Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Cutting this unauthorized entry from Fire Emblem Heroes: Surtr is the utterly cruel and tyrannical king of Muspell, and his actions throughout the story cement how despicable he is. Before the story of Book II even begins, he destroys the kingdom of Nifl and brutally murders their queen, forcing Fjorm to run for her life. The first time the Order of Heroes encounters him, he wastes no time gloating about his invincibility and how he will burn Askr to the ground just for the hell of it. [[spoiler:He later viciously tortures Gunnthra and waits until Fjorm arrives to murder her, all for pure shits and giggles to torment Fjorm. Even when a way to defeat him is found, he merely resurrects in the process, taking his time to further inflict horrible emotional and mental damage against Fjorm. He also shows himself to be quite the Bad Boss by slaughtering Helbindi's entire village just to spite him for his failure, as well as depriving him of his only reason to fight. There's also not getting into how eager he is to murder two children for the Rite of Flames just to regain his immortality, as well as torturing his own daughter, Laevatein, to force her into performing the Rite of Flames, something that will kill her in the process. And while Laegjarn's intervention saves Laevatein's life, Laegjarn herself is the one who performs the rite, dying horribly afterwards, with Surtr not even giving her a second glance. He eventually meets his end by Helbindi's rescue of Veronica and Ylgr, depriving him of his immortality, and dies in a pathetic manner. A tyrant with no redeeming qualities whatsoever, Surtr cements himself as one of the most evil villains in the franchise.]]

I've also PM'ed the user who posted this unauthorized entry.

[tup] Red Grave and Hugo

Sorry it took a while, but here's my new candidate entree. In an underrated anime named Denpa-teki na Kanojo, we have Serial Killer Kiyoshi Kakura.

Who is Kiyoshi Kakura and what does he do?

In the first episode of this anime, a series of brutal murders has been happening with some of these bodies having wires strangling their necks. Our main character Juuzawa Juu began investigating these deaths after one of classmates became a victim and initially suspected his eccentric stalker Ochibana Ame as the culprit. During his investigation Juu eventually learned that the murders all happening during very likely rainy days and when he investigated the general locations of the murder, he gets text to go to the park to learn the truth from someone anonymous. Heading there he comes face to face with the killer, Kiyoshi Kakura, after his most recent murder and ended up fighting him. After beating him down and having him arrested, Kakura commits suicide in prison and then Juu learns the full story of these deaths from Kakura's accomplice, his sister Satsuki Miya.

Kakura used to be a good person before snapping one day and raping Satsuki in his unstable state of mind. After the horrible rape, Kakura killed a highschool girl and due to Stockholm Syndrome and enjoyment of seeing more people more miserable then her, Satsuki has been encouraging Kakura with his murders and taking pictures of these to post online. After one of his attacks, Satsuki though the victim might be still alive so she choked the body with wire and decided to do that for the rest of their victims to guarantee nobody comes out alive. After Satsuki gets taken down by Juu and Ame, Juu comes to the conclusion that she became crazy due to the horrible rape from her brother and became influence to these killing after seeing Kakura claim his first victim.

Heinousness:

A serial killer who brutally killed 13 known victims through beating with a baseball and a rapist who drove his own sister mad to become a serial killer with him, earning the highest body count in the series so far.

Mitigating Factor:

It is suggested at one point Kakura wanted to stop killing and got convince to continue by Satsuki, but it's never stated he did it out of guilt, likely doing it out of fear of being caught. He also started the killings and still enjoyed them after he continued them when he got over his hesitation.

Also when asked about his reason for snapping, it is suggested due to pressure. However not only is this unconfirmed due to nobody being able to explain it, not even his sister, even if it were the case it wouldn't disqualify him considering his acts go far pass this with his brutal murders.

There's also the idea he is mentally unstable and believes he is actually killing aliens and he's a government agent protecting them suggesting he has no idea what he's doing, this doesn't excuse his earlier crimes like the rape and his early murders since he done them in a clear state.

Final Verdict:

An anime serial killer with a few hoops, but nonetheless proves to qualify for this position.

  • Shar, Mistress of the Night, the Dark Lady, featured in a story arc in the comics and more prominently in the novels, is one of the oldest and most evil of all the gods. The Lady of Loss, Shar despises the life-bearing universe her once-beloved sister Selûne created and sought to wipe it out. Foiled, Shar formed a faith based around loss and nihilism with her clergy subverting and destroying hope itself. Shar even maintains a tower where she imprisons those who enjoy freedom so she may savor their despair, and during the Time of Troubles she manipulated Selune to destroy her mentally and eventually kill her and all her friends and worshippers. Taking a more proactive role in the modern day, Shar helped to destroy the goddess Mystra and unleash the Spellplague, later having her chief worshippers unleash the Shadow Storm to blanket all Faerun in life-stealing darkness, a prelude to the Cycle of Night where Shar intended on reducing all of creation to nothingness so she may better enjoy the cold, black void yet again.

Usually if there aren't many potholes (Scraggle or Lighty's writeups) I'll add it myself, but I know bob's had a few, and for Music!Femto it needs the songs/albums he's in.

Well, it's Friday, so now it's time to talk about a certain character.

What Is the Work?

Next Gen is a 2018 Netflix animated film based on the Chinese webcomic 7723 hosted on Baozou (yes, the sight that gave us the LOL, Troll, and Rage faces), animated in Canada. The film, despite its faults and source material, is actually pretty damn good, with great animation and characters.

