Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

I unfortunately do think I lean a Nay on Kaspar, all things considered.

Give Lighty and I a bit on Hannibal...I think there's discussion to be had, yet.

In the meantime, a chunk of my write-ups:

  • Manhunter: Dr. Hannibal Lecktor lacks most of his iterations' standards or genuine politeness. A Serial Killer who brutally slew nine college girls and left two survivors permanently hospitalized, Lecktor attacked and nearly murdered FBI profiler Will Graham for exposing his crimes. Confined to his cell but no less horrid in how he psychologically torments Will and fondly recalls how the first cop who entered Lecktor's basement was scarred for life by the horrors inside, Lecktor reacts to Will questioning him for information on the new killer "the Tooth Fairy" by finding Will's home address and leaking it to the Tooth Fairy, urging the murderer to kill Will's wife and child. His crimes committed out of nothing but sadism and, later, spite towards Will, Lecktor held a belief that his murders made himself like God, and celebrated every death he caused.

  • William Shakespeare's Star Wars:
    • Palpatine, aka Darth Sidious, is a diabolical Sith mastermind who revels in his own evil and finds no greater joy than crushing others. Orchestrating the invasion of Naboo and near-massacre of swathes of its populace to secure his place as Supreme Chancellor, Palpatine then plays the Republic and Separatists against each other to kickstart the Clone Wars, leading to a years-long, galaxy-wide bloody conflict that engulfs countless worlds in war. For his masterstroke, Palpatine corrupts Anakin Skywalker into becoming his apprentice Darth Vader, uses Order 66 to wipe out almost all Jedi down to the younglings, and institutes the oppressive Galactic Empire regime to become the dictatorial Emperor of the galaxy. Constructing the Death Star in the hopes of using it to destroy entire worlds against his rule, Palpatine later sets a trap to wipe out the entire Rebellion and turn Luke Skywalker into his pawn all at once, hoping to have Luke kill his own father before promoting to torture Luke to death when he refuses. Returning one last time, Palpatine twists Ben Solo into Kylo Ren, unleashes the First Order onto the galaxy to terrorize and destroy many worlds, then attempts to once more rise to power not only through use of his "Final Order", an army of planet-killing Star Destroyers, but also by forcibly transferring his essence into his own granddaughter Rey, having murdered the girl's parents to bring about the possibility.
    • Jabba the Hutt is a bloated, slug-like crime lord who Han Solo considers the most depraved being he ever faced. A gangster who terrorizes Tatooine, Jabba enjoys torturing innocents and indebting petty crooks to him to force them into servitude, and regularly feeds people alive to his pet Rancor or Sarlacc, including his own men. Having Han frozen alive in Carbonite and hanging him on the wall as a trophy, Jabba captures Han's attempted rescuers and turns Leia into his latest scantily-clad slave meant to be permanently chained to him, before trying to throw Han and the rest of his friends and allies to the Sarlacc to be digested slowly and painfully for years.

  • Marvel Mystery Comics:
    • Issue 52's "Tyrants Must Die": Colonel Von Kluk is a sexist pig of a Nazi who is trying to steal away massive food supplies from France, uncaring if the countryfolk suffer and starve. When the Human Torch interferes in his business, Von Kluk threatens to kill every single female in the entirety of France, and though the Torch thwarts this scheme, Von Kluk resorts to kidnapping hundreds of young children and threatening them. After torturing a French rebellion ally, Von Kluk uses the hostage children to force the Torch into surrendering himself, promising to spare the kids, but as soon as the Torch complies, Von Kluk orders the children be slaughtered, anyway.

