Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

"Yes' to Ganelon, there.

Now....for another Ravok "Reproposal of character once downvoted," I'd like to discuss a villain from one of my favorite video game series of all time...and why I think he ultimately counts despite being ruled a Non-Keep some time ago (And yes, I bring new evidence and extra tie-in materials, worry not, lol)

What's the work?

Batman: Arkham Series is a series of four video games by Rocksteady studios (Except the third one) detailing, what else, the adventures of Batman.

A dark, violent adaptation of the classic comic book hero, our games see Batman pitted against all sorts of ne'er-do-wells and misfits, from current CM baddies the Joker and the Scarecrow, to more tragic or respectable villains like Ra's Al Ghul and Deathstroke.

Today... I'd like to discuss a villain who I believe fits in the former category. From the second game in the series, Arkham City.....meet Hugo Strange.

Who is he?

Doctor/Professor (Which it is depends on what material you're reading, lol) Hugo Strange is the Big Bad of Arkham City, the mastermind of the titular project, and perhaps the most ingenious criminal mind the Dark Knight faces throughout the games.

A genius psychiatrist with a mind for torture and psychological torments, Strange has long fostered an intense, burning desire to be a "hero" and purge the world of the criminal element....and though his major crimes come from the video game itself, his atrocities extend all the way back to first game Arkham Asylum....

What has he done?

As a psychiatrist in Arkham Asylum, Strange perpetrated dozens—if not hundreds—of horrifying, unethical experiments on the inmates there, driving a huge chunk of them to such insanity that Strange lobotomized them, chunked them into isolation, and left them there to die...these inmates would come to be known as the "Lunatics" Batman faces throughout the game.

Taking interest in Jervis Tetch—the Mad Hatter—and his mind control technology and techniques, Strange convinces the imprisoned Tetch to teach these abilities to Strange, in exchange for Strange supplying Tetch with a new "Alice" for his sick, disgusting (Heavily implied sexual) fantasies, in truth just handing off his own secretary to the insane Tetch to be done with as the Hatter pleases.

Simultaneously ingratiating himself into Warden Quincy Sharp's favor, Strange slowly takes the man apart psychologically before convincing him to give into his schizophrenic delusions of being his insane ancestor Amadeus Arkham....and orchestrates Sharp into becoming a Serial Killer of the Asylum's inmates, before, after the man kills untold amounts of inmates who "won't be missed" plus any who could interfere or rat out his plans, Strange uses the information to blackmail Sharp and further cement himself as the man's puppet master, even using Tetch's techniques to take firm control of him.

After Joker sparks a riot at the Asylum, Strange evacuates to the shadows, ordering Sharp to make sure all of the "Lunatics" and evidence of Strange's crimes are "disposed of," before Strange does the unthinkable...deduces the identity of Batman.

Having grown obsessed with the hero, Strange manages to build a psychological profile on Batman using countless testimonies from criminals, becoming more and more obsessed with the fear and terror Batman has instilled in them and wanting to cause that kind of reaction himself....until he finally deduces Batman is indeed Bruce Wayne.

Though at first planning to sell this info to the highest bidder, Strange changes his tune as he realizes EXACTLY what he possesses, and he promptly begins tracking down a "benefactor"...and eventually hunts down the powerful leader of the League of Assassins, Ra's Al Ghul.

Revealing to Ra's his plans for Gotham and ultimately convincing him to be his benefactor, Strange returned to Gotham....and began his plans for Arkham City.

Assisting Sharp in becoming mayor of Gotham, Strange has Sharp unveil the ideas for "Arkham City," a maximum super prison comprised of a huge chunk of Gotham walled off from the rest of the city, where criminals would quite literally be chunked in and left to fend for themselves in what quickly would become a hellish, anarchic landscape of "strongest survive, all others die."

To cement his plans for Arkham City, Strange hires the Trask twins, two superhuman criminals, had them betray their current employer Two-Face and slaughter his gang, then orders them to attack a press conference being given by Sharp. After the duo are beaten by Batman, Strange has them activate their powers....and turns them into suicide bombers, making them blow themselves up and take 300 innocent civilians down with them.

