Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

ACW: I forgot the novel and don't usually take fanfiction into account. What I was saying is that I usually don't see that many CM adaptations (like in animation, films or games) from some of comics more iconic examples, save for Brianiac, Joker, Red Skull and Ultron who get these out the wazoo.

Time for my penultimate Cheo-yong candidate...Chong Nam-ho.

Who is Chong Nam-ho?

Now...in 1998? There were a string of serial murders with the same MO: the victims were young women, found strangled and their news snapped. The city was in uproar, people were terrified. Chong Nam-ho was arrested for the murders as the prime suspect, but without sufficient evidence, the police were forced to release him. Officer Choi, the head detective on the case was incensed, believing Nam-ho to be guilty. And on his way out of the station? Nam-ho turned and looked at Choi...and grinned at him, sealing his guilt to him in his mind. But not long after? Nam-ho vanished without a trace.

Now, years later, a group of campers are taking dares for one of their number to head to a supposed mass grave at their camping site and snap a selfie...one does so, and is approached by a shadowy figure. Not long after, a new young woman is found by the authorities: throttled, neck snapped....and then another, and then team Cheo-yong notices a detail: the roof of the victims' mouths? are carved in with a number, detailing how many victims he's up to...and he's on 17. and this bit of info? Was NEVER released to the public, making them realize it isn't a copycat.

It turns out, the last victim in 1998? Was a woman close to Choi named Ji-hyeon, a hospitla worker who cared for his aging mother....Ji-hyeon was murdered and Choi snapped. He kidnapped Nam-ho and dragged him out to the woods, ordering him to confess. Nam-ho attacked Choi instead with a corkscrew and Choi shot him dead, burying the corpse. Cheo-yong realizes what happened: the campers found Nam-ho's burial site, and his vengeful spirit possessed one of them. The team catches Nam-ho in his new host when he goes for a new victim, but have no evidence...Cheo-yong? Seemingly snaps and goes all Choi on him. Cheo-yong uses the one weapon that can destroy an evil spirit: his shaman knife. Nam-ho mocks him, saying he won't kill an innocent human...but Cheo-yong furiously tries to stab him. Nam-ho panics and flees the body...only for Na-young, possessing team member Ha-woo, to seize his spirit and stab him...with the REAL shaman knife. Yep, the team fooled him completely to get Nam-ho to flee the poor sap's body to be finished off and put to rest for good. The murder case is closed with some clever lies for the public, and the day is saved.

mitigating qualities?

Finally an evil spirit who counts. There's nothing positive at all about Nam-ho. He has a huge bodycount, with 17 victims, and was stopped going for number 18 with no sign of every stopping. He's just a twisted prick, with a huge count, well above most killers in the season, and his seeming plan is to bodyjack people and the leave them when he's had enough so they pay for his crimes. Nothing much else to say here.

Conclusion?

And a yes from me. The last Cheo-yong keeper will be up soon.

And now my last Cheo-yong post...

Who is our villain?

It's a duo. episode 5 of Season 2. I did this one a bit out of order from Nam-ho because honestly, this guy was the worst for me....a woman is awoken by creepy giggling in the middle of the night....she looks for her son who explains he's playing hide and seek with 'them.'...but nobody is there. Except for a group of pale children she can't see...

Now, a car accident? Leads Cheo-yong to uncover a creepy conspiracy. He meets the ghostly children who are timid and scared of him..and heads to a pharmaceuticals company headed by Yang Eu-mok as its director. With Na-young, Cheo-yong...discovers something horrifying.

See, With his Regional Director, Yang and E&K Pharmaceuticals has a pretty horrible business practice: With a series of orphanages throughout Korea, Somalia and Russia? They test their chemicals. On the orphans. Experimenting on them in ways that are often awful, and then get rid of the evidence, with numerous children dying in mysterious circumstances. The ghost kids from the beginning were all experimented on...and then, Yang and the Director ordered the orphanage burnt, with the kids trapped inside. They all burnt alive. Cheo-yong rescues a young girl name Ji-hyun from one orphanage who's being experimented on, whose brother was murdered on Yang's orders.

