Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up][up] That gives an impression that the manga and Brotherhood versions have different origins. I would write it something like this:

  • Fullmetal Alchemist: The manga version of Father lacks the Alas, Poor Villain moment that his Brotherhood counterpart had. A being from beyond the Gate given form in a small flask and named Homunculus by the nameless slave who would become Van Hohenheim in the Xerxes empire...

@Doc Jamore Sloth does, in fact, have some acknowledgement of his surroundings although he doesn't have any control of himself and prefers others do the thinking for him. All he wants, is to finish the task, so he could sleep. Which is not helped by the fact that Pride's shadow watched him working the entire time so Sloth had no choice but to dig. The enormous work he had to do was excruciating even for a homunculus his size and the strain was so harsh that his hands were actually bleeding in one of the manga chapters. Also, Father bringing his children back to life was just Pragmatic Villainy.

Just to point out, whose fans hate what character more is either The Scrappy or Hate Sink. Neither of those mean much (A Hate Sink may count but only if they've got no redeeming features and have high enough heinous standards).

Anyway you meet Tucker first so I wouldn't mind putting him first but it doesn't matter.

A fun little tidbit about American Psycho? Patrick Bateman, a complete psychopath, kills Paul Allen, a smug scumbag playboy, with an ax.

Bateman is played by Christian Bale, who played Batman in The Dark Knight Trilogy.

Allen is played by Jared Leto, who played the Joker in Suicide Squad.

Ergo, Batman killed the Joker. [lol]

Next up, how much fans "hate" character has absolutely NOTHING to do with this trope. Neither its villains themselves, or the way they are listed.

Regardless, I'd personally say put Father first. He IS the Big Bad of the entire story, and I've always thought it made sense to put the villains in order of importance to the plot. Thus, I'd personally make the order:

  • Father

  • The Gold-Toothed Doctor

  • Shout Tucker

But, that's just me.

Anywho, moving on from the Ys proposals, got us an easy Keep here. Thanks to Scraggle for the pointer on this one.

What's the work?

Dark Gods is a 2014 comic miniseries by Justin Jordan and published by everyone's favorite grotesque comic company, AVATAR PRESS!

In a world much like our own, the meek man Josh Resnick is forced to join up with the Storm, an organization formed to stop otherworldly entities from destroying the planet.

Seems simple enough.

Who is he?

The CEO is the.....well, CEO of a social media corporation and The Heavy of the comic. Yes, both the CEO and his company are unnamed, roll with it.

An always giddy, gleefully sadistic, and self-proclaimed "smug asshole," the CEO works to free the dark Serpent God Tiamat from her imprisonment in pursuit of two things: Power, and CHAOS.

What has he done?

The CEO is introduced throwing a huge party for his corporate building. Said party consists of himself and several demonic beasts brutally torturing, violating, and murdering dozens of employees, something he then tries to do to our protagonst, Josh Resnick.

After Resnick is saved from his near death by the organization known only as "The Storm," led by the no nonsense Murdock, the CEO is later tracked down to his home by the Storm to be apprehended for questioning.

Trapping them inside his home, the CEO reveals it is an Eldritch Location of sorts that feeds off of chaos and death, and thus giddily watches and mocks the various members of the Storm as they are driven insane and butchered by themselves in insanity.

Once the Storm manages to make it through his house then capture him, the CEO is taken to their base, where he is tortured via electric shocks for information on his dealings with other worldly entities.

The CEO then goes on a long monologue of how, for years, he has used his social media corporation to slowly but surely lower countless humans' mental sanity by spreading doubt and fear throughout them, and then, using high tech "triggers," was able to drive several of them insane and into murderous frenzies.

Cackling as he explains this, we see a HELLTON of people being instantly "triggered" by waves sent out by the CEO's company, with such pretty images as...

  • A man shooting up a mall.

  • A woman seeing others as demons then clawing out her own eyes.

  • A cheerleader lighting herself on fire during a football game.

  • Various men, women, and children having been disemboweled.

The CEO proclaims that the hour of destruction is nigh, as hundreds of murders and butchering happen across the country, with all them in some way having a specific symbol somehow drawn or left on the scenes. The symbol of Tiamat.

