Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I am gonna say one thing: I think Goeth should have a long writeup, due to being the main baddie of a 3-hour movie, but not 306 words long.

As for new EP's? I have one or two Golden Age comic ones I initially wrote off but have been bugging me ever since, I can get those up in a couple hours.

[up]X5 I mean for guys who do a lot. A 300 word write-up is fine but no way that version of Amoen Goeth should have a write-up nearly as Big as these [up]X3 psychos.

That new entry for Goeth looks much better. Especially without the distracting potholes.

On the subject of entries that could be re-written, are there any entries that anyone feels are too short? For me, there are the villains listed in The Night Angel Trilogy. Hu Gibbert's is fine, but the latter two's entries are both only three lines long, and read rather awkwardly.

Why so serious?

Fish was definately not insane, he knew very well what he was doing, someone trying to portray him as a sympathetic individual makes me genuinely angry, if Karla Homolka wasn't enough. Anyway, EF time.

What is the setting? ATM is a 2012 thriller film centering around the story of three friends: David, Emily, Corey, as they are being terrorized by a hooded figure while trapped in an ATM.

Who is The Killer? This unnamed man appropriatelly called The Killer is a genius Serial Killer and strategist who carefully plans out his killing sprees, always leaving a person alive to take the fall for his crimes. He is also emotionless enough to not speak due to his Lack of Empathy, and also because no one will recognize his voice. Introduced drawing complex diagrams related to his murder plans, the killer approaches the three outside the ATM, making they believe that he was a robber. The killer proved them wrong by murdering a random pedestrian walking his dog purely For the Evulz. To torment them even further, the killer cut off the ATM's heater system, giving them the Sadistic Choice of either freezing or going outside, both of which would result in their deaths. In attempt to negotiate with the killer, they offer him money and valuables. David escaped from the ATM but discovered a little bit too late that his car's wires had been cut, forcing him to return. When a guard is alerted of the killer's presence, he beats him to death with a tire iron in front of the three.

After they accidently kill a janitor wearing a similar coat to that of the killer's (this was very likely another of one his plans), Corey goes out to confront him but gets stabbed almost to death. To finish Corey off, the killer fills the ATM booth with cold water, killing Corey with a combination of blood loss and hypothermia. After Emily breaks her neck and dies, the killer tricks David into burning the guard's corpse with a molotov cocktail, alarming the police, who arrest David while the real perpetrator silently watches among the crowd of people. To confirm that David would get charged with the murders, the killer planted false evidence against him and his friends, making police believe that they were the robbers, and was careful to not appear in security footage. Returning to his home, we see the killer planning even more attacks on other ATM booths, a mini-mart and a farm house.

Mitigating Factors? Zero excuses.

Conclusion? [tup], this guy might be one of the smartest, realistic fictional murderers in recent media.

I don't think many intelligent, practical killers would do something like murder a random person and their dog in public for shits and giggles, but that's neither here nor there. Yea to the killer.

Having seen ATM a while back, I genuinely don't know about the killer, both because he doesn't say anything and because he has a small body count.

Also abstaining on the killer.

Another thing to note is as far as I can tell, the closest Fish has got to having a CM incarnation was an evil spirit that possesed him.

Clown-Face: Moruth-Doole.

Killer seems heinous enough—barely (the fact that he's planning another murder(s) is enough)—but does he have any personality?

Here's Iselda, since it's going with the Comics split and not the usual batch:

  • Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins: Iselda is a higher-up within the criminal organization, The Myriad. Wishing to advance further in the ranks, Iselda attempts to take control of the swamp port city, Stillben, away from a rival criminal gang, The Clasp. Iselda has Zeth, an alchemist living within Stillben, brew a dangerous poison, Aqua Caedes, and have it pollute the swamp, sending infants and ill people who live within the swamp's vicinity into a vegetative state. Iselda then has Zeth trick the residents of Stillben into believing that it's a curse that can be appeased by sacrificing those who were affected by the poison to the shark-speakers. After fleeing from the party during their first confrontation, Iselda makes a plan to kidnap Vax and use him as bait for the rest of the party, intending to use his life as a bargaining chip to get the party to join The Myriad. During Vax's escape, he finds out that Iselda is using the souls of those who fell victim to Aqua Caedes as ingredients for a curse to kill every person who came into contact with the swamp water around Stillben in an attempt to wipe out its entire population.

@Beast good ol' HABIT, interestingly, one of my planned C Ms is an apparent cult leader played by the same actor who portrayed Evan, HABIT's main vessel.

@ACW We see that he is a sadist, he killed that innocent dogwalker just to frighten David, Corey and Emily.

Hmm, in that case, I'll give a VERY slight [tup] for him. So he's got what 3-4 deliberate murders, framing people, and general dickishness (plus planning future attacks)? Yeah, that's JUST over the baseline.

[up]Late to mention this but Moruth is actually not the only rapist CM in Star Wars. Lord Cronal had his daughter Gang raped and he participated in it. He is however the only Serial Rapist CM as Cronal only has one victim.

Having seen ATM, no to the killer. What the EP fails to mention is that he’s barely characterized, certainly nowhere near enough for this trope.

[down][down] That’s giving him way more credit than the film portrays. We learn next to nothing about him and he just comes across as a generic horror “force of bad”.

New proposal, from Super-American.

Who's the candidate?

Herr Largo, a hunchbacked Nazi agent out to stop Super-American's meddling.

What does he do?

We first meet Largo when he's captured the son of Super-American's scientist ally to get him to spill the beans on where our hero's headquarters are located. Being weak and frail, Largo has his more able-bodied henchmen torture the young man, who breaks when his eye is almost put out. The torture and guilt over selling out his country breaks the man, who is taken to a holding cell pleading to die.

Largo and his men then go to the military base where Super-American resides, masquerading as lost travellers. Taking the guards by surprise, the Nazis kill them and sneak onto the base. They then attack the laboratory, gunning down the aforementioned scientist. Before he dies, the scientist summons Super-American, whom Largo knocks out with a poison gas. He then takes our hero's suit, which is the source of his power.

So, what does Largo intend to do with his newfound powers? Why, a land invasion of America, of course! Ordering an army shipped in from Germany, Largo orders them to attack New York City, hoping to topple the US in a day's time. During this invasion, we see the bombing raids kill soldier and civilian alike. Largo himself uses his Super-Strength to personally destroy 23 airplanes, killing the pilots. At about this time, Super-American manages to topple Largo's home base and trick the madman into returning. He manages to knock Largo out with the same gas, thwart the invasion and deliver the leaders to the President for arrest.

Heinousness?

His only real competition is the already-listed Tyrannus, who does things like hold Congress hostage, destroy a dam to flood a town as a distraction, lead his own land invasion of the US, bomb a factory with his own soldiers inside and sell out his bosses to escape.

Now, this is worse than what Largo does, but there's a pretty big resource difference. Tyrannus is the Number Two of a dictatorship, with armies backing him, while Largo is one Nazi agent with a few henchmen who only gets an army in the last act of the issue. I have no doubt he'd pull similar crap to Tyrannus if he had the resources.

Mitigating factors?

None, he's just a sadistic Nazi.

Verdict?

[tup]
