During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk
to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "
to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

to R.E.H Dyer, the First Floor man, the Brock Rumlow quote, Darth Momin, the Grandmaster of the Brujeria, the Spider Queen, Derek Olson, Aerys II, and Crassus. Keep Jekyll/Hyde.
to Gene Gogolak.
RIP William Hurt.

I'm all good for you rewriting it.

Unfortunately, the only problem with the Dyer video in the EP is that it's too long (7:15), unless someone can shorten its length.

Do you think this video
of Cipher from The Fate of the Furious is good?
Also, if it gets approved, could somebody else submit it, please, because I don't know how to download a video from You Tube?
If we want a Walder trim...
- Lord Walder Frey, after a few episodes of pretension as nothing but a doddering old pervert, proves his true evil when he conceives of the Red Wedding. For the sake of getting back at Lord Robb Stark for not honoring his wedding vow, Frey has Robb, his pregnant wife, his mother, hundreds of his bannermen, and even his wolves massacred in one of the most devastating acts of treachery Westeros ever sees. When his wife is taken hostage, Walder throws her away and remarks "I'll find another." Spending the rest of his life rubbing his hands over the power he backstabbed his way into, Lord Walder violates every single value even the cutthroat world of Westeros upholds.
I prefer the word flow on this. And it may be a quibble, but since I rewrote him initially, I'd prefer we use this (unless people vocally feel otherwise, of course).

Yes to Aerys and Crassus.
I have a sure fire one from the new Guild Wars 2 expansion End of Dragons. It's been two weeks since the expansion launched but I'm holding back for a little while until get a bit more ancillary information. This is notable since the duology currently has 7 and another would make 8, so we'd probably be good for a page. Regardless, give me a week or two more for Ankka.
Think you're tough because you made it through Lord of the Rings? Real men survive The Silmarillion. And with potholes (I kept everything else the same):
- Lord Walder Frey, after a few episodes of pretension as nothing but a doddering old pervert, proves his true evil when he conceives of the Red Wedding. For the sake of getting back at Lord Robb Stark for not honoring his wedding vow, Frey has Robb, his pregnant wife, his mother, hundreds of his bannermen, and even Robb's direwolf Grey Wind massacred in one of the most devastating acts of treachery Westeros ever sees. When his wife is taken hostage, Walder throws her away and remarks "I'll find another." Spending the rest of his life rubbing his hands over the power he backstabbed his way into, Lord Walder violates every single value even the cutthroat world of Westeros upholds.
I had to removed the Dirty Old Man pothole, but I think the others work better. Though I'm amenable to chopping From Nobody to Nightmare and re-inserting Dirty Old Man; up to you. I'm holding firm on the others though.

Unsure on King Aerys since he has only five seconds of screen time (half of which is being stabbed). Is that enough presence?
As for the Walder Frey rewrite, there appears to be a mistake; there is only one wolf, not plural.

"I'll show you the Dark Side." CM actors and killsFrom Nobody to Nightmare is probably more important for his monstrosity than the creepy old dude trope... as for Aerys I've given my reasoning on why I feel we're given enough character.
I'd just replace it with "Robb's direwolf" then.

If a monster can be cut due to a throwaway line, they can also be kept because of a throwaway line. Trevor Lanpert keeps because one of his few lines of dialogue ("Just feisty, little one. There, now. That's better." Maybe it was "Just lie still…", but that would still indicate he gets sick pleasure) indicate he is enjoying drowning a teenage girl while recording it.
Aerys is no different.

Sure.
Btw curious. Has Emperor Yotoden from Mashin Sentai Kiramager been brought up?
Dude from what I've heard is an old school Super sentai Big Bad? Aka card carrying villain planet-destroying evil overlord?
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."