Once Tiamat, the serpent goddess of chaos', power begins pouring into the world, the CEO is beheaded by Murdock....to which the CEO simply laughs, stating that now that his goddess is coming, he is immortal.

As a...well, head, the CEO spends most of his time sowing seeds of discontent in Resnick, trying to get him to turn on the Storm, and bursts out laughing as Tiamat finally arrives and prepares to bring ultimate chaos and torment to all humanity except himself.

Unfortunately for the CEO, Murdock is a god, duels Tiamat, and the CEO's head is used as a conduit to ultimately destroy both Murdock and Tiamat, reducing the CEO back to mortal goop in the process......yeah, it got weird at the end. [lol]

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

None.

The CEO grew up feeling "different" than everyone else, and willingly made the choice to never socialize much because he felt like he was better than others.

In adulthood, he creates his company and begins his plans to revive Tiamat just because he CAN, and wants to live eternal in her world of destructive agony.

Easy Pass here.

Heinousness?

Worst in-story except Tiamat herself, which, seeing as she's a GOD....yeah.

The CEO drives hundreds upon hundreds of people across America into violent frenzies that leads to them killing themselves and others in mass murders to unleash a dark god who wil torture and annihilate all of humanity, just to get some kicks out of it.

Prick.

Final Verdict?

Keep the douchebag.

Alright. Sorry for the late reply.....Here's the candidate from the Twin Star Exorcist as I promised:

What's the Work

Sousei No Onmyouji/Twin Star Exorcist is an anime about two kids called Rokuro and Benio and their lives as exorcist warriors. Rokuro once had the dream to be the greatest Exorcist, and to cleanse all Impurities. But a tragedy in his past has made him no longer wish to have anything to do with exorcists. Enter Benio, a girl who, through a tragedy of her own, wishes to be the greatest Exorcist.

Needless to say the two don't really get along, but forces conspire to bring them together due to an ancient prophecy that states the child of their union will be the most powerful exorcist to ever exist.

Yes, I mention that Rokuro had a painful tragedy in the past and it was caused by someone. Who is this someone you may ask?

Who Is He

. Yuto Ijika is Benio’s twin elder brother and a former friend of Rokuro. The first time we knew about him is that he was supposed to died in the tragedy that struck two years ago in a flashback of Rokuro and the second time we see him, he's in the flashback of Benio by telling her to become stronger and he's the one who gave Benio her precious hairpin. However, He's also the one behind the tragedy that Rokuro has endured.

What has He Done

He made his first appearance in Episode 9 He greets the main protagonists and one of the 12 Guardians, Seigen in a polite albeit in a taunting manner. Rokuro was angry at him since he knew that he's still alive and asked him about the incident that happened two years ago. And yes, Here's the explanation of the tragedy that Yuto caused: So two years ago, Yuto claims that he will made most of the kids in his dormitory—The name of the dormitory is Hiinatsuki Dormitory—to become as powerful as him and Rokuro. However, He ended up tricked them with his dark ritual and then put them in an And I Must Scream state when they become a mindless corrupted Impurity. And Yuto still continues experimenting them. As a result, Rokuro was forced to killed them and the Dormitory was set ablaze. Around 18 people died by this incident and it's called the Hiinatsuki Dormitory Incident.

After he taunts Rokuro about the incident that happened 2 years ago caused by him, Benio confused about what and also ended up being shocked after she knew the truth that her brother was behind this since due to the fact he used to be a caring & kind brother towards her. He delivers "The Reason You Suck Speech" to Benio by saying that he actually hates her and his caring towards her is just a facade which made Benio's spirit broken. After the speech, Rokuro runs amok and tries to punch Yuto but he repels Rokuro with a similar arm that he had, Seeing the battle getting nowhere. Benio intervenes and stops Rokuro, After the battle, Yuto appears and “respects” Rokuro’s potential and asking him to join into his side. But Rokuro refuses and saying that he would rather die than joining him. Yuto taunts him by saying that his biggest crime isn’t killing the Hinatsuki kids or trying to stop Yuto, but his biggest crime is the “lack of commitment of being truly powerful” and then retreats.

