Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

So it's been a few pages since he was brought up but something has been bugging me about the Episode of Skypeia iteration of Enel counting. The main reason given for why he diverges from canon is that he seemingly falls to his death instead of flying to the moon. Well, in both the anime and manga the exact same thing happens.

Enel is shown falling unconscious beneath the clouds to his apparent death only to later be shown on his ship headed to the moon. Episode of Skypeia doesn't show him on his ship but it doesn't really draw much attention to his fall either. Unless someone is looking for it, it's incredibly easy to miss that he falls in the first place in the special. All you really see is a dot falling after the bell he was slammed into and the scene actually showing him and the Ark falling and people reacting to it was cut. Since there is no emphasis on him falling I don't really think it's a case of Death by Adaptation but simply them cutting a scene that was not necessary for a new watcher to get the gist of the arc.I personally don't care whether that version of Enel keeps or not but I just thought that argument didn't hold up.

Going to be honest we cut a film version of Crocodile for the same reason, I'd vouch for a cut there.

Now that does change things for me Tommy. Thanks for catching that, I recall it was stated he died in no uncertain terms in the EP and the poster emphatically stated it when it was later questioned but now this is feeling much more like a compressed adaptation… aka the exact reason we cut Crocodile.

Edit: [nja]

All that being said though, I’d like more on his relationship with the moon robots. I’d be inclined to add the original if there isn’t anything genuine there but first I’d like that verified since Oda frequently does have long lasting villains learn to care about their crew or crew equivalent as a part of character development.

Cut Enel if it's that straight an adaptation.

Though I don't mind us rechecking his original counterpart.

Something totally unrelated to the current discussion, but Kishi Nobusuke from The New Order Last Days Of Europe is no longer on the wait and see for EP list as of Toolbox Theory update. This is because the new writing team had a different perception of Kishi vs. the older writing team and felt that while Kishi is indeed a extremely vile figure, he wasn't as insane of a maniac willing to kill his own population as the original writing team portrayed him as. Its' likely that he'd be a colossal Hate Sink if he ever gets content, but would not hit the qualifications for CM in the TNO universe

His role in the story has been replaced by Mutō Akira, whos' a massive piece of work and arguably a runner-up for the title of Greater-Scope Villain for the Chinese theater of World War 2 IRL and in TNO as well as a major war criminal in the pacific theater as he played a role in starting the war with China, perpetuating the Nanjing massacre. I'd say he's very likely to qualify for the trope when Japan gets 1970s-1980s content so he's worth keeping an eye on.

Chop Enel.

Next League of Legends champion! He was brought up veeeery briefly in the past where back then we decided he didn't have the requisite agency for this trope...lemme disprove that.

What has Thresh, the Chain Warden, done?

The sadistic, cunning wraith known as Thresh was once simply known as Brother Grael, the custodian of arcane secrets and artifacts too dangerous and unpredictable for the rest of Runeterra to find out about. Living in the Blessed Isles—the former state of the hellish realm of islands now known as the Shadow Isles—Thresh began Slowly Slipping Into Evil as a result of his years of solitude within the crypts he kept, his resentment for the others in his order, and a preexisting spark of cruelty which would have its chacne to rage when Viego, the Ruined King, came to the Blessed Isles.

Thresh saw the subsequent carnage that Viego plunged the Isles into as beautiful opportunity. Thresh deliberately manipulated Viego into massacring the entirety of Thresh's old monastic order, then convinced Viego to use the Waters of Life to bring back Viego's deceased beloved Isolde. The result of that was the Ruination, a horrific magical event that engulfed the Blessed Isles in shadow, transforming every single living entity on that island into a tortured, undead wraith. While everybody else on the island screamed for reprieve, Thresh laughed, embracing his new form and the unholy powers that came with it.

Now an utterly sadistic wraith who was still trapped in the Shadow Isles, Thresh began reaping the souls of countless, countless innocents. Every soul Thresh claims is kept within his lantern and plunged into a pure state of And I Must Scream, tortured eternally by Thresh while he always taunts them with the freedom perpetually out of their reach. Thresh tailors his torture by the individual; the video game Ruined King shows that he holds dozens of souls as playthings within his fortress, subjected to constant Mind Rape, some tortured for so long that they genuinely believe they belong to Thresh and that they deserve it. One exemplary example is a scholar named Omulan who Thresh has kept trapped for years in a replica of his monastery, solely so Thresh could torture Omulan with all the people he failed to save and all the memories of his old life.

Among Thresh's many victims was Senna, the wife of fellow Champion Lucian, a fact that Thresh never got tired of taunting Lucian about through their constant encounters until Lucian finally managed to shatter Thresh's hold on Senna. Thresh's ultimate goal is to create a second Ruination across all of Runeterra. The Ruined King saga (particularly the aforementioned Ruined King video game). Working in conjunction with Gangplank, Thresh resurrected Viego, then manipulated Viego into turning his wrath upon all Runeterra, hoping to destroy all life on the planet, and then enslave their souls into perpetual torment.

Thresh's attempt at a second Ruination is foiled, but with Viego's defeat comes Thresh's liberation from the Shadow Isles and the return of his physical body. Thresh now sets about on the rest of Runeterra, killing anyone he comes across, massacring inns full of people to enslave their souls and perpetually watching Senna/Lucian for when they will next fight again...

Any mitigating factors?

Old lore was extremely murky on whether or not Thresh was evil out of his own cognizance or if he was driven insane by the artifacts he defended. The more lore we get on Thresh, the more it becomes apparent Thresh was always evil. He just never acted on his potential. His biography makes it incredibly clear Thresh has always had a lack of empathy and a knack for cruelty that revolted his fellow mages ("Over the decades and centuries that followed, his supernatural appearance slowly changed to match the malice and cruelty that had always festered in his heart") and his journal entries in Ruined King, written from his POV, further ingrain that even before his transformation he was an arrogant sociopath who didn't even feel anything over witnessing the gruesome death of his fellow monks.

While it's left somewhat ambiguous if the "nameless tome" Thresh found actually had any effect on his mind—Thresh denies it, though he may have simply been too arrogant to realize it was "whisper[ing] his darkest thoughts aloud", the process is clear. Thresh was not an innocent man turned involuntarily to evil. In the manner of Gharnef, Thresh was an already-evil man turned even worse when the Ruination allowed him to fully embrace his sadistic potential. In the modern day there's no pretense to anything but Thresh being fully and gleefully aware of what a monster he is.

"Night at the Inn" does show him being fairly affable to an abused waiter named Bort, but not in any redeeming way—Thresh takes delight in corrupting the otherwise Nice Guy into a sadistic spirit that he then proceeds to put under his thrall. Bort may have it slightly better than everyone else Thresh runs into, but this isn't a Pet the Dog moment. It's Thresh having fun corrupting an innocent into evil.

As for the heinous standard, that's a non-issue. Thresh has solid claim to being one of, maybe the most evil League of Legends champion ever. He's responsible for the everlasting torture of hundreds, maybe thousands of souls, he has some of the nastiest Kick the Dog moments ever portrayed in the lore, and his endgame is to enslave the souls of everyone in Runeterra into perpetual torment.

Conclusion?

I'm saying easy keeper.
