Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Well, seeing as I was given a go ahead for this, here is, at long last, the effort post on the Big Bad of the 19th Pokemon anime film, Volcanion and the majestic Magaerna - Minister Jarvis.

Who is Jarvis? What has he done?: Jarvis is the prime cabinet minister of the Azoth Kingdom, knowledgeable in the art of Mystery Science (science that's fueled by sorcery of mystic arts) and of the land's history. He helped to raise and educate the young Prince Racel for many years, getting him interested in the subject of Mystery Science as well. Behind closed doors, Jarvis is a corrupt, unethical, treacherous individual who schemes to usurp total control of the kingdom for himself, with only Princess Chymia suspecting him of plotting treason. Jarvis emotionally manipulated and brainwashed Racel into becoming loyal to and dependent on him, and also developed his own brand of "Neo Mystery Science" in order to create a technique called "Mega Wave," which, unlike Mega Evolution, can force many Pokémon to Mega Evolve at once, the Pokemon feeling horrible crippling pain inside of them rather than the strength of a bond with their human friend, and their minds would be wired to follow the orders of those wearing Mega Wave devices.

Jarvis is first seen when his henchmen, Dohga and Ether, deliver the rare Pokemon Magearna to him and Racel after having fought off an attack by the angered legendary Volcanion. Using the Mega Wave jewel set in his staff, Jarvis assaults Ash and Volcanion with a Mega Alakazam, Mega Glalie and Shiny Mega Gengar, Volcanion eventually takes back Magearna and escapes, much to Jarvis' anger. Afterwards we see Jessie, James, Meowth, and Wobbuffett of Team Rocket brought before Jarvis in his office. Sensing an opportunity after realizing they know Ash well, Jarvis recruits them to aid his cause, supplying them with Mega Wave bracelets along with a Heracross and Pinsir, then tracks Ash and friends' location so he can send Team Rocket after them to retrieve Magaerna for him.

Unsurprisingly, Team Rocket fails, so Jarvis personally leads a massive attack on the Nebel Plateau, home of Magearna and Volcanion. He traps Ash, Volcanion and many of the Pokémon of the plateau in machines that torture them with electrical currents. Jarvis has his flunkies offer a trade to Magearna - itself in exchange for the safety of the hostages. Magaerna gives in and boards their airship. Jarvis then has his Gengar paralyze Magearna and open the hatch on its chest, revealing its Soul-Heart. Prince Racel, who was led to believe Magearna would become his friend once it belonged to them, realizes that Jarvis intends to remove the Soul-Heart, which could cost Magaerna it's life. He tries to stop him, but Jarvis has Dohga hold him back and force him to watch as Jarvis removes the Soul-Heart , effectively "killing" Magearna, then discards its body before having his army of Pokémon all use Hyper Beam on the plateau, seemingly killing all of the humans and Pokémon below, When Racel reacts with further horror, Jarvis has him put to sleep with Gengar's Hypnosis. planning on disposing of him later once he's taken total control over the land. Meowth realizes he can still hear Magearna's voice alive in the Soul-Heart and he rallies Jessie and James, who share with him disgust at Jarvis' behavior towards Racel and actions at the Plateau, to try and take it back from Jarvis. Jarvis uses his Mega Wave to blast Jessie and James off again but keeps Meowth hostage to continue translating Magearna's voice for him, for it might prove of some use to his ambitions.

Jarvis installs the Soul-Heart in a machine at the heart of the castle, transforming it into a flying fortress designed to defend the city in ancient times He sees that his enemies survived his attack at the plateau and are pursuing him aboard Chymia's flying machine, but instead of getting angry, he feels excited to test the fortress weaponry on living targets. He begins charging the fortress's laser cannon, but Magearna is actively fighting his control and prevents it from going off. While Dohga and Ether go out to fight off the attackers with their army of Mega Wave Pokémon, Jarvis goes to the control room. When Ash, Greninja, Chymia and Volcanion break through, he traps them in the same electrical torture machines he used earlier, then decides to break Magearna's resilient spirit by using his Gengar's Mean Look on it and force it to use the laser to destroy it's home, the Nebel Plateau, and all life within it. The act of destroying its home causes Magearna's soul to fade from the Soul-Heart, pleasing Jarvis, who then orders another shot to finish off the plateau and all its residents. It fires, but is blocked by the Pokemon below, working in combination with Zygarde. Volcanion breaks itself and the others free from the machines, and Pikachu counters Jarvis' Gengar's Shadow Ball with Electro Ball. Jarvis drops his staff as he falls back and Ash jams it into the machinery, breaking the Mega Wave jewel and removing the Soul Heart. As a result, all the Mega Wave Pokémon revert to their original states and escape from the fortress. Realizing that his plans are destroyed, Jarvis locks the fortress on a collision course with the Nebel Plateau in hopes of it destroying it and killing all of his enemies both on the fortress and on the plateau below, then attempts to escape using a jet pack. But Ash-Greninja throws a Water Shuriken at him, which disables his jet pack, causing him to spiral out of control and crash down into the forest. During the film's credits, Chymia finds him stuck in a tree and arrests him using the same magnetic bands used earlier on Ash and Volcanion. He attempts to flee, but is pulled back onto her craft by the magnets.