This finally cementing Gotham's approval for Arkham City, Strange builds the prison in record time, beginning to throw any kind of criminal into it—from murderers to rapists to petty thugs and pickpockets, having no problem chunking otherwise innocent people who stole a wallet into a prison filled with psychopaths and gang rapists. And should anyone be caught in a PROTEST against Arkham City? Strange has them rounded up and chunked into Arkham City on trumped up charges. Oh, and if you were involved with Arkham City in any way? From construction to just running numbers? In you go on trumped up charges just to eliminate any and all traces of potential "problems" to Arkham City's flourishmeny.

Strange also implements his own personal security force, TYGER, an elite force of soldiers and officers loyal to the mayor and Gotham....truthfully? Each and every TYGER guard is brainwashed by Strange into being his loyal slaves, even willing to die for him, taking a personal interest in one Vincent Garrett, turning him into TYGER's captain and making him his most loyal servant.

With Arkham City constructed....in case it wasn't obvious? The city goes to hell. Murder, rape, and torture are daily occurrence among the "lower" criminals as even food becomes a luxury, the city is divided into sections ruled by supervillains, and any of the hundreds of innocents thrown in don't last long before being....well, murdered, raped, tortured, or all of the above.

Now, as Arkham City finishes construction, Batman sneaks inside and attempts to gain insight into Arkham City's plans....when Batman captures a TYGER guard and interrogates him for Strange's role in the villainy of Arkham City, Strange later takes that guard aside and promptly tortures him to death—both for all his information on Batman from the interrogation and as a form of "revenge" for the man revealing Strange's role to the hero.

As Strange's TYGER forces assume control of Gotham itself, rounding up countless innocents on the most ridiculous of charges and throwing them into Arkham City and murdering anyone who presents too much of a problem to Strange's plans, Strange himself resorts to using the League of Assassins as his personal executioners, having any particularly....troublesome inmates of Arkham City murdered by the League and strung up as warnings to all.

Strange also has various interactions with other villains of Gotham....he rats out undercover GCPD officers to Penguin to be tortured to death....he releases insane serial killer Victor Zsasz onto Gotham and lets him kill several people before capturing him with TYGER to bolster their public approval....and he promises to cure Mr. Freeze's wife Nora if Freeze will assist him, in truth manipulating the man with no intent to help his wife, before shipping her off to Joker to be used as a hostage to force Freeze's further compliance.

In his attempts to capture Batman, Strange orders his TYGER guards to open fire on civilians, killing them while trying to take down the Dark Knight, and ultimately captures the hero and locks him in Arkham City, planning to gleefully force him to survive in the city.....before Strange commences Protocol 10.

Protocol 10, as Strange reveals upon activating it? Entails the wholesale massacre of the entirety of Arkham City. Ordering TYGER guards in helicopters and on the ground to kill, Strange giddily watches as rockets topple entire buildings and prisoners—innocent and "guilty" alike—are mowed down by Strange's TYGER guards.

In the meantime, Strange proceeds to dispose of his two most loyal minions, chunking Sharp into Arkham City and revealing it over the loudspeakers to ensure the man's horrible demise while personally killing TYGER's captain Garrett when the man outlives his usefulness, grinning sadistically the whole way.

As hundreds are murdered and the death toll rises, Batman barrelling his way, the Dark Knight discovers....Arkham City is phase one. Strange plans to take these goals worldwide, starting with Metropolis, Keystone City, Coast City, planning to set up similar concentration camps in them before wiping them out....and continuing this horrific pattern until the entire planet is "purged" of crime and Strange takes over the League of Assassins from Ra's as its immortal leader and lords over all as the hero and 'savior' of the world.

In the midst of it all, Strange recreates the scene of the murder of Batman's parents to torment him, threatens the life of Catwoman's teenaged best friend/surrogate sister Holly, and orders Wayne Manor be raided and its occupants killed—except for Bruce's loyal butler, Alfred Pennyworth, who Strange plans to drag through the streets, broken, and force him to be a mouthpiece speaking to Batman's "failure" to all.

