Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I kinda like the finishing line of Cavil's old write up though. It seems fitting. Could we keep that.

From my Battlestar Galactica recollections, Thorne's a no. Also, Satoshi, this is a minor quibble, but Fisk was a Commander when Phelan had him murdered.

I got the Transformers: War for Cybertron version of Megatron approved a ways back, but I don't think I did as good a job on the write-up as I might have liked. Here's the old one:

  • Megatron, leader of the Decepticons, is the instigator of the first game's titular war. A merciless tyrant, Megatron is bent on the conquest of Cybertron and the destruction of the Autobots, with the resulting war ravaging Cybertron and devastating its population. After taking control of the powerful Dark Energon, Megatron infects Cybertron's core with the substance, further damaging the planet and bringing it under his control. When this corruption is cleared away, the core is forced to shut down, leaving Cybertron on the brink of death. As the Autobots try to leave the dying world, Megatron has their ships shot down, endangering the future of his own species to satisfy his hatred for the Autobots, before sending the monstrous Trypticon after them. In Rise of the Dark Spark, Megatron acquires the Dark Spark and uses it to resurrect dead Autobots as mindless drones who will fight on his side. When offered a truce by Optimus Prime in Fall of Cybertron, Megatron refuses, blaming Optimus for Cybertron's decline, declaring himself the planet's future, and trying to destroy the Autobots' last hope of leaving Cybertron alive. After discovering the damaged Trypticon, Megatron, not caring if Trypticon is still conscious or not, has him forcibly converted into a warship for his own use. As the Autobots flee Cybertron, Megatron stages one last assault on the Ark, doing his best to kill Optimus Prime and doom the Autobots. Ruthless and bloodthirsty beyond measure, Megatron is willing to doom his own homeworld and his entire species to satisfy his lust for power and hatred for his enemies.

I feel like I dragged it out too much. Here's my rewrite, any thoughts?

  • Megatron is the bloodthirsty leader of the Decepticons and the instigator of the first game's devastating titular war, bent on the conquest of Cybertron and destruction of the Autobots. Upon taking control of the powerful Dark Energon, Megatron infects Cybertron's core with it to bring the planet under his control. When the corruption is cleared away, the core is forced to shut down, leaving Cybertron on the brink of death. As the Autobots try to flee their dying world, Megatron has their ships shot down, endangering the survival of his own species, before sending the monstrous Trypticon after them. Later acquiring the Dark Spark, Megatron uses it to resurrect dead Autobots as mindless drones to fight on his side. Rejecting any notion of peace, Megatron goes on to blame Optimus Prime for Cybertron's decline and does everything in his power to prevent the Autobots from escaping with their lives. After recovering the damaged Trypticon, Megatron, not caring if Trypticon is still conscious or not, cannibalizes his body, converting it into a warship, which he uses to attack the Autobots on their last desperate attempt to flee Cybertron. A merciless tyrant driven by hate and a lust for power, Megatron is willing to push his own race to extinction if it means that he wins.

And both that rewrite and Cavil's need to go to the Drafts.

Very happy B-day to Jackie!! Yes to Shinsuke! Thorne unfortunately sounds like a miss, sadly.

Write-ups coming soon, but first, since we're all pretty much in agreement of "CM videos can exist we just have no idea where the OG Cioccolata one went", let me go ahead and get the ball rolling by suggesting one: Cobra Commander annihilating Moscow and then killing one of his own men for trying to talk him out of murdering millions more:

Anyone dig it as a potential video example?

Actually, speaking of that Megatron...

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Transformers: Exodus showed that, in spite of him rebelling against the Fantastic Caste System, Megatron hated Minicons, expressing an idle desire to step on Soundwave's posse. In game one has the option to pet Laserbeak on the head, and though he snaps at Megatron, Megs merely laughs it off.

I have another possible one of Zhan Tiri destroying Corona slowly and painfully. I will need to cut the later parts out though but this is my idea.

I also quite like the other ones.

Who do we have left for Vice now? And has anyone heard from Orangutan?

