Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Oh, so My Hero Academia: Vigilantes wrapped up a while back and Kuin Hachisuka is in a big need of an update. It's 248 words and has new crimes not yet added, so... here's a rewrite.

  • Queen Bee, a.k.a. Kuin Hachisuka, is a Quirk-using queen bee and a dealer for the dangerous drug Trigger. Having critically wounded the wife of the hero Knuckle Duster and possessed his daughter Tamao, Queen Bee proceeds to infect innocent civilians with Trigger, causing painful rampages. Queen Bee then convinces the vigilante Stendahl to murder delinquents, causing a passenger-filled bus to crash and infecting one of her friends, Queen Bee then attempts to infect an entire concert with Trigger and tries to detonate explosive-filled bees when cornered and kill Tamao out of spite for her father. Upon barely surviving, the remaining Queen Bee infects and possesses the hero Kazuho Haneyama, driving her mad and causing her to become "Bee Pop" and go on a bombing rampage with full intent to murder as many civilians as she possibly can to get the attention of the heroic Koichi. Aiming to kill countless civilians and be remembered while also ruining the lives of Koichi and Kazuho, Queen Bee proves her deadly influence exists even long after her supposed "death."

Looking at Monster. One Piece, I don't see why Kuro has a longer writeup then much more important characters

Original

  • "Kuro" arc: The titular Captain Kuro "of a Thousand Plans", aka Klahadore, was once a feared pirate running from the existence of bounty hunters and marines. As a result, Kuro hatched a scheme by slaughtering every marine on a ship—save one—and has his henchman Jango hypnotize a crew member and the surviving marine to make them think they were Captain Kuro and his captor, leading to the execution of the fake Kuro. After fleeing to Sugar Island, he disguised himself as a butler of a kind and sickly girl named Kaya after her parents died. It was revealed that Kuro plotted to have his former crew arrive and slaughter the island while he'd have Kaya hypnotized to write him as the beneficiary of her will before he murdered her. After Kaya bought him a gift of new glasses, Kuro heartlessly crushed them and attempted to kill her other servant. When Kaya said she'd have just given him the money, he admitted he just wanted her dead for the sake of his ego. Kuro was also planning on killing his crew to complete his disappearance and when, fighting Luffy, used an attack that led to them being nearly massacred by him.

  • "Syrup Village" arc: The titular Captain Kuro "of a Thousand Plans", aka Klahadore, was once a feared pirate running from bounty hunters and marines. Kuro hatched a scheme by slaughtering every marine on a ship, save one, and then has a crew member hypnotized to be executed in his place. After fleeing to Sugar Island, he disguised himself as a butler of a kind and sickly girl named Kaya. It was revealed that Kuro plotted to have his former crew arrive and slaughter the island. He planned to have Kaya hypnotized to write him as the beneficiary of her will before he murdered her, despite that she'd have just given him the money. While fighting Luffy, Kuro used an attack that led to his crew being nearly massacred by him, as he was already planning to kill them to complete his disappearance.

For the record the Syrup Village arc is 20 chapters and 10 episodes, the Fishman Island arc is 51 chapters and episodes, and the Punk-Hazard arc 46 chapters and episodes.

So it turns out I don't have to wait for as long as I thought to bring up this candidate; the attraction's been open for about three weeks now and it was just that the videos/images were taking a while to come out. So, for my second Halloween Horror Nights candidate:

What's the work?

Universal Horror Hotel is one of the latest and greatest haunted attractions at Universal's Halloween Horror Nights 2022. Unlike some others where the story is told through supplementary material or narration, this one is told via newspaper articles that guests can read in the queue (and are handily transcribed online). The story told is one of murder and chaos, starring...

Who is Maxie Deville? What has he done?