As Batman ascends Strange's control tower to confront the man, Strange proclaims his victory and how much "better" he is than Batman at being a hero, all while boasting his coming ascension to glory....just in time for Ra's to show up, run the man through with a sword, and reveal that he truthfully never trusted Strange as a potential heir.

Though taking a moment to attempt to beg for a second chance, Strange realizes how utterly he's been betrayed....and uses his final words to activate "Protocol 11," a self-destructive sequence in his tower, in a final attempt at revenge on both Batman and Ra's for ruining his plans.

In the end, Ra's is killed in the explosion, Batman escapes, and a large chunk of Arkham City is saved and Strange's mad plans are stopped....but at the cost of thousands of lives once the dust settles.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

No excuse. At all. Strange is an egotistical, self-righteous sociopath who got his start in evil For Science!, and evolved into something worse due to his desire to be a hero and purge the world of crime.

Now, the reason Strange was disqualified before... it was deemed that he was a Well-Intentioned Extremist. That for all of his crimes, he truly believes that he's making the world a safer place for innocents.

This.....really, really doesn't hold up when all things are considered.

Strange doesn't care about innocents. He slaughters them by the hundreds to kickstart Arkham City and throws hundreds if not thousands inside it just for protesting or having the most petty of crimes.

He doesn't want to just make the world safer. Strange wants to be a hero and to rule. Each and every time Strange talks about "purging" the criminal element and making a "new, glorious future"? He caps it off with talking about how it's his long deserved "vindication and ultimate victory", proclaiming how he'll finally "be a hero, a bigger one than Batman EVER was!", and boasts how he'll "assume my master's position as head of his organization, rule the world, and make myself immortal".

Honestly, when the chips are down? Strange's WIE vibes are barely noticeable. He's a Knight Templar with a god complex. He refers to criminals—even petty pickpockets—as "filth" deserving "cleansing," never stops talking about how he deserves glory and to be seen as a "savior," takes over Gotham in a police state of brutality, and kills innocents by the thousands while making plans for a horrific redoing of Arkham City over and over again and racking up a bodycount unfathomable until he assumes control of the world as he has Gotham—brutally and in a police-state like fashion with brainwashed soldiers serving his every whim.

Strange doesn't care about saving the world. He cares about the world SEEING him as its SAVIOR. Does he truly despise criminals? Sure. But that doesn't change the simply fact that he's not killing them en masse to protect innocents, he's killing them en masse to make himself a hero and to make himself a "glorious future" to RULE over.

Besides this? Nothing even close to redeeming. Strange is claimed by Riddler to dress up as Batman and cry in his room at night, but even if it's true, there's zero indication this is anything but him self-pitying because he's not a beloved "hero" yet. He also seems to want to "cure" a few patients, like Two-Face, but ultimately it's nothing but his curious mind and desire for allies, not a genuine desire to HELP them.

Hell, when questioned by Mr. Freeze in what was meant as a rhetorical question if Strange has ever loved anyone, Strange briskly and coldly responds with a simple "No."

And as for loyalty to Ra's? Nothing there. Strange explicitly notes in the tie-in comic he's just a benefactor, and that STRANGE is the one who approached Ra's and convinced him (So no, Strange actually isn't just operating as an extension of Ra's, Ra's is following Strange's lead). Strange sees him as nothing but his path to immortality and world domination with the League, believing himself to be a worthy heir to Ra's empire and wasting not a second in trying to kill the man when he betrays him.

No allies he doesn't betray, no standard he doesn't subvert, no horror he won't commit in his quest to be a 'hero.'

Heinousness?

The Arkham games....have a HIGH standard. Joker is a mass torturer and murderer with domestic abuse, threatening rape and murder to his own minions' loved ones, and countless other atrocities under his belt, while the likes of Scarecrow nearly Fear Gasses a huge chunk of America and drives it into an insane, murdering rage.

Even with this, however? Strange passes....easily. Strange murders hundreds of innocents, drives countless patients and inmates to insanity before lobotomizing them and disposing of them, turns Quincy Sharp into a serial killer, creates a hellish super prison that's actually just a nightmarish free-for-all where thousands of petty crooks and innocent people are thrown in with the most vile rapists and killers Gotham has to offer, then plans to wipe them all out, build more camps like these, and repeat the process over and over until the world is his.

