Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up][up][up][up] Except Lotso was never a hero, he just wasn't evil. He used to be a decent person with sympathetic traits but that's not the same as being a hero. Anyway, I need to think about Simula some more I'm not sure about her.

So uh I was looking through character pages in The Mighty Thor and has this for Malekith the accusred (comic version).

  • Freudian Excuse: Lost his brothers and uncles to war, betrayed by his mother and sold for food, spent his childhood as a corpse burner burning the dead and half dead bodies of fellow dark elf soldiers. When he completed apprenticeship in wizardry he rejected his master's proposal to use his powers for good and end the wars and instead crusades to keep war going forever, because he can't see an identity without it.

I tried looking for discussion but couldn't find anything since MCU Malekith was messing up the search results. Some thoughts from anyone familiar ?

43, please add that to the Drafts.

As for Malekith, I'm not sure, but I THINK it was Lighty who wrote up Malekith.

I'm gonna be busy today, so i guess this will be my only candidate. Not a KR candidate considering i have 0 of them [lol]. Again, i'm friends with Word of God.

What is the setting? Tales From The Spiders Web is a webseries following the story of four boys: David, Jesse, Kyle and Simon, the group, together they created the channel for the purpose of documenting their lives, but oh oh, a faceless figure begins appearing in their videos, and with him comes three more individuals to make their lives a living hell: Mr. Plastic, Sage and our candidate, the brutal and cruel Clowny.

Who is Clowny? Also know as CL 4 R 1 TY and F 1 R 3, Clowny is a mysterious masked man targeting mainly David himself, and differs from Plastic and Sage in the fact that he claims to not serve the faceless figure. Sage, not a saint himself, refers to Clowny as "thing" rather than a person. Clowny's behavior is initially limited to hacking and toying with David's mind. Taking control of David's Ask.fm account, Clowny responds a question with the answer "was WH 1 TE M 34 T", showing a gif of him with bloody hands, confirming that he was responsible for murdering and devouring Madison White, Kyle's girlfriend.

Creating a channel to mess with David even more, Clowny took the opportunity to visit David's underage friend, Chance, and stab him to death and eat parts of his body, as we see in one of his videos, with Clowny stabbing his body in a bathtub, which is out of view; Clowny then proceeded to burn the house down, burning Chance's parents alive; Clowny made one single comment about the incident: FR 13 D M 34 T; G 00 DBY 3 CH 4 NC 3 LL 0 R. In one of his next apperance, Clowny destroyed Kyle's life once again, devouring one more person in a bathtub, which was revealed to be Mike Glendower, Kyle's relative, waving at the camera and washing his hands, preparing to dispose of the body. The nickname Clowny gave to Mike was R 04 ST 3 D M 34 T. Eventually, Clowny managed to capture David himself, and tortured the guy for a long time before setting him free just so he could torture him even more.

Mitigating Factors? Like said before, Clowny says that the faceless figure has no control over his actions, as confirmed by Word of God, he only serves as his attack dog because he likes it, he likes to play with what he calls "meat", or "people", making him wayyyy more heinous than Sage or Mr. Plastic, both of which never even killed a person as far we know, Acting more like a depraved, cannibalistic Serial Killer than just a mere servant.

Conclusion? You decide.

In regards to Brother EYE, I should also mention that I forgot to mention that it also hates flesh. Haven't read the Batman Beyond sequel to it, but it seems that Brother EYE doesn't get any more nuanced in it, illustrating that the reason it mutilated heroes was for the psychological warfare aspect.

[tup] Clowny

It’s time for another Jackie/Lighty crossover! This time we’re both taking a look at the Iczer OVA series by Toshiki Hirano.

What Is the Work?

Fight! Iczer-One is the first of three OVA series based on a serial manga from a Hentai magazine (the series isn’t Hentai btw just making that clear for everyone), released in 1985. This is also the darkest of the OVAs, containing more horrific imagery and somber themes than its sequels. The OVA combines elements of horror, tokusatsu, and yuri.

Nagisa Kano is an ordinary high school girl who keeps seeing a blond woman following her everywhere. Suddenly, close acquaintances start turning into grotesque tentacle aliens that try to kill her. The blond woman is later revealed to be the titular Iczer-1, an alien android designed to protect the world from an alien species called the Cthulhu (no relation), a species of all female aliens who plan to conquer the world. It’s up to Iczer-1 and Nagisa to stop these aliens and save the world’s population from destruction.

And who’s the one behind this fiendish plot?

Who Is she?

Big Gold (which sounds like a character from Friday) is the one behind the Cthulhu race’s plan to take over the world, and the Big Bad of the first series. Despite being female, she's voiced by the late, male Kaneto Shiozawa.

