Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Trafficker duo and Good Ol' Lucifer

So a few months ago, I went to a horror-themed work party that one of my managers was having at her house. There, she was playing random B-horror movies (as she’s a fan of those). While one of those movies was Fender Bender (ugh), there was one movie that caught my interest due to how weird and crazy it was. After months of research (and by that I mean suddenly finding it on IMDB), I finally found the title of that movie.

What Is the Work?

Raw Force (also called Kung Fu Cannibals) is a 1982 trashy action movie.

Martial arts, cannibal monks, explosions, samurai zombies, and a Mad Scientist who looks like Hitler. Nuff said.

Who Is he?

German scientist/businessman Thomas Speer, who took Hitler’s mustache, is one of the main villains of the movie.

What has he done?

A kidnapper of women, Thomas sells his women to Warrior’s Island, an island of cannibal monks, as food in return for highly profitable Jade minerals. The monks need female flesh because it gives them the power to raise the dead, a fact that Thomas is okay with, just as long as he gets paid. During one trade, one of Thomas’ women proves to be too skinny for the monks’ liking, so they down his payment by 25%. Pissed, Thomas orders his assistant Cooper to kill them, but Cooper refuses. Thomas takes his payment, but leaves the woman behind, claiming that they don’t have enough room on their plane. The woman is left behind and killed by a zombie samurai.

Later shown staging a kidnapping on a cathouse, he poses as a police officer, he has his men storm the abandoned building. Thomas is also trying to prevent people from going to Warrior’s Island because of the Jade located there. When he has knowledge of a cruise ship heading near the Island, he has Cooper try and kidnap the captain of the ship, but when that fails, he has him burn the ship and kill everyone on board. The group manage to kill plenty of people, but there are still some survivors. The survivors make it to Warrior’s Island via raft, but encounter Thomas and his men in a graveyard, who tries to kill them with a bazooka, though he and Cooper make an escape when his men are killed.

After the survivors meet up with the monks and attack a whole bunch of zombies (I just now realized how stupid that sentence was), they’re able to escape them and find Thomas’ ship the next morning. Thomas, was hiding in the Jade mines taking everything from them, sees them and holds them up, but gets knocked out by a couple of zombies. After the gang fight more samurai and ninja zombies, one of the survivors (Mike), sees Thomas leave everyone behind and attempt to escape in his plane with the stolen Jade. Mike follows Thomas inside his plane, where he whacks Mike on the head with a piece of Jade. Thomas jumps out of the plane while it’s still on water as an escape, only to get eaten by piranhas.

Redeeming Qualities?

At one point, he praises Cooper for destroying most of the ship, and gives him a 15% raise. But when he sees the survivors, he immediately retracts his praise and raise.

Heinousness?

While he lives in a world of cannibals, Thomas manages to stand out from the evil monks with the scale of his acts. A greedy human kidnapper, trader, and someone who doesn't care that the dead are being resurrected just as long as he earns his share of the profit.

Conclusion

I think he’s a keep.

Also fun fact: This is actor Ralph Lombardi’s only film credit.

You know interestingly enough Scraggle and 43110 made a good and correct point on Human Trafficker 's being the easiest mundane way to get listed.

IDMB has this list of films where its the main subject. I would not be suprised if these have candiqates :

[tup] to Rao, Speer, and Lucifer.

Alright here Emilio and Deon's write-up:

  • Hawaii Five-0: Emilio and Deon, Season 7 episodes' "Puka 'ana" and season finale "Ua Mau Ke Ea O Ka Aina I Ka Pono", run a human trafficking ring on Oahu where they kidnapped numerous young girls, some being as young as seven, and force them to become Sex Slaves having their client brutalize and rape them; some of these girls even get shipped to the mainland. When Emilio gets captured and sells out his partner Deon for a reduced prison sentence Deon takes the rest of his slaves to a truck hoping to drive out the police chasing him, uncaring about the people he'll run over or if the girls might die.

Here's a new EP coming now:

What's the work?

Scream! was a British comic anthology that was based around, guess what? Horror stories. For those who don't know how British comics tend to work and worked then...anthologies would have a few short stories, but also ongoing series. Every week/month you'd see a piece of the story, and it would then be continued into the next as a serialized story. One of the flagship titles was The Dracula File, which will see a proposal from me later on. However, one short story, surprisingly had a pretty solid contender. The story is called 'Spiders Can't Scream'...featuring a kind olf professor leading an expedition into South America in pursuit of discovering a long lost civilization that once worshiped spiders...however, some of his partners, namely Mr. Cordwell...have more than science on their minds.