  • Witcher: The Deathless Mother, or "voleth Meir" is an ancient being that was trapped by the first Witchers. Feeding off despair and misery, the Mother sows devils bargains that lead people to death, ruin and pain while she gluts herself upon it to eventually escape. Bringing about the ambitions of Nilfgaard and also arranging events so the baby son of elven sorceress Francesca Findabair is murdered, the Mother also feeds on the pain when Francesca furiously murders ever newborn in Redania in vengeance. Possessing Ciri, the Mother murders numerous Witchers before fleeing the sphere and taking her place with the monstrous Wild Hunt.
  • Six Rooms: Charles Lester III is a selfish, entitle aristocrat who believes everyone exist to serve him and his whims. Catching his valet trying on his cuff links, Charles murders him and then the housekeeper as a witness. Murdering the gardener after he sees him place the still living Housekeeper in a tomb to suffocate, Charles is then disturbed by the distraught scullery maid Isabelle who is pregnant from his drunken rape of her. Charles proceeds to murder her as well, finally deciding to kill his pregnant wife Rose to complete the cover up.

So...coping with the death of a pet I had for 25 years so...may not be around much for a few days.

But wanted to get this one in, from Magic the Gathering.

Who is Tezzeret?

A Planeswalker, a being capable of passing between planes of existence. Tezzeret was born to humble origins, an abusive lout and a prostitute. As a boy, Tezzeret was left to see his mother die by a runaway carriage and his father cautioned him that the strong took what they would while the weak endured. Tezzeret decided he would be a strong mage. And nobody could ever take anything from him. Tezzeret began to steal ethereium, magic material, and rise in the esteem of several gangs....he abandoned his father without another thought.

Taking his new name and becoming a mage apprentice, Tezzret grew stronger by murdering bandits constantly to take their etherium and rising higher in the mage ranks. His method of dealing with slights? Tezzeret had a habit of murdering the mothers of those who crossed him. At the tender age of 19, Tezzert replaced one arm with pure etherium, gaining the status of Master mage. He later murdered the headmaster to conceal his lowly birth, getting away with murder. In an attempted theft, Tezzeret awoke his Spark and fled where he met eternal dragon Nicol Bolas. He swore allegiance for the sake of power and had multiple agents of Bolas assassinated to install those loyal to him....Bolas eventually learned of his betrayal and, uh, it didn't end well.

Bolas rebuilt Tezzeret and forced his loyalty...as he served Bolas, Tezzeret opened the way for Bolas to invade Ravnica and commence the War of the Spark...all the horrors that beset Ravnica? The mass death, destruction, attempted Spark-Rips of everyone there? Tezzeret's doing...see, Tezzeret was also sick of serving Bolas and when defeated, stated he was glad Bolas would fall...because nobody would stop him.

Since then...Tezzeret has faked his death and is hiding out, infiltrating Ravnica where he plans to build his strength and seize ultimate power for himself at last...

Mitigating issues?

No, not really. Tezzeret is a cruel, callous, selfish mage who was known for disproportionate cruelty since his youth. Growing from nothing, Tezzeret learned early on: the strong take everything they want and he did NOT intend to be the one it was taken from. No care for either of his parents, jut a lesson...

In terms of heinousness...he facilitates the War of the Spark. He has to serve Bolas, but it's a completely willing facilitation of intensely monstrous deeds, nearly effecting the annihilation of Ravnica. Now, while his rebellions against Bolas kinda fail, Bolas forces Tezeret's loyalty....but Tezzeret is aware of it and very unhappy. He's joyful over Bolas's final downfall, gleeful his hated master is gone and let him ascend. At the end of the day, Tezzeret has caused the deaths of countless innocents for nothing more than personal gain and is one of the few who can go above the high, high standard of Magic, along with possibly the Planeswalker Tibalt and Olivia, the Queen of Innistrad.

Conclusion?

Keep.

I wish I watched the original Battlestar Galactica (1978), because there looks to be potential candidates from there, but alas.

Anyway, I want to hop on the monster video bandwagon, so here's one for good old Tarkin.

Yep to Tezzeret; I trust there's no affection for Dead Mom?

And my condolences, Lighty. It's never easy.