She and Iczer-1 are two halves of an ancient alien machine meant to grant one’s wishes. BG represented Desire, while Iczer represented Conscience. Both are physical manifestations of the machine, and the two have moral agency.

What has she done?

In the past, the Cthulhu’s spaceship was passing through space. The species’ matriarch thinks about how her race is in despair, and that her race would die in space and never find a new home. Wishing for a way to save her race, Big Gold comes along and grants her wish, since the ship was close to the machine. The matriarch's wish is granted, but not the way the she wanted. BG uses her powers to remake the race into something worse. She had changed a once idyllic society into a fascist nightmare, and had mutated the once benign aliens into their current parasitic forms. She made the matriarch into her slave, renaming her Sir Violet and making her sound like a man.

BG uses the Cthulhu race to fulfill her desire to eradicate humanity and take the world for herself without damaging it in an open war. Giving orders to Sir Violet, she has him send out their army of Vedim and Delvittse parasite aliens to infest and replace humans across the world. They do this to thousands of humans, including Nagisa's parents and classmates. She later sends down Cobalt and her mecha Delos Theta to fight against the human military, hoping to also use her to flush out Iczer-1 and destroy her before she can unite with her partner. Too late, since Iczer-1 teams up with Nagisa and the two kill Cobalt. It’s at this point when a spaceship from earth is sent into space containing a ranked Captain and his soldiers; their mission is to stop the Cthulhu themselves.

The second episode starts with BG launching her battle station onto earth: a black pyramid that causes widespread destruction upon landing. Using her energy, BG helps Sir Violet create Iczer-2, an evil clone of Iczer-1 created to kill her. As the days go by, the Vedim and Delvittse aliens start to spread, soon taking over military soldiers, using their resources and weapons to lay waste onto most of the Earth's civilization, turning the world into an apocalyptic wasteland.

When Iczer-1 defeats 2 in a mech battle, the latter returns to the Cthulhu battle station to recharge. Sir Violet apologizes to BG for the mistake, but due to BG not wanting to give out any more excuses, she kills him with a smile on her face, which causes Violet to revert back to her original personality. With Sir Violet now dead, BG decides to head to earth herself to defeat Iczer-1 and Nagisa.

After Iczer-2 captures Nagisa and brings her onboard the ship, BG shows up and reveals her backstory to Nagisa, then decides to take her life, since she’s the one giving Iczer-1 her powers. But when Iczer-2 chimes in to take Nagisa for herself, BG complies, allowing her to do whatever she wants with her; this leads to 2 brainwashing Nagisa and has Iczer-1 kill her, which leads to 1 killing 2 with the power of Nagisa’s soul absorbing into her, which gave her an extra boost in power.

BG then teleports to the soldiers’ spaceship and blows it up, killing loads of people. Afterwards, BG gives a mighty evil laugh as she looks at the Earth, downright proud of the fiery destruction she has brought upon it. After Iczer-1 kills 2, BG teleports her to her room (she tells her that she can’t comprehend Nagisa’s passion and happiness), where the two try to kill each other. BG transforms into her true form; that of a giant yellow explosion monster. Iczer immediately defeats her, which causes Iczer to easily combine with GB and obtain her powers.

And thus the first OVA ends with Iczer pressing the Reset Button on Nagisa’s life before the arrival of BG, returning it, and the world, back to normal. Iczer herself must go because she must watch over the Cthulhu race.

Redeeming Qualities?

None. While she was born from a machine and represented the idea of desire, the act of desire is not entirely an evil concept. She also has a clear, sadistic personality, as she gets sick enjoyment out of her carnage. Ultimately, she brings about other people’s desires; I think of her as a Jackass Genie.

So in a nutshell, she does have moral agency, just like her counterpart and second half Iczer-1.

Heinousness?

As the main villain, she’s easily the worst figure. All the other villains from the first OVA don’t compare to her level of destruction, and they all have a redeeming quality anyway.

Conclusion

I think she’s a keeper. Lighty will present the other villains from the two OVA sequels.

Yes to Big Gold, whatever, sure to Clowny, gonna go with a cautious nay to Shimura, and no, Malekith's qualfications are not affected. He's an easy keeper.

Now, then...

What's the Work?

Iczelion is a two episode OVA, that is the final sequel to Iczer and takes place years later with a new cast. The Iczelion are a force throughout the universe who defend their worlds, ending with a girl named Kai Nagisa made into the newest one, as Earth is facing a very, very deadly threat that she is warned of when the android Iczel arrives...the forces of Geas, led by the twisted siblings Cross and Chaos.

Who are Cross and Chaos?

The Geas, a pair of ruthless, twisted androids who are some of the last remaining creations of Big Gold. Cross is the brawn and Chaos is the brain behind Geas, a deadly, feared robot army that makes its reputation by traveling from world to world, stealing the resources and exterminating every living things there. The first scene of the OVA is them wiping out all life on a planet, leaving its Iczelion defender for last. Cross proceeds to mock her for her defeat before brutally torturing her to death, cackling "die" all the while.