Any Mitigating Factors, like Freudian Excuse or Redeeming Qualities: There are none to be found. He seems like a well mannered mentor to Prince Racel at first, but this proves to be a Faux Affably Evil facade to hide his true depravity. He is motivated solely by greed and a desire to wield the power to dominate all he surveys and believes should belong to him. He uses Racel only for as long as he gives him a good public image within the kingdom and can assist him in his Mystery Science experiments, but has no true care for the boy and shows eagerness to be done with him once he takes over. He has no regard for the lives of any Pokemon or person he threatens and seems incapable of feeling any remorse about his deeds.

Does he pass the Heinous standard?: When stacked up against the competition, I'd say yes, very much so. He lacks the attempted omnicide in his rap sheet that Cyrus or Lysandre have in their's, but that's because he lacks that in his goals and motivations. His interest is in conquering a kingdom and asserting supremacy over all the people and creatures of the land, subjugating them to his will, and with the resources he has at his disposal, he goes all out, much like Dr. Yung, Hunter J, and Grings Kodai, or Charon and IO from manga.

Like the Iron Mask Marauder he tries to force the protagonist Pokemon to destroy its own home, but in this case it's worse because while Celebi was brainwashed by the Dark Ball and in a trance the entire time, Magaerna can still feel emotions for what it's being forced to do, and Jarvis was well aware of this because the purpose of ordering it to turn it's power on it's own home was to break it's spirit.

He also perverts the process of Mega Evolution, which is supposed to be fueled by a strong bond and synchronization of hearts between human trainers and Pokemon, by using sorcery mixed with science to take over the minds of Pokemon capable of Mega Evolution and rendering them in pain as they undergo the process, which is both mind enslavement and mental torture via Mind Rape. He also practices a more realistic form of brainwashing in how he brought up the young prince Racel and how he emotionally manipulated and conditioned him into loyalty to his treasonous agenda.

He attempts to kill children and Pokemon on Nebal Plateau, is willing to throw away his pawns like Team Rocket and Racel once they've served their use to him, temporarily kills a Pokemon in order to use it's power to awaken a Weapon of Mass Destruction that he uses to threaten to destroy an entire populated ecosystem/area of Pokemon, and even tries to have everyone and everything in said area completely obliterated out of spite for his plans getting thwarted, very similar to something done by one of the franchise's biggest Monsters, Purple Eyes in "Guardian Signs".

Final Verdict: Definitely the most heinous and depraved Pokemon anime villain since Kodai, so I'd say he's a keeper. [tup]

From what I looked up, the Volcanion movie hasn't even been released in the U.S yet. It's barely been a week since it's english dub has been released. We usually wait two weeks after it's released in the U.S before making an effortpost.

'Yes' to Jarvis. Dude sounds like he gives Kodai a run for his money in "Petty prickness".

Anywho, here's the X-Men the Animated Series candidate I promised.

Who is he?

Omega Red is a supersoldier created by the Soviet Union 25 years ago, and, after being locked away by his creators themselves for said 25 years due to being a completely homicidal madman, Red is freed in the present by a group of Russian generals desiring to conquer nation for themselves.

Too bad Red has plans of his own.

What has he done?

After being awoken in the episode Red Dawn, Red begins leading numerous blitzkriegs against Russian cities and small villages, explicitly killing many people and nearly killing many more, babies inclhded, and reducing said cities and villages to rubble.

