Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Yes to Mengele, unsurprisingly.

I don't think there actually ARE too many CM incarnations of him. There's this one, and the one from Über may be on his way.

Here's my write up for Flamingo:

  • Eduardo Flamingo is a sadistic hitman, infamous for being a cannibal who eats his victims. He stands out among his fellow assassins as he performs atrocities solely For the Evulz, viewing murder as an art-form. In fact he got kicked out of the organization as even they couldn't tolerate how awful he was. His Establishing Character Moment has him cutting off and eating a man's ear. In Season 2, he gets hired by The Lady to kill Jim Gordon. After single-handedly massacring two police units sent in as backup, he confronts and brawls Gordon himself, who narrowly manages to subdue him and holds him at gunpoint. Flamingo taunts Gordon and dares him to shoot, to which Gordon is very nearly tempted but restrains himself at the last second. Gordon would pay for him mercy, as just as Flamingo is about to get taken to lockup, he attacks and kills fellow police officer Katherine Parks by biting her neck.

Speaking of which, Gotham's CM section is getting a bit crowded. Maybe it could do with a subpage?

He is known to be physically abusive towards Shera, while seeing her as nothing but a Sex Slave that he rightfully owns and can use to continue their bloodline. Eventually, Shera had enough of his mistreatment and ran away, leading to him obsessively trying to recapture her and bring her back. He has a complete disregard for life, not caring how many people he endangers to achieve his goals and believes the entire world exists to please him. This is shown when he callously declares war over the pettiest of reasons, or when he summons the Force Hydra (a dangerous and destructive beast) even though he had no means of controlling it. He's also shown to be incredibly racist to all races other than the Elves. Taking an obsessive liking to Mandy Bloom, he has the Black Skulls kidnap her and her husband Red Miller, sacrificing one of his men to them as thanks. After tormenting Balthazar throughout the ages, Redgrave discovers a psychic girl in the modern day whose blood makes vampires relive their most ecstatic memories and plans to constantly drain her blood to create an army of euphorically inebriated vampires for himself. Sending hundreds of vampires to attack her town, Redgrave Mind Rapes Balthazar with visions of his past pain when he tries to stop him.
  • An Artificial Night: Blind Michael, the leader of The Wild Hunt, has his followers kidnap children and painfully transform them into his thralls. • Contra franchise:
    • Shattered Soldier: Earth's ruling Triumvirate is indirectly responsible for the alien invasions of the first games in the series. They sent an army to recover the Relic of Moirai from Jupiter; the invading aliens were actually a defensive army. The Triumvirate, uncaring, claims the aliens are invaders, thus prolonging the war and resulting in countless deaths. When Lance Bean found out the truth, they supposedly killed him, and also used a satellite to wipe out 80% of Earth's population, blaming all this on Bill Rizer, who is later released to take on a terrorist group. The Triumvirate ultimately plans to examine the Relic and become like gods.
    • Neo Contra: Master Contra is the leader of the terrorist group Neo Contra, which poses such a threat to the now-prison planet Earth in 4444 that Bill Rizer is revived from cryogenic storage. Master Contra—as well as the Player Character himself—are both clones of the original Bill Rizer, seen in the game as "Mystery G", and later killed by Master Contra. Master Contra plans to end all wars—by blowing up Earth, which he succeeds in doing in a Bad Ending. Despite all his talk and claims how he is "the ultimate form of Bill Rizer", in the end, he is, as the player character says, "just a heap of metal with an inflated ego".
  • Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia:
    • Bourd Rade is the second-in-command of the Tenba Organization, which is notorious for its shady practices. Rade has a penchant to use innocent people for his army, and lets them abuse the Reyvateils they captured. Seeking to dissolve all of the organizations to get what he wants, he worked with Bishop Falss to awaken Mir. To do that, he first stole the song, Chronicle Key, from the Star Singer Misha, to prevent her from performing her ritual which would keep Mir's seal intact. One day, Bourd ended up meeting with Lyner and tries to forcefully recruit him. After chasing him and Misha in an airship, Bourd takes another Reyvateil named Aurica as a hostage and threatened to throw her off until Misha returns to his side, and when she does, Bourd throws Aurica anyway. When Lyner and his group tries to stop Mir, Bourd tries to stop them from heading to their destination, only to end up seemingly killed by Misha. After entering Bourd's secret lab, Bourd then explained the heroes that he wanted to create an army of lifeless Reyvateils under his command. Escaping from them, he is encountered one last time trying to prevent the newly regained Chronicle Key from being sung.
