Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up][up][up]N Ma is the embodiment of all nightmares. Hes got zero agency as he needs to consume magic due to that giving him an endless hunger for it.

Though his voice actor Daisuke Namikawa would later play Kuervo/Quervo in Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger. So he did end up getting a Super Sentai CM after all.

Setting?

DC Universe is setting where most stories of DC Comics titles take place. Not long ago it undergo a reboot with crossover event “Flashpoint” and all titles were relaunched under “The New 52” logo, offering a new modern take on characters and their origins. This print was ended with “Rebirth” initiative that restored most of DC Universe to its pre-Flashpoint state, leaving only few elements of “The New 52” (continuity for example). My candidate is the one, who was previously probably dismissed as “Generic Doomsday Villain” during his debut in “The New 52”, but he managed to “gather” personality later on as the one and only tyrant ruler of “Apokolips” and one of the most dangerous beings in the Universe – Darkseid.

Who is Darkseid?

Born as a mortal mud grubber under a name Uxas (who couldn’t wait for everything to hurry up and die), future Darkseid lived on the planet under the rule of extremely powerful, but ultimately careless giant beings called “The Old Gods”. This “Old Gods” often were dancing and having fun on the mortals land, carelessly crashing many of them under their feet. During one of this “parties of Gods” Uxas decided that “enough is enough” and climbed on the forbidden mountain, where “The Old Gods” slept and started planting doubt and hate in them for each other. And “The Old Gods” went to war against one another, resulted in far greater destruction than ever before. During this war most of the mud grubbers were killed and Uxas’s sister was mortally wounded. When “The Old Gods” were left powerless and tired because of the war, Uxas take his chance and start draining them of their powers and killing them as a result, transforming in to a “New God” under the new name – “Darkseid”. As the first act of his new status, Darkseid start spreading chaos and destruction in his homeworld. Izaya, who was husband of dying Uxas’s sister, tried to lead the remaining mud grubbers to safety, only to confront the last of “The Old Gods”, who as the last act of his life give Izaya his power transforming him to another New God under the name “Highfather”. Highfather tried to plead Darkseid to use their powers to “bring back those we lost and start a new age of peace in their world” but those soft pleas only drive Darkseid angrier and Darkseid simply destroyed their world, leaving only Highfather and him as survivors.

Eons later, Darkseid created his own world “Apokolips”, which he ruled with reign of terror. He was at war with Highfather and his forces of “New Genesis”. Metron, worrying that their war may end up destroying the universe itself negotiate a peace between them by exchanging sons of Highfather (Scot) and Darkseid (Orion). Scot was thrown in to the mines soon after on the Apokolips. One day, after many years of control and domination, his rule was compromised by creature who was "born from chaos" under the name Kaiyo. Out of boredom she decided to cause a fight among small parademon group and teleports before Darkseid killed this parademons and tried to kill her. Angered by this defiance, Darkseid started hunting her across the multiverse and encountering various versions of Superman along the way. Surprised by meeting a creature with powers to rival his own, Darkseid destroyed world after world, because he was unable to stand to see someone with such power. It was ultimately revealed that Darkseid come to like whole cycle of killing, so he was often let Kaiyo live during their chase, as he was planning to kill all Superman’s in the multiverse. During all of this, he managed to harbor enough Superman DNA to create his clone with all of Kal-El’s memories, which he uses as one of his “Hunger Dogs” – group of elite warriors. He also collected four females from four different species and drafted them in to his service. He called them his “Furies of Apokolips” and gives them new names - K'li, Famine, Pestillence, and Death. He impregnated Death with his own child, which he planned to use later on to infect Earth-2 core.

Eventually he ordered his lieutenant Steppenwolf to attack Earth-2 and its inhabitants, which resulted in death of all Amazons (expect of Wonder Woman), most of the God’s and millions humans. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman end up sacrificing themselves to stop this invasion. While Steppenwolf were busy with Earth-2, Darkseid attacked Prime Earth, kidnapping many humans of the planet to transform them in to new parademons. However the combine strength of defenders of that world, under the name “Justice League”, was proven to be too much for him and Darkseid was defeated and send in very injured state back to Apokolips. There Darkseid sealed himself in the Mobius Chamber at the heart of Apokolips for five years to heal his injuries and replenish his strength. From there Darkseid decided to direct his attention toward never fully recovered from his armies' earlier assault Earth-2. Due to Darkseid draining energy from the core, Apokolips begins to die and Darkseid planned to use Earth-2 to “feed” his planet and restore the core. Due to being trapped in the core chamber as the result of such lengthy healing process, Darkseid manipulates his adopted son Scot (Mister Miracle) to free himself. Upon freeing himself (thanks to Big Barda betraying Scot and joining Darkseid), Darkseid easily beats Mister Miracle and offered his ally Fury (daughter of Wonder Woman) to join him, an offer she seemingly accepted (in reality she uses this to help Mister Miracle escape later on). After imprisoning Scott, he was visited by the Terrence Sloan who offered him a deal from New Genesis that says that if Apokolips feeds only on Earth-2, Highfather will not interfere. Darkseid unleashed his terraformer on the Earth-2, attacking the heroes and killing countless human survivors before he was attacked by empowered Green Lantern (Alan Scott), which allowed the last group of survivors to leave the Earth on a ship. Darkseid nonetheless succeed in letting Apokolips devour the Earth-2 and declare it’s a victory.