Locating another of the orphanages, Cheo-yong rushes there, but not before the kids are emptied out. Yang also orders the orphanage's director murdered, and Cheo-yong fights the assailant off. Cheo-yong, an orphan himself? Gives into blind, unstoppable rage and RUSHES to E&K in a fury, fighting through security until he reaches Yang, seeing him about to have the kids disposed of. An enraged Cheo-yong holds Yang at gunpoint as Yang breaks down crying and begging for his life....Cheo-yong's supervisor arrives in time to talk him down from committing murder, as justified as it may be...but Yang and the Regional Director are exposed and taken into custody to go down for their crimes.

Mitigating Qualities?

There is no other crime like this in the whole series. Experimenting on children on grand scales and murdering them? Having them burnt alive? It's unique and it's atrocious and the only excuse they have is sheer greed. Can I say anything else that wouldn't be supefluous?

Conclusion?

Keep, keep, keep.

He's not in it as much, but he's the one making sure it happens while Yang is in charge of the Koran end of it. They're partners in the affair. That'll do it for Cheo-yong, folks.

Yes to Yang.

All right, so I was going to introduce a new canidate earlier today, but chickened out at the last second. Let's try it again.

What's the Work?

Anna is a YA duology by Kendare Blake, consisting of the works Anna Dressed in Blood and Girl of Nightmares. 17-year-old ghost hunter Theseus Cassio Lowood has sent ghosts into the afterlife using an athame his late father had used before being killed by an unknown ghost, hoping one day, he will confront that same ghost and avenge his father. When told about a ghost known as "Anna Dressed in Blood," who is rumored to have ripped apart at least 27 people who've entered her house over the past 50+ years, Cas and his mother move to a local town in Canada in order for him to deal with Anna. Anna, however, is far from a CM.

The actual canidate will be the "unknown ghost" I mentioned earlier.

Who is He/What Has He Done?

The Obeahman is a voodoo ghost/demon hybrid who also serves as the Big Bad of the duology. Although he doesn't make an appearance until the climax of the first book, his crimes of chomping out large chunks of his victims do not go unnoticed throughout the story. The first of his victims we know of is Cas's father when Cas was only seven years old, resulting in the boy being traumatized over the death and his mother and godfather becoming ten times more protective with him. Ten years later, the Obeahman returns with devouring three more victims: Jerk Jocks Will and Chase, and an unfortunate jogger who was at the wrong place at the wrong time. As it turns out, he had been following the Lowoods since the death of Cas's father, hiding in their attic almost the entire time. Although Cas and his mother had a pet cat, Tybalt, to scope out any weird hoo-haa's in their new house, they surmised his hissing at nothing throughout the first book as meaningless until it was too late, and the Obeahman had killed Tybalt as well. As Cas and his friends, Anna included, fight him, one of them is injured in the leg, and to prevent any more harm on the heroes, or anyone, Anna pulls off a Heroic Sacrifice by opening a portal to Hell and dragging the Obeahman down with her. Everything seems to settle back to normal (albeit bittersweet) after that, but...

A year later, in the second book, Cas discovers that Anna and the Obeahman were not being treated equally down in Hell; in fact, the Obeahman has been torturing Anna the whole time since she dragged him to Hell. When Cas and another girl, Jestine, make their way to "the other side" (a part of Hell), they find that the Obeahman had transformed from a voodoo man to some creepy spider-like creature that had linked Anna to It, sewing Anna's eyes and mouth shut before harvesting her. When they try to save her, It whacks Jestine away, nearly killing her, and Cas must fight It on his own. As he is, he notices the other ghosts that were stuck in the Obeahman's spot of Hell were also either ghosts he or his father had "sent away" using the athame or had been bitten to death by the Obeahman (including his father, his cat, and Will). He realizes by this point that the Obeahman had been torturing all these spirits, most of them which don't deserve to be in Hell, for Lord knows how long. Cas nearly gets himself butchered when battling the Obeahman, but once he defeats It, It's death releases all the spirits that had been trapped on the "other side" for so long, as well as free Anna herself from the Obeahman.

Freudian Excuse/Mitigating Factors

None. Absolutely none.

Heinous Standard

Beyond any other antagonist in the books. Not even Malvina Korlov, Anna's abusive and controlling mother (and a character I've almost considered as a likely canidate), comes close to being as horrific and torturous as the Obeahman.

Conclusion?

I'd say The Obeahman fits the bill.  What do you guys think?
