men insane. I have done things so dark, countenanced monstrosities so appalling, that my cruelty has inspired fear in nations great and powerful. Even your own.
I have drowned men in their thousands. I have extinguished species, decimated populations with disease. On that frame, I stopped milord bishop's heart. It ceased to beat - for our entire history on this Earth, Commander, the very measure of death. And I reached down and clawed him back. I returned him to his body.
Because I wished it. Because it was godly.
And never, Commander, never do I explain myself - save to you, so that you can be my prophet in the court of the English king. Do you see? God is indifferent and God is silent and God is alien. And thus I shall become. I shall rise through horror and disaster, and in doing so I shall be more and more like Him. I shall be His Mirror.
I shall have words with the Silent God, Commander. I alone, of all men, shall know God as an equal. And then, we shall see.

Ooh heres another quote from him. This guy has plenty

“Once upon a time,” Shem Shem Tsien begins. He is circling them, almost casual, a fastidious cannibal considering whom to eat next. “Once upon a time, not so very long ago, there was a boy born in the nation of Addeh Sikkim, in the royal palace, who wanted nothing more than to lead his people into a new world of prosperity and hope. He was suited to the task: clever and able and well-favoured.” The Opium Khan looks nostalgic.

“I locked him in a steel box and burned him alive. I used the ash to dye my mourning cloth, and I took his kingdom for my own. I needed it, you see, to understand divinity.”