Later on Darkseid sent his Fury from Prime Earth Lashina and the assassin Kanto on a hunt for Amazon Myrina Black with whom he sired a child many years ago. When Superman and Lex Luthor were sent to Apokolips by Lena Luthor, Darkseid orders Desaad to release prisoners from slave camps and promises freedom to anyone who kills Superman, hoping that Superman will break if he will be forced to kill innocent slaves. Later he started a war with Anti-Monitor Mobius, who wanted to kill Darkseid to free himself from Antimatter. After his daughter from Myrina, who was calling herself Grail, summoned him towards Anti-Monitor, Darkseid begin to battle him. During this battle Darkseid summoned Black Racer to help him, but Anti-Monitor fused it with the Justice League's Flash and merged its power with the Anti-Life Equation and simply sends Black Racer after Darkseid, killing him. But Grail have other plans, and she used newly born child of Superwoman and Mazahs, and absorbed the Omega Effect from Lex Luthor as well as the Anti-Life Equation from Steve Trevor in to him, transforming him as a new Darkseid under her control. During the fight he was separated from the Anti-Life Equation and reverted back into a child and was taken by defeated Grail to be raised.

Sometime later, Darkseid in his child form demands that Grail start feeding him essence of the Old Gods from different pantheon. As thus Grail start killing children of Zeus and absorbe their power and give that power to Darkseid, restoring his original power and age little by little. Later he targets Zeus himself and manipulates him in to a fight, where he kills him and absorbe his essence, fully restoring his power. After enslaving species of Amazon Jungle and using them to build a portal to Themyscira, Darkseid sends Grail there to turn Amazons in to new breed of parademons with mix of Apokolips tech and Amazonian magic. But Wonder Woman managed to defeat him with the help from Steven Trevor and her brother Jason. As a result of the defeat, all the essence of the cods, that empowered Darkseid were released from him and he disappeared in to unknown location in amnesiac state.

Heinous Standard?

He is pretty high in there. He destroyed several worlds, committed genocides and enslaved several species.

Redeeming Traits?

Not much to speak of. During his years as Uxas he saved his sister and her husband once from the foot of dancing “Old God” (by pushing them aside), but later on he dismissed them as idiots, hitting his brother-in-law and even said that he wouldn’t blame the Gods for killing them. He never shows much care when his sister was mortally wounded during the war between “The Old Gods” (which he orchestrated) and seems to be only focused toward stealing God’s power for himself and upon becoming Darkseid he started laying waste on his home planet, not caring whether his sister dies or not, as Izaya tries to save her. When Highfather offer him a chance to save their planet and rule it with peace, he simply destroyed it for no other reason, that he found “soft pleas” of Highfather disgusting.

Later on he started using his newfound power for tyranny and oppression, becoming even worse than “The Old Gods” who were before him and not caring in the slightest about that.

Before the exchange of the sons between him and Highfather Darkseid openly admitted that presence of one of his children on New genesis will not stop him from going on war with them and only agreed on a deal, because Metron convinced him that this will be a nice distraction for Highfather as Darkseid will prepare for war.

During his time as a child in Grail’s care, he didn’t seem to have much care for her either. He repeatedly refers to her as a tool (“conduit”) and only seems to regard her as means to an end, due to having limited resources at the time.

Conclusion?

I will say Yes.

You say he let Kaiyo live? Other than that, yes to Darkseid.

Speaking of him, should we split his current entry? It's all under Post-Crisis, but he first appeared in 1970. It doesn't seem like, say, Joker, who first appeared in 1940 but his notable crimes are all Post-Crisis.

So, doing a bit of research, I think most of Darkseid's stuff could be moved to the Pre-Crisis group, with Final Crisis staying where it is. Like so (and yes, I know the first one has 6 potholes, but I can't think of which one to cut):

  • Darkseid: Born Prince Uxas, he is one of the New Gods, is the ultimate God of Evil in the DC Universe, and is the Trope Codifier for Dystopia Justifies the Means. As Evil Overlord of Apokolips, Darkseid subjects its denizens to hellish conditions with the overwhelming majority of the population ill-treated slaves. His Elite fare no better as Darkseid is all too willing to subject them to hideous tortures or obliteration should they fail him. Darkseid detests all that is good in the universe and seeks to extend his influence everywhere he can. While he once loved someone, his mother, Heggra, wanting to make him evil killed Suli, helping turn Darkseid into the Galactic Conqueror we know him as (but not before he had Heggra poisoned). Just as bloodthirsty and monstrous as any of those who serve him, Darkseid combines urbane sophistication, limitless cruelty and insatiable drive for power, and is the one single villain that all the heroes despise and fear.
  • Final Crisis: Darkseid is dying, and so wants to destroy the multiverse and all life in it as a final gesture. He kills his son Orion to gain dominion over Earth. Once there, he enslaved the minds of everyone he could touch, turning them into savage parodies of themselves, intending to as he said "murder their souls and take them to hell without end." His ultimate motive is to use the Anti-Life Equation to rob everybody of free will and turn them all into mindless zombies who worship him as a god while he tortures them eternally, all for fun.

[tup] Darksied. I still find it a little jarring that there's only one non comic incarnation of him as a CM as you'd think he'd be one of those iconic examples. But then again the same can be said of Norman Osborn, Cletus Kassedy, or Sabretooth.

Just a quick update, but I've decided I'm going to finish reading all of the Planescape material and finalize all my potential candidates before doing any of the write ups. I'm pretty close to being done, and there's technically no time limit of write ups so I'm going to put my current two on hold until I get everyone I want to do effort posted and voted up.

Hmmm...it's established that Pre-Crisis Darkseid and Post-Crisis Darkseid are the same thing, since the Fourth World was unaffected by the mass reboot. So with his CM profile, should that mean that Pre-Crisis Darkseid's crimes would still be in effect with Post-Crisis Darkseid?
