Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Yes to the Transformers and order

  • Bloodrunners: Chesterfield straddles the line between vampire and mobster. Running a Speakeasy where he uses blood as a commodity. Opening the film by torturing a victim, Chester removes his fingers and adds them to trophy case of others before murdering him. Having a group of crooked cops slaughtered when they attempt to blackmail him, Chester shows he is eager to kill anyone for his own gratification as well. Luring in multitudes of young women, Chester has them taken to his basement and slowly drained of blood as a new way forward for vampires where he can distribute blood and rule the underworld.

P.S. Ordeaux, with the 4 current keepers, Lighty's 2 new keepers, and Scraggle's 2 keepers, looks like we have enough for a League of Legends page now (especially since more may be coming).

Introduction and Work

In light of One Piece's Enel's non-canon retelling incarnation evidently on the chopping block soon, I have decided to create a new (looking back on it, people have brought him up before) EP with the intent of possibly voting his canon incarnation into the main page. Although his Skypeia Special entry has no real missteps in describing his atrocities in canon, I would create a new writeup if it comes to pass on the slight errors and omitted details of his evil; for instance, the monster description claims Enel wanted to destroy Skypeia For the Evulz. The actual reason he wanted to do that was that he felt the sky belonged to him (god) and its residents were unfit to live there...which is arguably worse.

Who is Enel again?

Enel is the self-proclaimed god of Skypeia, having violently usurped rulership from the benevolent Gan Fall. For reference on "self-proclaimed,": "God" is merely a title given to the governing leader of Skypeia, but it has no genuine religious or divine overtones, something Gan Fall lectures Enel on when he claims he is a literal god.

Little is known of Enel's childhood life, but passing dialogue indicates he had no love for his homeland Birka. After finding and eating the Goro Goro no Mi, Enel developed his god complex and committed genocide on his own people, annihilating Birka before departing to Skypeia with some powerful followers.

As ruler of Skypeia, Enel started his tenure by forcibly taking over the Upper Yard as his living quarters, a sacred place to the native Shandia. Anyone who sets near besides Enel's cultists is killed on the spot.

After studying the texts of the Upper Yard, Enel interpreted the moon as where he ("god") originally came from and enacted a plan to return with an airship constructed from the invaluable gold from Shandora's ruins. Enslaving at least 600 of Gan Fall's followers, he forced them to mine the gold necessary to make his ship. They complied believing Enel would not often extend his wrath towards the innocents of Skypeia if they did so.

Enel plots to commit genocide against Skypeia before he departs for the moon, using a design of his airship with his Devil Fruit powers to completely obliterate it from existence. His reason for this is he believes its inhabitants are unfit to live in the skies that belong to him ("god").

Until his ship and plan is ready, Enel spends his time sadistically lording over the hapless inhabitants of Skypeia. Using his strong Observation Haki (i.e, clairvoyant abilities) in conjunction with his Goro Goro no Mi powers, Enel could sense EVERYTHING around Skypeia, including thoughts and whispers 24/7. If anyone so much as thought of something that displeased Enel, he would send forth a bolt of lightning to kill the offender. This led Skypeians to live in permanent terror and paranoia, developing insane laws for any perceived crime (which includes sneezing).

Sociopathy

Enel is perhaps one of One Piece's most premiere examples of a true sociopath. He has no empathy or care for anyone or anything besides his own life, claiming he only keeps his close followers around because they worship him. He has no qualms of killing any of them for fun, and during the Survival Game he sets up to determine who will join him to the moon, he mocks and ridicules their deaths. When Gan Fall's some 600+ enslaved followers attacked Enel when he announced his plan for Skypeia, he murdered them all at once. Recounting the story to Gan Fall in person, he bursts out laughing and slapping his knee at the memory.

When Luffy confronts Enel about his attitude, he openly says he can take whatever he wants, do whatever he wants, and that everything including all life belongs to him because he is "god."

Redeeming Trait?

After Luffy foils his plot to destroy Skypeia, but not his plan to travel to the moon, Enel becomes an Accidental Hero. He stumbles on the site of a brawl between some space pirates and an automata named Spacey. The pirates coming to finish the job on Spacey, attempt to attack Enel, but he vaporizes them. Spacey and his friends attempt to express gratitude, but Enel brutally shocks them and leaves to further venture the moon. Upon discovering the pirates were excavating a hidden mechanical city under the moon, Enel is incensed that's built on his perceived home. He launches an attack intending to annihilate the city but all he does is turn on the lights and reactivate the dormant automata. Spacey and his companions, undeterred by Enel's earlier attack, arrive and inform him of the history of the city and automata.

Although initially irritated by the automata following him around, Enel realized he has unwittingly established a new empire full of subservient, fight-capable followers and relents looking pleased at his growing army.

Uhm, given everything about Enel and the full narration of this story, can you infer he remotely cares for his new followers or just appreciates the blind loyalty? For comparison, Rob Lucci who is otherwise a complete monster even now was shown to genuinely love his fellow CP 9 workers and showed real gratitude for them saving his life in his cover story. He's seen bowling and having fun with them after, even, to affirm the genuineness.

Heinousness

One count of total genocide, infrequent mass murder by the hundreds, horrible big brother-like lordship, enslavement, complete sociopathy and admitted lack of remorse for any of his deeds, extreme sadism, and a second attempted genocide. Enel does all this with no freudian excuse or reasoning besides the fact he is superior to all life.

