Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

The sandbox page looks good. However, Kaiser Ephes and Ende would be under the Crossover Games folder since they havent appeared in any of the OG games yet.

Ju-Ma would be under the crossover games folder too because while he has debuted in Original Generations timeline but he would be under the Crossover games folder because his OG incarnation has redeeming qualities that his J incarnation dosent.

I actually don't know I just saw you say that the other two were the only ones that weren't.

Which makes me wonder...if it's just adding that line, do we even NEED to give the film one its own entry? Or can we do like we did for Animal Farm?

Or is it a case like No Country or Coraline where the film's extremely well-known?

If the former, we could just do:

  • Lolita: Clare Quilty is an eccentric and wealthy man who serves as the dark shadow of the already depraved Humbert Humbert. While Humbert is a pedophile who seduces Dolores "Lolita" Haze, Quilty centers on Dolores and stalks her from place to place, seducing her into a twisted affair for his own purposes. Wealthy and bored, Quilty forces children to participate in child pornography films and has Dolores thrown out when she refuses to participate. In Stanley Kubrick's 1962 film, Quilty even offers to let Humbert witness a live execution to save his own life, one of his favorite pasttimes.

Also, here's potholed Poseidal:

  • Super Robot Wars 30: Emperor Oldna Poseidal is just as vile as he is in his home series. On top of his various canon crimes, Poseidal would be drawn to the chaos engulfing the Earth Sphere in his efforts to achieve immortality. Upon coming into conflict with both the Dreikreuz and the Rebellion, Poseidal would align with the Zanscare Empire, assisting with the Empire's various atrocities such as Operation Giant Roller and the creation of the Angel Halo in an effort to gain the secrets of Psycommu technology for himself. Seeking to overthrow the Quaestors and rule the universe as a God, Poseidal would also support the efforts of the Claw to activate the various Pillars around the Earth Sphere in order to open the portal to Subspace. When betrayed by Mian during the final showdown with Dreikreuz, Poseidal would boast that he has no more use for Mian, seeking instead to instead use Shakti as the vessel for the Bio-Relation system upon triumphing over the Dreikreuz.

EDIT: And a slight tweak (including de-potholing):

Got a minor DC villain to discuss.

Who Is He? What Does He Do?

Maaldor the Darklord is a supremely powerful and nigh-omnipotent being born in a parallel dimension who has, for his billions of years of existence, been driven by one thing: sheer boredom and a desire for a challenge. To accomplish this, Maaldor devoted much of his existence to wreaking chaos and subjugation across his universe, in his own words "enslaving uncountable trillions and slaying at least that same number". When he makes his debut in DC Comics Presents, he's finishing up razing the last planet that resisted him, slaughtering its soldiers and their leader, even after he surrenders. Finding himself still unsatisfied from conquering the universe, Maaldor seeks out powerful beings from other universes to challenge him, and transports Superman and Power Girl from their dimensions to battle him. (after vaporizing several of his soldiers simply for not leaving fast enough). Forcing the two Kryptonians to battle him in gladiatorial combat by threatening to wipe out all life in the universe, Maaldor proves too powerful even for them, until Superman tricks him into transferring his powers inwards to seek out his own essence. This proves too much for Maaldor to handle, and his physical form collapses and his life force ends up imploding, creating a dimension of pure insanity, with Superman and Power Girl sealing him away in it.

Now an incorporeal entity trapped within this dimension, Maaldor returns to torment Superman by invading his dreams, where he forces Superman to destroy everyone and everything he loves. He soon starts goading Superman into nearly killing his loved ones in real life and causing collateral damage. Superman ends up going to Madame Xanadu for help, along with two others who Maaldor has similarly afflicted, and they end up transported to Maaldor's dimension, where he attempts to drive them insane and merge them into his realm of insanity. He's ultimately stopped, and when he next shows up, his dimension is starting to collapse in on itself, threatening to destroy all life. Superman and the Phantom Stranger end up enlisting the Joker of all people, the one person insane enough to harness Maaldor's power, allowing Superman to effectively lobotomize Maaldor's consciousness, stabilizing the dimensional planes.