    • The aforementioned Bishop Falss is the seemingly kind and friendly leader of the Church of Elemia, but as his name suggests, he is wearing a false facade to hide his true colors. Once from Platina, Bishop Falss's true identity is Kyle Clancy, one of the leaders of Platina who became obsessed with power. Believing he could use the Mother Virus Mir to bring forth prosperity and glory, he tried to awaken her only to get caught and be banish by his fellow leaders Shurelia and Leard. This doesn't stop him and tried it again only to get caught, but instead of facing his crimes, Kyle threw himself off Platina and landed on the lower world where he changed his name to Falss. After gaining leadership of the Church of Elemia due to his advance knowledge from Platina, he began manipulating everyone to bring forth Mir's awakening through his deal with Bourd to twisting the Church to declaring war against Platina to get revenge on them and eliminating anyone who might stand against him. Having returned to Platina during the war, Falss manage to awaken Mir and tried to gain her power.
  • Ninja Gaiden franchise:
    • Ninja Gaiden 3 (Team Ninja): Clifford "Cliff" Higgins at first seems like a helpful scientist working for the Japanese Defense Force. However, Cliff is really working for the Lords of Alchemy, a group that wants to destroy the human race and replace it with new "perfect" god-like beings; he is also the grandson of the head of the LOA. When Cliff's brother Theodore opposed Cliff's plans, Cliff had him killed in an accident. Cliff later decides to bring his brother back to life, brainwashes him and turns him into a terrorist. While under Cliff's control, Theodore launches a terrorist attack on London and murders the British Prime Minister. Cliff's plans come to a head when he uses his technology and Ryu Hayabusa's Dragon Sword, to turn Canna, his own niece, into an Eldritch Abomination called the Goddess. The Goddess then proceeds to go on a rampage across Tokyo, and will eventually destroy the entire human race. Later, after a fight with Ryu and a fatal injury at the hands of his brother, Cliff admits he did all this because he was jealous of his brother and wanted to step out from under his shadow, any way he could.
    • Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z: Alarico del Gonzo is the holographic head of Forge Industries, and the one responsible for the zombie outbreak. Discovering an underground space lobster, he decided to harvest the chemical Substance 72 from it in order to cure his disease and become a God-like figure, unleashing the chemical onto Soviet soil once he hears of Ryu Hayabusa coming to stop him. Doing so causes everyone in Russia to become a zombie, with del Gonzo using them to distract Ryu. Resurrecting Yaiba Kamikaze as a cyborg, he has him hunt down Ryu so that he can activate Yaiba's killswitch to detonate the two ninjas, killing some of his men in a fit of rage once that fails.
  • Pluto, born Lazaros, is the leader of the Children of Heaven and The Dragon to archangel Uriel. A vicious, depraved sadist who commits a multitude of grisly murders to further his master's goals, Pluto relishes using his mental powers to dominate others, even having a nurse claw her own throat out—while she's aware of what she's doing—and attempting to force a child to eat his own mother alive. Pluto attempts to twist the soul of Mint, threatening to unleash the Phantom virus in a global pandemic to blame on Mint, and later murders Tango's father for sheer spite. During the Battle of Yonkers, Pluto sweeps through the city and has everyone within massacred just to be "done with these apes". Upon the start of the great war, Pluto leads the Children and indulges his sadism, having thousands kill and eat one another while leaving them enough self-awareness to be horrified at their actions, even killing his own ally Leviathan when Leviathan loses against Tango. Pluto reveals he always intended on wiping out the other Children in his attempt to cleanse the earth of life and rule it like a god, seeing Heaven itself as nothing more than a means to an end to deliver him the power he craves. Of all the villains in the Heaven Cycle, Pluto stands as one of the worst: a revolting, despicable man who'd sell the entire world to avoid facing up to the pathetic sadist he truly is.
  • The Last Lamia: Dr. Theodore Erswick works for Avatech, aiding their hostile takeover. He assists Avatech in committing mass genocide on the Lamia species to harvest their DNA and use it to genetically modify humans. He experiments with his genetic rewriting by performing horrific and torturous experiments on innocent people just trying to survive, killing them or transforming them into mindless monsters in constant agony. When Rebel leader Xander makes a deal with Erswick to turn over his allies in exchange for Erswick curing his sister Lani's fatal disease, Erswick betrays him and instead kidnaps all four members of the rebel group, injecting them with his experimental formula. He then mocks them as they succumb to the formula's effects, with Lani burning to death from the inside and technician Brec transforming into another monster. When Xander confronts Erswick, Erswick tortures and kills him with a Tesla coil. He then commands the monster to capture the survivor, Jason, for further experimentation.