In his second appearance, It was revealed that he was the one who corrupted Rokuro's childhood friend, Mayura, Into a mindless impurity so that he could "test how strong he is". However, This pissed off not only Rokuro, But also Seigen too given that she is his daughter after all. When they fight, Yūto fatally wounds Seigen who casts a barrier around the Twin Star Exorcists and the fainted Mayura. Seigen resolves to blow himself up; however, Rokuro and Benio escape from inside the barrier, which again Yūto congratulates. Seigen is saved minus one arm and Rokuro manages to land a punch on Yūto who is shocked. He then announces that he will wait for Rokuro's answer (whether he will join Yūto on the dark side) at a place where there are precious memories for the both of them: Hiinatsuki Dormitory. Yes, This battle resulted Seigen receives an undergoing surgery and quits the 12 Guardian Job while Mayura is still unconscious after she got cured from the corruption that Yuto caused.

When Rokuro and Benio confronting Yuto in their next battle, They tried at their best to defeat him. However, Even if they use all their powers and abilities, They are failed to defeat him. This is also where Yuto's extreme sadism were revealed in battle. When he's on this battle, He manages to injure and break Rokuro's arm. However, Benio attacks him until she got beaten up by his brother and then he manages to damage Benio's legs and sadistically stepping on of it, He then took her hairpin that he gave to her in the past and then smashed it and he also left Benio to die by the Impurities. Yuto then proceeds to sadistically taunts Rokuro by saying that it's easier to achieve his goal with Rokuro on his side. Rokuro asked if he ever to join Yuto's side, Yuto promised to spare Rokuro's loved ones but it was in fact to be a lie by Yuto to move some things since he already had the body and a power of an Impurity. He then plans to steal the spell powers of all humans and plans to get stronger by killing them since he had a power more powerful than the exorcist himself but he's still needs more so as a result, He plans to drain the spell powers from everyone in the country.

Meanwhile, A Basara named Kamui offered his help to defeat Yuto by corrupting her body given that he doesn't like Yuto flaunting his powers. Benio was reluctant at first given that he is the Basara that killed her parents. But her determination to fight in Rokuro's side once more makes her accept it and after this, She prepared herself to defeat Yuto with her brand new corrupted legs. She prepared to attack Yuto and succeeded to make him injured although he still manages to fight back. But her new powers soon ran out since she is not yet strong enough to handle them and as a result, He delivered a beat down for Benio and then threatens to tear Benio's leg and arm slowly so that he could show them how stupid and powerless they are. Rokuro takes over again and, despite still receiving a beating from Yuto, begins to overpower Yūto, with the spirits of the Hiinatsuki Tragedy victims holding him up. Yuto is then sent to the dark abyss and defeated for the time being.

When Yuto was defeated, It was revealed that he was working with a Powerful Basara named Kuranashi and gives some informations on how to trap and drain the 12 Guardian powers so that Kuranashi himself could become powerful and merge the real world with Magano and Yuto himself is recovering in Ame-no-Mihashira tree. And when 2 years has passed, The twin stars fights with this powerful Basara named Kuranashi who overpowers them but however, Tatara gravely injures him and as a result, He then absorbs Yuto's body but got backfired as he has been used all along by Yuto and he's just waiting for the opportunity to absorb that Basara and obtained the power he had accumulated.

After he drained the powers from the strongest Basara, He greets Rokuro and Benio and he's glad to see Rokuro even if the days had passed. However, He was disappointed to see that Rokuro is still hanging Benio. After the two exorcist seemingly defeated him with the Special Move, Yuto survives and says that people like Exorcist,Basara,Impurity or 12 Guardians and all of his surroundings are prey for him especially Rokuro. After he deflects the Twin Star Exorcist's attacks. He flees and is followed by them and arrived in a mysterious location that he claims to be the bottom of Ame-no-Mihashira tree (Other names are Chamber of Darkness/Beneath the fifth layer of existence) where the original exorcist, Abe no Seimei, lies dormant. He also claims that he absorbed all of Seimei's powers, killing him, and he also learned all of his knowledge and discovered the secret behind Rokuro's origins, trying to provoke him, but Benio helps him to calm down. Yūto then traps Benio into a barrier and attacks her until she is seemingly killed. Guilt-ridden and devastated over her apparent death, an enraged Rokuro suffers a strange transformation, and Yūto reveals that Rokuro is actually an Impurity. Just as Rokuro's transformation is about to reach it's peak, and the two boys are about to fight, Arima, The head of the Exorcist group, who was supposed to be dead, appears and rescue the Twin Stars before retreating with them.