And that's not even getting into turning Gotham into a police state, betraying all his allies, torturing Batman, turning all of his minions into brainwashed stooges, committing hundreds of torturous experents, etcetera, etcetera.

Final Verdict?

My final thoughts on the matter are as follows:

Hugo Strange is a Knight Templar with a god complex who wants to be a hero. He kills countless people, is a massive sadist, and all his claims of bettering Gotham and "cleaning up filth" are utter hogwash when we take him as a full character and see that he spends far more time talking about how he'll be hailed as a "hero" and "savior" when the dust settles, and honestly, even his supposed WIE claims are legitimately just Knight Templar ravings of "Criminals are a cancer needing to be purged" and such....while perpetrating the same fate to rapists and pickpockets alike.

In my opinion, Strange Keeps. Easily. I'll understand any counterarguments and will be happy to debate, but I do indeed believe he counts.

Thoughts?

No! That is NOT Solid Snake! Stop impersonating him!

@MenInGreyToBlack I agree but there is something I want to discuss first.

In regards to Strange his conversations with Dent are the only thing that may count as a mitigating factor as far as I know but through reading the script of the tapes he clearly doesn't actually care about curing him considering the deal he made with him and him bullying Dent with his fake coins. Alright, well here's one I'm surprised wasn't snatched up right away but searching the thread, the discussion dates and the reserves on the drafts page shows me nothing so I can't imagine I'm stepping on any toes. Anyways:

What is the work?

TAU is a Netflix film from back in June. In it, a young thief, Julia, is mysteriously kidnapped one day and wakes up in a high tech house along with two other captives. Diving right into it, let's look at the prick responsible.

Who is Alex? What has he done?

Thomas Alexander Upton is a tech CEO with a dark secret. Working on a project for a home assist AI, of which the title character is the prototype, he kidnaps criminals and puts them through fatal tests to improve his program. Seen in silhouette painfully triggering memories from Julia's chip, Alex is next seen after Julia and her fellow captives try and escape, activating the house's defence systems and resulting in the deaths of the other two captives. Angered at the damage to his laboratory, Alex prepares to beat Julia (possibly to death) before Tau soothes him.

From here on out Alex will routinely leave his home for work, ordering Tau to maim Julia if she does not complete the tasks he assigns for her. When Julia attempts to negotiate for a release date from captivity, Alex becomes enraged, threatening to have Tau kill her if she does not follow orders. Befriending Tau, Julia learns Alex has been operating as a Serial Killer to perfect his AI, having killed 11 people before her to extract data from their brains. Torturing Tau whenever he finds something as simple as a smudge on his tablet by erasing memories, Alex forces Tau to beat Julia when she attacks him. Later, when Tau tries to help Julia escape, Alex tries to wipe all his memories before taking Julia downstairs to kill her and extract her chip. Unfortunately for Alex, Julia manages to contact a piece of Tau with his memories in tact, chopping off his hand to be able to access the self destruct button in his bedroom, resulting in his house crumbling and him being crushed to death while he begs for his life.

Heinousness?

No problem here, even if Julia's two co-captives were killed by accident, he attempts to kill a dozen people just in the name of scoring a billion dollar contract.

Mitigating factors?

First thing is his relation with Julia...while he initially seems to be reasonable and open to negotiation, when she pushes too far, Alex immediately reminds her he can end her life any moment he chooses. While she gets him to lower his guard at one point through seduction, never is this shown to be on his part anything more than lust and never does he take his plan to kill her off the table.

Next up, the film does pitch Alex's emotions in a rather weird way and notes that the tests are interesting to him because he doesn't feel them strongly like his subjects do. That being said, Alex behaves and acts like any sociopath, in that while he may be unwilling to extend care or concern for others, he sure as hell shows anger, pride and in his final moments fear for his life, so I don't think this translates to anything that would hamper agency.

Conclusion

Weird thing with emotions not breaking it for me, I think he keeps.
