Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I think Dickson is 7-1 now with Scraggle's vote with Ambar being the only one opposed, though with this new information about him not having an APV moment, it might change his mind.

Maybe we could wait on a few more votes for Dickson before we submit it.

IMO, we have enough to keep Esther. Dickson...I don't quite think we have a consensus on keeping him.

  • King Arthur: Cerdic, the warchief of the Saxons, is a brutal Blood Knight leading his forces across Britannia to destroy all in their paths. First seen amongst a burnt out village, Cerdic stops a Saxon from raping a woman simply because such a coupling would 'water down' their Saxon blood and promptly kills the soldier when he protests before he orders the woman killed anyways. Cerdic promptly orders his men to rampage across Britain with explicit instructions to leave behind no man, woman or child who can even carry a sword. In the final battle with Arthur, Cerdic sends his men on a diversion that will get them killed and roars they are his men when his son Cynric protests the decision. During the battle, Cerdic viciously kills Sir Galahad after making certain Arthur can see the fight, having decided earlier Arthur is the only man worth killing.

  • {{Film/The Warrior's Way}}: The nameless Colonel is a vicious warlord who preys on isolated towns. A Serial Rapist who fancies women with healthy teeth, the heroine's flashback shows the Colonel selecting her, killing her father when he tries to interfere and then shooting the heroine when she throws hot grease in his face. For good measure he guns down her mother and young brother. In present, the now hideously disfigured Colonel continues his activities. He tortures a clown by having objects put on his head and having his men shoot at them, drags the town drunk through town on a horse with a rope around his neck and selects a woman for his pleasure. When the woman's husband protests, the Colonel guns them both down and selects their daughters. When the heroine finally manages to impale him after he attempts to rape and kill her, the Colonel's final words are that he'll see her in hell and he hopes she wears "something nasty."

  • Orphan: Esther is adopted by the Coleman family after their newest child is stillborn. Esther pushes a bully off a slide causing her to break her ankle, tries to play Russian Roulette with the young daughter Max, kills a nun who is suspicious of her, threatens to castrate the family's son Daniel if he tells anyone about what he saw, reads a page describing how the mother Kate's latest child was stillborn to her out loud (and presents Kate with the stillborn kid's dedication bouquet as a "gift"), and tries to cause a rift in Kate's marriage with John. When Daniel attempts to retrieve evidence proving Esther killed the nun, Esther sets the place on fire to try and kill him, and later tries to smother him at the hospital. It's later revealed that Esther is a dwarf posing as a child, is really named Leena Klammer, and killed two previous families that adopted her after failing to seduce the father, and was planning to kill the rest of the family to have John to herself. When John refuses her advances, she kills him and attempts to kill Max when she sees this. When Kate and Esther fall into a frozen lake and Kate manages to pull herself out, Esther begs Kate to save her yet has a knife behind her back clearly intending to murder Kate if she decided to rescue her.

Did we ever discuss Ardos from Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness? I did a search, but it was tough to pin point where he was talked about on here.

My guess is that he was discussed and voted down on.

Klavice Since: Jan, 2011

Ardos is even less heinous than Ghetsis. The most he does is try to blow up an island with a 13 year old boy and many mooks on it. While that is pretty dickish, he doesn't do nearly as much as Nascour or even Evice did in Colosseum. We can't really qualify any of the members of Cipher because there really is no boss that orders these things, and if there is, he always shows up at the very end of the game making most of his crimes off screen. If they actually showed a Cipher member torturing and morphing the Pokemon into Shadow Pokemon, then maybe I'd vote for their leader. But compared to the current CM Pokemon villains, (the anime ones anyway) I feel Cipher is pretty small time. They don't even stand up to Darkrai or Purple Eyes. Show, Don't Tell is in effect here. You could say Satan murdered millions of innocents, devoured their souls, and killed Jesus, but if his crimes aren't shown on screen, he doesn't qualify.

[up]I don't even know who Ardos is (I have very little knowledge of Pokemon beyond the core games), but I have to point out that the anime and games aren't in the same continuity.

Yeah, Leena Klammer (esther' s real name) is a bitch. One moment that might be worth adding to the write up, is when she presents Kate with the flowers of her stillborn daughter as a "gift".

No member of Cipher counts. As a group, yes, they're despicable, but groups don't count.

I'd also like to note that Ghetsis I feel people demonize him way too much to be the worst character in the series. They forget the fact that villains try for the total extermination of mankind as a common goal (Purple Eyes, Cyrus, Lysandre, Matt/Courtney, hell even some of the Legendaries). I know he's been thoroughly debunked, and feel free to call me out on raising a dead point, but I just cannot get over the fact some people consider this guy pure and utter evil when he's really not much more heinous than a Saturday morning cartoon villain.

