During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.
Specific issues include:
- Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
- A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
- Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
- Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
- Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.
It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk
to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.
Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:
Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.
IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.
When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "
to everyone I missed").
No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.
We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.
What is the Work
Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.
Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?
This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.
Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?
Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.
Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?
Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard
Final Verdict?
Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I was looking at my writeups, and I feel like Mr. Dark should be redone
Original: Mr. Dark is the leader of the Autumn People and owner of Dark's Pandemonium Carnival who feasts on the emotions of those who he bargains with and transforms them into Autumn People themselves. Arriving in Green Town, Illinois, Dark grants the desires of several of the townsfolk, only to have it go wrong and result in their corruption, such as giving Miss Foley her former beauty, only to blind her afterwards. Wanting to know when the storm that will destroy them will approach, he electrically tortures Tom Fury and, when discovered by Will Holloway and Jim Nightshade, has the Dust Witch send out a swarm of spiders in an attempt to kill them. Meeting Will's father, Charles, Dark tries to coerce him by offering him his youth in exchange for the kids and, when Charles refuses, attacks him, has the Dust Witch try and kill him and kidnaps his kids while gloating how he'll die failing to save them. When Charles goes out to save them, Dark tries to break him by making him think Will hates him, and tries to corrupt both kids, offering to make Jim his co-owner in order to feast on his emotions.
Rewrite: Mr. Dark is the leader of the Autumn People and owner of Dark's Pandemonium Carnival who feasts on the emotions of those he bargains with and transforms them into Autumn People. Arriving in Green Town, Illinois, Mr. Dark grants the wishes of several of the townsfolk that causes their corruption. Wanting to know when the storm that will destroy them will approach, Mr. Dark electrically tortures Tom Fury and has the Dust Witch send out a swarm of spiders to kill Will Holloway and Jim Nightshade when they eavesdrop on him. After failing to Coerce Will's father, Charles, Mr. Dark attempts to kill him and kidnaps both kids with plans to corrupt them, gloating how he failed to save them and that Will considers him a failure.
Btw I'm curious. Why was Mossflower moved below Mattimeo in Monster Redwall?
Wasn't the later published after mossflower.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."Uh this series is Anarchonic Order though.
Legend of luke and Lord Brocktree take place decades before Martin the warrior and mossflower. And in turn redwall and matimeo take place decades after those.
He'll Martin the warrior is supposed to happen before Mossflower but the later was published first.
Like it seems weird to do that for that tree when everything else will be random timeline wise.

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."I would like to propose a new X-Files candidate. He's from the The X-Files S03 E11 "Revelations"
Who is he? What has he done?
Simon Gates is a wealthy man and well-respected in the South. He traveled to Jerusalem and came back with a whole new outlook on life. Plotting to bring about Armagedon, Gates attacks and kills anyone who claims to be a stigmatic, including a fraud priest whom he pins up to a wall and sadistically chokes him to death until he starts bleeding. Believing a boy by the name of Kevin Kryder to be the true enigmatic, he stalks him and kills his guardian angel, before killing his mother by causing her car to crash. Finally capturing Kevin, he takes him to a paper thresher, describing to Kevin what will happen to as "The sun will turn into darkness and the moon will turn into blood". When Sculy catches up, Gates uses the boy as a meat shield and proceeds to attempt to shred him alive.
Mitigating Factors
None
Heinous Standard
The X Files does have a high heinous standard but I feel Gates is at least pretty close to that club. Lets see: sadistically kills 11 people who considered themselves stigmiates, kills a child's guardian angel AND his mother, uses him as a meat shield and attempts to shred both the boy AND himself, all to bring about the end of the world. Simon Gates is sadistic and dangerously delusional.
Verdict?
Possible

Are there any other villains in The X-Files who attempt Armageddon or anything of the sort? Gates sounds like a possible keeper but I'd like more info on some of the franchise's other villains.
I write stories and shiz. You can read them here.
Gates. That is a rather odd character, wanting a worse outcome from doing something than what would actually happen. I have seen a few characters disqualified for having the exact opposite problem (not intending something super awful to happen) so I guess it is fitting someone qualifies for the opposite reason.

Yes to Gates... just look at Jonah King thinking sacrificing a baby will bring Satan to Earth.
Simon Jones, Simon Stagg, Simon Cowell, yeah, I can see it.
to Simon Gates.

Check out my current fanfiction project.
Erik, Thomas Wayne, Mateusz, Razz, Rafid, Ted, Teach, Eric, Richard, Loeb, Blodge, Bailiff, Bulbin, Gates.
Keep Doflamingo and Argost.
Cut Rafid.
Meteor, Diavelli.
Hey so I was rewatching the 2nd Divergent movie to look for possible CM images and I ran across a scene that may be mitigating for Eric. In one scene he's searching for the heroes in a barn and some horses start panicking and he drops what he's doing to pet one and try to calm it down. It's pretty brief (which is why I missed it before) but it is worth mentioning for him.

Alright, you know what, I'll give a reluctant yes. Since it seems, at best, he knows about the poisoning and just doesn't care.
Fair point about Goldtooth.