Maaldor makes his next major appearance in Tales of the Green Lantern Corps Annual (though with a vastly different design). Sensing the power source of the Guardians and the GL, Maaldor begins leeching power from the Master Battery, destroying the Capitol of Oa and taking three of the Guardians, using them to break down the dimensional barriers. Emerging from his prison, Maaldor immediately begins seeping energy from all Green Lanterns across the universe, draining their rings and causing many to plunge to their deaths, planning to unleash a new reign of terror in the universe with his newfound power. One of the Green Lanterns, Arkkis, ends up sacrificing himself by absorbing Maaldor's energy, seemingly destroying the wicked being.

Maaldor survives, however, merely returned to his own dimension. He makes his final, minor appearance during the Crisis on Infinite Earths, where he's part of the group sent back in time to stop Krona's experiment, only for Krona to kill him and his colleagues.

Mitigating factors?

No. Maaldor's noted to feel empty and shallow from his wanton destruction, but that's due to not finding it challenging enough. He might've been part of the group sent to stop Krona from creating the Anti-Monitor, but that's textbook Evil Versus Oblivion as the Anti-Monitor is a threat to him as well (even Darkseid was trying to stop the Anti-Monitor).

Heinous standard?

He's caused death and destruction on a universal scale, enslaved and massacred trillions, all to ease his own boredom. Admittedly, though, the incident involving the Joker probably shouldn't count, as he was explicitly losing control of his dimension, but he's still wracked up a considerable body-count for a minor villain.

Final Verdict?

Your call.

Why so serious?

[tup]Maaldor the Darklord

Would anyone mind if I reserve DC vs. Vampires and the The Flash (2014) crossover event which will be using Despero as the Big Bad. Some promising stuff seems to be in both.

Also happy birthday Overlord.

Emperor Poseydos and Maaldor are yes. Fun fact: despite apparently being a phenomenally powerful Cosmic Entity, his final appearance in Crisis sees him teaming up with… Icicle and Mirror Master. And then gets out-phenomenally-powerful’d by Krona, who blows him to smithereens as easily as the other two. [lol]

Are the 3 OG Robot Wars entries good?

  • Aguilla Setme is the cruel head of the School, a brainwashing academy for Child Soldiers. Setme is responsible for the brainwashing and Mind Rape of countless children into heartless soldiers, and she has no compunction sending them to die as cannon fodder, or to kill civilians. The process is portrayed as a painful and traumatic one as well, with Latooni, one of the "graduates" of the School who is saved having what amounts to PTSD and severe issues. When Arado, one of her "children" manages to escape her, Setme shows no remorse in brainwashing his Love Interest Seolla and sending her to murder him. When Seolla is saved, Setme has their beloved big sister figure Ouka brainwashed to kill them, Ouka only freeing herself long enough to destroy Setme at the cost of her own life. Setme even says they're not even people to her, just test subjects to be used and discarded.
  • The Ax-Crazy, sociopathic Archibald Grims, a Psycho for Hire without a cause, only wants and loves "needless bloodshed, especially from the innocents." He also gleefully forces Elzam to make a Sadistic Choice, whether it's to allow Grims to unleash a deadly nerve gas, killing the entire populace of a colony, or to kill his, Elzam's, own wife to prevent the attack.
  • Lubikka Hakkinen is a brutal, sadistic mercenary who leads attacks on civilian colonies all the while sporting a big Slasher Smile on his face. One of these attacks took the lives of the parents of Tytti Noorbuck, and this wasn't the first atrocity Lubikka had committed. When Tytti exposed him, Lubikka was forced to flee, becoming a mercenary raider who still carried out war crimes, except now he possesses a fixation on making Tytti suffer. He targets her friends and kills her lover Ricardo, all to hurt the one person who escaped him before he plans to kill her as well.

Setme's okay, and Lubikka MAY be, but Grims's is...brief.

[tup] Maaldor.

I don't know if this is a stupid question or not but on Darkseid's comic page, it says that he genuinely loved his wife Suli. Does that effect anything for his CM status?

Yes to Maaldor and Darkseid in present has thrown aside all good qualities though speaking of his entry and reference to casting aside redeeming factors we've got this:

"While he once loved someone, his mother, Heggra, wanting to make him evil killed Suli, helping turn Darkseid into the Galactic Conqueror we know him as (but not before he had Heggra poisoned)."

Um... did this sentence load up on a few beers before trying to go for a drive?

I'd actually retain the mention of him killing Heggra—New Gods treats it like not only one of his most noteworthy crimes but one of Desaad's as well—but yeah, that sentence really, really needs to be tweaked.
