Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Micah.

[tup] Caine. Besides that other Sebastian (Shaw), Kevin Bacon also played this CM who probably needs a trimming:

  • The River Wild: Wade is a psychotic criminal who will stop at nothing to get across the river with money he had robbed from a cattle auction. As he is trying, along with his partners, Terry and Frank, to make it across with the stolen money, Frank proves useless in guiding them due to his wounds from the robbery, so Wade forces a reluctant Terry to kill him. With no guide, Wade asks Gail Hartman to help them get across. When Gail finally becomes suspicious of Wade, she and her family try to leave them behind. However, Wade catches them and beats her husband Tom, attempts to kill their dog, and slaps her son Roarke for telling them he had a gun. He then uses her family to blackmail Gail into taking them across the Gauntlet—ignoring her pleas and warnings that such a trip could get them killed. When Tom escapes, Wade tries to kill him, but not before taunting him about how many seconds he has left to live. After a park ranger, who is also a close friend of Gail's, catches them and refuses to let them ride the Gauntlet for their safety, Wade kills him and jokes about it afterwards. After Gail gets them across the Gauntlet, Wade and Terry get caught in their trap and Gail turns their gun on them. Wade begs for his life, so Gail decides to shoot the last bullet in the air out of mercy. However the gun doesn't shoot, so Wade orders Terry to kill her family while he tries to kill her, despite Gail sparing his life.

[tup] Sardo.

DDD: It is? Huh. Well, let me fix that then.

I've added this to the batch:

  • C-12: Final Resistance: Major Dan Carter is a high-ranking official within the alien army. A former soldier aiding the resistance, Dan defected and joined the aliens once he realized humanity was losing the fight, and willingly allowed himself to be turned into a cyborg. As a cyborg, Dan helped the aliens kill members of the resistance and kidnap humans so they could be converted into cyborg soldiers for the aliens' armies. After the resistance starts to heavily sabotage the aliens' plans, Dan kidnaps his own wife, Dr. Carter, in hopes of having her turned into a cyborg, and also in an attempt to incapacitate the resistance's morale. When Dan discovers that the aliens plan on poisoning Earth's atmosphere in order to wipe out all life on the planet, Dan is more than happy leaving humanity to die all so he can save himself.

Alright, here's the belated writeup on the candidates that I proposed:

