During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk
to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "
to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

There needs to at least be a plot beyond that.
Me and Lighty just ep'd two pedophilic rapists and torturers but the work actually has a plot so it's not just that.
This does not have that which doesn't fly here.

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Oh good! Another NoSleep story to read so I can validate it to the forum! :D
So before anyone starts getting butthurt about the term "NoSleep", I need to reiterate that some of them are indeed quite good, and well-written. One of them was even converted into a book you can buy off Amazon.
This is not one of those stories.
This is literally just a list of instructions about how to kidnap a child told from the kidnapper's POV. And then it ends. It's not even 1500 words long. That Professional Troll story was longer than this.
So
to the Villain Protagonist from How to successfully ransom a child.

I write stories and shiz. You can read them here.@Kylotrope: Miraculous nailed it on the dot earlier. He and Lighty just finished proposing two villains who were rapists and pedophiles from a duology of books that are tens of thousands of words long.
This story is under 1500 words and isn't doing anything but having the villain tell us that he kidnapped a child. And then he tormented the family. And then he killed the child. And then...nothing.
That is literally the entire story.
I write stories and shiz. You can read them here.Does anyone know Toruk?
- Iron Kingdoms: Toruk is the God-Emperor of the dragon race, although he considers his progeny the only thing that might pose a threat to him and desires to destroy them all. To accomplish this, he turns a whole set of island nations into a mix of undead and mutants to serve as his army, all with the intent of slaughtering as many of the inhabitants of the mainland as possible to make a bigger army.
Toruk's fine
- King Jakoven Tallven is a vicious tyrant who locks his brother Kellen in a hellish asylum, only not killing him because of a prophecy's warning. Jakoven proceeds to expand the Five Kingdoms, killing all in his path, while taking young boys as hostages and sex slaves for his own pleasure. Having the hero Ward tortured, Jakoven also sends Ward's love interest Tisala to be tortured and raped by his men, before intending on bleeding Ward to use a superweapon, which he and his right hand man Jade Eyes test on an innocent village, intending on wiping out all before him until he stands supreme.

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."
Agreed, just as there's a concept of baseline heinousness regardless of what we're dealing with, there's a baseline level of premise needed for a work, regardless of it being a video game, anime, book, internet story or song... gotta be enough to work with so I don't look at it and think, "Wow, this looks like it could just exist to showcase how evil someone is."
As said before I'll work ok the EU T1000 and Bendy in the following 2 weeks. Any way a Suprising but nonetheless interesting candidate
What's the work?
“Johnny English strikes again”. The 3rd installment of the Johnny English series. While I'm not too familiar with the film series besides this film, from what I can gather its a Parody of the British Spy film Genre. Similar to Austin Powers but...less overtly cartoonish or Surreal (Nonetheless heavy on slapstick). In this he had long retired and became a teacher(Though he still teaches the students spy skills in a way that's both heartwarming and hilarious) but is brought back after every non retired agent has there identities Outed by the cyber terrorists.. While Johnny tries to uncover whatever plot is going on, the British PM tries to find other ways to stop the attacks, including getting brilliant Silicon Valley billionaire Jason Volta.
Unmarked spoilers
Who is Jason Volta? And what does he do?
A Tech billionaire who is secretly responsible for several cyber-terrorist attacks across the world trying to make other countries desperate for safety, his plan was to then stop the attacks using his networks to make it look like his tech would keep them safe.
He pulls this trick on the PM and it works spectacularly earning the UK governments trust
Later English follows Jason's Girlfriend Ophelia to his mansion and records him causing a cyber attack on London to prove his guilt. He mocks English and his friends stupidity but English manages to escape, sadly he loses his phone accidentally grabbing the phone of the person he Car-Jacked to escape Volta. Thus losing the evidence.
Later he tries to kill Ophelia after finding out She was a spy, luckily he is stopped By english, while English fails to defeat him he nonetheless gives Ophelia a shot to escape.
Having gained the governments trust the PM makes a meeting with several world leaders to discuss secure program. He reveals his true nature when he threatens the world leaders by saying he will spread a virus that shut down the internet and electricity essentially causing a Global Blackout sending the world into chaos if they don't give him control.
To make sure they know he isn't bluffing he shuts down all the power in Europe justifying himself saying “Seeing is better then believing”
His plans are foiled when English accidentally orders a nuclear strike on his boat( It Makes Sense in Context ) That was transmitting the Signal. He tried to escape and when English confronts him he reveals he had a backup network he attempts to cause the before mentioned global blackout out of spite saying "And I'll be the last man standing". English defeats him by knocking him out with a tablet, then stabs his phone( Again It Makes Sense in Context ) stopping the network.
Heinous Factor?
I haven't seen the other 2 films but from what Miraculous told me the films have a fairly low Standard. As for baseline...
He causes a blackout around Europe as an EXAMPLE And sadly we don't see the Results but we DO get pretty Damn vivid descriptions of it, As he says it will result in hospitals shutting down planes falling out of the sky...even worse is that this comes from the man himself before doing it. And we see him push the button on screen.
And again He attempts to send the world into global chaos leading to everyone dying out of Spite.
Freudian Excuse or Mitigating factors?
This is surprisingly played pretty seriously, any comedy in his scenes are usually stuff happening around him(Like pointing out English’s stupidity. Or his somewhat comical defeat) rather than the man himself. He does tell some jokes (Like saying “British and intelligence” shouldn't be in the same sentence. Or him saying “Bye internet!” When trying to cause the global blackout) but that's just him Smugly mocking people rather than Actual Comedy.
He initially treats his Girlfriend Ophelia rather well even calling her sweetheart...but as listed above he tries to kill her. True she was a spy and was going to kill him, but he really doesn't seem to he broken up about the fact(Quite the opposite the reason he didn't do it was because he acted a little sadistic about it first. Shooting next to her head into the wall to get her to wince)
Final Verdict?
I'll give a fairly confidant Yes. While he is a take on the spy film tech villain archetype, It's never taken to parodic extremes and he's played seriously enough for me. Also I recommend the film itself, in my opinion the critics are crazy.
Things are really about to get Fun around hereI haven't heard of Shang Chi, any thing note worthy on it?
Also if it means any thing, there's this on the main page for The film.
Vile Villain, Saccharine Show: Jason Volta comes very close to industrially crippling much of the world.

