Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

[up][up][up][up][up]It's sort of in-between the two: the soul (a.k.a. all that's good in a person and really most of the person's personality) becomes a separate entity and is chained up by living snake-chains in the Kingdom of Dreams, leaving only a small and very unpleasant and unhappy Personality Remnant in the body.

The personality wipe isn't as complete as, say, after a Dementor's Kiss, as the memory, the sapience and some traces of the former self are there.

However, we don't find out what the effects would have been long-term, and there is a possibility that eventually the victims would have reached Empty Shell status: Wennie, who has only just given away her soul, still struggles with herself and feels remorse for her treatment of others, while Aurint, who has been like that for a much longer time, is almost completely horrible except for a trace of his love for Smirinka (and even that is twisted into I Have You Now, My Pretty).

But, since it's a children's book after all, the soul-snatching (even after the Moral Event Horizon deed sealing the deal, like with Wennie or the Little Mouse) can be and is reversed before the long-term consequences can be seen.

After some discussion, we have decided that this candidate needs to go, just shows how ludicrous the heinous standards of the game is…

What’s the Work?

Criminal case is an Object finding style game where the player solves crimes across various location, this season is set in an american City Named Pacific Bay.

Who Is he and why does he not qualify?

Albert Tesla is the candidate, he serves as the game’s overall Big Bad who tries to destroy Pacific Bay due to the crime rate rising high.

There are two reasons why he needs to be cut.

1 - There is people thinking that Albert Tesla’s Goal is to destroy the world, but there is actually no indication that Albert Tesla tried to destroy the world, In fact, when he mentions his plans to the player and the protagonist, he states that he is going to destroy ‘pacific bay’ instead of the entire world, not just once but countless times, meaning his goal of ‘world destruction’ is complete exaggeration.

2 - Because of this, he fails the heinous standards of the game, he directly caused 2 murder and that is it and tried to raze Pacific bay, but compared to other villains, that just makes him generic, even compared to villains who are not heinous in the game’s standards:

Omar Bahir Attempted to spark a war in the Sahara.

Ayush Patil had destroyed India and massacred indian population via Plague with intention of wiping out majority of human population on earth and reign as a supreme god,

Denise Daniels attempted to wipe out humanity and rule the world as a supreme god as the leader of the Neohumans, conducting mass human experiments in process.

Demon Queen tried to wipe out humanity and destroyed multiple universes in the past.

Even Lucrezia Stein, who lacks all the resources managed to kill thousands in her hospital and conducted mass torture.

Albert Tesla on the other hand? Attempting to blow up a city, that’s all he tries, he did no other crimes such as human experimentation and his other crimes such as murder and aiding jailbreak is literally generic in CC Standards.

Final Verdict?

Cut.

It is comprised of ten districts, so roughly thousands. Don't recall there being anyone in the game saying he wanted to destroy the world; just assimilate as many people unto his digital world or kill the rest.

I know nothing about Criminal Case so I'll hang back for now but what's this concern over people incorrectly thinking he wants to destroy the world? That's not anywhere in his entry.

Adding to that I might take a whack at redoing some of the other entries, Ayush's claiming he's "the most depraved suspect that the Bureau had encountered", on top of reading rather awkwardly, doesn't seem like a good claim to posit when he's one of many monsters in the series.

I'm gonna guess Denise is the highest up for resources just looking at the writeups so I'm not sure comparing to her is of concern. I remember we cut Omar for... something about the heinous standard but as I recall he was part of some far-reaching organization, even if he did try to spark a war. Where's Albert on the totem pole? I'd guess he's something around Ayush who indeed seems far worse but I'd like some more here since I feel like the whole monster section could use a rework in the first place.

I've got another one:

What's the work?

Chain Letter is a two-book horror story by Christopher Pike. It concerns a group of seven teens who accidentally kill a man while driving and cover it up. The group is then sent a series of chain letters ordering them to perform certain tasks, or they will be hurt. The candidate is the overarching villain of the story, "The Caretaker."

Who is the Caretaker and what do they do?

"The Caretaker" is a demonic spirit worshipped by a Satanic cult. One of the cultists, Jane, tried to convince her lover James to be her victim in a ritual murder. When James tried to escape, Jane killed him by stabbing a needle through his skull, before killing herself with a knife. James's body is dumped in the road, and when a gang of teens- Fran, Kipp, Brenda, Neil, Joan, Tony, and Alison- run over the body one night, they believe they've killed him and bury him in secret.

Taking possession of Jane's body, the Caretaker wishes to recruit more victims, so she targets the gang. She infects Neil with a tumor, using this to weaken him enough to put him under her influence. She forces Neil to send a chain letter to the group, threatening to reveal what happened that night, ordering each teen to perform a certain task within five days, or they will be hurt. There are three rounds of dares, with the first round being mainly harmless mischief (Fran is told to ruin the school's mascot, Alison is told to flub her lines in the school play), but those who try to defy the Caretaker are hurt in accidents.

The second round of dares becomes much nastier, with Fran and Kipp being abducted when they refuse to do them, and the Caretaker sending the others a threatening letter hinting they might be dead. Neil is then told to burn down the school. He tries to fight the Caretaker's influence, so she stages his death in a house fire. The rest of the group is able to find him and rescue Fran and Kipp, but Neil dies after fighting off his possession, as the tumor has spread to his brain.

