Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

By the way, here's the write-up for Edward Wade I never posted. The original vote was 6[tup]-2[tdown] but the general consensus was that it was enough.

Hitman: Absolution: Edward Wade is a former Columbian cartel member, long time acquaintance of Blake Dexter, and all around disgusting human being. Dexter hires Wade, along with Dexter's son Lenny, to track down and kidnap Victoria so that he can sell her for a ransom. Wade goes out of his way to make the mission as horrifying for everyone as possible. Wade constantly insults and degrades the mentally challenged Lenny by calling him limp-dick Lenny. Wade learns of Victoria's whereabouts by getting Birdie to sell out Agent 47 and, upon finding out she is sick at an orphanage, gleefully decides to abduct her by force. He has his mercenaries invade the orphanage and kill every staff member and nun there, and even threatens to kill his own men if they refuse. He goads Lenny into accidentally killing the head nun and then mocks him when he breaks down in terror. In their final confrontation, should Wade win, he tells a dying 47 that he will rape his corpse. Even in his dying breath, Wade mockingly asks 47 why he has an erection. In a series filled with asshole victims, Wade stands out as the most evil and petty.

A little more backstory on the whole "created evil" thing. All of the Makuta race were made slightly more deceptive and violent than the other creations. However, none of the Makuta race even contemplated betraying Mata Nui and bacoming tyrants until Teridax took control and manipulated them into doing it.

Now, there is a slight thing I overlooked in my initial effortpost. "The Great Beings," the overseers of the universe, foretold among themselves that Teridax and Mata Nui would re-unite the universe together. However, what they didn't foretell was how it would come to pass. Teridax did indeed play a part in re-uniting the universe, by being the one to drive it apart further, which lead to Mata Nui "re-uniting" the universe.

See, the series has this thing about"destiny." In general, it states that, "We all have a final destiny, but we oursleves make the choices to how it, and the rest of our life, plays out."

In fact, there exists an alternate reality of the BIONICLE universe we see, where everything is different and relatively peaceful, because Teridax chose to NOT be a huge Jerkass.

So, while Teridax's "final destiny," to assist Mata Nui in "re-uniting" the universe is set in stone, he makes the choices that lead it to that specific conclusion (The conclusion where he dies and he was the one to drive the universe apart)

[up]Yeah, I was looking through the episode guide thinking to myself, "Sheesh, trying to spread a virus thoughout a city is a pretty heinous act. Am I missing something?" lol

@ACW: I know you're normally the one to approve Complete Monster quotes, so what do you think of the ones I proposed? Any of them any good?

I see. I remember him having GDV vibes when I was into Bionicle back when it first came out, but I think the later eras changed his personality up a bit. Changing vote to yes.

Also I believe this marks the first unanimous example in a LONG time counting Ambar and Existed votes. Almost every example has been down voted by at least one person.

Ok now that I have 6 [tup] and 0 [tdown] I shall do my draft for Segai Waltz Makoto. Here it goes!

Guilty Crown: Segiai Waltz Makoto is a Major in the GHQ Anti-Bodies and the Dragon to Shuichiro Keido. He is first introduce into the series torturing a defenseless women and in that same scene also has him "talking" to a man that he hanged. With the help of a student, he captures and arrests Shu Ouma, the series protagonist. He later tries to manipulate Shu to turn against Funeral Parlor, but when Shu retorted by saying that people were killed right infront of his eyes by "you people", Segai simply replies that they were unregistered citizens. Shu then asks if that was a good reason to kill them, however Segai doesn't seem to care. When Funeral Parlor rescue Shu and Shu activates his powers, a sniper tries to stop him, only for Segai to callously shoot him. Segai doesn't do this because he cares for Shu, he does it so that he can see Shu's powers for himself claiming it to be "more important that your life" and "beautiful". He later leads an assault on one of the last Funeral Parlor strongholds, just so he can see Shu regain the Power of the Kings and the destruction it creates. He also tries to help Keido accomplish his twisted goals by spreading the Apocalypse Virus through a radio tower, in an attempt to kill millions of people. His last act of malevolence is trying to kill Ayase, a girl who is in a wheelchair, by hitting her with a truck before Shu grabs a hold of him and ends the bastard's life.

Segai write-up looks good bar a few minor grammar errors, but good ol' ACW will fix that up when he submits it.

@Klavice: I hope I explained the whole "destiny" thing good enough. I didn't mention it in the initial effort post because it was so confusing. It really wasn't a huge potential mitigating factor or anything, it's just really hard to explain to someone who hasn't been following the franchise.

If no one objects, I'll get started on Teridax's write-up within the next few hours.

  • For Sven, if the show isn't TOO trippy, he probably can count.
  • If Segai does indeed release the virus, I'll [tup] him. What's his ultimate goal?
  • As for the quotes...I...actually like ALL of them.
  • If you guys could, could you please put Kilobot, Segai, Wade, Amascut, Tayama, and Teridax (when it's done) on their respective YMMV pages? It'd make things easier for me. Thanks in advance smile.

Alright, here goes...something.

BIONICLE: Makuta Teridax is the Big Bad of the franchise as a whole, and is responsible for nearly every bad thing that happens. Starting out as a member of The Brotherhood of Makuta, Teridax coerced his teammates into betraying their master, Mata Nui, then infected him with a virus. After Mata Nui succumbs to the virus and falls into a coma, causing innumerable amounts of destruction across the Cosmos, Teridax plans to erase the memories of an island of Matoran, then play himself up as their Savior. When the Toa, the heroes of the Matoran, try to free them from Teridax, he tries to kill them all before being sealed away. Eventually escaping, Teridax begins a centuries' long war against the Toa, at one point releasing the omnicidal Bohrok, who attempt to wipe out thousands of innocents. Teridax influences the Piraka into finding the Mask of Life, to which The Spirit of Mata Nui is bound, and they commit numerous atrocities while under Teridax's manipulation. Teridax assists the Toa in finding The Mask, knowing one of them will have to sacrifice themselves to keep The Spirit of Mata Nui alive. Teridax then reveals he played them all, takes control of Mata Nui's body, acheives godhood, then flings Mata Nui into space. Teridax goes on to murder his former allies, wage war against the remaining Toa, and subject any rebels who try to stop him, or minions who anger him, to horrific punishments. Traveling to the planet Mata Nui has been residing on, Teridax's last act is trying to blow it up just to spite him. While Teridax's final destiny was pre-ordained, his villainous actions only worsened his and the universes' fate. Teridax was a monstrous and sadistic sociopath whose god-complex cost millions their lives and ruined countless more throughout his 100,000-year campaign of evil.

@ACW:

1. How does the write-up look now?

2. I'll make sure to add Kilobot and Teridax to their respective YMMV pages after you've worked your magic on them.

3. What should we do regarding the quotes?

  • MUCH better. A bit on the long side, but most definitely doable if it can't be trimmed further.
  • Actually, could you please add them now? It makes tweaking them easier (adding the potholes in Word is a bit of a pain).
  • I guess the quotes can just be added.

With all my Runescape candidates finally finished, I can move on to my next effort post. The next one will be on Lheu Brenin from Lord of the Rings Online. I'm sure many people will be surprised that the most evil character from that game is a mere mortal man. Look forward to it later today.
