Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So here's something interesting: Apparently the Genesis Universe is part of Marvel. So should it go to the Marvel page for other continuities?

Also, apparently the Ultraverse is Earth-93060, so I better add that page to the Marvel page for examples with their own pages.

Found a couple of Complete Monster wicks on Adaptational Nice Guy for a few characters from The Boys. They're not listed, and I don't think they were ever approved.

I haven't read the comics, so anyone else care to weigh in?

@ACW I guess so. I was gonna say no since we didn't do the same Ultraverse which is also own by Malibu, but I guess put it in other continuities.

I added the main Ultraverse to Marvel for works with their own pages. Turns out it's official.

Any other Malibu Comics works that are part of Marvel?

I have no idea, however Street Fighter (Malibu Comics) of all things could be part of the Genesis verse. I say Could be, because Ferret who is a member of the Protectors and classic Wolverine Wannabe makes a guest appearance in the last issue fighting one of the characters and the narrative states this takes place after his miniseries ended.

Edit and does anyone oppose me attempting to rewrtie Savanti? For context this is his current:

  • Savanti Romero, who would become one of the most powerful recurring foes the Turtles ever faced, started off as an assistant to Lord Simultaneous, a powerful wizard that controls the flow of time. Growing jealous of Simultaneous, Romero attempts to erase him from time. However, Simultaneous discovers Romero's treachery and transforms him into a goat demon before banishing him to 13th century Europe, where Romero takes over a village and makes it into his own fiefdom. Simultaneous's new assistant, Renet, accidentally teleports herself and the Turtles to Romero's village, where Romero manages to steals Simultaneous's time scepter from Renet. After the villagers rebel against Romero, Romero uses the scepter's power to create an army of the undead and orders them to slaughter the rebelling villagers. Simultaneous appears and banishes Romero to the Cretaceous period. Later, Romero appears, obsessed with revenge, and lures Renet and the Turtles to the Cretaceous period. After defeating Renet and the Turtles, Romero reveals his new plan: To sacrifice Renet as part of a spell that will cause the comet that wipes out the dinosaurs to miss Earth, causing humanity to cease to exist. The Turtles defeat Romero and he seems to have died, but he was merely frozen in time and reemerges in 12th century Japan. There, Romero attempts to build a new empire and plans to wipe out any Japanese clans that oppose him, which wipes out their descendants in the present. The Turtles travel to medieval Japan and defeat Romero again. After a long absence, Romero appears again, traveling to limbo and planning to use an artifact called the Aga-Moo-Tou to make himself into a god and remake reality in his own image.

I think I got another possible candidate from the Genesis Universe.

What's The Work?

Ex Mutants is a comic series taking place After the End, the world in ruins in the year 2055 after a nuclear war. The world is dominated by mutants, but the cyborg scientist Dr. Kildare seeks to restore civilization, saving a bunch of mutant slaves from the tyrannical Sluggo, he transform them back to humans (hence the name, Ex-Mutants) as part of his plan to restore civilization while acting as a father figure to them.

The team consist of Dillon, the acting leader of the group. Ackroyd, the muscle for the team, Bud who is basically the comic relief as well as the archer. There's also the female members, Tanya, Shannon and Piper, with Tanya going back in time to see Kildare when he was human before the nuclear apocalypse occurred.

The Ex-Mutants had crossovers with other works by Malibu, such as Dinosaurs-For-Hire and during the Crisis Crossover with them and The Protectors, they became part of the Protectors universe with two of its members joining the superhero team. After the big crossover, the team gain superpowers of their own. Now onto the Starter Villain.

Who Is Sluggo?

The egotistical tyrant of Slugtown and Big Bad of the first three issues, who looks like the rejected cousin of Jabba the Hutt. Sluggo runs his town through mass enslavements of other mutants, puts them through backbreaking labor building monuments while receiving harsh lashings from his minions but that's not all. He has slave collars with explosives, so if any mutant slaves make any mistake no matter how minor, he has their heads explode with one slave stated he has done so before after killing his third slave.

In other cases, when he's bored he puts them through gladiator matches forcing his slaves to fight each other to the death for his amusement, or have them face his goons. Then, he'll have have them face off monsters to be eaten all for sadistic pleasure. The Ex-Mutants were once slaves to Sluggo, force to fight in his arena that end up killing one of their companions named Josh until Kildare saved them. The dude is also a smug dick who is constantly abusive towards his right-hand Zygote, beating him around whenever he thinks Zygote is acting foolish and always threatening to kill him.

He has Zygote enslaving more mutants to add to his "Empire", but once the Ex-Mutants became a nuisance he send mercenaries to hunt them down, with the Mercenaries killing multiple people at a pup until they encounter some of the Ex-Mutants. The mercenaries give the members such as Dillon, Bud and Piper a mind control device to be under his control. He puts them in the arena for them to be killed by his minions until the other members of the team came to rescue them. Tired of their interference, he orders Zygote to have them all killed, with Zygote using the mind control device to force half of the members to try to kill the other half, until the control to the device were broken.

Sluggo decided it's best for him to escape, and screws Zygote over by throwing him off the balcony of the arena to fend for himself, while he makes his escape. However, once he enters his inner-sanctum, he learns that his "magic machine" that powers his monument, causing an explosion that "killed" Sluggo. Though he does return in an epilogue of Genesis somehow surviving, but still gets a Curb-Stomp Battle by the combine forces of the Protectors and the Ex-Mutants.