Iczel manages to flee to earth where it bonds to Nagisa, warning her about the coming of the siblings. Cross and Chaos arrive on earth and decide to savor the treat, locating Nagisa. Chaos states he will pick the targets and asks Chaos to amuse him by 'taking them apart. Piece by piece.' Nagisa is confronted by Cross, who proceeds to try to torture her to death, where it is revealed other girls have become Iczelions and come to Nagisa's aid. A pitched battle ensues, Cross sadistically trying to kill them all until she's 'bored'. Chaos arrives to call her off so he can watch his pet androids, the Voids, destroy the others, and ravage the earth to kill all they can. Cross reluctantly pulls out.

Cross eventually heads back, to Chaos's amusement, as the girls fight the powerful Voids. Cross corners Nagisa in her school and attacks, trying to slaughter all the innocent schoolgirls there as well. Cross then challenges Nagisa, sadistically cutting one of the other girls, gloating that she gains the most energy from the fear of others and making it clear she plans to butcher all the civilians present should Nagisa not fight her. Nagisa ...Cross attacks with zero care for collateral damage, forcing Nagisa to take the fight into the sky. Cross is overwhelmed by Nagisa's new power, with Nagisa seizing her and suplexing her into the roof, smashing her head apart, as the Iczelions then destroy the Voids before they can destroy the cities.

Chaos is left stunned at Cross's death and the Voids...only to gloat how "wonderful" it is...and rallies all of the Geas to attack, wipe out the Iczelions and destroy earth. The series ends with the girls flying into battle, confident of victory against Chaos at last...unfortunately, this is where the OVA ends, but with a rare positive Bolivian Army Ending as it's clear they'll destroy Geas and take Chaos down.

Mitigating Qualities?

Heinousness....now, Big Gold certainly sets the franchise standard, but Cross and Chaos have the blood of billions on their hands, traveling from world to world and exterminating them, not only for resources but for laughs, too. They're sadistic as hell, torturing and tormenting their victims to the end, and easily go above the baseline, sticking out enough for the relative standard, too.

Regarding mitigating qualities? They have no redeeming features at all. Cross is far more brusque and brash than her brother, vicious and savage while Chaos is calm and reserved, but equally as depraved as his sister, requesting she murder her victims slowly for his viewing pleasure. If that weren't enough, the two function as partners, but when Cross is killed, Chaos looks shocked, saying "Sister Cross is dead? The Voids, too?" He then...proceeds to laugh, going "Wonderful! What power, Iczelions!" And then unleashes his full army, so no love lost between the two.

And like with any other android in series, they have full agency.

Conclusion?

I'd say easy keeps.

Yes to Big Gold, and another aye to Cross and Chaos whom I've been anticipating... now, I'm going to be out for today so I'd like to post a quick Michael Gough candidate (of which Lighty will have a few more) before I get out.

What's the setting?

Satan's Slave (no relation to the two Indonesian films under the name of "Satan's Slaves") is a 1976 horror film that — like To the Devil a Daughter and The Devil's Rain before it from me — was obviously trying to cash in on the religious horror craze going on at the time with the release of films like The Exorcist. Now, premise is, a young woman named Catherine Yorke who has odd dreams and feelings she regards as premonitions is driving out to London to see her uncle... only for her parents to crash the car on the way there, killing her mother. When Catherine's father urges Catherine to get help? The car explodes — leaving a traumatized Catherine in the care of her extended family where bizarre things start to happen that can't be dismissed as "shock." There's Francis, her uncle's secretary with a few secrets of her own, John Yorke, Catherine's cousin who seems to have a romantic fixation on her... and, of course, her uncle: Alexander Yorke, played by Michael Gough.

Who is Alexander Yorke? What has he done?

Alright, so... getting to the twist right away so this EP isn't just "spooky things happen with little explanation until the last fifteen minutes?" Alexander Yorke is actually the head of a Satanic coven which he runs with John, with women stripped and routinely sacrificed screaming to his dark master by them. As soon as Catherine comes into Alexander's clutches, she starts having dreams and visions of Alexander's victims horribly tortured with branding irons and whips before they're sacrificed. Alexander blames this on the shock of the car accident and keeps Catherine placid with sedatives under the assurance he's a doctor as Catherine starts to notice funny things with John as well. Francis eventually gets tired of playing secret with Catherine and reveals to Catherine the truth.