After Rokuro got recovered from the battle and was shopping at night, He met Yuto in the streets and Yuto threatens to destroy the entire world if Rokuro doesn't want to fight with him. This resulted Rokuro forcing to terminate his partnership with Benio and comes alone to the bottom of Ame-no-Mihashira tree to fight Yuto

As Rokuro and Yuto began to fight, Yuto then tries to attack Rokuro emotionally by summoning the spirits of Hiinatsuki Dormitory and taunts him. However, Rokuro said that it's no use to pointing that out to him since he already thought about it nonstop and agonizing over it everyday. Yuto then proceeds to attack Rokuro afterwards but Rokuro still tries to beat him. However, when Rokuro was trying to use the special resonance move, Yuto then mocks Rokuro by saying that Benio isn't here and then proceeds to beat him so that he could try to make Rokuro forgot about Benio and saying that it was fun to beat Rokuro up and wished to do this forever.

When Yuto overpowers Rokuro, He then asked Yuto about his own motivations. Yuto then responds by saying that he doesn't care about the future and the only thing that matters to him is fighting with Rokuro. He also thinks that the world is going to end anyway since the Impurity was created from the human's consciousness Yuto then taunts Rokuro by asking him to kill all the humans together from the orders of Abe-no-Seimei and he also said that everyone had been dancing in the palm of Abe-no-Seimei's hand.

Yuto then manages to unlock his impurity powers and saying that the results of winning and losing doesn't matter to him since he wants to fight with Rokuro with everything that he had. He then threatens Rokuro that he will destroy the world if Rokuro doesn't want to fight with Yuto as best as he could. As a result, Rokuro then unlocks his Yin powers transform into the Cataclysm King and the delighted Yuto and Rokuro prepared their final battle until their death.

Rokuro then gains the upper hand against Yūto who is in joy that he was punched by Rokuro himself and he found the pain of his body make him more alive than before. However, Yuto also said that it won't be enough to break him and felt that the prelude of the destruction has just begun. Rokuro then just stops after he had enough with Yuto since he has enough of his trick and doesn't want to fall for it again and also knew that Yuto wanted to make Rokuro losing his control, He also said that he doesn't want to fully transform into the Cataclysm King due to all the people who had support him through are with his side now and he’s fighting to protect them and he’s not going to kill Yuto and just want to stopping him and prevent him from going further in the wrong direction. However, Yuto founds this very disappointing and insulting to him and as a result, He releases all the energy of the Twelve Guardians and Basara stored inside his body.

Even if Yuto released his full power and still taunts him that he's still the reincarnation of Cataclysm King and asking Rokuro to killed him which he refuses to do. Yuto's spell power deteriorates. Rokuro declares himself the victor of the match and said it's all over. But Yuto claims that he still had some powers left to fight and still wants to play with Rokuro. Rokuro still refused to fight and says that he still had some friends and his loved ones who are waiting for him to go home.

However, Yuto then manages to pull one last trick by saying that he will make Rokuro forget about his friends and loved ones by threatening Rokuro to launch an attack in the human world by opening a Dragon Spot (A portal between the Impurity Realm, Magano and the Real World). As a result, Rokuro lost his sanity and then punches Yuto. Even with all the punches, Yuto is still flattered by the things inside Rokuro and still threatens Rokuro if he didn't punch him harder and as a result, Rokuro delivers a No-Holds-Barred beatdown to Yuto and delivers a final blow to him. Yuto is happy to get his last wish granted and then congratulates Rokuro that he lost his memories. Yuto then dies happily since his goal to bring the end of the world is complete and then he dies.

Freudian Excuse/Mitigating Factors

Alright, Let's touch this one by one.....First thing first, One of the characters in the show said that Yuto was a result of Abe-no-Seimei's plan went out of focus and felt his existence was unnecessary to this world. However, This was subverted since he isn't aware for about this fact when recovering in Ame-no-Mihashira tree and has a joy to see the world will lead to it's destruction

And in one episode, Yuto claims that he had a hateful life due to surrounding by his parents who valued their ideals that Yuto hates,The annoying sister that he has and a mean teacher and he is also tired to play the good brother role to Benio. However, This Freudian Excuse is bullshit since we never saw Yuto interacting each other with his parents and Benio herself was innocent so I don't buy this FE.

