Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Two weeks since the finale of Scream: TV Series and now it's time to talk about the latest Ghostface.

For some context, this season begins months after the first seasons finale. Protagonist Emma Duvall has briefly left the town of Lakewood but returns in the first episode of the season, however she suffers from PTSD from surviving a killing spree by her half sister Piper Shaw, who killed half the main cast over the season, but after her death, the presence of an accomplice is revealed and now that accomplice is out for more blood. Not everyone believes Emma that there's a new killer when she spots them, but the killer begins stalking and taunting her friend Audrey, who had a secret connection to Piper.

Also there's new comers in town; the new Sheriff Ascota, who arrives in town with his son following the death of the previous sheriff; Ascota's son Gustavo, an obvious Red Herring who befriends Brooke; Zoe, the new love interest of resident nerd character Noah, whom she is Birds of a Feather with; Emma's estranged father Kevin, a survivor of a killing spree years before the series, and according to a popular fan theory, may have been the actual killer (we'll have to wait a while to find out); there's Hayley, a bitchy teenage girl with an attitude problem; and Emma's boyfriend Kirean's aunt and cousin Eli, who have taken him in and moved to town following his fathers death.

Who is Ghostface ?

Kirean Wilcox, Emma's boyfriend from season one, and a Red Herring for that season but ultimately revealed to have been working with Piper Shaw, the whole time. Kirean is introduced as the new boy in town, a cutie with a shaded past. Most we get out of Kirean is that he was sent to jail in the past and he moved to Lakewood following the deaths of his mother and stepfather, and has moved in with his biological father, Sheriff Clarke Hudson.

As Pipers accomplice, he assisted in the killing spree and is the one who overpowered and kidnapped Will Belmont, Emma's ex boyfriend when he was alone with Piper, setting up the death trap for Emma to trigger that would split him in half. A line in season two implies that he was the Ghostface that killed Audrey's girlfriend Rachel and made it look like a suicide as Audrey mentions hanging out with Piper the night it happened and its later confirmed to be the case. The killing spree also ends with Kieran's father being tortured on a live stream broadcasted at a halloween party. Sheriff Hudson is later found bound to a tree by duck tap, and when it's stripped off him it turns out to be a death trap that literally spills the man's guts when Emma's mother tries to free him.

Piper is killed by Emma and Audrey, but the accomplice has yet to be revealed and takes centre stage in season two...

What Does Ghostface do ?

Not one episode into season two, and Ghostface already kills one of the main cast; he abducts Jake Fitzgerald and tortures him at a barn with a bear trap, before bisecting him with a scythe. In the first few episodes, Ghostface begins to torment Audrey Jensen, who was believed to be Piper's Shaw's accomplice, threatening to blackmail her for her connection to Piper - turns out she didn't assist in the murders, but was the one who called Piper into town, not knowing she's a killer-Ghostface even leads Audrey to Jake's body, and makes a few moves on Emma, but doesn't kill her leaving Emma to question her sanity due to PTSD from the last season. Ghostface also trolls with Jake's girlfriend Brooke, texting her while pretending to be Jake. At one point, Ghostface kills a hotel receptionist Eddie, when he claims that he saw who Piper's accomplice is. Ghostface doesn't reveal himself to the public until a beauty pageant where Brooke ends up winning, and when she does, Ghostface drops Jake's mutilated corpse in front of her.

Paranoia is driven between the characters of course; such as the school being put on lockdown. Police look through the students belongings and question them; a gun is found in Kiren's locker, and the new Sheriff's son Gustavo is caught drawing very graphic pictures, for what's later stated to be a comic book, and is beaten up by the other students. The next episode, Emma, Audrey and Noah have a close call with the killer at an amusement park. In that same episode Seth Branson - former teacher, Piper's scapegoat, and Brooke's jealous ex lover - was tied down and interrogated by Brooke, who suspected him of killing Jake, and left behind. Ghostface finds the tied down Branson, before cutting off his hand and burning the stump with an iron. The next episode, Ghostface uses Branson's phone to lure Brooke and Audrey to the school, where they find not the killer, but Miss Lang who was attacked and thrown down some stairs by the killer, and unconscious. The killer would have finished her off if a janitor hadn't shown up and called the ambulance.