And the last few for this week:

  • Manhunter: Dr. Hannibal Lecktor lacks most of his incarnations' standards or genuine politeness.
  • Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat: Ethan Jefferson is a psychotic vampire supremacist. Viewing Mardulak and his repentant vampires as "domesticated abominations", Jefferson hatches a plan to wipe out the entire town using special wooden bullets and an army of crooks he's converted into vampires, who he doesn't care if they live or die. In the process, he condones Shane's desire to rape and claim his old flame as his own. After Jefferson's attack kills much of the town and results in the deaths of many of his men, Jefferson takes one of Mardulak's friends hostage to force them to stand down, only to try and execute them all anyway. Jefferson embodies everything Mardulak seeks to get away from, and enjoys every second of it.
  • Deadpool Vol. 3 issues #14-19 & Deadpool vs. Thanos (primarily): Francis Fanny, aka Ajax and later Abyss Man, is the supervillain behind Wade Wilson's transformation into Deadpool. As "twisted as a corkscrew", Francis begins as the muscle responsible for handling "rejects" of the Weapon X program, assisting Dr. Emrys Killebrew in performing grotesque experiments and lobotomies on the unfortunate subjects, including Wade himself. Francis grows to quickly despise Wade's defiance and forces him to watch as he lobotomizes Wade's only friend in the facility, Worm, as an exceptionally cruel means of cajoling Wade into performing a Mercy Kill on Worm. Taking the name Ajax after his first defeat, Francis carves a path of torture and slaughter across those who had escaped the Weapon X project, finishing off with the now-reformed Dr. Killebrew. Fueled by nothing but a psychotic hatred of the one man he couldn't break, Francis is one of the few foes of the Merc with a Mouth played with complete pathos.
  • Marvel Mystery Comics Vol. 1 (Examples featuring Namor the Sub-Mariner can be found below):
    • Issue #34's "The Curse of Professor Torture": The insidious Professor Torture makes good on his chosen sobriquet by kidnapping the sons of wealthy couples and putting them through excruciating torture, taunting their parents with pictures and ransom notes. More often than not the Professor simply tortures his victims to death, ripping their arms off, mutilating them, boiling them in oil and—as he attempts to do to the Angel—subjecting them to the Iron Maiden.
After torturing a French rebellion ally, Von Kluk uses the hostage children to force the Torch into surrendering himself, promising to spare the kids, but as soon as the Torch complies, Von Kluk orders the children be slaughtered anyway.
  • Uncanny Tales Vol. 1 issue #21's "The Torturer": Don Pedro is a Spanish conquistador who earns his title "the Torturer" by inflicting agony after agony upon the native Aztec population. He whips them; stretches them out on the rack; drowns them; and threatens to rip them apart, sometimes to extents his victims die. When approached by a village whose population greets him with food and gifts, Don Pedro tortures his way through them and buries their harmless old chief alive.
  • X-Force Vol. 4 : Yevgeny-Malevitch Volga is a cackling Russian sadist and a merchant of death responsible for, among other episodes of carnage, the Alexandria Incident, where 3,000 innocent people were vaporized by one of Volga's powered-up mutants as a "proof of concept" to potential buyers. Volga specializes in young mutants he tortures into "peopleweapons", including an unfortunate mutant who could look into alternate realities whose family Volga casually murdered, and a pregnant woman named Marrow whose unborn baby was harvested for "weapons-grade stem cells" by Volga, a fact which he delights in nearly breaking her mind with.

Seems Kaspar's a bust. Can't say I'm too surprised there.

  • Alex Rider: Skeleton Key: Conrad is a freelance terrorist and General Alexei Sarov's most trusted lackey. A former bomber who blew up his school and later committed terrorist acts across the globe, Conrad began to work for Sarov shortly after he was injured in an accident. After Sarov comes up with a plan to take over Russia by setting off a nuclear bomb and dismantling most of Europe, Conrad wastes no time helping Sarov get the materials he needs, killing anyone who interferes with their plans. Once Sarov kidnaps Alex Rider, Conrad tries to have him killed on numerous occasions, despite Sarov's demands to keep the boy alive. While Sarov wanted to bring Russia to a more stable country with him as its leader, Conrad only helped Sarov for the sake of getting rich, not caring that millions would perish in the process.

This entry can go between Sayle and Rothman.

I have explained my perspective on the archiving conversation via pm to ~Imperial Majesty XO. In short, I have concerns about unsanctioned reproduction, especially in a case where the author is embarrassed enough to take the work down. Additionally, requesting to reproduce said work is outside my comfort zone.

I hope we can all move forward as colleagues after this.

So here's a special series of EPs that I'm looking forward to hear what you guys think.

What Is the Work?

Hey, you heard of this little movie called Dragon Ball Evolution? It’s terrible.