  • OPUS by Satoshi Kon: The Masque is the main villain of Chikara Nagai's manga, Resonance, who leads a cult known as "The Nameless Faith" that release people from their individuality shell. Prior becoming the Masque, he was a Serial Killer who kills around 6 children and stripping them naked after he had done with them with a motivation of being envious of their good looks and also had a pleasure on killing them. After becoming the Masque, he then brainwashes several people including the police chief who is the acquaintance of the protagonist of the Resonance, Satoko. When Chikara travels through his own manga in order to retrieve the prototype that was stolen, the Masque then changes the authorship of the manga without Chikara's permission and tries to erase the world of the manga entirely to avoid his fate while mocking Chikara that he can't save his own manga and sends the brainwashed Chief to kill Satoko. After Chikara and his companion travels through the past volume and when the past version of the Masque accidentally founds out about the manga based on him, the past Masque then kills a fatally wounded police officer, Sawamura, which changed the outcome of the ending. Although claiming to be well-intentioned in his goals, it was revealed that the Masque is only obsessed with complete control towards other people and ultimately strives to become a god in order to remake the world in his own image.
  • The Golden Child: Sardo Numspa is a mysterious sorcerer who tries to abduct the boy with mystic powers known as the Golden Child with the intention of murdering him so that he could unleash the hordes of demons from hell that would invade the Earth. To this end, he and his men went into the Tibetan Monastery and slaughter several monks while Numspa wastes no time to kidnap said child. It was revealed that he orders his men to kill some children so that he could harm the Golden Child. When a social worker, Chandler Jarrell, interfere with Numspa's plan, Numspa then negotiates with Chandler to gave him an artifact known as Ajanti Dagger and when Chandler refuses, Numspa then leaves a burning mark as a warning and then lets his men torture Chandler when trying to save a young lady, Kee Nang, in his dream. After Chandler obtains the dagger, Numspa tries to have Chandler arrested and when Chandler manages escape from his clutches, Numspa sends his men to attack Chandler and kills Kee Nang after the latter tries to protect Chandler from harm.
  • Shining Resonance:
    • Georg Zalbard, the captain of Beowulf, the group of knights who pleaded their loyalty towards the Sanguine Church of Lombardia, initially seems to be the loyal knight that serves the princess of Lombardia, Excella Noa Aura. However, he has a hidden agenda of his own. To this end, he sends the dark elf, Beatrice, to spy on Excella's moves and in the last chapters of the game, he drops his facade and betray Excella by killing her father and incriminates her as a traitor of the empire. In addition, he also conspires with the top scientist of Beowulf, Joachim Reubens, in order to revive the god that the Sanguine Church worships known as Deus and when Georg and Joachim arguing about Georg's lieutenant, Zest Graham, being the true inheritor of Deus, Georg then kills Joachim in cold blood after being called a heretic by the latter. After this, Georg then drains the hero, Yuma Ilvern's, power of the Shining Dragon with a sword known as Gjallahorn which renders Yuma unconscious. After Deus is revived, Georg tries to fuse himself with Deus and was revealed that he had the intention to cause the apocalypse to happen so that he can purge all of the heretics and the weak and leaving behind the people who are judged worthy just like him.
    • The aforementioned Joachim Reubens is the top scientist of Beowulf who has a penchant on performing unethical experiments towards other people including the hero, Yuma Ilvern, while having an ecstasy to hear their screams after torturing them. It was revealed that in the past, he conducts an experiment on the Le Shiella twins, Marion and Ette, to the point that the latter got killed by said experiment. After Ette's spirit inhabits Marion's body, Joachim wastes no time to condcut horrible experiments on Marion so that he could turn her as a personal tyke bomb by forcefully implanting an occult eye on her which causes her physical pain and brainwashing her by replacing her current personality into Ette. In the last chapters of the game, he and Georg also betrays Excella in order to revive the Evil God Deus and after finding out that Zest is the suitable inheritor of Deus, Joachim betrays Georg and calls him a heretic. In his last moments, Joachim coldly mocks Georg that he still needs him in order to revive Deus.

I'll send this to the drafts. You can correct the flow @ACW.

Depotholing Renoir, Tomie and Menar.

  • The Witches Hammer: Madeline Renoir is a vampiric wizard out to summon the Souls of the Damned to bring Hell on Earth. Killing and turning a researcher's wife to introduce him to the supernatural, she enlists him to help her find the Malleus Maleficarium, which can summon the Souls to Earth. After finding the book, she has the British monster hunting organization massacred, leaving only Rebecca, who she intends to use as a sacrifice for the ritual, as the Sole Survivor. As our heroes take the book to Madeline, she sends a bunch of vampire assassins to kill them and take the book, causing much collateral damage along the way. After her ritual is thwarted, Madeline declares that she'll just use the magic of the book to wreak mass destruction on Earth.
  • Tomie: Tomie is a Humanoid Abomination who enjoys toying with men to get what she wants. She gets them so devoted to her that they'll commit murder and suicide for her, and then drives them to murder her, after which she always regenerates, usually with multiple bodies in one Hive Mind. At one point, a bunch of Tomie chunks grew into more Tomies at the bottom of a lake, where they proceeded to lure many men to jump and drown one young boy, to say nothing of the child she drives insane in the "Boy" chapter. In another chapter, she turns an old couple who took her in against each other, leading to the wife being Driven to Suicide and the husband killing Tomie and the maid, all so she could get their money.
  • Typhon: Menar is a Mad Scientist and career criminal. After inventing the Tidal Annihilator, a machine that can generate destructive tidal waves, Menar moves to a lair under the sea, forcing his daughter to come with him. He then proceeds to destroy multiple ships, killing everybody aboard and stealing the cargo. After wiping one boat out for a $100,000,000 shipment of gold, Typhon and his lieutenant go to investigate. After Menar captures our heroes, he leaves them in a Death Trap to suffocate.

