Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Complete Monster Cleanup Thread

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Well that's a definite [tup] to The Beadle and God rest Stephen Sondheim indeed. I'd heard the news before I came here and saw it. Another for both Tim Burton and CM Team Ups as well.

Just goes to show, really hard to hate Todd when he has to deal with horrible people like Turpin and The Beadle. Heck, his tossing down The Beatle's hat after him is a nice touch.

I’m gonna go against the grain and say “no” to Bamford. I’m sorry, but he just doesn’t really do enough on his own to stand out from Turpin (or Todd himself for that matter). He’s a slimy prick but I personally just don’t see him as a keeper.

Just popping in to reserve discussion on the live-action Lion King sequel/prequel, which will apparently expand on Mufasa's past. Who knows, maybe Scar will get some extra crimes or (hopefully not) a tragic backstory.

I got another Shanna the She-Devil candidate for us too, from issue #2 of the 1972 run:

What has El Montana done?

El Montana is a grotesquely obese slaver and drug dealer, a "man-mountain" who makes a living regularly kidnapping droves of innocents from the Fulani tribe. The comic opens with El Montana's slavers rounding up dozens of young and healthy men, women and children to be sold as slaves, brutalizing anyone who gets in their way. One poor schmuck is even gunned down.

El Montana himself is a greedy Fat Bastard who beats his own men and throws any problem slaves to languish and starve in the "punishment pits." He's seeking to sell a huge load of heroin and ruin countless more lives—partly for the sake of profit, but also to buy even more slaves for his empire, laughing that with the heroin money he'll be able to buy a thousand slaves. Shanna manages to dismantle his operation, and tosses El Montana to the clutches of his own ill-treated slaves who take him apart.

Any mitigating factors?

No. Evil human trafficker without a hint of redeeming qualities—even in the run that notably introduced Mandrill to audiences (one of Marvel's creepiest villains—he's a mutant with the head of a mandrill who likes to use his pheromones to force women to, er, "love" him—before anyone asks, he doesn't count because he loves Nekra like a sister) El Montana himself is standing out supreme.

Conclusion?

Keeper.

And yes

  • Sweeney todd: The Beadle Bamford is the lecherous, corrupt right hand of Judge Turpin. A sadistic pervert , Bamford is the man who had Sweeney Todd arrested and helped lure his wife Lucy to be drugged and raped by the Judge where he is implied to regularly take advantage of the insane Lucy on the streets later. Bamford also ensures innocents are famed to be sent to the gallows by Turpin, including a little boy bamford is not even aware is guilty of anything.
  • Spine of Night: Lord Pyrantin is the son of a would-be emperor, a would-be tyrant who has the tribe of Tzod slaughtered in her great swamp. Seeking to expand his own domain, Pyrantin wishes to eliminate all the "uncivilized" peoples there, threatening to torture and possibly rape Tzod when she resists. In return for Tzod scarring his face, Pyrantin has her swamp set alight with intent to kill any of the peoples there.
  • Texas Jack: Henry Saul, better known as "Ironsmoke" is hired by the corrupt businessman Passendale to clear out settlers from Wyoming. Ironsmoke does this by massacring numerous settlements to the last individual, including personally killing a baby to present its arm as a trophy to Passendale, horrifying even him. Ironsmoke then kills all of Passendale's fellow businessmen and shoots his arm to make it believable. Later capturing Texas Jack to create his own legend, Ironsmoke threatens to have his lover Amy gang raped should Jack refuse a duel.
  • Moonshine: Stannis is a mob enforcer in service of Joe Masseria. When Masseria is outraged at the fall of Capone and seeking to make Elliot Ness look incompetent, Stannis is hired. Stannis becomes a brutal serial killer, killing the homeless and prostitutes to create a scandal for the law enforcement who cannot stop it, killing numerous innocent people and stating his only interest is being paid.

  • Prince of Darkness: Satan, though terrifyingly eldritch, is still recognizably evil as the eponymous Prince Of Darkness. Introduced as a Leaking Can of Evil, Satan possesses dozens of people, from the homeless to college students, and compels them into homicide and insanity for the purpose of freeing him from his seal. Satan uses some of the only moments it has for dialogue for mock the heroes on their impending doom at the hands of its apocalyptic father, the Anti-God, gloating that "you will not be saved!"

  • Moon Knight: Mother White is a South Caribbean drug lord who rules through the heroin trade. A multiple murderer who keeps a cop named Lynora as her drug-addicted slave, Mother White also moonlights as a cult leader with an especially vile victim choice; ghetto children, whom she kidnaps in the dead of night so she and her followers may kill and eat them.

  • Shanna the She-Devil: Queen Omell, supposedly the noble ruler of Palandor deposed by her evil brother Sann, is anything but what she claims. Omell is actually a tyrant who allows her citizens to languish and die under horrible, widespread starvation, with any who dare to so much as beg for food struck down by her sadistic guards. Upon manipulating Shanna into returning her to the throne, Omell tries to kill both Shanna and her own brother Sann by feeding them to a monstrous beast, only pausing first to kick one of her own followers to the beast for fun.

  • 40 Coffins: Dracula turns out to be the enigmatic stowaway aboard the Demeter. Dracula picks the crew as sustenance for his long journey from Transylvania to England, picking them off one by one and driving them all insane. After he's slain all but one crew member, Dracula spends the duration of the remaining voyage tormenting the captain by staring at him in the silent dark, before coming onto England's shores to claim countless more victims, beginning with the first man who finds the captain's diary.

  • Ravage 2099: Dethstryk—real name Graeme Striker, the last President of the United States—is by 2099 the wicked tyrant of the island of Hellrock. A Card-Carrying Villain who "only finds humor and solace in unimaginable perversity," Dethstryk has thousands of people exiled from the mainland and dumped aboard Hellrock to endure agonizing transformation; the few who survive become tortured travesties of themselves known as Mutroids, whose lease on life is only as long as Dethstryk's Hair-Trigger Temper. Throughout the story, Dethstryk threatens to rape Ravage's love interest Tiana and turn her over to the pleasure of his Mutroids; regularly murders his own minions, often dozens at a time, for the pettiest of reasons; and mind-rapes a contestant to his title named Soul-Dark with the sheer power of his evil, until Soul-Dark is nothing but a vegetable. Dethstryk's ultimate plan is to reduce all of Earth into a "Hellworld," killing off all humanity except for a small pocket to forever serve him as agonized Mutroids, and he slays even his own Dragon and former First Lady, Seeress, for rebelling against his insane evil.