Mitigating Factors

My biggest concern? He can be comedic, but I don't think they're enough to distract him imo. His slavery is horrific, with Dr. Kildare showing disgust on the treatment of the mutant slaves at the hands of Sluggo, the series is very much capable of taking itself seriously especially post Genesis. The slavery isn't played for laughs either, you could say the case with his Zygote being comedic but everything else? Nah. So yeah, I don't think that's too much of a problem. He's not played as a bumbling, goofy comedic bad guy Played for Laughs by others like say 80s cartoon Cobra Commander (honestly the guy is a lot worse than him).

Other than that, no redeeming qualities. Dude lives and breathes on It's All About Me egotism and narcissism along with being a mere hedonistic Smug Snake. Mutants are capable of agency obviously, some are good and/or capable of reforming like Zygote.

Heinous Standards

I say he pass, he's the reason I decided not to do Wisecrack next (and boy I wish I could do Wisecrack). Sluggo's slavery is a lot more explicit and horrific, slaves are outright killed left and right, usually from his Gladiator Games where they are fed to monsters or force to battle each other to the death, they are force to work hard or be killed through their slave collars. He stands out easily.

Wisecrack we only see his slavery for a bit, we see his demonic minions whip a few slaves and we know it was bad enough it cause a woman trauma that she nearly killed herself, and he tortures one of the heroes to death and plans to do the same to another but I ain't sure that's enough especially compared to what Sluggo does. Extreme's enslavement of survivors of his conquest don't really show what happens to them afterwards either so no issues there.

The other bad guys in Ex-Mutants don't count, Nathaniel Gelson is a Tragic Villain who was horribly experimented on by his horrible father (who doesn't count either because he genuinely loves his son despite the deadly experiments), everyone else is not heinous enough and the final antagonist Cybernet: Who nearly robotized Dillon and plans to eradicate all superpowered beings, is someone I'm unsure of because his goal is to build a Utopia where Humans and Machines work synchronicity which makes him sound like a WIE.

Final Verdict

Eh, I'll leave it up to you to decide.

Yes to The Great Question, Amos Burton, Adrian de Moxica, Extreme, Mr Monday, Doji Night-Plague, Lepka, and Sluggo

I got one, The Long Long Holiday is a seemingly cute French cartoon series with Tintin artwork.....set in Nazi-occupied France. This series is set in the town of Grangeville during the Occupation.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WesternAnimation/TheLongLongHoliday

The German soldiers either have redeeming traits or are not heinous enough, but that can't be said for some of the Frenchmen who decide to collaborate with the Germans:

Who is Durand? What has done?

Durand starts off as a background character but becomes more prominent over time. When the Germans occupy Grangeville, Durand praises Field Marshall Petain for bringing order to France after the defeat. A local group of children forms a club called the Robinsons (after Robinson Crusoe) that quickly becomes a resistance group, even having a clubhouse in the woods. The Robinsons find a wounded British soldier and hide him at their club.

One of the Robinsons is singing a song in English and Durand tries to turn him and his family into the Germans, but the German commander, Colonel Von Kreiger, dismisses that nothing, but the Germans almost find a watch the British soldier gave the children, but a kind-hearted German soldier named Otto hides it.

Later Durand finds a Jewish teenager named Fernand Geber who refuses to wear the Star of David and turns him into the Germans. He is taken by the Germans and sent to a death camp.

Durand spends most of the rest of the series trying to root out "traitors" and Jews in town. When a young Jewish girl named Rosie is forced to wear the Star of David, the rest of the class wears the Star of David to support Rosie, Durand attempts to inform the French police of this, but the children manage to hide the stars before the police arrive. Later Durand accuses the teacher, Mr. Herpin of spreading anti-German propaganda to his students. Krieger has all the students open their bags and one of the Robisons, Collette, has a map of sabotage targets in her bag. The other Robinsons crumple up papers and throw them at Durand, allowing Collette to hide the map. Krieger arrests Mr. Herpin anyway. The resistance frees Herpin, turns out he is the leader of the resistance in the town.

The adults of the resistance start using the clubhouse as well. Durand finds the clubhouse and informs the Germans. The Germans go there, intending to kill everyone there, the kids escape, but Mr. Herpin is killed. The Canadians liberate the town and the Germans flee. Durand is executed by the resistance.

Is he heinous by the standards of the story?

Krieger is in charge, but he seems to have genuine friendly moments that make him not count, he seems a bit like a Punch-Clock Villain. Another soldier Hans is pretty slimy, he steals food to sell on the black market and tried to take a family hostage until Otto killed him, but Hans is not heinous enough and Otto turns against the Nazis. Durand tried to get a group of children killed several times, being in the resistance is a death sentence no matter the age, and turns in a Jewish teenager to the Nazis, who ends up getting killed. That is pretty vile for a nobody who just rats on people.

Any Freudian Excuse or other Redeeming factors?

Non, he is just a slimy Nazi collobrator. He has some moments of being humiliated by the Robinsons, but his actions are serious enough to count.

Final Verdict?

Mais Oui.
