Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Walden and the Funny Man if he's played seriously, as a lot of those deaths do sound rather goofy.

Acw : There seems to be an error in the write-up in Kamen Rider Fourze. It should be lem kannagi not rem kannagi. The l is pronounced as r and the official sources like wikipedia say its Lem kannagi.

[tup]Walden and Funnyman.

CONGRATULATIONS! You have joined me in becoming an uncle. You in for some interesting times, I tell you.

Hopefully neither of us will drive our respective nephews to the dark side by virtue of fearing the darkness in their hearts.

[tup] for Funny Man and Walden.

I also have a rec.

What is the work?

Bring Him Home. A web published original short story set in 1867.

Who are they?

The Big Bad, Alfred.

What have they done?

Alfred is the owner of a factory that uses child slave labor. He has the children abducted and forced into horrible working conditions. Henry, one of the main characters, mentions that the factory makes use of hundreds of child slaves, including Henry's son Harry. The children are dangerously thin from being severely underfed and their fingers were bleeding from working on the machines. They are even chained together to prevent them from escaping.

When Alfred gets news of the rebellion getting closer to him, he sends for a sadistic enforcer working for a group called "the Pinkertons" to stop any of them from taking any of the children back. The Pinkerton is responsible for killing Oliver and his men for attempting to get into the factory and rescuing the children.

A man named Jack goes after him when he sees him running to his office while hearing the gunshots. When is cornered, he only expresses fear that he will get killed and surrenders only out of cowardice. Unfortunately for him, Jack doesn't care.

Freudian Excuse or mitigating factors?

Nothing. The most you could say about his motives is that he's a greedy bastard wanting to make a profit.

Heinous standard?

He pretty much sets the bar in this story. His actions are always portrayed in a negative light and he is consistently portrayed as irredeemable.

Final verdict?

I would say yes, but I will leave it to you. What do you guys think?

Yes to Walden... I tried watching Funny Man a while back. I couldn't get any farther than half an hour in. The movie was goddamned terrible.

By the way, anyone mind if I reserve Death Cure for discussion? I'm interested in seeing if its candidate goes through any Adaptational Villainy.

Nobody counts in the books — or at least the first trilogy — if anyone's interested. Gally's got a trove of disqualifiers and ends up redeemed by the third book, and everyone from WCKD genuinely is a Well-Intentioned Extremist.

I'll jot my name down there.

@ Scraggle... the big problem with Funny Man is none of the actors seem to be enjoying themselves at all. Add in the 90's B-Horror film cheese and it was pretty trash.

[tup] for Alfred.

So, Round #2 of discussing candidates that were missed from last year. This time I'll be covering the absurdly boring disaster movie Geostorm. The movie takes place some years in the future, where a giant space station known as Dutch Boy, controls various climate-controlling satellites. And in this film, the reason behind all the weather disasters is actually not because of "global warming" or the wrath of Mother Nature. Instead, the culprit is just a power-hungry villain.

Who Is He?

Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom is the Big Bad of the film and the one secretly behind Dutch Boy going haywire.

What Has He Done?

Sometime between the three year Time Skip, Dekkom hired Duncan, one of the engineers on Dutch Boy, to sabotage the station. First, he sabotages a satellite, causing it to freeze an entire village over the Middle East, killing 300 people. After a Cabinet meeting, Dekkom suggests for Jake Lawson to fix all of the problems on Dutch Boy and tells Max, Jake's brother, to convince him to head back into space. Sometime later, when an engineer named Habib Makmoud discovers information about the incident, Duncan locks him inside a corridor before the airlock opens and he's thrust into outer space. A couple days later, another satellite malfunctions, causing a series of underground gas explosions that destroy a portion of Hong Kong. Back on Earth, Dekkom blocks the satcom access so that Max can't examine the Dutch Boy satellites remotely. The sabotaging continues, and while Jake and various other engineers onboard Dutch Boy try to examine the Hong Kong satellite, the mechnical arm holding said satellite goes haywire and nearly kills several engineers.

Back on Earth, one of Dekkom's henchmen kill Cheng Long, another scientist who worked on the Dutch Boy satellites, after he discovered that someone is intentionally trying to cause the disasters. Soon after, dozens of other satellites malfunction, creating weather disasters in Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro, before Duncan initiates the self-destruct controls for Dutch Boy. Shortly afterwards, Dekkom tries to kill Max after he suspects the President is behind the malfunctions. Max and his girlfriend Sarah kidnap the President in order to save him from Dekkom (I will explain this under the Freudian Excuse part). While this all happens, tornados strike Mumbai, a vicious lightning storm starts tearing apart Orlando, Florida, and a deadly heat wave strikes Moscow.

Dekkom's mercenaries chase after Max, Sarah, and the President, but they evade them. Later on, they manage to find and capture Dekkom and he's apprehended by the police and confronted by the President. Dekkom tries to convince the President to "use this opportunity," claiming that this was all a "preemptive strike" and that he wanted to turn America back to how it was in the past. Max rightfully punches Dekkom in the mouth, and he's arrested. Eventually, the Geostorm is stopped thanks to Jake and station commander Ute, but not before Dubai is also heavily destroyed by a giant tidal wave.

Freudian Excuse?

Okay, so.........

Dekkom wanted to do this, because he wanted to revert America back to how it was in 1945, where the country was a "shining city on a hill, not a bank disguised as a country."

So—okay, so...the Secretary of State wanted to cause a Geostorm, a series of natural disasters that would brutally mutilate the entire planet and attempted to kill the Cabinet of the United States, all so he could rule the world and blame the destruction on the President after he died, and for the sole purpose of eradicating America's "enemies." I give Dekkom props for being creative with his Take Over the World plot and I give him props for actually succeeding in killing millions of people instead of just attempting to do so, but this villain is not just playing with the Idiot Ball. He's chewing on it.

Pass.

Mitigating Factors?

Nope. He acts nice around Max, but when Max discovers that he's behind everything, he immediately tries to kill him.

Pass here.

Heinous Standard Issues?

He's the Big Bad behind everything. The only other villain in the movie is Duncan, and while he was the one who planted the virus, which is what led to Dutch Boy going out of control, he was doing so on Dekkom's orders for the sake of money.

Final Verdict?

Keeper. A very stupid Keeper though.

I write stories and shiz. You can read them here.