TBH, I'm really not sure on Enel. The Fairy Vearth arc has him defending the robots on the moon. He becomes their leader after, but there was seemingly no real reason to him doing this, save for goodwill at first.

Barbatos is looking good, so let’s move on to the bigot.

Who is Saint Batman?

An alternative version of Jean-Paul Valley that lacks his genuine mental illness and heroic qualities, he is a bigoted Knight Templar out to secure his own power while claiming to fight for Gods. Attacking Gotham, Valley killed Batman and took his identity as the caped crusader, later stealing his protocols against the Justice League to kill them all, but not before mocking Superman, who is Batman’s lover, about his betrayal.

Turning the Earth into a nightmarish, genocidal dictatorship where he has POC and LGBT people exterminated. Eventually meeting Barbatos, Valley joins his cause to impose his will against all of the Multiverse, even convincing Barbatos to devour his universe to strengthen himself. When he is summoned to Gotham, Saint Batman wasted no time getting a gang of White Suprematist together, leading a large amount of Gotham’s POC population into a warehouse and burning them all alive to begin his genocidal crusade on Earth 0.

Excuses or mitigating factors?

NONE. This version of Valley makes his mainstream counterpart at his worst look like Superman. He cares for no one except his bigoted agenda.

Heinousness?

A genocidal dictator who convinced Barbatos to devour his universe of his own free will. I say he keeps.

Final Thoughts?

Definitely the second I’m most sure about.

Sure. Now can we cool it with the efforptosts for like a while? There's like 5 in the last few pages. And that also applies to any quotes or images. The "what about this and this and this" is overwhelming

Going to say [tdown] to Enel. None of his actions really stand out all that much when compared to other vile characters in One Piece (see Doflamingo and the World Government, for example), and his bit with the automatons feels mitigating to me.

I'd dispute Enel flunking the standard with his plan to destroy Skypiea but if he seems to be bothering to protect and get along with his robot followers that I can't overlook. With it all out I'm also officially gonna say cut his film version.

Island-scale destruction isn't really that unique in One Piece. The World Government does it with Buster Calls, Doflamingo planned to kill everyone with his Birdcage, Linlin's crew burns down places that don't meet her demands, and Orochi plans to blow up Wano using the weapon stored in Onigashima. That's why Enel's plan to destroy Skypeia doesn't really seem super unique to me.

Alright now for my 2nd Clear and Present Danger candidate Felix Cortez.

Who is Felix Cortez and what does he do?

Felix is the Intelligence officer for drug lord Ernesto Escobedo, he's referred to as the Invisible Man by the DEA in Colombia since they can't figure out his identity. He's first seen confronting Escobedo over the American family he murdered for stealing from him, revealing that the man was good friends with the president and saying that if Escobedo keeps acting like a temperamental idiot then he'll quit and Escobedo will probably die without his help. Later Felix is seen romancing Moira Wolfson, the secretary to FBI Agent Dan Murray. When Murray is sent to Colombia to help Ryan, Felix uses info he got from Moira to organize an ambush of the motorcade they're in which results in 10 deaths and 8 injuries according to a news report. Shortly before the ambush, Moira calls Felix at an inconvenient time, causing him to travel to America and murder her to, "Tie up lose ends."

Felix made it look like Escobedo set up the ambush, causing him to organize a meeting of all of the drug lords to figure out what to do about the ambush and the people sabotaging the cartels' operations (the American soldiers working for Cutter, Ritter, and Clark). Escobedo and Felix are delayed and avoid being blown up in a supposed car bombing that was actually a special missile attack by the Americans. Felix investigates the explosion and figures out that the Americans are behind the attacks.

Felix contacts Cutter and Ritter and gives them a deal, he'll kill Escobedo and take over the Colombian drug trade and reduce the amount of drugs going into the US and allow the US to regularly arrest some of his men so it looks like America is winning the War on Drugs, in exchange, they will let Felix kill the soldiers attacking the cartel. The two agree and Felix kills all but 3 of the soldiers, capturing 2 while the last one escapes. Later, Ryan shows up at Escobedo’s base and shows him a recording of Felix's meeting with Cutter, Escobedo then confronts Felix and prepares to kill him for his betrayal. However Felix's henchman busts in and kills Escobedo and a big fight breaks out that ends with Ryan saving the captured soldiers and Felix being shot.

Heinousness?

He’s responsible for about 20 deaths with around 12 more attempted murders, plus his end goal would involve him killing Escobedo and regularly selling out his own henchmen to the US. Unlike Ritter, he only kills one civilian and the rest are either soldiers or American government agents but it’s still pretty heinous. As far as resources go, he has more people working for him than the 12 man team carrying out the Operation but the Americans also had some outside forces helping them (specifically the ship used to fire the “car bomb” missile). I’m not entirely sure he stacks up but he is still pretty heinous.

Mitigating Factors?

None really, his outrage at Escobedo’s actions is pure Pragmatic Villainy and unlike the other drug lords, he isn’t seen with any family or friends

Conclusion?

I’m leaving this one to you guys.

Another for Phillip Noyce as Director as well. Along with Ritter, that makes five.
