Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Oh, and I finished the Doom's Day trilogy, of those 90's Marvel novels. Of the main villains:

  • A main villain in the first book clones Hulks and plans to rule the world, but he was originally kidnapped by Doctor Doom, and loves his wife.
  • Doctor Octopus is in the third book, but there's no reason to think he doesn't shed his WIE from that other novel (the reason I never effortposted him).
  • There's a villain in the second book, Baron Strucker, who likely counts, but he appears in one more novel, which I shall read this week. Likely effortpost Saturday.

Now, the Overarching Villain of the trilogy, Doctor Doom himself. He DOES try to destroy (?) NYC, and Take Over the World, but even if that's heinous enough (debatable, especially considering he probably has more resources than any currently-listed villain), he clearly doesn't count. Besides debatably being a WIE himself, he: Seems to care for his fellow Latverians; keeps his word at least once (that villain in the first book: when he's presumed dead, Doom gives his wife a weekly stipend on which she lives comfortably; there's no indication he stops this even when Doom discovers said scientist still alive); and, after being outwitted in the third book, decides—albeit begrudgingly—that an opponent (another scientist he had brainwashed) had earned his respect and, at least for the moment, her freedom.

So, long story short, only Strucker may count.

A 'Yes' to Christie.

Alrighty, got us a candidate for the day...the first of a couple Light Novel villains I'll be doing. Much as always? We have a villain here who really has no flipping right being in a lighthearted harem novel.

What's the work?

Anti Magic Academy The35th Test Platoon is a 2012 Light Novel series....in a world where magic, witches, wizards, and even a god or Eldritch Abomination here and there exist, the world is stabilizing itself after a huge magical war, and a group called the Inquisition is tasked with ensuring that no magic users or some such get out of control again.

Out story follows Takeru Kusanagi, a young teenager who seeks to join the Inquisition at first simply for the profits and such it will bring him.....unfortunately, his lack of skills in many particular subjects gets him to the bottom of the class, leading the "35th Squadron" which, shocker, is comprised entirely of females.

As our naive hero continuously bungles his way into various wacky situations where he fails to make a move on any of the girls like any male with a normal sense of hetero to him would, several forces are gearing up to make big moves in the world....and while the Big Bad isn't really a Keeper due to a variety of factors, it is Takeru's (And many, many others') Arch-Enemy who is our candidate for the day....and a pretty great villain at that.

Who is he?

Haunted is The Heavy for much of the story, and the most recurring and monstrous villain.

A high ranking member of the magic organization known as Valhalla, Haunted is a necromancer who dresses in a catholic priest's garb and acts like a goofy minister, however is anything but a righteous preacher, instead worshipping something a bit less...biblical in nature.

Haunted. Loves. Despair. Of all forms, in all shapes and sizes, Haunted loves "all humans equal" and deeply enjoys watching people be happy and joyful in life....simply so he may crush that hope and make those same people fall into loathful despair. He enjoys this "hobby" so much that it's downright sexual (As his disgusted partners will often notice).

With his magical sentient weapon Nachts at his side and all of Valhalla truthfully hating him for his insanity (Much to his giddiness), Haunted comes off across as silly, genki, and just plain fun.

That doesn't stop him from being one sick SOB.

What has he done?

Haunted is introduced standing amid an utter bloodbath of people, cheerfully butchering their bodies with a machete....Haunted amicably welcomes one of our heroes, Mari, to the scene, as it is revealed that he has used her to lure in "I don't know, fifty people...maybe?"

Haunted is keeping the powerful Mari under his thumb by holding several children who she lived with in an orphanage hostage, and promises that if she keeps helping him, he will reunite them (He's actually telling the truth, mind, not that it matters).

Having Mari lure in a few more victims, Haunted promises her that he will harm no innocents with his coming plan....which ends up not mattering, considering Haunted considers no one truly "innocent."

Now, Haunted has been tasked by Valhalla with rescuing several Valhalla agents from the Inquisition, as they have been captured, while simultaneously ordering him to be stealthy about it...Haunted decides to screw THAT, and, using the fifty ("maybe") people as sacrifices to summon forth a demonic entity, Haunted sics it onto one of the Inquisition's training school, gleefully having it slaughter any innocent bystanders in the process simply because he can.