Catherine? Is actually the direct descendant of a powerful witch, Carmilla Yorke, who died at the age of twenty — the age Catherine will be tomorrow. Alexander is obsessed with taking that power, using for his own and intent on sacrificing Catherine as he only surefire way of bringing Carmilla back to life... it's previously explored that Alexander brutally murdered his own wife to this end while forcing a young John to watch, twisting his own son into a psychotic murderer of his own, one Alexander shows no care for in the current day as he coldly threatens to kill John himself if he ever proves to slip. Alexander forces Catherine's suspicious boyfriend to jump off a building to his death under Satanic influence and eventually tries to drag out Catherine to be burned alive. Catherine manages to escape, killing John with a nail file and running out in terror into the woods... only to bump into her father, who reassures her everything that's happened has simply been a hallucination caused by a bump to the head, further bolstered when Alexander walks into the room seemingly normal and out of his red robes...

...and then he shows Catherine the dead body of his son to terrorize her again, nothing less than proud that Catherine managed to murder John in such an expertly horrible fashion before remarking that she's got a touch of Carmilla in her. Alexander surrounds Catherine with her followers where even her father is revealed as a member of the cult... and end movie.

Any mitigating factors?

No. No care for Catherine or John or his wife or anybody. Everybody's simply a means to an end for him and his goal is explicitly that of just the pursuit of eternal power. I think he comes over the standard too — lots of horrible sacrifice seen either in flashback or Catherine's visions, murdered his own wife, corrupted and threatens to murder his own son, wants to sacrifice his own niece by burning her alive and makes her boyfriend kill himself, etc. There's a lot of nice vile flourishes there that bring him above many other generic Satanist cult leaders of the time, so I think he can pass.

Conclusion?

Keep him. Kind of jarring seeing the Tim Burton Alfred being an evil Satanist, but then again, sort of lacks the punch when you've already had Count Dooku and Mermaid Man fill the place prior.

Thoughts?

And on THAT note....

What's the work?

Horror Hospital is a British horror/comedy (ostensibly, so they say, there ain't much comedy in this movie) starring...Michael Gough as Dr. Christian Storm. Now, our heroes are a group of young hippie musicians traveling the countryside, and end up being sent to a 'health factory' called Brittlehurst manor, meeting up with a young woman traveling to meet her long lost aunt. Now...the manor? is home to Dr. Christian Storm, a handicapped doctor there to help those who arrive, but his intentions...are far more sinister.

Who is Christian Storm?

Years ago, Storm was a brilliant scientist obsessed with discovering the secrets of human behavior. This entailed lobotomies. Lots and lots of lobotomies, turning people into zombie slaves to be used and disposed of. When Stalin rose, Storm was forced to go underground, turning to his partner in crime, a woman named 'Aunt Harris' who ran a brothel. Storm had her smuggle in young women to be turned over to him to experiment on and lobotomize, creating his own little 'zoo,' but he was never able to get it quite right, to his consternation. Things went wrong when a thief arrived and accidentally set fire to the place, killing his experiments and scarring Storm horribly. Storm murdered the thief later and relying on his connection with Harris, set up Brittlehurst to continue his experiments. In Brittlehurst? People, especially traveling hippies end up abducted and tortured, lobotomized and converted to slaves...especially young women who Storm has a lecherous fondness for. When the film opens, it's revealed Storm has also outfitted his expensive Rolls Royce with...a blade and basket on the side, allowing him to drive down and decapitate escapees whose heads fall in the basket, with...a great deal falling prey to this.

Now, Harris is having serious misgivings and threatens to leave Storm, claiming she'll never help him with another surgery. Storm mocks her, saying she's too old to run another brothel, but when Harris's pangs of conscience grow too great, Storm murders her with his bare hands. Finally, Storm has the young heroes captured and explains everything he plans to do before having them sent away as he prepares to operate. They manage to escape, gaining the help of Storm's dwarf butler Frederick who is sick of Storm's abuses, and rescue one of the women...the other, however is taken to Storm's chambers where he attempts to rape her, only to furiously beat her to death with his cane at her resistance. Storm escapes as the others arrive after fighting through his zombie slaves, revealing his true barely-human form underneath the masks. They manage to get into Storm's own Rolls Royce and run him down, decapitating him and throwing his corpse and head into the nearby bog, leaving the mansion for good...though the end implies Storm is returning and alive. Somehow.

Heinousness?

Only main villain and sets it fierce, and a lot of murder, torture and lobotomies to create slaves, that're well over the baseline. The movie plays everything dead straight with his actions, so I've got no idea what was meant to be that funny. Bits are campy, sure, but Storm is played for genuine horror.

Mitigating Qualities?

God god no. He's an egomaniac, a sadist and has no loyalty or affection for anyone or anything. Easy pass.

Conclusion?

As Scraggle said...hard to imagine kindly old Alfred this depraved, but he was a major British horror star known for playing villains before he signed up as our favorite Butler. But as far as I'm concerned, this one is a Gough.