Any survivors of Red's assaults are sent to prison camps, and, when three X-Men show up to stop him, Red seizes Colossus, one of said X-Men's, defenseless little sister, threatening to kill her if they don't surrender, then begins draining her life force (He can do that) before being stopped by Wolverine.

When sent to exile the current Russian leaders, Red instead tries to kill them all, barely being stopped by another superpowered Russian soldier, Darkstar, who eventually turns against him due to his brutality.

Red continues his domination after betraying his current masters, and, after failing to have even more defenseless survivors wiped out, happily duels the X-Men, taking on and nearly killing numerous X-Men before he beaten by Storm freezing him in ice.

Later showing up in Deal With the Devil, Red is unthawed by a Russian military unit in order to send him under water to use his military knowledge to guide a crashed nuclear submarine back into safety, promising to restore his human form to him should he comply.

Red agrees, if Wolverine and Storm will come along with him, both of whom he gleefully taunts about their various personal issues as the mission goes along.

Taking control of the submarine, Red reveals (SHOCKER) that he has plans of his own, and, revealing that he doesn't want to be returned to his human form, sets the nuclear submarine to launch it's missiles at 15 of the world's biggest cities, hoping to kill millions of innocents and start a nuclear holocaust, at which point he will dive down into the ocean, watch the world fall into chaos and burn, wait for the fallout to dissipate, then rise up and conquer whatever of humanity is left. Prick.

Brutally trying to murder Wolverine and Storm, Red, after realizing his missiles were stopped from hitting their targets, states that if he can't launch his missiles, he'll just set them off right there and annihilate the coastal state of Hawaii.

Fortunately, Red and his plan are stopped, and he is sent tumbling to the bottom of the ocean inside the submarine, seemingly trapped for the foreseeable future.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?

Eh, not really. Everyone is constantly calling him a "living weapon", but there's nothing to suggest that he's been altered mentally or anything. Just given supersoldier serum and his body turned into a rare metal (Facts that he is perfectly happy about, mind).

Also, he is fanatically convinced that the "people" "need" a leader like him to bring "order", but no one, citizen, Russian, or anyone, approves of him or his methods, making these rants just come off as sever self-delusion that SOVIET UNION is the best form of government for the world. Oooookaaaay....

Heinousness?

Definitely one of the worst villains in the series. In his first appearance alone he is particularly nasty, but his second appearance where he tries to start a freaking nuclear holocaust that will explicitly kill millions of people, he upgrades to a truly depraved monster that surpasses two of the other current CMs in attempted bodycount.

Overall, Red lead numerous assaults against villages and cities, killing numerous people and throwing any survivors into prison camps, threatened a little girl's life to stave off the X-Men, tried to kill off a small group of surviving citizens who had escaped his tyranny, attempted to wipe out millions of people in a nuclear bloodbath then rule over the ashes, threatening to simply annihilate Hawaii in a fit of rage when this doesn't work, and he is always eager to brutalize his opponents and taunt them about their weaknesses.

Final Verdict?

I'd say he's a Keeper, which surprises me, seeing as how despite how popular this series was, he was never thoroughly discussed

No! That is NOT Solid Snake! Stop impersonating him!

@ACW: Yuda has an Alas, Poor Villain moment when Rei defeats him, conceding to Rei's superior fighting and more beautiful technique before killing himself by plunging Rei's arms into himself. It's heavily implied that he had an unrequited crush on Rei and confesses that it was an honor to die in his arms.

Call it a nitpick, but the pothole for Lawton bothers me.

  • Lawton, known as Lotten in the Japanese version, is a tyrant lording over a small western style town called Crash Town, who forces those he's defeated to join him or face slavery in the mines. He gets into a match with Yusei while Yusei and the gang are trying to escape the mines, but before it can be decided, he throws a stick of dynamite at Yusei, Kalin, West and Nico that results in a cave-in; Yusei and Kalin fall off the mountain, while Nico and West are unconscious on the ground. Lawton takes them back to Crash Town, renaming it Lawton Town after Barb and he double-cross his brother Malcolm. Later, not satisfied with the number of workers in the mines, he and Barb begin forcing their henchmen to Duel for their survival, which is stopped by Yusei and Kalin. Once he does start to lose his 2-on-1-handicap match against Yusei and Kalin, he quits the Duel and tries to run away, but not before he abandons Barb to her fate and sets off explosives in the town.

I don't know, but using the trope Jerkass as the trope linked to Lawton's name feels really underwhelming.