But did you know that the film’s credited writer, Ben Ramsey, had written a different script for the movie? Upon completing the script and selling it to Fox, the studio and director James Wong rewrote it into, well, Dragonball Evolution. Ramsey himself has disowned the final product, claiming that it bared little resemblance to the script he sold to the studio.

Today, we’ll be looking at said script. Called Dragonball Z (weird, considering it’s based on the original Dragon Ball series), this script, a bit closer to the source material, is better than the finished movie… though it still has some of the dumb shit seen in the final product. It’s a dumb fun read that at least has a good sense of humor, tight pacing, and at least tries to be a fun action adventure movie for non-Dragon Ball fans.

Goku is just a regular teenager who learns martial arts and goes to highschool. But there’s also a famous myth, filled with demons, warriors, and mythical martial arts that were tied into an apocalypse that happened 2,000 years ago. But that’s just a myth, so much that it spawned trading cards and a video game.

But said myth, of course, turns out to be true. So Goku, after the death of his friends and his grandpa/master Gohan, sets out on a quest to gather the 7 Dragonballs to save mankind from the threat of Pilaf, a Namek-jin from space. Along the way, Goku meets up with the gun-toting scientist Bulma, the elderly island-dwelling Master Roshi, the thief Yamcha, and Krillin… who only has one page of screentime with zero dialogue.

There are plenty of potential candidates to go through (maybe 4), so I’ll start with the two easiest ones.

Who Is he?

Piccolo is the Demon King of Namek who wishes to dominate the universe with the help of the Dragonballs.

What has he done?

Unable to defeat the Seven Great Masters tasked to protect the Balls, Piccolo summoned the being known as Oozaru to destroy the planet Earth as a distraction, creating an eclipse that resulted in millions of deaths. But Piccolo was soon defeated, never to be seen again.

Until 2,000 years later, with the new eclipse about to commence and bring about the return of Oozaru, Pilaf gathers up the 7 Dragonballs to resurrect Piccolo and doom the Earth. Upon Piccolo’s return at the very end of the movie, he tries to kill Goku, but not before delivering this pretty badass line:

“And now Kakarot, for your betrayal. You will watch your friends die. Then you will watch your world die. You will bear witness to the destruction of EVERYTHING YOU WERE, EVERYTHING YOU ARE AND EVERYTHING YOU WILL BECOME!”

But Goku’s able to wipe him off the face of the Earth by catching his spirit bomb and throwing it back at him with a Kamehameha blast.

Redeeming Qualities?

None. Piccolo, while having less screentime than the final product, is portrayed as a force of evil with a heavy messiah complex, viewing himself as a god as he tries to destroy all of mankind, with the entire universe next for him to conquer.

Heinousness?

His previous battle against Earth is shown early on in an educational video, with the script also detailing how he and Oozaru wiped out humans thousands of years ago. And Piccolo attempts to do that all again, while making sure to rub it in Goku’s face how much of a failure he is. He’s the top level of the heinous standard in this movie.

Conclusion

Keeper.

Alright, next candidate.

Who Is She?

Mai is a Namek-jin, one of Pilaf’s top servants alongside the ninja Shou, and a shapeshifter who proves to be far more sadistic than her partner.

What has she done?

Mai works for Pilaf in his plan to resurrect Piccolo and destroy all of mankind. Invading the Capsule Corp., she kills three guards while she steals the DBE Locator, forming a rivalry with Bulma in the process. With the locator in hand, Mai goes around searching for the Balls. Killing Goku’s grandfather Gohan with the help of Shou, when Mai finds one of the Balls in Paozu village, she sends some ninjas out to silently massacre the villagers to retrieve it, with the priests assigned to protect it all dying in the process.

Mai later stumbles upon a caravan of wandering gypsies, gleefully slaughtering them all, including children, just for their Ball. Mai then takes the form of the little girl Suno, pretending to be a helpless survivor and tagging along with Goku and the gang, asking them various questions about themselves. As they gather the penultimate Dragonball, Mai tries to turn Goku, Bulma, and Yamcha against each other, kidnapping both Bulma and Yamcha to be used as bait to lure Goku to Pilaf’s temple.

