Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

  • King Tiger & Motorhead: Giu Xian is an occultist dedicated to bringing about the end of humanity. Slaughtering a crowd of people to obtain the Abattoir Key, Xian tries to use it to summon a group of demons to feast on a cruise ship's restaurant, only stopped by King Tiger and the Motor. When this fails, Xian instead sets his sights on a nearby Mardi Gras parade with thousands of people in attendance, intending to massacre them all to open the gate for demons to enter our world and slowly feast on all of humanity.

Basically, we have four major recuring villains: Mister Ming (nasty but has mitigating factors), Xhatan (who's already listed), Miss Ylang-Ylang (Basically, the "catwoman" of the franchise who has standards and a complex relationship with Bob) and Roman Orgonetz.

Of course, there might be other one-off C Ms from the 238 books and counting.

Yes to headmistress and Klim.

Btw does Prince Zelung's book counterpart keep?

I know the others in the western animation section correspond to their book counterparts.

Prince Zelgung is a Canon Foreigner. The book that the episode is loosely inspired from has no real villain (it's mostly a Random Events Plot).

Mister Ming aka the Yellow Shadow, dated trope aside, is a terrific villain. He seeks world domination by any other means and is rightfully feared by everyone he comes across. He claims to want to destroy western colonialism and return to a world in harmony with nature. In-universe, Bob and other characters wonder if it's not a flimsy excuse for his greed and cruelty. We never gets a definitive answer (AFAIK) but he doesn't keep either way. He genuily loves his niece Tania Orloff (who secretly works against him with Bob) and has some level of honor: in one occasion, he repays Bob - who saved his life in his first appearance- by letting him leave hislair.

I would love to suggest him as MB because he's charismatic and also successfully lures heroes in traps morethan once but I think he crosses into "too much of a dick" with some of his schemes (like causing a hunger crisis in Egypt or putting Explosive Leash on minions). Maybe his animated iteration (less heinous thanks to Adaptation Distillation) could keep if people want to check him out.

One last thing: Bob Morane was rebooted twice in comic books.

The first one, Bob Morane Resurection, a modernized take on the franchise that creator Henri Vernes hated, was unfortunately canceled after two volumes and no one counts.

The second one was launched in 2021 with "Les 100 Démons de L'Ombre Jaune" (The 100 Demons of the Yellow Shadow) which is closer to the main continuity. Mister Ming is already established as really heinous and tries to start an apocalypse by releasing an army of ancient aliens on the world. However, I feel like proposing him right now would be too preemptive as there's only one volume so far.

Okay remember when I said Klim was my final candidate, well apologies because after looking over Metro Exodus again, there may be one more candidate worth discussing, The Baron.

Who Is He? What Has He Done?

The Baron is the Arc Villain of the Caspian Sea chapter in Exodus who serves as the leader of the Munai-bailer an army of raiders that rules over the dried out Caspian Sea (now a desert) where under the Baron’s orders have enslaved Caspian Sea region's populace where The Baron would subject them to years of horrific abuse and enslavement having them work themselves to death, with corpses of countless slaves scattered throughout the desert.

Aware that the slaves would rebel against his tyrannical rule if he continued to rule over them by force, The Baron come up with a false religion called “Holy Flame” where he would brainwash the Caspian people that they would get killed should they try to rebel against them brainwashing these people into staying slaves with some even getting brainwash into becoming The Baron’s disposable attack dogs he’ll use against his enemies resulting in their deaths much to The Baron’s indifference.

The Baron would also show the same level of abuse towards his soldiers constantly abusing them and spouting death threads to force should they displease them even following through with his death threats resulting in his subordinate, Saul, turning against them where Saul works with Caspian native Giul into overthrowing The Baron, where The Baron would send not just his soldiers but also Giul’s own enslaved people to kill her.

When Artyom and the Spartan Order arrives in the Caspian Sea, The Baron would send his men to kill them, eventually seeing his soldiers to kill Artyom and his crew including the child, Nastya that was accompanying them, before planning to lure Artyom, Giul, and Damir to his hideout planning for his men to kill.

When Artyom, Giul, and Damir arrive at The Baron’s hideout they see half-naked women (heavily implied to be women native to the Caspian region who the Baron enslaved) throughout his hideout forced to strip in front of The Baron and his men, where they get abused, beaten up, and even raped by them, before encountering the Baron where the Baron sends his men to kill them as well as the Aurora crew. Luckily the three fend of The Baron and his soldiers before Anna shoot The Baron freeing the Capsian people from The Baron’s tyrannical rule.

Freudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities?

The only thing known about The Baron is that he and his crew took over the Caspian region and enslaved everyone there, that is it. While The Baron claims to be civilizing and giving meaning to the "primitive" tribal, the only thing he really cares about is controlling anyone he wants whether it be the slave population so that they’ll do everything for him and even brainwashing them so that they won’t rebel against his rule and uses fear tactic to coerce his soldiers into serving them by threatening to kill them if they don’t follow his orders. In all this guy has no excuse becoming a sadistic and bigoted tyrant where he looks down on Caspian people as lesser beings that he can do whatever he wants to them, while showing absolutely no remorse in committing all these atrocities and cares for no one but himself.

Heinousness

I was initially skeptical about proposing this guy given the setting of Metro, but after thinking it over I think The Baron is uniquely heinous just enough to be considered ruling the dried Caspian Seas as a horrific tyrant killing whomever he wants with corpses littered throughout the region, enslaving an entire race of innocent subjecting them horrific working and living condition with heavy emphasis on The Baron's horrific system of slavery (with the strong implication that the women are made to be sex slaves for him which is unique), while brainwashing them into accepting their state as slave where The Baron would use them as canon fodder, is a Bad Boss that threatens death to his soldiers constantly, and would later have his soldiers raid a train and kill everyone there including the child Nastya.

Final Verdict

I’ll leave it to you guys, and with that I believe that I've discuss the last candidate of the Metro series, at least for the games(I hope)

Possible quote from Natla? I think it may be lacking that "oomph" but feedback would be appreciated!

Lara Croft: Shut it down!
Jacqueline Natla: Lara! Unexpected, but I'm glad you're here. You should be allowed to see the fruits of your labor.
Lara Croft: That's the Midgard Serpent?
Jacqueline Natla: Of course not. Jormungandr is the network of the tectonic ridges that encircles the earth on the ocean floor. And we stand now on its weakest point, where the ancient supercontinent Pangaea first broke in two. When this relic unleashes its fury below, the very seems of the planet will burst. The Midgard Serpent will rise up and spew poison into the air, and all the world will be consumed by fire and ash. Ragnarok! The seventh age is upon us!

Okay, been meaning to do this for a while...this is from my friend Jackie's (therealjackieboy!) screenplay which made semi-finals at a contest he's submitted it to. It's called Xanafix and it's an 80s-horror themed script about a miracle drug that gives more than it promises...

What has Troman Deckard done?

Corrupt Corporate Executive of Deckard Industries, Deckard markets the eponymous Xanafix to everyone, even kids. He claims it cures stress and anxiety; in reality the drug is dangerous and untested, and Deckard is using his initial buyers as guinea pigs to see if the drug has any nasty effects.

Spoiler alert: it does. Xanafix actually transforms people into monstrous, mutated abominations. And when he discovers this Deckard is horrifed...

...for five seconds. Deckard decides he can control and even make a profit on these abominations, and hop-skips over the Moral Event Horizon by giving his annoying seven-year-old son some Xanafix. This is the first of several experiments and deaths related to the drug; Deckard ultimately plans to let these abominations destroy the entire town before he takes the business global, selling Xanafix to oblivious millions.

Deckard captures Connor, the son of one of his board members, Herb; he mutates the former, gloats about this to Herb, then subjects Herb to it as well ("Like father, like son. Disgusting abominations to the end.") Deckard even uses the mutated Herb to massacre his board staff, but Herb's Heroic Willpower overtakes him and he sends Deckard plunging to a horde of those monsters, who rip him apart.

Any mitigating factors?

No. Deckard is the villain from The Stuff but worse. He's taken aback by the effects of the drug for about a few seconds before he gleefully abandons that and every other remote redeeming quality for the sake of greed.

His Psycho for Hire, Captain Riggs, likely counts as well, but Deckard is unquestionable. He's planning on transforming the entire planet into an unending corporate nightmare where the plague of Xanafix spreads far and wide, a scenario which his goons rightfully warn him might kill all life on Earth.

Conclusion?

Keeper.

Yeah, the "what have they done" section for this post is probably too long.

What is the Work?
Amphibia The Calamity Gods is an Amphibia fanfic by Steve_from_Minecraft depicting an alternate ending scenario where the trio kept their Calamity Powers and are able to go back and forth to Amphibia with a permanent portal. However, Darcy resurfaces with a vengeance three years later and it's up to Anne, Sasha and a very reluctant Marcy to stop them.