Things are really about to get Fun around here

So, uh. I have a r/nosleep story that I've heard a long time ago that I want to discuss at least once.
Setting
https://www.reddit.com/r/nosleep/comments/70b3tv/how_to_successfully_ransom_a_child/
How to Sucessfully ransom a child is a story from the POV a serial kidnapper of children giving tips to other kidnappers to sucessfully ransom children from their families.
Who is the Narrator
Surprise. The Villain Protagonist is the candidate.
Well, he does give the tips. Explaining his methods, nothing too graphic per se. His sadism is more of the emotional type, choosing close and happy families. He describes how he kidnapped a little girl, detail to detail. No gore or anything, just a chillingly casual description.
He also explains how to get the trust of his victim. And also extorsionating the family by using emotional means.
But there is the twist.
He killed the girl in the first day, he had being playing with the family all along.
When the family went to the indicated site to get their daughter with the money, then the narrator would go their house and truly "collect the ramson"
He would go and delete every single thing of worth while ensuring deleting every trace of the kidnapped children, all to enjoy the satisfaction of completely destroying a family.
He was doing it for a while, and he isn't going to stop. He is out there, enjoying what he had done while thinking in the hair of his last victim.
Heinous Standart?
A Child Killer that enjoys emotionally torturing their families before leaving them in misery. Easy, easy pass.
Also, while not Outright Said, the wording at his explanation "used her" and the fact that he smell the hair of his test victim, a girl named Sophie strongly suggest that the narrator is a pedophile
Redeeming traits?
Nah, he only share the tips to get more people to do it "right". He's moved by emotional sadism and sometimes, money.
Too disgusting story, or too short
Is a one-shot, but the guy had a personality and a clear detailed method. One that don't involves blood or gore, but rather just sheer Adult Fear.
The latter is why I am EP-ing him. Dude isn't a cannibal describing every single detail of his victims tastes or anything like that, is a Emotional Sadist whose descriptions are relatively SFW compared to regular internet-horror standards.
He is so damn...mundane. His weapon is sheer Adult Fear
Verdict
I say Yes. I know the reputation of r/nosleep here.
But this guy...I really do hate him. He legit scare me and...again, there nothing too explicit there. Typical Creepypasta edge and leaps from realism for the sake of the history? OF COURSE. But actively disgusting stuff?
Dunno