After a whole bunch of shit, Mai goes toe to toe with Bulma for one final time in an epic gunfight straight out of Equilibrium. The fight ends with Mai getting shot mid-flip and falling into a pit of molten lava.

Redeeming Qualities?

None.

Heinousness?

Mai’s very active in the hunt for the Dragonballs, and will resort to cold murder to get what she wants, with children not being off-limits. The script makes a point to describe how everything she does, she does “sadistically”. Shou is just the generic muscle, nothing special about him compared to Mai.

Conclusion

Also a keeper

Hey guys I got a few more candidates from a movie I saw yesterday called The Forgotten Battle so lets talk about it.

What’s the Work?

The Forgotten Battle is a 2020 Dutch film set in WWII. It takes place on September 1944 where Germans were still occupying the Netherlands’s province called Zeeland following a dutch woman named Teuntje Visser who becomes involved in the Resistance, a British Pilot named William Sinclair whose plane got shot down, and a dutchman named Marinus van Staveren who fought for the Germans. Now among the people these people face this is the first of the worst, Oberst Berghof.

Who is He? What Has He Done?

Oberst Berghof is the German Commandant in charge of Zeeland who rules the Provence with complete oppression arresting any innocent civilians that dares to question or rebel against Berghof and having them executed, already killing countless even for the pettiest of slights, having already arrested and killed has three innocent boys arrested and executed to make a point on what happens if any disrespect Berghof.

One prominent example of this is when Teuntje’s brother Dirk throws a rock at one of Berghof’s convoys, before arresting Dirk and despite pleas from Dirk’s father and Marinus to give lenience to the boy, Berghof has his second-in-command, Pim den Oever, torture Dirk until Dirk is force to give out names of the resistance working against Berghof.

Berghof would then have these people arrested and sentenced to be executed with Dirk where Berghof forces Marius to be part of the firing squad in killing Dirk and his friends for the reasons of trying to convince Berghof to show mercy along with learning that Marius tried to secretly warn Dirk’s family about the execution, while sending Marius back to combat hoping that he’ll get killed there.

Battle of Walcheren Causeway Berghof blows up all but one bridge so that the allied forces led by Canada and England will only have one bridge to enter Walcheren island where Berghof has his forces massacre the entire force trying to enter Zeeland killing countless of soldiers while forces the very few who have survived to retreat.

Luckily Janna was able to give the Allies a way to pass through the checkpoint and enter Walcheren Island anyway before succumbing to her wounds as a result of being shot by Berghof’s men. Janna’s death will not be in vain as the Allied forces uses this passageway to enter the island and liberate Zeeland from the Germans forcing Berghof to retreat.

Frudian Excuse? Redeeming Qualities? Other Militating Factors?

All that’s known about Berghof was that he abuses his position as commandant of Zeeland to oppress the people their killing any whom Berghof dislikes on the pretense that’s its to maintain order when they are really done out of the pettiest of slights done to him. Yeah no justifiable excuse here

While the rock that Dirk throw at Berghof’s convoy did kill a few Nazi soldiers, Berghof isn’t concerned about these dead soldiers in the slightest and is only punishing Dirk because he tried to rebel against Berghof, where Berghof would have Dirk tortured for information before executing him once he outlived his usefulness. Also Berghof forces his own subordinate Marius to be part of the firing squad before sending him to combats in hopes that Marius will get killed as punishment for defying him, showing that Berghof has no care for his soldiers beyond what they can do for him

Berghof also has a Faux Affably Evil facade when talking to Dirk’s family and Marius but that’s just it a facade, which Teuntje sees right through and calls Berghof out of it, going as for as to say Berghof regards this whole thing as a game which Berghof just smirks at and shows smug indifference and even satisfaction upon hearing Dirk’d father’s cries of despair with the knowledge that his son will be executed.

Heinousness

As the closest thing to a Big Bad of the movie Berghof sets the heinous standard, having oppressed the people of Zeeland, torturing and executing innocent civilians for petty slights, maintain his tyrannical rule, or just to make a point and has his soldiers slaughter countless of Allied soldiers when they try to take Zeeland from him. I do plan to EP his second-in-command later but yeah Berghof does more than enough to standout.

Final Verdict

I’ll leave the verdict up for you guys.