As our hero Takeru defeats the entity, Haunted is sent packing for the moment....this event puts him in deep crap with the rest of Valhalla, as they rebuke him for his deplorable attack, both for its lack of pragmatism and its brutality. When Mari tries to confront Haunted about his lying to her regarded the innocent bystanders, Haunted proceeds to force her to watch as he rather brutally butchers several young, defenseless Inquisition students, absolutely drinking in her cries of horror and anguish, then frames her the act and leaves her to be caught by the rest of the Inquisition.

Haunted....immediately regrets this, as he realizes he lovedlovedLOVED Mari's despair and anguish, getting excited just thinking about it much to Nachts' disgust, and he proceeds to proclaim that he will "rescue" her and make her his "legal wife" so he may hurt and terrorize her over and over so as to experience her despair and fear over and over again.

Murdering an Inquisition student and stealing her body, Haunted infiltrates Takeru's Inquisition school and bursts from the girl's body ("Ta-daaaaa!') before unleashing several demons and the like onto the school populace, slaughtering any students in their way as Haunted hunts down Mari, notably wiping out the entire 15h Squadron except its leader Kyouya.

Confronting the girl, Haunted once more promises to reunite Mari with her orphanage friends if she will return with him, and like I said earlier, he is indeed telling the truth....unfortunately, as Takeru reminds Mari, Haunted is a necromancer. Haunted giddily proceeds to display Mari the souls of the numerous orphan kids, laughing in sexual glee at her face of horror and mental breakdown as he boasts he killed them long ago, and mockingly states they can just "find some new bodies for them...sure, they won't be ALL there, but at least you can hug their empty shells for comfort!"

Trying to capture Mari ("My legal wife!"), Haunted is ultimately sent fleeing as Takeru overwhelms him, and this puts Haunted into even worse crap with Valhalla.

Later, Haunted is ordered to work with the group known as the Alchemists so as to work towards later goals....during said partnership, Haunted meets Isuka, a cold scientist who is working on various experiments. While having a chat with her, Haunted displays anger for one of the few times in the series as he realizes Isuka commits evil acts towards a logical goal and just views killing as a stepping stone. Haunted hates this mindset, as his personal view is that killing should be a goal in and of itself, be it hate, love, or any other emotion driving it, and that the best part of it all is seeing the look of passion and anguish on someone's face right before they die. Isuka disagrees, making Haunted even more disgusted, and he stomps off....at which point it's revealed that Isuka's entire lab staff is comprised of innocents that Haunted has slaughtered and used his necromancy to revive as meat puppets.

Later, when Isuka outlives her usefulness to Valhalla and Haunted knows he won't get in trouble for it? He waits until Isuka is having a heart-to-heart moment with her sister, then pops up and fatally wounds Isuka, leaving her to die in her sister's arms as a sick irony to how Isuka felt nothing for allowing others to die...after offering Isuka's sister a place in Valhalla after seeing her despair, Haunted shrugs off her obvious rejection and leaves her to be killed by a robotic monstrosity he spawns.

Haunted returns to Valhalla's headquarters at a later time, confronting two women, Elizabeth and Kanaria, who are discussing a truce between their factions to assist Valhalla. Haunted giddily acts like a pervert towards the two, making vaguely-pedophilic comments and trying to molest them...when he gets his hand cut off by Kanaria, he proclaims "This must by the 'tsun' part I've heard about...now where's the 'dere'???"

Getting dragged off by two guards while whining that he needs to find his soon-to-be legal wife Mari, Haunted waits until he is out of earshot then murders the two guards, waltzing off to lead an army of Elizabeth's wizards in fighting Takeru.

....in an insane move? Once they confront Takeru, Haunted begins slaughtering his own troops while cackling like a lunatic, proclaiming he would never work with those who served under someone like Elizabeth (Yes, he's literally butchering his own partners because their boss shrugged off his creepy advances, wat), and proceeds to sort-of work with Takeru to kill the hundreds of wizards.

Knocking down Takeru, Haunted reveals that he has developed a rather....creepy attachment to the boy after he beat Haunted last time, as Haunted views him as the ultimate embodiment of hope and happiness. Haunted leaves Takeru be for now, as he wants to wait until just the right moment to duel the boy and drive him into despair before killing him.

When Haunted and other members of Valhalla meet the Big Bad, Sougetsu, who they have partnered with for awhile, they discover his goal of destroying the entire planet in a massive explosion....Haunted doesn't take very kindly to this idea, as it would remove his glorious "garden of despair" where he flourishes, and he attempts to kill Sougetsu before Sougetsu escapes.