Maximilian "Maxie" Deville (no relation) was a charming "drugstore cowboy" who seduced and married Lillian Van Horn, heiress to the Van Horn Family Oil Business, in 1921. Using the money he inherited, Deville opened up the Hotel Universal, a ritzy Hollywood Hotel meant to cater to all of Hollywood's elite. The hotel entertained guests for just over a month before tragedy struck, with two maids having seemingly committed double suicide in the hotel: one hung from her neck in the elevator shaft, the other found with her head in an oven. Over the next two years, the hotel would be subject to a series of strange and gruesome deaths, including a daredevil falling to his death after the tightrope he was walking between the hotel and the neighboring building was cut, a rodeo star seemingly falling and hitting his head on a sink, and a newspaper columnist drowning in the swimming pool. In 1924, Lillian's mother Mildred (who opposed her daughter's marriage to Maxie) was found dead in a hotel bathtub, a radio having fallen into her water and electrocuting her to death. These events lead the hotel to obtain the nickname "Horror Hotel".

One month later, a fire broke out in Maxie and Lillian's room, with Lillian burned to death. Maxie himself was burned across one side of his entire body, which he claimed was from him attempting to save his wife from the flames. However, with this latest death, the police finally began to suspect Maxie of the murders. After a long trial, Maxie was found guilty of all the murders, which found that he was also responsible for the deaths of several other past wives. Dubbed the "Terror of Tinseltown" and the "Devil of Angel City", Maxie was sentenced to death via gas chamber. As the gas was turned on, Maxie began laughing hysterically, admitting to the murders and cryptically swearing to return. He died in the gas chamber and was cremated.

Decades later, in present day, the Hotel Universal was refurbished and opened once again to the public. This proves to be a grave mistake, as the ghosts of Maxie Deville and his victims are back as well, and Maxie wants revenge.

Across the attraction, guests will see the various ghosts of the victims, forced to experience the moments of their deaths over and over, including the hanging maid suffocating in the elevator shaft, the maid in the kitchen with her sickly appearance and smoking oven, Mildred screaming as she is electrocuted in the bathtub, and the charred Lillian popping out as a jumpscare throughout. But showing off his past victims is not enough for Maxie. As guests go through the attraction, they bear witness to Maxie killing and torturing some of the modern-day visitors, including a woman having hotel keys stabbed into her eyes, a woman with her eyes gouged out while standing next to the corpse of her child, another woman decapitated, a cleaning cart full of heads, and a body burned and charred in the same room where Lillian died. All the while, a symbol resembling the All-Seeing Eye is scrawled across walls and doors in blood, with Maxie himself popping out all over the place, laughing and attacking guests with a knife.

A passageway to the hotel's basement reveals a body having been cut up and hidden in luggage, with a pile of luggage behind that. Once in the basement, we finally learn what's been going on: Maxie is the leader of a pagan cult, who perform ritual sacrifices in the hotel's basement. On top of the cult members now attacking guests, Maxie is shown ripping the still-beating heart from a woman. A hole in one of the walls reveals a plethora of bodies stashed, with Maxie heard laughing as a cultist jumps out and makes the guests his next sacrifices.

Heinous standard?

Sets it. We see a little of the cult he leads, but they have no personality other than also being killers. Maxie is seen doing all the dirty work, and any of the deaths not physically seen are still attributed to him.

Mitigating factors?

Nope. Has no love for his wives (despite his claims during the trial), willing to kill anyone who gets in his way, kills for both money and for the sake of his cult, and has nothing even remotely redeeming or moral. Goes without saying there's also plenty of story; tons of lore in both the scenery and the aforementioned newspaper articles, which tell Maxie's entire backstory. Easily one of the most story-driven haunted attractions I've ever seen.

Verdict

Big [tup] from me. I think this is one of my favorite haunts I've come across, especially with how they handle the storytelling aspect.

For the kuro trim I'm gonna wait for someone who's familiar with the series to give their opinion but if he's got less appearances under his belt I'm not gonna disagree with it.

Also this never went anywhere despite being brought up? This could be a cut?

No to the Remaros and the Aldrich expansion. Big yes to Ima (Great work man!), Maxie and I know the Queen Bee original writeup, yes to Riley's change and yes to the Kuro condensing.