Who is Cordwell?

A thuggish mercenary ostensibly hired to assist with the expedition, Cordwell is only interested in the treasure to be had....when they discover the ruins, the professor is joyful, only for Cordwell to take the chance to seize him and shove his head into a spider web, so he's bitten by the web's venomus inhabitant, the region inhabited by very, VERY deadly spiders. With the professor dead, Cordwell seizes control of the expedition. Gleefully, Cordwell discovers the people there, who once worshiped a great spider god...

Cordwell decides the best solution is to massacre the natives, gunning down whole hosts of them with a sadistic grin on his face with his fellow mercenaries. Not satisfied here, Cordwell signals his men to start gathering up the treasure. Once it's piled up, Cordwell reveals he had zero intention of sharing with them and guns down all his men as well. He then decides to force the surviving natives into slavery, declaring they'll 'coolie' for him and help him take his loot back to civilization...he then notices a locked door. The natives beg him NOT to go in there, but Cordwell shoots it open and slips inside...only to fall into a big net...well, it looks like a net...soon he realizes it's a web....and in the center is a gigantic spider. The spider rushes at him...

And then Cordwell wakes up, dizzy and unclear what happened...with an old man watching him. The man explains the curse of the Spider God: greedy men who come questing for the treasure are given the curse of the spider god...that old man was the spider god for centuries, waiting for someone to find him, whereupon he bit Cordwell to take his place. Now it's Cordwell's turn to stay there in the dark as a spider...until someone else comes. Oh, and by the by, it could take centuries.

It ends with Cordwell wishing to scream, but...spiders can't scream...

Mitigatin qualities?

For a like ten page story, good GOD, the guy blows past the standard. Murdering the professor? Basic. Massacring a tribe of peaceful natives and then slaughtering his men (there are at least 8 of them) and then trying to press gang survivors into slavery? Credit where it's due here.

No redeeming qualities. Cordwell is just a greedy thuggish prick who wants to make it big. Murdering tons of people is nothing to him. He acquits himself very well for such a quick story.

Conclusion?

I'd say an easy keeper.

[up]All set.

I considered doing an EP on Nikolai Wolf from Jennifer's Body too, but probably not this weekend. I'm still rewatching the movie right now, but anybody else is free to take it instead though. Also I think whether or not Nicholas Kudrow from Mercury Rising counts, he needs a way better EP than the one he got. Anybody else can do that one too. I don't feel like doing it myself.

So, I'm almost done de-potholing the Stephen King entries (just got Rennie left; still wondering if it needs to be so long), but I found this about Fisherman at Beethoven Was an Alien Spy:

So wouldn't Munshun be the candidate instead of Burnside?

Also, for the header, I'm thinking of changing it slightly to the following:

Stephen King has written some pretty nasty villains, but these particularly stand out. It is not uncommon for the actual monsters of his Shared Universe to pale in comparison to the more human villains.

Here's Rennie's current entry. Besides the length, it's not written so well either:

  • Under the Dome: At best, Selectman James P. "Big Jim" Rennie is a cold-blooded, amoral, greedy, psychopathic bastard. Soon after the start of the novel, we learn that the man is the ringmaster of a massive drug ring, apparently one of the biggest suppliers of meth in the whole country. Then it gets worse. Not only do we learn that he killed his own wife by smothering her with a pillow (a woman already dying of cancer, no less), but over the course of the novel, to ensure that he remains absolute master of the town, he covers up the various murders and rapes committed by his son, Junior, and the gang of thugs he's commissioned as a police force. He kills three or four people (including a pastor, smashing his head in with a gold-covered baseball) who threatened to reveal to his subjects what kind of a monster he is, purposefully causes a riot over supplies just so he can claim need for greater control, and frames the main protagonist, Dale Barbara, for everything that he and his gang has gotten away with. Then, because he had his gang steal huge amounts of propane (the only fuel source in town) just so he could make more meth, he sets the stage for the massive explosion that consumes almost everything in the town, turning the atmosphere into little more than an assortment of poisonous gases, and then gets away with it, hiding away in a fallout shelter. Even worse, he refuses to accept fault for anything that either he did or happened because of his decisions, even so far as to excuse his multiple murders as "sending them into the arms of Jesus," his faith allowing him to dismiss any of the multiple atrocities he does.