Fire Emblem Heroes

  • Surtr, the pyromaniac King of Muspell, expresses a lust for carnage and domination. He begins Book II invading the Kingdom of Nifl, and caps off the conquest by burning Fjorm's mother alive before her eyes. To oppose the Order of Heroes, Surtr forms an alliance with the Embla Empire, but quickly reveals his intent to burn the young Princess Veronica alive slowly and painfully in the Rite of Flames. Surtr tries to force an early surrender from Prince Alfonse by forcing the Order to choose between their lives and an innocent Askran village. Later, when Fjorm's older sister Gunnthra enlists the help of the Summoner and the Order to cull Surtr's invulnerable Muspellflame, he finds Gunnthra and proceeds to incinerate her in front of Fjorm, mocking the girl all the while. Showing no regard to even his own people, Surtr kept the village of his top soldier Helbindi, including his younger sister Menja, under the threat of a fiery death should he fail, a fate which unfortunately comes to pass. His boundless cruelty even extends to his daughters, who are treated as expendable tools he expects to obey his will and take every punishment for failure. Eventually betraying Veronica and even kidnapping the youngest princess of Nifl, Ylgr, Surtr plans to have them sacrificed to sustain his immortality. A sadistic and heartless excuse of a tyrant, Surtr provides no reason for his senseless and disgusting evil other than it being the blood right of a king.

This one I'm not certain of but thought I'd run by here.

Sturmbannfuhrer "Lance" from Arrowverse's Crisis on Earth-X

What is the work? The 2017 Crisis Crossover event for Arrowverse which featured the heroes of Earth-1 going up against Nazis from Earth-X, an Alternate Universe where the Nazis won the war and have established full control over the world. Many of Earth-1's heroes have an Earth-X Evil Doppelgänger part of the New Reich.

Who is The Sturmbannfuhrer? The Evil Doppelgänger of Earth-1's Quentin Lance, Sturmbannfuhrer is a member of the Schutzstaffel and a fanatical Nazi loyalist. He's put in charge of executing prisoners held in concentration camps, including the captured heroes of Earth-1. There he meets the Earth-1 Sara Lance, who reminds him of his own daughter. However he discovers that Sara is bisexual, to which he reveals his own daughter had the same sexual preference and that he had her executed for this, proudly declaring he had "expunged that filth from my family line forever". He tries to have the heroes executed by firing squad, but doesn't succeed due to timely intervention from Citizen Cold. Later on, when Earth-1 Oliver tries to impersonate Earth-X Oliver who is the fuhrer, Sturmbannfuhrer presents him with a gift, a jewish girl and the Earth-X doppelganger of Felicity Smoak, citing that Earth-X Oliver enjoyed executing Jews as a past time. While this was revealed to be an Impostor-Exposing Test, Sturmbannfuhrer does appear to do this for the real fuhrer. He is one of the few Schutzstaffel members with his fate left uncertain as he manages to escape before the end of the crossover.

Heinousness? Obviously the heinous factor is pretty high considering this is an Alternate Universe of Nazis. But Sturmbannfuhrer really stands out even among them, as all the other Nazis show compassion and love to someone else, while Sturmbannfuhrer executed his own daughter for her sexual orientation and is proud of it.

Mitigating Qualities? Earth-X Prometheus implied that the New Reich had spread its fanatical Nazi teachings to all newer generations, so that might be a Freudian Excuse. But Sturmbannfuhrer is far more awful than even his fellow Nazis, as all others are able to hesitate when their loved ones are at risk of coming to harm. The only sympathy he ever displays is seeing Earth-1 Sara as a waste of "Nordic perfection".

Final verdict? As I said earlier, I'm not too sure about this one. I think he mostly fits the bill, but I'll leave it up to you guys to decide.

Inclined to say no. The Arrowverse standard is gigantic, and I don't quite think he cuts it — I'm pretty sure that's what we generally agreed upon when the crossover passed through here some time ago.

The other members of Reich like Dark arrow, Overgirl and Eobard (who is an irritating miss from this trope) have more onscreen crimes and compared to the other arrowverse bad guys He doesn't do enough as his short screetime means he isn't able to have as many as crimes that are onscreen as he could. He'd probably count on his own but not here.

[tup] Flamingo and Mengele. [tdown] D'Hoffryn and Lance, the latter doesn't really strike me as heinous enough. He's the only character from Earth X with no redeeming qualities but he's just a lackey who doesn't do much onscreen.

Aight, I figured he might not make the cut. But just wanted to be sure.