Now, around this time, Takeru's sister, Kiseki, has been infected by an incredibly powerful demon and has been captured by some scientists working with Valhalla...to keep Kiseki and her demon under control, the scientists are keeping her in a dream state of happiness indefinitely.

This enrages Haunted, as he views it as blasphemous and disgusting to tamper with humanity's "real emotions" like that, and promptly astro-projects himself into Kiseki's mind...where he brutally Mind Rape(s) the mentally unstable girl into believing that Takeru is being stolen away from her by the people of the world, and convinces her to wipe out all life on the planet, specifically manipulating her into NOT killing everyone at once, but to hunt down and butcher people one at a time so as to let horror and despair slowly spread over the land.

When Nachts reminds Haunted that he supposedly doesn't want the entire world destroyed, Haunted pretty much reveals he has made a Xanatos Gambit....once Kiseki begins her rampage, Takeru will have two options. He will either have to kill her, which will drive him into despair....or he won't be able to, and Kiseki will carry out her genocide one human at a time, which will ALSO drive him into despair. And should Takeru try to talk Kiseki down, Haunted plans to stand-by and be prepared to murder Kiseki while Takeru watches. Win-win! (For Haunted)

While waiting for Takeru to confront Kiseki, Haunted decides to entertain himself....by slaughtering an entire town of innocents and dancing around in heir blood. In a particularly vile scene? Haunted finds a little girl crying in the street during his massacre....he learns from her that she lost her mother, and Haunted proceeds to help the girl find her mother and father. As they stumble across the couple, Haunted sends the girl to her mother....then rips her head off and chunks it to the mother's lap, getting waves of pleasure through his body as he sees the mother fall into catatonia at the sight.

Gleefully prancing around the countless bodies around him, Haunted hears an explosion and believes he missed Kiseki and Takeru's fight....he responds by literally curling into a ball and starting to cry because he missed his chance to ruin Takeru, but luckily for him, Kiseki is just getting started, as she begins her slaughter.

As Haunted composes himself and prepares to watch Takeru confront Kiseki, Haunted is forced into a duel with Kurogane, an Inquisitor who has been hunting him ever since he slaughtered all those students at the Inquisition Academy, where Haunted ALSO slipped away from Kurogane by having several innocents used as living distractions.

Getting into a duel with the superior Kurogane, Haunted is killed....then revives. Then is killed....then revives. It's then revealed that Haunted has been alive for centuries because, with his necromancy, he has been able to absorb the souls of others to prolong his own life...everytime he dies? One of the souls he has murdered and absorbed disappears. So that means that if, say, he's killed fifty people? He can revive fifty times before he's killed for good.

Kurogane kills Haunted....three thousand times, proclaiming his disgust at the Fridge Horror that Haunted has THAT many personal victims....Haunted promptly laughs at that, basically saying "Think that's bad? Watch THIS!" as he summons forth a powerful spell to hopefully kill Kurogane...said spell? Is almost never used because it can only be activated by sacrificing ten thousand souls.

Though now down to one of his last lives as he gives up ten thousand of the souls he has killed, Haunted is confident he will win....until Kyouya, the captain of the 15th Squadron that Haunted butchered at the Inquisition Academy, shows up, shoots him in the back, then pretty much rapid-fire shoots him a few more hundred times until his body is ripped to shreds....as his head lays there whining that he doesn't deserve to die like this, he is shot a final time through the skull, seemingly killing him....

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!

Using his final life to create himself a new body, Haunted revives just in time to see Takeru save the world and defeat his sister without killing her for the time being....Haunted confronts Takeru and, utterly done with it all, just tries to kill the boy to end the biggest beacon of hope in the world.

Takeru defeats Haunted, and, if we ONLY take the Light Novel main series into account? Kills the bastard for all he's worth. However, in an epilogue-thing published later, Haunted is revealed to have survived this duel and was instead locked away for five years.

Being brought before Takeru, Haunted giddily mocks the boy as Takeru tries to get information on how to cure Kiseki of her demonic infection for good, at which point, after getting in some low jabs, Haunted does indeed reveal a potential method for curing Kiseki, however he forces Takeru for a small favor in turn.....a final duel between the two to finally end the battle between the "beacons of hope and despair." Takeru agrees, but for...reasons (I think it might have been something about time constraints, I don"t know), the duel is offscreen completely, and Haunted was killed for good this time around. Thus, the day is saved and....stuff.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

Not a damn one that holds up.