I'd say Ein or Evice might count. Particularly Ein, since he's behind the whole shadow pokemon project, and shows no redeeming qualities as far as I know.

Dickson's votes... Yes: Me, Toivia, Overlord, randomtroper89, Tyk, Lightysnake, LordXavius, Scraggle (formerly no)

No: Very Melon, Ambar

So I'd suggest we get a few more votes before we start adding the writeup to the actual Video Games page.

^Discussion on Dickson's supposed APV moment, which was proved not to be an APV moment at all

Sadly, I don't have a link to Dickson's writeup, because I couldn't find it, but that should be enough to get a more clear consensus.

[up][up][up] Those are the exception rather than the rule, of course. It's easier to just compare to the generic "Whiplash" persona than bring up the scarce handful of animated Monsters we have know. As for Ghetsis, much the same thing. He's devoid of altruistic qualities, but on the surface he's little more than a green-haired, cane-toting Dastardly Whiplash going "Nyeh nyeh I'm a jackass" and tying poor little N to a train track.

With that, I rest my case before I get too out of hand with the whimsy, and because I'd like to stop going on about Ghetsis. I'd like for another opinion on Rico; he's 4-2 (Austin also gave a [tup] vote, but it was on another website that it was agreed on and I won't officially count it yet). I also might try my hand at rewriting Malachite and Jackal soon.

I will yes to Rico. I will say yes to the Gothika villains, Vykos and the serial killer couple from Running Scared.

I have a question, at what point does Narm prevent a work from having a Complete Monster? Last Alert is a video game where one of the villains tries to destroy humanity, it also features some of the worst voice acting in video game history and a "Blind Idiot" Translation when the game was translated from Japanese to English. I wonder if despite the villain's very heinous deed, if the whole game is too Narmy to take seriously. I think the game made more sense in Japanese, though it was likely a cliched action movie story rather then the unintentional comedy it became in the West.

Speaking of having characters we were considering bringing up, anybody else here familiar with the League of Assassins/Council of Spiders arc from Red Robin? I was thinking of bringing up The Wanderer, but was wondering if others who know the storyline thought she'd be worth discussing in the first place.

Her unbelievably godawful backstory strikes me as....a somewhat valid Freudian Excuse honestly. That she snapped so hard from it is pretty understandable.

But propose her. I'd like to see everyone's thoughts.

After this week's episode of Gravity Falls, I think Preston Northwest seems like a good candidate. While the Northwest family has consisted of bastards for centuries, he's the only one we've seen in action. He knew full well that a ghost was going to haunt his family's party and manipulated Pacifica into getting Dipper to help exorcise it. We learn in that episode that Pacifica complies with his orders out of fear. When the ghost is continues haunting the mansion, he'd rather risk the lives of the party goers for the sake of his family's reputation. You'd think it'd end here, but the end of the episode heavily implies that he's involved with Bill Cipher.

35778: We have a character from Manos: The Hands of Fate for crying out loud. I think that says it all [lol]. As long as the character him/her/itself is played seriously, we have a contender.
[nja]And apparently Strike Commando is quite Narmy as well.

Current Dickson writeup BTW:

  • Dickson starts the game off as a seemingly helpful mentor and father figure to our protagonists, particularly Shulk and Dunban. This all changes after Shulk refuses to kill Egil after defeating him. Dickson shows up and shoots Shulk in the back, releasing his master Zanza, the true Big Bad. He then reveals that he's Zanza's disciple, and never cared at all for the people of Bionis, acting only to ensure Zanza was properly revived - then assist in his wishes to kill off everyone so he can enact the destruction/reconstruction of the world. Dickson tries to finish off the party with an army of Telethia, gleefully asserting that he's not brainwashed when they propose he is. When the High Entia army shows up to save the heroes, he and fellow disciple Lorithea convert them all into mindless Telethia, including Melia's brother, Kallian, whose remarks to his sister whilst transforming they promptly mock. Shortly after this, Dickson arrives in Colony 6 (now the residence of the surviving people of Bionis) with more Telethia, hoping to exterminate them all. He further taunts Melia, mocking her brother by proposing he might be her boyfriend in the next life. Ultimately, he reveals his motivation for his actions is that he wants to have the powers of a god in the next world. Thus, he willingly helps Zanza's atrocities with a sadistic smile on his face, no regrets or remorse, only feeling fear when it's hinted Shulk might be stronger than Zanza.