Alright, the next Red Dead post! In chapter 6, one major conflict occurs about the Wapiti Indian reservation...and the man behind it?

Who is Colonel Favours?

Henry Favours is an elderly colonel who had a career in the Civil War...unfortunately for Favours, he gained a bit of a (deserved) reputation as an incompetent coward, which has followed him ever since. s a result, he's kind of been shunted around ever since to places nobody really has much use for, recently at Fort Wallace in the Ambarino region to oversee the Wapiti Lakota tribe as the liaison to their reservation....America, however, is not what it used to be. The Indian Wars have wound down, the Lakota are pacified....so Favours' ultimate gambit? He wants to be a hero, to earn the glory and honor he feels has been denied to him...best way to do that? A war....and if the Wapiti won't fight one...well, better make 'em.

Favours proceeds to do everything he can to antagonize the Wapiti. Deliberately derailing the humanitarian efforts of the much nicer Colonel Monroe, Favours begins to confiscate the Wapiti horses so they can't hunt, dooming them to starvation. He then goes against the treaty and withholds vital medicines and vaccines, killing their children, old and sick, and using his men to harass the Wapiti to drive them from their own land which is ostensibly oil-rich (a big golden feather in his cap if he gets that)...Favours proceeds to have the Wapiti sacred lands raided, even setting fire to their shrines just to piss them off. Their chieftains, Rains Fall is barely keeping the peace while his son Eagle Flies is just sick of this shit and (rightfully) believes the military won't ever keep its promises...it's a powder keg and Favours keeps trying to throw a match upon it....oh, ad if that wasn't enough? He's stealing women and kids to be sent to 'reform schools', stolen from their tribe and people.

Favours finally agrees to meet Rains Fall for peace...only to have a gun fight break out anyways, killing multiple people and provoking the war. The van der Linde gang gets involved as well, as Favours? Decides to deal with the humanitarian Monroe rather horribly: hang him for treason by framing him for 'stealing' the Wapiti Tribe's vaccines, all to get Monroe out of Favours' hair...with the war looming, Arthur Morgan and the gang break into Favours' command, gunning down his men before Favours arrives to gun down Eagle Flies himself...seconds later, though, Arthur manages to draw his gun and shoot Favours dead, a casualty of the war he so craved.

Heinous Standard?

We all know how dark the world of Red Dead is, but Favours is one of the worst. He's a racist scumbag screwing over the Wapiti Tribe, having them assaulted, murdering, condemning them to starvation and sickness to kick off a war to kill them and his own soldiers...all so Favours can find the glory. The only guy to compare him to is the tyrannical Colonel Allende of Mexico, and his actions are done to oppress a populace in Red Dead 1 to keep himself in power. Favours is handily as bad, and his actions are unique enough. Pass.

Mitigating Qualities?

None. 'High-Tail Favours' got his rep from screwing up during the war between the States and has chafed under it ever since. And all he is? Is a petty, racist asshole willing to exterminate a tribe so he can walk home with glory he feels should be his. Favours is driven by spite, ego and greed, as well as an undeserved hero complex. Nothing likable about him, not remotely. Pass.

'Conclusion?

An easy, easy yes

I say yes to Favours, who is a pretty good embodiment of the banality of evil as opposed to someone viscerally evil like Micah. Favours will sit back and murder children by withholding their vaccines, try to execute good men like Captain Monroe for treason (or being "facetious" as Favours defines it), and commit genocide against a group of people all to get glory he doesn't deserve before he retires.
