Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I mean, nobody else has actually taken a look at the fanfic.

Perhaps you should then accept that nobody wants to look at it and stop trying to sell it to a universally disgusted thread.

Shall I just propose the last Dean Koontz monsters I have?

Since I thought we might all need a laugh after this fanfiction argument, I am posting a link to the Protectors of the Plot Continuum takedown of "Ring Child", quite possibly one of the most messed up fanfics I've ever encountered. There will be arguments, much swearing, and typo-produced mass goblin sex. Enjoy; it's hilarious.

[tdown] Definitely, to Mana Ouma, sounds like.

I feel like a change of topic might be best for everyone here. Here's my write-up for Alt! Gul'dan and, just to give us something else less vitriolic to discuss, I'm going to go ahead and make my effort post of Lord Xavius.

Wo W: Warlords of Draenor: Gul'dan from the alternate universe Draenor is the Big Bad of the Warlords of Draenor expansion and just as bad, if not worse, than his main timeline counterpart. While he initially fails to get his fellow orcs to drink the demon blood, Gul'dan quickly makes up for failure by serving as the Burning Legion's vanguard. He sends Cho'gall to Oshu'gun to subjugate the Naaru there, sends Teron'gor to Auchindoun to empower the Shadow Council by devouring the souls of dead Draenei, and he himself tries to cause a volcano to erupt in Shadowmoon Valley. As the Iron Horde falls apart, he takes advantage by finally corrupting his people like his prime counterpart. Victorious at last, Guldan tries to deliver the deathblow to Draenor by destroying its elements with the Cipher of Damnation and siphons the world's lay lines to power a new portal to allow the Legion to arrive in all its might. Regardless of the circumstances provided by a new timeline, Gul'dan proves that he will always be a heartless monster willing to sacrifice everything to gain power.

Think you're tough because you made it through Lord of the Rings? Real men survive The Silmarillion.

I'm a bit bemused by this sudden rush to downvote Mana Ouma. I know we all want to move on after that lengthy argument, but I'm not really sure what actual points are being raised to counter the last discussion on her that voted for her inclusion.

The fact is Mana seems to have been blamed for something she wasn't really responsible for and she might well have impaired agency and be played as a Tragic Villain

Well, with the mlp and pokemon fics taken care of, we should only have a few fics left on the sandbox to take care of before making the swap. The fic A Study In Regret was turned into a book by the author, who is now selling it here:

http://www.amazon.com/A-Study-Regret-Claire-Daines/dp/1780924399

The story can no longer be read on Fanfiction.net. A person will have to either order it or contact the author or one of the customers who reviewed it to find out if Moran really is trying to avenge Moriarty or if it's revenge for Holmes putting him out of a job. I'm not really sure if it still belongs on the Fanworks page still, or if it should be moved to literature.

anyways, I want to propose a pair of main villains from Sha Po Lang II: A time For Consequences

Now, SPL 1 doesn't really have a CM main baddie (his Dragon may be one, but I'm not pursuing that now) as he loves his family. In part 2? hooo boy...I give you Hung man-Kong and Warden Ko Chun

Who Are They?

Mr Hung is the mastermind of a crime syndicate that our hero, Kit, is sent to infiltrate. Now, Hung runs a scheme by sending victims to Ko Chun's prison. What happens there? The victims are killed and their organs harvested to be sold on the black market. Now, Mr. Hung has a bad heart condition in a spot of cosmic and karmic irony...he needs a donor, but he has such a rare type that nobody matches. Except his brother. See where this one's going?

Kit breaks cover to save his fellow cops who try to save Hung's brother. Hung sends Kit to the prison to serve 'life' there, where he meets Ko Chun who gleefully participates in the organ trade and brutally asserts dominance over prisoners by beating and torturing them if they put a toe out of line. One of the honest guards, Chatchai, ends up siding with Kit. When Chatchai helps Kit and his comrades, Ko Chun has him tortured.

Hung, meanwhile, has his brother's protectors slaughtered, has him dragged to an operating table and asks if he has any last words. When the poor guy begs his brother to let him live, Hung just says "can't help you with that one." and orders his heart harvested. Kit interferes, though, and stops the operation. Hung attempts to kill his brother himself to get at his heart, but his condition overcomes him and he dies in...extreme terror. Ko Chun, meanwhile, ends up fighting the heroes and trying to kill them. Ko Chun manages to knock Kit out the window, but Kit manages to grab Ko Chun's tie, hanging onto it as he dangles out of the window, strangling him.

So, all in all, the two of them are murderers and the highest ranking members of a syndicate which has people killed, tortured and has their organs extracted for a quick buck. A lot of people have gone through the organ ring to say the least. While Ko Chun is technically a subordinate to Hung, he operates with autonomy and treats the prison as his personally little kingdom.