Meanwhile Emma is angry with Kieran because he's working with Sheriff Ascota, who suspects Emma might be the killer due to her psychological issues. She spends time with Kieran's cousin, Eli, who takes her to an abandoned house to put the moves on her. At said house, Eli reveals some tidbits about Kieran's past but the killer shows up and sets the house on fire. Emma and Eli flee, not knowing that a barely alive Branson is in the house, burning to death. When a carnival rolls into town, Kieran and Eli have an argument that comes to blows. Afterwards, Audrey suspects Eli of being the killer because of his behaviour and the fact he has a restraining order from a girl out of town. Kieran is kidnapped (conveniently offscreen) and the killer uses Kieran's phone to send a video to Emma and lures her to a house of mirrors. A deputy tries to help Emma but is thrown into a mirror and killed, but Emma takes his gun and tries to shoot the killer, who makes muffled noises to speak and the police are alerted. The killer stumbles outside the funhouse and is confronted by the police. Emma prepares to shoot but is told to stand down. It's shown the killer has a knife taped to his wrist, and the mask is taken off to reveal Kieran with duck tape around his mouth. When released Kieran tells Emma of how he blames himself for the accident that killed his mother and stepfather as he was arguing with them when their car crashed. Might sound sympathetic at first but we'll get to that when we get to that.

Next episode has Emma discovers Miss Lang, who had been recording sessions with Emma without her knowledge and consent. Emma learns that Lang and Piper where foster sisters in an orphanage and Emma suspects that Lang might have a vendetta against her as the tapes Lang records of herself say that Emma has violent tendencies and that she has an obsession with Piper. Lang is also shaken at the sight of Emma. The discovery of the orphanage ties in when new comer and total biatch Hayley Myers is throwing a party in Emma and Audrey's name. And low and behold she's working with the killer to throw the party and they are nailing each other. At the party Emma and Audrey are lured into a room to discover Piper's corpse. Later Hayley prepares to have sex with the killer, who kills her and strings her corpse up for the police to find. When Piper's body gets a proper autopsy, it's shown to have been stuffed with a pigs heart.

Now here's the example of prime Nightmare Fuel - at least in my opinion - of the whole Scream franchise; When Noah notices his girlfriend Zoe hasn't shown up for class, and receives a text to meet her at a lake, it of course is a Ghostface trap and he gets stabbed in the gut. Emma and Audrey receive a text and a link that shows Noah buried alive in a coffin with a camera on him. Ghostface calls them and gives them hints on where to find Noah before he dies of suffocation. Noah hears a voice outside the coffin sounding like Zoe screaming. Emma and Audrey do find Noah and they find a phone live streaming Zod in a coffin filling with water, screaming for help. They hastily look for where she could be buried and find her coffin in the lake. They pry it open to reveal Zoe is dead and the Zoe screaming on the phone was a recording playing on loop. Ghostface calls Emma and Audrey again saying they will never win.

In the following episode, Noah, now being hospitalized, considers shutting down his podcast, but decides to make a final one to memorialize Zoe; however Ghostface has hacked the podcast with recordings of Emma and Audrey painting them as the killers. As the police see this, Brooke's father Mayor Maddox, is lured to the barn where Jake was killed. Ghostface ambushes him and stabs him through the chest with a pitch fork. Emma and Audrey are also lured there where they find Maddox dead. They hear a noise outside the barn and arm themselves with the murder weapon thinking it's the killer, only to see the police waiting outside.

The finale opens with Emma and Audrey in a cop car. Ghostface appears on the road, the car swerves off the road and crashes into a poll. The cop steps out but Ghostface kills him. Ghostface enters the vehicle and instead of killing them, throws them the keys and demands they play a final game; if they don't, turn themselves in, or get caught, he kills someone they love. This builds up to a confrontation in a theatre, with Emma and Audrey gathering and arming Brooke, Noah and Kieran. The screen plays revealing the other victims killed from the first killing spree. This confirms that the current killer was the one who killed Rachel and Hudson. The killer gets the jump on them and stabs Brooke, and Noah calls for help to get Brooke to the hospital. Kieran tells Emma that Audrey isn't at her post. Emma flees as the police arrive, and Emma receives a video of Audrey lying unconscious in the orphanage. Emma then goes to the orphanage to confront the killer alone. At the orphanage, she finds Kieran and a wounded Eli. Eli claims that Kieran is the killer and that he called the cops when Kieran tried to stab him. He also says that Kieran killed his mother and stepfather on purpose, that the restraining order against Eli was his fault as he lied to a girls mother to get Eli in trouble and posted naked pictures of said girl. When Eli tries to stab Kieran, Emma shoots an incapacitates him. Audrey and Emma becomes suspicious when Kieran says something the killer said before. As Emma realizes Kieran is the killer and begs him to tell her she's wrong.