And his love for Rokuro....It doesn't come across as mitigating since it's mostly a twisted obsession of him when he met Rokuro the first time and he doesn't care if Rokuro get injured or not. He also used to think that Rokuro is the pinnacle of the person that he hates and yeah, I mentioned that he respects Rokuro when he first time met him after the Hiinatsuki Incident. However, This is only for taunting Rokuro so I don't buy it. Same goes with his rants which comes across as taunting his own opponents.

Heinous Standard

Okay, Let’s talk about the heinous standard first for Twin Star Exorcist and the villains who commited it. And yes, I will give you a warning so bear with me. The heinous standard of the anime is really different than the manga considered after episode 20, it’s a different story altogether. And no, I am not going to read it since the manga is not finished yet. And here are the guys who commited heinous standard in the anime:

I think the closest keeper from this anime along with Yuto is Kuranashi. Who is the one that caused the Dragon Spots that ended up causing a miasma that infected the humans who have no spell powers by breaking off a branch of Ame-no-Mihashira. (The tree that is a barrier between Magano and the Real World) and his goal was simply to rule the world by breaking that barrier. Also, His first appearance/Establishing character moment is that he tasked the twin Basaras Momochi & Chijiwa to kill the Twin Star Exorcist and when they failed.........He killed Momochi after this and gives his power to Chijiwa. Not only that, He plays some sadistic games with Rokuro and Benio by summoning a giant Kegare plant that harms the innocents and trying to suck The Twelve Guardians powers. As for now, He doesn’t count due to one pesky redeeming quality......A.K.A. His relationship with one of the Basara that was working for him, Moro and also he was used by Yuto all along and not only that, Yuto shares a crime with him since he was the one who came with the idea on how to capture 12 Guardians in a complicated way.

And the other Basara's doesn't stand out from Yuto either. Sure, There's Moro who loves to ate humans however she doesn't count due to her relationship with Kuranashi and then there's Chijiwa who trapped innocent high school students in an And I Must Scream situation. However, Unlike Yuto, He was motivated by the death of his brother while Yuto himself was motivated For the Evulz and succeeded with that.

Not only that, There’s Abe no Seimei. Who wants to eradicate the Yin from humanity and took their spell power. But he doesn’t count at all since he is a Well Intentioned Extremist and he made a promise with Rokuro and Benio that he will try to see the world again if it improved itself or not after a thousand years.

Also, For other Impurities........Yes, Most of them had an evil laugh when they attack which indicates they are sadistic. But they have not enough personality besides the main villains and the Basara heck, Even the one with personality and is not a Basara is actually a good Impurity who didn’t seem to attack people and wanted to see some pretty things.

So yeah, With that being said.....Yuto's still stand out given his addition of the personal crimes that he has and his sheer sadism is what pushes him over the edge for me

Final Verdict

He's a keeper in my book. Sorry if this EP is too long sad. What makes me trying to effortpost him is that he's one of the villains that made me either felt angry, infuriated or sad since his personal crimes really sticks on my head so yeah

I'll give a [tup] for Arem. 2-dimensional character for sure, but I think he doesn't quite qualify as a GDV.

What exactly does it mean to say that a villain is "not heinous enough" to be a Complete Monster? The term seems too vague to definitively settle a dispute over deciding whether someone qualifies as a CM or not.

Honestly... at this point, I think I'm going to switch to a yea on Arem myself. Yea to Yuto too, I think.

[up] Baseline heinousness. That's subjective from person to person, but it's usually defined as a series of acts that take the candidate past the Moral Event Horizon and then far beyond that.

Elfen Lied did a post. Don't ignore it, please.

Yes to the above examples

[tup]Yuto

@E1: That's a matter of body count and/or deeds. For instance, a villain who kills 1-3 people probably isn't gonna count, unless the murder(s) was/were sufficiently heinous. Scraggle once did an EP for a teacher from a graphic novel (can't remember his name) who raped and gruesomely murdered a little girl who reminded him of a student he had an affair with, and remained utterly unrepentant. That's nasty enough to warrant the CM label. Or at least, that's my understanding.

But if there's more than one villain in a work, then as said above, it's a matter of baseline heinousness.