With Neil dead, the group thinks they're safe, but three months later, the Caretaker targets them again, putting them through the third and final round of dares. This time, they are given far more sinister demands, and are told they now have three days to fulfill their tasks, or they will die. Fran and Kipp are both given demands the Caretaker knows they would never meet (Fran is told to drown her puppy, Kipp is told to burn his sister's arm) and are immediately killed when they refuse, with Fran being decapitated in a car accident and Kipp being burned alive.

As a result of these events, Alison's relationship with her boyfriend Tony (who was driving the car that night) cools off. The Caretaker goes after Tony, posing as a nurse named Sasha. She sabotages his relationship with Alison, making Tony think she's cheating on him, and gets Tony to fall for her. When Tony's letter comes, he is told to blow Alison's brains out. He is now fully under the Caretaker's control, so he finds Alison and subdues her.

The Caretaker explains to Alison that the tasks she had them perform were meant to indoctrinate them into the cult, saying that she had to get them through the third round herself because Neil could only take them so far. She gloats that even if she is stopped, more Caretakers will come after her, and watches as Tony tries to kill Alison. Instead, Alison places the gun to her own head and pulls the trigger herself. This saves Tony from damnation since he didn't complete his task, while the gun was loaded with blanks, and Alison recovers. A spirit, implied to be that of Neil, then appears, and the Caretaker leaves Jane's body to attack him, taking the form of a snake, but the spirit crushes her.

Heinousness?

She easily passes this, causing plenty of death and suffering, killing several of the teens in extremely cruel ways, and takes pleasure in the lives she ruins. It's also indicated that while she wanted to corrupt the group, she also wanted to kill some of them purely out of enjoyment, as it's said that Fran was given an impossible task on purpose and the Caretaker just wanted an excuse to kill her.

Redeeming qualities?

Nope. She's a sadistic demon who enjoys making people suffer, and shows no remorse for any of it.

Mitigating factors?

We aren't told too much about her origin or nature, but what we see makes it clear that she's well aware that she's doing evil and clearly enjoys it, so I don't think moral agency is an issue.

Conclusion?

I think she counts.

Speaking of Denise I need to update her entry because her writeup is massing a major crime of hers.

I will chime in a bit since I know quite a lot about this series. I actually can see a case to cut Tesla city destroyers are not particularly uncommon in the Criminal Case series and Tesla's resource levels while not super high is not unreasonable either. I am not totally sure though as his crimes are still quite awful I have been thinking of bringing him up but I was never quite sure.

I would say around Ayush; but no. No where is it stated in-game that Tesla wanted to destroy the world; he wants to destroy the Pacific Bay region which would obviously give him a large enough body count and not just the "releasing five killers" aspect.

But I wouldn't advocate removing the character on a false claim.

  • Monsters Among Humanity: Derek Hunter is an egotistical and xenophobic hunter who believes all non-humans are weak. When Derek and his fellow hunters found some lamias living in the wild gathering together, he shot one of them, provoking all the other lamias and pressuring the other hunters into helping him massacre the lamias until most were dead, even killing one of his own hunters simply for refusing to kill a lamia. When Nesusi was fleeing with her egg, Derek chased her and shot her in the back, causing her to die in front of Joshua Scaleton. Derek then tried to convince the other villagers to help him wipe out every lamia left in the forest, but was arrested. 20 years later, Derek escaped with Heather's help upon seeing Zephixa perform on stage, wanting to kill Zephixa out of spite. After Zephixa gets away, Derek threatens her that he would blow up part of their village with everyone in it if she didn't hand herself in, but it was made clear that he planned to blow it up anyway.

[up]x9 You are underestimating the NOTORIOUS Standards of Criminal Case, it is the same game where people who tried to destroy entire Continents, Attempted to start a LITERAL WAR in a continent is considered GENERIC. Albert Tesla destroying Pacific bay, ONE CITY is in the standards of the game the most generic thing you can imagine for Criminal Case.

Tentative write-up for Caretaker:

  • Chain Letter: The Caretaker is a demonic entity who targets a group of teens who believe they had killed a man. She implants Neil with a lethal tumor that manipulates his mind, forcing him to send the group a chain letter telling them to perform tasks that will eventually damn their souls. When Neil fights his possession upon being told to burn down his school, the Caretaker leaves him to die. Targeting the survivors a few months later, the Caretaker gives Fran and Kipp outrageous demands that will never be met, then brutally kills them, with Fran being decapitated and Kipp being lit on fire. Posing as a nurse named Sasha, the Caretaker sabotages Alison's relationship with Tony, who she puts under mind control. When Alison discovers the truth, the Caretaker gleefully orders Tony to kill her, gloating that even if Alison stops her, another Caretaker will take her place.

I found an example that seemed to be unapproved on YMMV.The Remarried Empress. It was added by Digi X Bot in April last year, with no edit reason linking to this thread, and seems to fail the heinous standard.

  • Complete Monster: Sovieshu was already disliked by readers for cheating on Navier while acting annoyed when she is with other men, but readers were furious when after telling Navier that he will shoot down any birds from Heinly that come to the castle, he has a cooked bird served as her dinner decorated with the feathers from McKenna's bird form (who was shot down but thankfully avoided death), knowing she'll react in horror. Then he had the gall to act like Navier's grief upsets him when he's the one that hurt her in the first place.
