Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Richie and [tup] the Darkling.

It's another funny coincidence, cuz just yesterday I was wondering if SLJ, in all his career and the villains he played ever had a CM under his belt.

[up]He already has 2. This is his 3rd.

He was Mr Barron from Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Logan from the film Arena.

Easy yes to Proctor (ironic because Tempus also used the "let's make America great again" thing verbatim in the Presidential episodes... only he did it decades before Trump) and Darkling.

I have a question, Stargate Origins hasn't been discussed has it? I don't believe it has been.

[up] I was thinking about seeing it to determine if anybody does count. It is very Indiana Jones like in appearance. So I will have to see.

Not yet, but on that note...have a candidate from Stargate Sg-1

What's the work?

A very, very long-running Sci Fi series based off a Roland Emmerich Sci fi series...Stargate concerns a military team uncovering the 'Stargate'...a mystical gateway through time and space that leads them to Abydos, an alien world with people taken from ancient earth. Long ago, earth was ruled as part of the Goa'uld emprie. The goa-uld are a technologically advanced race of parasites who pretend to be gods through their hosts. Now, Stargate centers around the team SG-1 protecting their world and others from the threat of the Goa-uld and their ruling class, the System Lords...one such Lord is the subject of today's EP. Meet System Lord Nirrti.

Who is Nirrti and what's she done?

Nirrti is a powerful System Lord who's known by one very unique trait: her obsession with science. Seeking to create the perfect host, Nirrti is seen as a bit of an oddity by her fellow System Lords, and an utter nightmare by those under her rule for good reason. Now, the Goa'uld spend a lot of time fighting among themselves, but will bandy together against a common enemy. Nirrti has little interest in military might or political bickering. When the Goa'uld ruled Earth, Nirrti was fascinated by human physiology and began to experiment on them to 'perfect' them...these led to devastating casualties among her human slave populations. To avoid running out, she began to experiment on slave populations of her fellow System Lords without permission....infuriated, two System Lords lobbied to ahve Nirrti stripped of her status. Not caring, Nirrti now had no real problem in her personal galactic holdings to continue her horrific experiments.

After the death of Goa'uld Emperor Ra in the film, Nirrti retook her old position. We first see her handiwork in an early episode when SG-1 come to a planet called Hanka. As part of her experiments, Nirrti has exterminated the population of the planet save for a little girl....who Nirrti has implanted with a bomb to destroy Earth's stargate on the other side and end the threat SG-1 poses. The girl was thankfully saved and adopted by SG-1's medic.

Now, in season 2, Nirrti appears for the first time. Arriving alongside fellow System Lords Cronus and Yu as part of a peace treaty negotiation with Earth and the Asgard, a race who are opposed to the Goa'uld, Nirrti is revealed to have coveted Cronus's holdings and attempts to assassinate Cronus, framing SG-1 member Teal'c for the assault (Teal'c is a Jaffa, a species that serves the Goa'uld, who made a major Heel–Face Turn in the pilot...and he's known to hate Cronus, who murdered Teal'c's own father). This will kill the peace treaty, result in the Goa'uld invading earth and devastating both so Nirrti can kick back, seize Cronus's holdings and enjoy all the experimenting she can get away with there. Thankfully, her plots are exposed and Nirrti is captured by Cronus, dragged off as his prisoner....

Several years later, Cronus is killed and Nirrti escapes prison...finding out Cassandra, the only survivor of Hanka is still alive, Nirrti wants to get ahold of her and potentially dissect her for research value. Cassandra ends up sick and only Nirrti can save her. In return for her help, SG-1 agrees to let her go free, albeit without any samples from Cassandra's blood. Nirrti is annoyed she has to begin her research over and subtly mocks hero Colonel O'Neil for knuckling over to her demands, with the implication she's not through.

In her final episode, a team is exploring planet P 3 X-367...finding a devastated city with one weakened survivor. The man, Alebran, is brought to SG-1, where he reveals Nirrti experimented on his people and dies when his body turns to water. Turns out Nirrti hasn't given up on creating her perfect host and has resorted to genetic manipulation. Turns out Nirrti is worshiped on the planet as she was the one to save them from a plague...that she, of course, was the one to unleash. Some of the natives have been horrifically deformed by her, but have developed psychic powers as a result. Nirrit plays on their loyalty while killing many of them in her experiments, also torturing members of SG-1, who feel very responsible due to having let Nirrti go the last time. Finally, convincing the leader of her followers, Wodan, about Nirrti's true intentions, Wodan reads Nirrti's mind to discover it's true. The heroes try to convince Wodan to show mercy so they can force Nirrti to fix his people but Wodan has already gotten all her knowledge from her mind. He proceeds to telekinetically snap the terrified System Lord's neck, killing Nirrti for good. Wodan reveals they intend to heal their people with her devices and destroy said technology. SG-1 wisely decide not to push them on this and quickly leave, Nirrti completely unlamented by anyone.

Mitigating Qualities?

Nirrti is For Science! incarnate and the token Mad Scientist of the Goa'uld. She lacks any minor redeeming qualities some of her fellow System Lords have. Everything about her is cold, sociopathic pragmatism. She does heal Cassandra at one point, but this is only because AG-1 promises her safe passage out of earth, which she uses to again be as evil as humanly possible. Even her attempt to start a whole war between earth and the Goa'uld is seen as pretty obnoxious at best by two fellow System Lords and most Goa'uld will at least join together to protect the Empire itself rather than undermine it within to grab a fellow System Lord's turf.

Heinousness?

Okay, so we have Anubis as probably the one who sets the standard, Anubis being the Big Bad of seasons 6-8, a powerful System Lord exiled for crimes even other Goa'uld found a bit much, who wipes out the life on entire planets and seeks to exterminate all life to become a god. He is, however, a nearly godlike being with the strongest fleet in series, and Nirrti compares to her fellow System Lords quite well, having vastly more horrible death and regularly exterminating entire populations for her experiments. System Lords like Apophis, Heru'ur, Cronus and Yu are considerably lower in bodycount despite being vastly more powerful militarily than Nirrti. Add the Mad Scientist vibe to her, which is quite unique and lends a nastier flavor to her crimes (Heru'ur will vaporize you. Nirrti will torture you to death and kill everything you love with a plague). I'd say Nirrti passes the standard, especially for a ten season show.

Conclusion?

I'd give Nirrti a keep.

I'd like to nominate The Joker from the Teen Titans fanfic Joker's Wild. His grand entrance into Jump City has him killing over a hundred people with Smilex on live TV. Since Joker doesn't like that others have tried to kill Robin, he gradually offs the villains of Jump City before taking over. Taking from his DCAU counterpart, The Joker kidnaps and brainwashes Beast Boy into becoming a mini-me. Plotting for a big finale, Joker tries to detonate a plutonium bomb in Jump City, and rigs the suburbs with massive explosives to catch those escaping from the nuclear bomb.

Yes to Nirrti definitely, which btw why did it take all this time to EP her? I remember this series well and she is as heinous as the EP suggests.

@miraculous I have seen all of the series aside from Origins and Universe. As far as I remember nobody else counts in either SG 1 or in Atlantis. MAYBE somebody counts in Universe but I don't think it has any very heinous villains in it at all, I haven't seen it but I have read about it.