In a futuristic metropolis called Grainland robots have become very commonplace in everyday society (hey wait, didn’t I write a short story based on this?), with everything being a living robot. Hair brushes, gates, even toilets are living things that are bright and happy characters ready to play their part in everyday life. People are obsessed with these things, especially the ones coming from super business robotics tycoon Justin Pin (an obvious Steve Jobs expy), who loves showcasing new robots for the world.

Meanwhile, Mai is just an ordinary punk girl who’s had a rough life. Her father left the family when she was a young age, and died not long after. Still grieving after all these years, Mai’s mom Molly spends her time escaping in technology and robots, neglecting Mai as she lives the life of a bullied luddite. However, that all changes when one day, Mai accidentally discovers 7723, a robot built by the kindhearted Dr. Tanner Rice capable of both insane weaponry, and naive kindness. Mai uses 7723 primarily to vent her anger towards society and its love for robots, but during their fun, an evil lurks within Justin Pin’s shadow.

Think The Iron Giant, but more dark and cynical. “I’m not a gun?”, more like “you are a gun.” But anyway, this is yet another spoiler villain (I’m on a role with these, aren’t I?), so if you want to see the movie before reading the EP, do so now.

Who Is he?

Ares (voiced by Jason Sedakis) is the ultimate villain of the movie. While he may appear to be a hulking, intimidating battle droid bodyguard for Justin Pin, he’s later revealed to be more than he lets on.

What has he done?

Created by Justin Pin to be the perfect robot, he takes being called “perfect” in stride. With that in mind, Ares deemed humanity as flawed, and planned to exterminate mankind in order to make the world a better place. Killing Justin after he’s created, he has a robot built to look like him, with Ares secretly controlling him. Using the Justin puppet, he creates and sells the new Gen 6 model Q-bot, a robot made to be the ultimate companion to everyone, with these placed in everyone’s home. Turns out that Ares made it so that, if activated, the bots overheat and become bombs capable of killing anybody upon contact. Ares plans to use these popular robots to kill every human on earth, children included, so that his plan can come into effect.

When he sees 7723 running around destroying his robots with Mai, he suspects Dr. Rice to be scheming behind his back (which he is, as he suspects something is wrong with Justin), he has him tied up and gagged, threatening to blow him up with a Q-bot if he doesn’t tell him the location of 7723. When Rice spills the beans, Ares deliberately stalls the deactivation of the robot bomb just to cause fear within Rice.

When Dr. Rice is forced by Ares to tell Molly about 7723 at her house, Ares battles 7723 with the intent of killing him, despite the robot not being able to fight back (he deleted his weapon system in order to make room for more happy memories). He then has Justin kidnap Molly, send out loads of suicide bombing Q-bots, then tries to shoot at Mai and 7723 as they escape (managing to shoot some of his own Q-bots without care, even crushing an innocent one for no reason).

When Mai and 7723 arrive at Justin’s headquarters to rescue Molly, they find Molly’s actually located at the big soccer stadium next door during a game, and that the entire thing has been a trap just to kill them. Ares, using Justin, arrives and instantly disintegrates Rice in from of Mai and 7723 when he tries to talk him out of killing them before trying to do the same to the duo. When the Justin robot tries to fight off 7723, Ares tries to kill Mai himself, though she thankfully makes a getaway. Ares jumps down onto the soccer field where 7723 fell on and tries to kill him. When he sees Mai rescuing Molly, he has Justin try and kill the two, but unfortunately (for him) spills the beans on his entire plan in front of the entire stadium audience, before trying to disintegrate Mai on the live feed. With Justin being revealed as a robot puppet, Ares decides to screw the puppet, and orders everyone’s Q-bot to detonate, preparing to kill hundreds, if not thousands of people, even having some try and kill 7723; he then has the stadium doors blocked so that no one can escape. So then comes the cool, flashy final fight between Ares and 7723, with Ares giving himself massive armor and high power weaponry.

7723: "You are very evil." Ares: "Eh, agree to disagree."

When he’s incapacitated by 7723, Ares uses the broken robotic corpse of Justin Pin to try one last time to disintegrate Mai, all while mocking her for caring for 7723 (“Aw, stop it. You’re going to make me cry. Not really. I’m kidding.”). When Mai vanishes for a few moments, Ares decides to destroy 7723 while he’s frozen due to rebooting. Mai gets right behind Ares’ exposed head and whacks it with a giant metal object like a baseball, ending the robot for good.

Redeeming Qualities?

While he claims to be wanting to create a world without conflict or war, he doesn’t really care for his robot brethren, casually using them as suicide bombers, and not batting an eye whenever they bite it (when he sees 7723 killing his machines, he only reacts in badly acted horror), and again, he crushes one of his bots for no reason other than because he can. His egotistical talks about being the perfect machine show that his claims are nothing but lies. Besides, we’ve had villains similar to Ares, such as Chakravartin and Albert Tesla, people who claim to be creating an ideal world, but are nothing but maniacal, self-preserving liars.

Heinousness?

No real contest, since everyone else is either a jerk, or legitimately well intentioned.

Conclusion

I see him as a keep. Despite some funny moments and his plan to create a flawless world, Ares doesn’t give a damn about anyone but himself, with his talks about perfection and his sociopathic tendencies causing his words to ring hollow.
