Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

EP: Slender Man from the games Slender: the Eight Pages and its sequel Slender: The Arrival.

Slender Man acts as the Big Bad of both games, and his portrayal here is one of the most menacing and actively malevolent ones of any of the works starring him.

In the first game, the protagonist (who is revealed in the next game to be a young woman named "Kate") is stalked by Slendy while she gathers deranged notes written about him from various locations around an unidentified dark forest. The more notes she gathers, the more closely the monster pursues her, until she is eventually captured and subjected by Slendy to what the next game reveals is forced brainwashing to make her his slave.

In the next game, the protagonist is now Kate's best friend Lauren, who travels to her home near the woods to meet her after Kate writes her a letter explaining that she's becoming increasingly disturbed and that she plans to sell her house. When she arrives at the house, Lauren finds more disturbing drawings and writings about the Slender Man, revealing that he has been tormenting Kate and driving her insane with paranoia.

After hearing a woman's scream in the distance, as well as seeing a written prompt to go to a radio tower miles away, Lauren sets off into the forest herself to search for her friend.

As she makes her way to the tower, Lauren too encounters the Slender Man, who torments and stalks her exactly as he did Kate. If caught, it's implied that he either kills her or brainwashes her to be another one of his proxies. She also encounters a masked, brainwashed Kate, who chases and beats her to death if she catches her. The two work together several times in hounding Lauren.

Just before she reaches the tower, Lauren is caught in a forest fire and must escape it, as well as an especially-aggressive Slender Man, who started it and is heavily implied to have murdered others with similar fires, as Lauren saw newspapers covering deadly fires along the way. Upon reaching the tower and locking herself inside, Lauren finds the burnt remains of a man, as well as a recording of him stating that he's performing self-immolation in order to help destroy the monster.

No matter what ending Lauren endures, it never ends well for her; she is either trapped and hunted down by Slendy and/or his proxies, killed and dragged away by an unmasked Kate, or simply caught by the Slender Man. The monster's minimum victim count by the end is at least one direct murder, one who he causes to be Driven to Suicide, and two cases of irreversible Mind Rape. On top of this, his victim count is almost certainly much greater, and he seems to have been stalking the two protagonists since their childhood. Toying with his prey before he inevitably murders or enslaves them, Slender Man is undeniably and unrelentingly evil throughout his tenure as the entity driving the Cosmic Horror Story of the two games.

As a former Slenderverse aficionado myself, i'll have to give this Slender Man a [tdown], he was never portrayed as some sort of ultimate evil because we never get to know exactly what he wants. Also, he didn't directly torment Katie like you said, this is officially called "Slender Sickness", when a person ends up obsessing over him as a side-effect of his presence.

[down] And i was referring to the drawings and writings...

I was referring to the fact that he was stalking them, which is indisputably a form of psychological torture.

[tdown] Slenderman. In those games he is still too enigmatic and his motives are too unknown to classify him as a CM.

[tdown] Slender Man, not because he isn't heinous enough, but because he is way to enigmatic and his motivation, personality, or even goals is barely elaborated on.

[tdown] Slenderman, the whole point of his character is that he is a Humanoid Abomination that can't really be understood. Is like saying that Cthullu is a CM.

No to Slenderman, no information about it is concrete in the slightest other than its appearance, that it causes mental trauma, makes proxies and kills people, which doesn't mean it has agency by itself.

Another version of Slenderman which is utterly horrible yet an utter cipher thanks to purposeful lack of information on it. No.

[down] That sounds... quite possible.

@Scraggle I am not positive if it was necessarily voted on but it was decided that there wasn't enough concrete information on it once before or more. It was likely voted down before though.