Kieran smiles and says "You're not wrong". Eli gets back up and Kieran shoots him dead. Kieran explains he was involved with Piper and that they hated the relationship between his father and Emma's mother. He intends to frame Emma and Audrey as the killers once and for all but Audrey distracts Kieran for Emma to make a run for it. Kieran takes Audrey hostage and begins seeking Emma throughout the orphanage. Emma gets the jump on Kieran, stealing his gun and turning the tables. Audrey subdues Kieran with her chain, strangling him and pulling him to a nearby post. Emma takes a gun and presses it to Kieran's head but decides not to kill him as the police. Earlier in the episode, Noah shows evidence to the police that took suspicion off of Emma and Audrey, and going with Eli's tip, Kieran is ultimately arrested, making him the first Ghostface to actually face justice.

As the season ends, we see three months later, Noah is making a podcast revealing Kieran to be the killer, Emma and Audrey on a date (shipper in me: you won't convince me that it's anything else), and Brooke now living with Gustavo and his father. The cliffhanger of the season shows Kieran in prison where he receives a phone call, with a Ghostface voice, to Kieran's surprise, saying "Hello Kieran, who told you you could use my mask ?"

Redeeming Qualities or Freudian Excuse ?

He clearly doesn't love his family; he tortured his father before setting up a death trap to kill him in a gruesome manner. It's mentions that he killed his mother and stepfather. He openly hates his cousin Eli, even before his villain reveal and ultimately kills him and is shown not to care for his aunt before the reveal. He admits his original plan was to torment his father with a case he couldn't solve before killing him.

He clearly doesn't love his friends seeing as he was tormenting and trying to kill them throughout season two and as later revealed, season one; this whole time he was manipulating Emma and planing to kill her and frame her as with Audrey. He tortures Jake before killing him and taunts Brooke with Jake's corpse. He buries Noah alive, making it seem like they could save his girlfriend only to reveal he already killed her. There's his other girlfriend Hayley, who he kills for outliving her usefulness. All the while maintaining a facade of a friendly, if troubled teenager over the course of two seasons.

He also claims to have been in love with Piper and is angry at her death, . Personally I think nothing says "I love you" more than digging up your lovers corpse and stuffing it with a pigs heart. I feel inclined to believe that this love wasn't genuine or at the very least a twisted idea of love and they where both united by being psychopaths akin to Ramsay and Myranda. As far as their relationship was explored Kieran says they got together because of their mutual hatred for his father and Emma's mother. He mentions how it was Piper who showed him that killing was better than therapy and that their killing spree was about tormenting their parents. The extent of how loving their relationship is described is when Kieran mentions to Emma that the surprise for her that "You're boyfriend was banging your crazy half sister." and as Ghostface, says "Love ? To kill with someone, now that's a real bond". All that plus the desecration of Piper's corpse tells me that his love isn't genuine or redeeming.

As far as a Freudian Excuse goes, daddy issues. He is sore about his dad leaving him with his mother and stepfather and since Piper was put up for adoption by Emma's mother, they both hated and resented their parents. He admits he probably should've gotten help, but says that killing is more fun than therapy. In season one, we see his father clearly isn't a bad guy, and while their relationship is shown to be strained he isn't abusive towards Kieran. On top of that Kieran has been framing his cousin Eli since childhood, and there was one incident in the past where he told a girls mother that Eli was stalking her daughter and posted naked pictures of her on the Internet, so it's a safe bet Kieran was evil back then as well.

Heinous Standard

Sets it along with Piper and may exceed her.

Kieran has a higher bodycount that Piper, but that's mostly because he lives longer than her, plus they share blood on each others hands since they worked on the same killing spree together.

Kieran has a confirmed bodycount of eleven putting the first and second killing spree together. He also has the highest bodycount of any previous Ghostface, including Roman Bridger himself. On top of that Kieran is more graphic, torturous and cruel in his killings, using a bear trap and a scythe for one kill, hacking off a mans hand before burning him alive, burying two people alive and revealing that one is already dead.

Conclusion

Kieran is a needlessly cruel and brutal killer, taking to torturing his victims before giving them horrible deaths and psychologically tormenting both his intended victims (his supposed friends) and loved ones. He spent two seasons before his villain reveal, keeping up the ruse that he was a loving boyfriend to Emma and companion to her friends. His only motives amount to hate, mostly for his father, and this hate may possibly extend to his friends considering his cruel attitude towards them as Ghostface, and especially his cousin Eli, who he was openly hostile towards before his villain reveal and has been framing since childhood. The closest he, and Piper, have to an actual redeeming quality was their relationship, which didn't revolve around genuine romantic love, but hate for their families and love for killing. A match made in Hell if I ever saw one.

Ehhhh, I'm not too sure on Lindsay just yet. I'll [tup] Neil Cassidy though.