If you want it N here's the current, definitely needs to lose some weight imo:

  • Complete Monster: Kuin Hachisuka is a Quirk-using queen bee, and dealer for the dangerous Quirk-enhancing drug, Trigger. Prior to the story, Kuin critically wounded the wife of Knuckle Duster and invaded the mind of his daughter, Tamao Oguro. Using Tamao as a host, Kuin regularly invaded homes and murdered their residents to take them over, regularly changing homes to find more victims whenever she got bored. Kuin introduces herself by using her Quirk, Queen Bee, to infect several innocent civilians with Trigger, causing them to go on rampages while in constant pain. She later convinces the ruthless vigilante Stendhal to attempt to murder young delinquents who previously used the drug. For no reason other than her amusement, Kuin attempts to cause a bus filled with passengers to crash, complaining about how boring it would be if there were no victims when the hero Ingenium saves them. She also uses her bees to possess a classmate she befriended, having them burst out of her body to attack the delinquent, Souga Kugizaki, wounding if not killing her friend. When she hears that there'll be a concert that Pop Step is a part of, she has a monstrous electric eel, formerly a regular young man who Kuin kidnapped and experimented on, to cause a blackout, intending to infect everyone at the concert with Trigger. When cornered by Knuckle Duster, Kuin attempts to detonate several of her explosive filled bees, knowing that the recoil she'll suffer will kill Tamao.

[up] Sorry I don't know the work, was there even an EP for them? Might lean cut and re-evaluate if not unless I'm missing something.

[up] Did a search and this is what I found. Seems to be in the cleanup days of the thread. Can't find an EP

All I'm getting from the writeup is 3 Kills (i presume the "poison the doctor" is fatal) and some attempted murders, that even baseline for that genre of TV?

Actually ACW, sorry, buuuuuuuuut...

Who is Carson Riggs? What does he do?

Riggs is the police chief, but in reality he's aligned with Troman Deckard even before Xanafix's creation. We're introduced to him when his son Brady, the school bully, comes home from school after a food fight, where Carson expresses his pride in his son for being "strong". With this, Carson finally feels like he's earned the right to see Carson's most prized possession - a picture of him murdering a pregnant woman during the Vietnam War, something that makes Brady sick to his stomach.

Later on, as Connor and the kids start unraveling the mystery behind Xanafix, Carson "arrests" them all, but in reality he takes them to Deckard so they can be killed, all while he basically forces his son to go along with all of it. Luckily, the kids manage to escape, and Brady flees him while he wonders why Brady doesn't see the world like he does. However, as the situation fully gets out of control and the Xanafix monsters start attacking like wildfire, Carson appears once more as Connor, his friends, and Brady try to get to Deckhard to kill him.

It's revealed that Carson not only knows about Deckard's plan and is 100% on board with it, but he also took Xanafix himself, believing that this would make him stronger and he can finally have his ideal world - where the strong like him rule over the weak for him to do whatever he wants. This makes the police squadron with him realizing what they're dealing with, but Carson brutally massacres the whole lot of them before they can do anything and then moves on to the kids. He comes close to killing them, but Brady distracts him by revealing that he's gay - with this, Carson immediately declares that he'll kill Brady last, but before he can make good on that promise, the kids actually manage to put him down.

Any mitigating factors? Freudian Excuse?

HA HA HA—No. The very first thing we learn about him is that his most treasured memory is murdering a pregnant civilian in the war, so he was already a monster even before Xanafix, and any care for his son only comes down to the fact that he thinks his son is as "strong" as he is - once that's no longer the case (and especially once Brady says he's gay), Carson's ready to kill him just like anyone else.

Is he heinous enough?

Classic Big Bad/The Dragon combo we got here. On top of being 100% on board with Deckard's plan to spread Xanafix across the world and risk all of humanity just so he can have his Social Darwinist world, Carson has also done things like commit war crimes like killing a pregnant woman, massacres his police squadron in horrifically sadistic ways, and then tries to personally murder a bunch of kids including his own son. Yeah, he's fine here too.

Final verdict?

Another easy keep.

[tup] Riggs

Randolphs crimes seem to be this judging by the writeup

  • Seduces the doctors wife then kills her when she serves her purpose
  • Poisons the doctor
  • Attempts to kill the heroes
  • Shoots an old man who was being rude to him
  • Slaps a girl

Is this even baseline in general? He seems to be a guy who's a part of a major villainous organisation.

Yes to Riggs.

Cut Randolph for now but I may look into him again. The original Man from UNCLE had some mass murderers/attempted mass murderers in its original run, many of which seem to outclass Randolph on paper. I've been lowkey meaning to give the series a look after I did Uncle Rudi.