There's a sort-of rumor/guessing thing in the story that Haunted MIGHT have been driven to madness by some weird dark entities, but we see no actual evidence for this or that Haunted even HAS an excuse.

For redeeming features....no. Haunted gets pissy at people who don't appreciate the "art" of killing and believes that people should be allowed to express their emotions as they see fit, even claiming "love" people as a whole, but for Haunted? This means nothing more than driving them insane with despair. He only cares for people as a whole because of how their inate optimism and hope enables him more people to break down and the like.

This actually extends to Haunted himself, interestingly enough. He lusts for the day that someone is finally able to drive him to anguish and despair of defeat and kill him, and he actually enjoys growing attachments to people just so he can kill/torment them and experience their AND his own despair at the fact. He's a creepy, creepy mofo.

He has a jovial relationship with his sentient weapon Nachts, but this is portrayed as nothing but mutual partnership and for someone for him to gloat and chat with about his plans...Takeru even threatens her at one point, and Haunted pretty much just gives an indifferent shrug before changing the subject.

Finally, Haunted tells Takeru a potential cure for Kiseki in exchange for a final duel....this isn't redeeming. Not only was it a legitimate deal that Haunted needed to honor in order to get his fight, but...thing is? We don't ever see Haunted honor the deal OR see if he told the truth. The story ends with Takeru preparing to go on a journey to a lead Haunted directed him towards, with no solid proof that Haunted even knew anything. Knowing Haunted, he could have easily sent Takeru on a wild goose chase as a final "screw you" simply for the satisfaction of knowing that Takeru would fail to find Kiseki a cure. So yeah, not redeeming one BIT.

Heinousness?

Worst in-story and it's not even funny. Other villains are mass murderers or even genocidal, but Haunted trumps them all in sadism and monstrosity...what he does to Kiseki, Mari and the oprhans, and that town in particular is some of the most jacked up stuff in the story.

Final Verdict?

Hella easy Keeper, good lawdy why do these Light Novels have such freakishly wicked villains....

[tup] To Christie and Haunted.

@ ACW, yeah I remember those novels and Strucker being a nasty SOB. Doom doesn't count, because I think writing Doom as a CM would go against the character and those novels generally stuck with keeping the villains close to their comic book counterparts in terms of characterization.

Also since characters being played by Richard Lynch has by mentioned before, Lynch actually appeared on Star Trek the Next Generation, playing a scummy space pirate named Baran. Baran has no redeeming qualities, but I am not sure he is quite bad enough to make the Star Trek heinous bar. He is essentially stealing ancient artifacts for a mysterious buyer and controls his crew through implants that causes them pain and can kill them if they disobey him. He also tries to destroy a small Federation outpost to get one of the artifacts. Baran's crew are generally just greedy criminals, but I do not think they deserve to be his slaves. Baran may not be as bad as some Star Trek villains we have discussed, but he does have fewer resources then most Star Trek villains:

http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Arctus_Baran

I am not sure if he is bad enough to warrant a effort post or not.

Yes to Haunted, although this "this villain has no business being in this lighthearted harem" thing is an attitude that should die fast considering how many we've got and how many more we potentially will get (Ravok's got an entire site filled with similar stories that may very well have easy keeps).

Sorry this took so long, but here's my draft for The Divine Comedy's Devil:

  • The Divine Comedy: Dis/Satan was once "the highest of all creatures," above every angel and man gifted by the Highest Joy with immortality, invincibility, Super-Intelligence, and perfect happiness. However, Dis came to love his superiority to the lower angels and only that superiority, making the supremacy of his Father unbearable. In acting on this Pride he convinced his fellow angels and the first humans to rebel against the Love known as God. With his rebellion, the Devil introduced all the evil, suffering, and death that would ever be into the world while condemning any who followed him to Inferno, a realm where beings built for eternal Paradise have been corrupted into murderers drowning in the fiery blood of their victims and cannibals biting into the corpses of their children. With his angelic intelligence, Dis knew all of this would happen if he carried out his "arrogant rape," yet brought all of the tortures and crimes described in Inferno into existence without any remorse.

I PM'd Ravok on who the other light novel canditate is and I actually know that villain. Small world and a what a creep said villain is.

I'm curious could we make an adjustment to say Anime & Manga (includes light novels) As some of these villains have there worst deeds in the light novels specifically while the anime tones it down and we do have multiple CM's from light novels.