Also [tup] Kirean Wilcox. If anything, Beast, as of now you've successfully managed to get me to watch this series, because its villains are clearly creative in how evil they are, plus Anyone Can Die, so good job on your part. I may have just spoiled myself in regards to Season 2, but ah well. [lol]

Also hell no to Zoe's death. I'm not claustrophobic, but one of my biggest fears is dying from drowning. Combining being stuck in a coffin and drowning......NO.

Also believe it or not, my mind ended up blowing last night. I know Latif might end up being scratched (which I'm fine with, because even I am still a bit skeptical), but if anything, his effortpost did nothing for me but fully solidify that Tahir is a CM. Now yes, Tahir didn't do anything as evil as Latif, but as I said, he had nowhere near the amount of resources. All he had were the weapons he received from Crawford, plus a Corrupt Politician in his pocket. But here's the thing though: Latif had a reason. Despite every single thing he did, no matter how cruel or possibly over-the-top it was, at least the guy had a reason to do it. And it wasn't one of those shitty Disproportionate Retribution reasons either; he had a fully legitimate, understandable reason for all the chaos he caused.

Tahir does not. He does what he does because he can and/or because he wants to. Tahir lead a group of rebels who kidnap, torture, and kill innocent people, and then bury their bodies in a visibly full mass grave with body parts sticking out the ground. Tahir is shown to be raising Child Soldiers. Tahir kills an innocent woman's fiancé right in front of her, cuts off her ear, then forces her to search through said mass grave to find his body, and then he tries to seduce her. And while he's trying to seduce her, his soldiers are in the process of gang-raping her friend and also innocent doctor, and he doesn't try to stop it, nor does he care. And then he almost cuts her throat open when Stonebridge and the woman's father get the drop on him.

I think it was Ambar who was a bit hesitant on voting on the guy, but (and this is me speaking), Tahir looks even worse than Latif does when comparing their effortposts, because he has no reason for doing what he does, other than enjoyment. And I'm sure if Tahir did have the same amount of resources as Latif, he'd probably be the Big Bad of the show to set the heinous standard.

Anyways, if anyone else wants to vote or weigh in on Latif, you can. As for Tahir, I'll probably go ahead and try to get his write-up out today or tomorrow.

[up] I suppose so. But we'll deal with that after Season 3 comes out.

[down] I thought we mentioned him before and said he didn't count? I've seen that episode before; nothing he really did stood out much. Though I'll admit the way he killed his victims was certainly disturbing.

[up][up] Maybe; though we only have 2 for the show (and it seems like the show's ending).
Also, I'll have to see the episode, but there MAY be another Criminal Minds one. Like Bradstone, it's not the body count, it's the method of killing that may qualify him.
[up] Not sure if he was given a full discussion. Killing several people? Standard villainy for that show. Killing a handful by using their worst fears against them? NOT standard,
[tup] Kieran BTW. Even putting body count aside, the METHODS he uses may make him out-heinous Piper.

I hear there's a TV movie in the works for October anyway. Regardless of what the intention of it is or not.

My penultimate edits on LokSat. One more after this by the end of the week as I should have the season finished then:

  • LokSat, real name Mason Wood, is the Big Bad of the eighth and final season and the Greater-Scope Villain of the series as a whole. A corrupt former government agent and the head of the Greatest Detective Society, it is revealed in the two-part season premiere "XY"/"XX" that he was Senator William Bracken’s silent partner, providing him with the assassins and hitmen he used throughout the series and took part in helping to cover up their crimes as well as Bracken’s. When Beckett's former D.C. team begins looking into finding him, he has four of them killed in a car accident and the fifth one stabbed in a nightclub. He sends assassins after both Beckett and Vikram Singh later on to silence them both. When Bracken is questioned by Beckett on him and later by Castle, LokSat has him brutally murdered in prison. He also frames the investigating Attorney General Allison Hyde as a patsy, has her killed and staged as a suicide to close the investigation into him. He also assisted both Bracken and Vulcan Simmons in their drug operation and keeps it going even after both men are dead. When Beckett is seemingly able to persuade Public Defender Caleb Brown to turn on him, in the series finale "Crossfire" LokSat has his enforcer Mr. Flynn brutally burn an unknown man to death in order to fake Caleb’s death, only sparing Caleb because he’s still useful. He emotionally manipulates and potentially harms Castle’s stepmother Rita for information. He has Flynn abduct Castle and subject him to an extremely potent truth serum, during which Mason personally asks one by one about who else knows about the investigation (including Castle's family), coldly stating his intention to have them all eliminated. He later attempts to ambush Beckett and tries to throw her into an incinerator. When he’s captured, he seems to send Caleb out of spite to shoot and try to kill Castle and Beckett in their own apartment and both nearly die from their wounds while Caleb is killed. Representing the darkest elements of the series, LokSat is most notable as the most dangerous threat the characters have ever faced.
