Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Here’s the next and last potential keeps from DCI Banks.

Who are they?

Maureen and Jason Mc Cready, from the Series 4 episode “What Will Survive”. On the surface, Maureen and Jason seem like a regular Mother-Son duo who run a farm and various other businesses in the local area. However, the two are actually a pair of horrific slavers who prey on immigrants that come to the UK.

What have they done?

Finding immigrants overstaying their visas and providing them with work in their businesses, Jason and Maureen would then kidnap them and lock them up on their farm to use as slave labour. They are then made to work in horrendous, insanitary conditions, with beatings and starvation being the norm and the barn they are kept in looking like something from a death camp. They have at least 20 slaves on their farm who are used in this way, with the implication there have been far more and this is only the most recent batch. At least one slave dies due to malnourishment and mistreatment, but it's suggested there are more buried elsewhere that DCI Banks and his team don't find.

When a woman called Katrin came to the farm with her autistic friend Robbie looking for her sister who ended up as one of their slaves, Jason gave chase. However Katrin was accidentally knocked over by Robbie during the pursuit and hit her head. Seeing the perfect opportunity to get away with murder if the body was ever uncovered, Jason convinced Robbie that he was in fact responsible for the death and let him go free purely so he could frame him, and, after consulting Maureen, took the still alive Katrin to a distant car park and horrifically buried her alive.

Arrested when DCI Banks and his team investigated Katrin’s disappearance and received a tip off phone call from her sister (who had escaped the farm but was apprehended by Jason before being able to get to them), Maureen blamed everything on Jason and Jason attempted to frame Robbie for Katrin’s murder. They find evidence tying Jason to Katrin's murder and he’s sent down, but Maureen is able to escape all murder charges and walks free.

Redeeming Qualities or Freudian Excuse?

None for either. The only scene they share together shows Maureen criticizing Jason for his sloppy disposal of Katrin’s body and that’s it. Maureen sells out her son with no hesitation at all when cornered. There’s a scene just before the credits that shows her sitting in her cell and crying, but due to the fact that she displays no empathy or care for anyone except herself the whole time, it’s a fairly safe bet that it’s just tears of self pity at the fact her profit margins will now be taking a tumble. She also acts as the appropriate adult for her nephew in one scene, but she only seems to be there to make sure he doesn't say anything incriminating and otherwise couldn't care less for him.

Jason likewise only seems to “care” for his mother when it comes to his own survival. He acts angry when he realizes she abandoned him but other than that he mostly just seems annoyed with her for bossing him around. Pass to both.

Heinous Standard?

With 20+ slaves, Maureen and Jason have the highest victim count on the show and also have a uniquely horrible niche not done anywhere else. It’s made clear through the condition we see their captives in that being captured by them is nothing less than a Fate Worse than Death and the single murder they do commit is one of the worst on the whole show. Added to that the various illegal activities they get up to AND attempting to frame an autisitic man for a crime they commited (resulting in his death) and you have an easy pass.

Conclusion?

Keep.

@ACW It's because they only see Jason, as he's the one whose responsible for the day to day "running" of the business while she's the one who makes all the actual decisions. Because she wasn't present and they didn't see her, they can't prove she knew about it.

I guess my only concern is for a cruel psychopath, suddenly sniffling at lost profits seems odd. Can I get some context there? Is it immediately following her son’s arrest.

Nah he's already been arrested several scenes ago at that point. Basically, in their only scene together, she kicks up a huge fuss about how she built the business and she's the only one who made it work with no help from either Jason or her deceased husband (who she holds in nothing but contempt), showing that the slave labour idea was originally hers. It just seems to be a loss of pride relating to that, as it will now be shut down. I definetly can't see it as empathy at all, as she displays literally none in any other scene and framed Jason with zero hesitation whatsoever.

What is the Work

The Caveman's Valentine is a 1994 crime novel centering around Romulus Ledbetter, a mentally ill homeless man suffering from paranoid delusions who lives inside of a cave in Inwood Park. After another homeless man, Scotty Gates, is dumped nearby his cave, Romulus suspects famous photographer David Leppenraub is behind the murder and attempts to insert himself into New York high society to find the truth.

Who is Joey Peasley? What has he done?

Joey Peasley is an ambitious wannabe artist hailing from North Carolina. Having moved to New York City to serve as an assistant for famous photographer and artist David Leppenraub. When Leppenraub somewhat brusquely declined Joey's request to collaborate with him on an art piece, a resentful Joey wanted revenge.

After Leppenraub was forced to undergo hospitalization after being diagnosed HIV-positive, Joey took advantage of Leppenraub and his sister Moira’s absence to force Leppenraub's model Scotty Gates to perform for his twisted art videos, forcing Scotty to perform bestiality and cover himself in blood, among other things. When Scotty had enough and called Joey out for his depravity, an enraged Joey trapped Scotty inside of a walk-in freezer and tortured him for days on end, all while recording it for yet another art piece.

To cover it up, Joey injected Scotty with a vial of HIV-infected blood and left him to freeze to death. He then edited the video with vocal clips from a play Leppenraub had performed in to make it appear as though Leppenraub had created the snuff film, intending to blackmail Leppenraub with it. Joey then began impersonating Scotty and claiming that Leppenraub had tortured and raped him. Convincing gay homeless man Matthew Donofrio of his story all the while convincing Matthew that he loved him, Joey then dumped the real Scotty's corpse in Inwood Park, intending for the clinically paranoid Romulus Ledbetter to discover the body and begin spreading rumors about Leppenraub.

Joey promptly blackmailed Leppenraub into paying him $100,000 to keep quiet, but after Leppenraub contacted him to inform him that Romulus had caused a scene while accusing Leppenraub of being a murderer, Joey traveled back to NYC and recruited drug dealer Robert "Shaker" Jackson to help him kill Romulus. After brutally torturing and nearly killing Matthew to learn his location, the two discovered Romulus had traveled down to North Carolina. Joey quickly headed back to North Carolina, and further convinced Romulus his story was true.

Joey decides to blackmail Leppenraub further for five million dollars, but after hearing that Romulus was claiming to have a copy of the tape, Joey decided to kill him. After faking his own kidnapping in front of his mother just for the sake of terrorizing her, Joey and Shaker held Romulus at gunpoint, threatening to torture and kill his daughter Lulu in front of him. Romulus discretely calls Lulu, who arrives wielding a gun. After she rescues Romulus and wounds Shaker in a gunfight, Joey shoots him dead to prevent him from talking before fleeing the scene. He then arranged to meet with Leppenraub onboard a subway train where he would be given his money, only for Joey to be identified as Scotty by Matthew and arrested by Romulus's frenemy Lieutenant Detective John Cork.

Does he have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Absolutely not. Joey is an entitled sociopath who refuses to tolerate any sort of criticism and lashes out violently when he receives any. Any care he shows anyone is entirely false. He terrorizes his mother by faking his own kidnapping in front of her, he murders his partner Shaker, and he's not only fine with torturing and potentially killing his supposed boyfriend Matthew but outright hurls homophobic slurs at him during the climax and makes it clear that he means absolutely nothing to him.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Shaker is a vile sadist, but he's nothing more than a flunkey for Joey and never gets up to as much crimes as he does. The only other competition is Shaker's fellow drug dealer Eel and their supplier, but Eel has genuine standards and never does anything heinous onscreen while the supplier is only briefly mentioned once.

Final Verdict?

Yes.