Who Are They and What Have They Done?
Darcy (formerly known as the Core) is a Mechanical Abomination of "Amphibia's greatest minds" dedicated to eradicating worlds and plundering them for their resources. Believing all other lifeforms are inferior, Darcy will stop at nothing on their goal to wipe out all life on Earth and do the same to other worlds.

All of their heinous actions from the show still apply, the only difference is that they survived the destruction of the moon thanks to a Body Backup Drive. There's also mention that at some point during season 3b Darcy personally slaughtered newts in a battlefield, laughing maniacally as blood splattered everywhere.

Anyway, after their defeat the Core spends three years rebuilding their Frobot army and making themself a new body that resembles their old "Darcy" form because they loved torturing Marcy so much. They set off to steal the Calamity Box, and then the three gems which had been removed. Stealing the box is relatively easy, as they take all the amphibians guarding it by surprise, killing several of them in the process. Afterwards, Darcy forcibly and fatally extracts information from a newt prisoner's brain using a sharp needle to discover the location of the first two gems. While stealing these Gems, they kill some more soldiers and also cruelly taunt how Marcy's too depressed to even try and fight them alongside Anne and Sasha.

Darcy then travels to Earth and kidnaps scientists who work with the third gem, but kills them all once it becomes clear the scientists don't know where the gem was taken for safekeeping. They almost lethally extract the information from Anne's parents but Anne, Sasha, and a very reluctant Marcy arrive and defeat them. Darcy is captured and taken to a high-security facility, ranting that the "inferior beings" of Earth will all burn. Under interrogation, Darcy reveals their Evil Plan is to inject all three calamity gems with dark energy which will turn the Calamity Box into a Doomsday Device that will release a shockwave that'll wipe out all life on Earth.

Darcy then manipulates Marcy, who for the past three years had been extremely depressed and borderline suicidal, into freeing them. They do this by feigning remorse for torturing her in the past and claim that everyone on Earth will hate her once they found out she's responsible for bringing the box to Amphibia in the first place, so she should just live in the Core's fantasy world instead. Darcy promises to spare Earth after they let Marcy join them, but the second they're freed they smugly reveal they had no intention of fulfilling either promise. Darcy goes on a rampage throughout the government facility, and Hop Pop pulls a Heroic Sacrifice to get everyone else to safety. After extracting Hop Pop's knowledge, they steal the final gem and prepare for Earth's extinction.

Darcy and their Frobots murder the entire population of a UK city so they can use the location to build a secure fortress. Once the fortress is built and the forcefield around it is secure, Darcy injects the energy, and cackles as they wait for it to get fully charged (it takes a while). The combined forces of Earth and Amphibia arrive to fight Darcy who gladly fights the "inferiors" and the "traitor" amphibians. They try to guilt-trip Marcy into believing everyone will die because of her, but Marcy (who moved past her trauma thanks to the Guardian) just tells them to shut it.

As the trio all try to reach the music box, Darcy taunts Anne about Hop Pop's murder which momentarily distracts her long enough for Darcy to slice her arm off, which just spurs everyone into fighting harder. Eventually the Calamity Trio successfully destroy the box and the gems, thus preventing Earth's destruction, after which Darcy completely loses it and starts destroying everything in sight with a massive. And when the trio finally defeat Darcy, they spend their last moments of life pathetically begging Marcy for a second chance, which she ignores. Fittingly, Marcy is the one who lands the final blow, destroying the helmet containing Darcy's consciousness.

Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
None. The hive mind issue that prevented canon Darcy/Core from being a CM doesn't apply here, since the fic only depicts Darcy by themself. We don't see any of their minds independently within the Core like we did with Aldrich on the original show. There's one point in the fic where Darcy addresses Andrias as "son", but they most likely only said that to cause Andrias discomfort, and Andrias just responds with "I don't even think that's my father I'm speaking to".

Do They Meet the Heinous Standard
Slaughtered several cities, planned to raze Earth and other planets and did the same to countless others in the past, sadistically tortures innocent people, and takes joy in pushing Marcy past the Despair Event Horizon and actively hopes she'll commit suicide.

Final Verdict?
Yes.

Currently this story has a sequel with an Original Character antagonist who's shaping up to be a CM. I'll make a post for him if I think he qualifies by the end.
