Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[tup] Buck, Moses Brown, and honestly, yes to Kwon. From the description it sounds like the story is a fictional segment of a reality show, with the actors on the show playing characters, and I myself have gotten up weirder - remember the guy from the kids' finding book?

  • House of Secrets volume 2, by Steve Seagle: Pfaultz is the cruel ands obese prosecutorial counsel for the Juris, a court of law staffed by lost souls. A con artist posing as a plague inspector in Medieval Germany in life, Pfaultz used his supposed authority to rape and murder peasants to his heart's content, but after his accomplice turned him in due to being unable to take it anymore, he was abandoned to die of the disease himself. As a ghost of the Juris he recommends the harshest possible punishments to even the most minor offenses - including recommending a little girl be damned to eternity in Hell - and attempts to corrupt troubled runaway Rain Harper into offering up her friends to his nonexistent mercies, which would eventually force her to trade places with him in never-ending purgatory.

Video works.

Ducky's quote works too.

[up] Hammy, no disrespect, but that joke is kinda in poor taste, considering that Buck Calahan forces women into prostitution. Lighty himself discouraged jokes (edit for clarification: when it comes to lowlife pimps, rapists, and the like specifically).

I would know, having made similar mistakes before.

[down] I meant in this situation. Didn't you just call G out for making a similar joke?

I'm fine with jokes, just not so much when it comes to sexual assault and issues like genocide, etc.

Side note: I just got a new streaming service for my phone, and was planning on watching one of the films on that service tonight, but I tripped on my way home and mildly injured my hand. So I think my movies (which I intend on evaluating here) will have to wait until I feel a bit better.

[down] I understand, Hammy. Like I said, I have made poor choices myself when it came to making jokes about candidates.

My apologies, I was trying to make a Kill Bill reference.

Though considering that film was produced by a prolific sexual predator and directed by a guy who looked the other way, maybe it wasn't exactly in the best taste there either.

Very sorry.

By the way, Hammy, I think Amoral Attorney may work as a pothole for Pfaultz's name, if you are okay with that.

[down] If not, I still think it would be worth potholing in an other part of the writeup, again, assuming you are okay with that.

Yeah, I had considered that, but his main narrative role is as the main antagonist so I ultimately decided on Big Bad.

[up]Speaking of Pfaultz, I actually remember that book vaguely from childhood. I just remember it being dreary and unnerving, the art reminded me of Dave Mc Kean. It being an In Name Only stand alone just ups the creepy factor, like a fever dream you have once and lingers in the back of your mind.

I finished watching the new Stranger Things episodes that were recently released on Netflix and I think Brenner may need to be rediscussed. Regardless of whether he’s still a keeper by the time the series is over or not, I think I’ve found a character from this new season who DEFINITELY has a shot at keeping.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn’t intend to spoil anything. That’s why I didn’t go into further detail.

[up] I think someone else reserved that on the Complete Monster Discussion Dates, Laurel. May wanna strike that out.

Speaking of reservations, someone else can handle SVU, since I haven't gotten to it yet.

Also, my wrist is still sore.

Also, from an interestingly quiet drama film...

What's the work?

The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane is a film difficult to categorize. Not quite horror, thriller or drama, adapted from a novel by writer Laird Koenig. Rynn Jacobs lives in the village of Wells Harbor, Maine, in a big, fancy house by the ocean. Rynn is odd; intelligent beyond her years. She goes into town by herself, doesn't go to school, her father is a reclusive poet always busy when people come to call. Rynn handles household bills and tends to speak rudely to grownups like the nosy landlady Cora Hallet, and our candidate: Cora's perverse son Frank.

Who is Frank Hallet?

The son of Cora Hallet, Frank is one of the wealthiest men in town, with such corruption shielding him from any retribution. Which is unfortunate, because Frank is a rather vicious pedophile who breaks into Rynn's house on Halloween and finding Rynn alone, makes clear and unwelcome sexual advances. Cora makes it pretty clear Rynn should not be speaking to Frank on her own and letting him by is bad for her health.

Not only that, the townspeople are quite uncomfortable with Frank, with one policeman, Officer Miglioritti, growing close to Rynn and giving her a lift back to her house when Frank makes another move on her. Cora Hallet is accidentally killed breaking into Rynn's cellar and Rynn manages to hide the body and replace her car, meeting Miglioritti's nephew Mario, who becomes her love interest as Mario's something of an outcast. Frank doesn't stop, brutally murdering her pet hamster. Mario holds a blade on Frank and intimidates him out...where he reveals Frank has also assaulted numerous other girls and only got married to his current wife after Officer Miglioritti was stonewalled after saving a girl Frank dragged into the bushes, with a vain attempt to prove him "normal" via a quick marriage.

It turns out Rynn's father was terminally ill and killed himself in the ocean to be washed out, after making arrangements for Rynn to live by herself as long as she makes it three years to 16 where she can claim full independence. Her abusive mother came calling and Rynn slipped something her dad gave her in mom's tea. Which was actually cyanide. She's been holding on to her mother's body and manages to bury her and Cora with Mario's help who falls sick soon after.

Frank, with Rynn isolated, breaks in and investigates the cellar, finding his mother's hairpin there. Not caring whatsoever about his mother's disappearance, he tries to blackmail Rynn into being his sex slave, talking about their "long winter nights" upcoming. Rynn serves him tea after, and slips the cyanide into her own cup, the suspicious Frank making her switch with him. The final scene of the movie is Frank dying, choking, as Rynn watches him icily and without emotion.

Mitigating issus?

I think we have more than enough on screen. Frank is a cruel pedophile confirmed to have other victims, only stopped from raping another girl by Miglioritti once. He spends almost every scene he's in tormenting or trying to assault Rynn, murders her hamster (they used an actual hamster for the scene-albeit a frozen, dead one they got from a research lab. The real hamster was adopted by the set designer) an spends the final scene trying to force her to become his sex slave.

Also, I need to note he has no care for his wife and stepkids. He barely mentions them and it's noted that he was forcibly married off so his mother could project a facade of respectability. While Cora seems to care for him (albeit aware of his predilections), Frank could not care less when he realizes she's dead and only uses it as leverage to try to rape a 13 year old. No other villain here to compare. Most you can say is Rynn and Mario sleep together willingly (he's probably 1-2 years older than her...there was one shot that was done with Jodie Foster's 21 year old sister Connie as a body double when Rynn undresses, but I digress)

Conclusion?

Frank keeps.
